the students were so cute and respectful, showing their genuine interest in the food and giving thoughtful opinions about it. and i loved how the girl near jessica kept eating she’s so cute hehe you can tell she really enjoys it ^-^
its actually expensive to eat at school canteens.. thats why some of the student here in the philippines always brings baon(lunch box) and some extra cash for meryenda(snack) and the most students eat during vacant classes was siomai rice so affordable and delicious.. just base on my experience tho.. thanks for using filipino food! hope you guys did enjoy eating with jessica :) love lots and god bless!

I love how they just eat it directly without smelling or judging the food by the way it looks. Hate it when people judge food without even tasting it because it smell or looks odd to their normal cuisine

True, although I personally think there's nothing wrong with smelling food. It's the judging that's bad.
Lumpia should be dipped on spicy vinegar. It's also better to have atsarang papaya (it's like our local version of kimchi but sweet and sour) beside the barbecue.
I was about to say the same thing. Lumpia and BBQ need spicy vinegar to tame the "saltiness".

Oh? Is atsarang papaya use the fruit? Because we in indonesia have kimchi alike using papaya's flower in sundanesse and sumatra dishes. It would be savory and spicy tough.
@@nfspbarrister5681 Yes, we use the unripe fruit. It's usually mild spicy compare to kimchi but it may be adjusted depending on one's preference. Your country's dish seems interesting. It's a must try.

I hope those kids know that their food review has now reached half a million views. It's wonderful to see kids being open to other culture and their willingness to learn.
The saltiness and the common use of vinegar is common to Luzon region, as someone from the southern part of the Philippines the mindanao region our foods base is mostly on the spicy and sweet/spicy and sour, in fact some of our families from Manila when visiting mindanao usually cooks salty/full of vinegar and the patis(fish paste?) Also experienced it when I went to train in Cavite, that's why during the training I only eat a little due to the saltiness.

@@banshee1133 lol, anong based on my own bubble ka jan, say that to me if what I said is literally false, but since that's my experience, and experience of other family and friends of mine, some are based in manila, your food mostly highlights the flavours of Patis, vinegar, and salt. Because if you go to mindanao especially in my city we seldom use Patis and vinegar. Since our dish is more flavourful and spicy due to some Muslim influences, and we're more closer to Indonesia and Malaysia so we were able to have some of their spices and foods that were adapted in ours.
@@banshee1133 Its true tho, Southerners usually prefer sweet & sour. I totally hate dishes that are too salty, and most of my relatives from Cavite cook the dishes too salty or add more vinegar. Idk what else they put but its not my style. We are different, and I like that we are varied.
my favorite foods in filipino canteen are monggo with malunggay and sinigang and adobo and of course with rice.. omg nakakagutom naman ito.. .
My favorite was pancit canton extra hot with rice. Rice is life! Only 17 pesos when I'm in High School.

I’m glad they got to try these dishes. Now I finally realize how true it is that some Korean and Filipino dishes can taste similar. All Koreans seem to compare our dishes with familiar ones to them. Lumpia and adobo are every American’s favorite and most commonly tried Filipino dishes. They love these and pansit.
I think filipino food is def not that commonly eaten in the US tho,. Like most Americans wouldn’t recognize the foods that you just listed. ..

Our canteen food was mostly “fried foods” bologna, hotdog, egg, chicken, longganisa, and free soup🤣

I'm lucky that in our University, we have tons of Canteens scattered inside of the campus. They served almost all the filipino dishes and even changing the type of food/dishes everyday.

I am a boxed lunch girl but when I get tired of the food I went to my high school canteen to buy at least the ulam. The best thing there was the pork giniling especially that I can get a boiled egg or quail egg with it ^^ and the sinigang. The food was quite cheap too around 25 Php (rice&ulam) that was 10 years ago though. When I entered university the food is already 35 php (rice&ulam)
So proud of our native dishes, this is why many Korean can survive to live in the Philippines 😊😊😊
You should try Lumpiang Shanghai some time. It's actually more of "ulam-able" type of Lumpia than Lumpiang Toge and Lumpiang Toge usually is paired to Lugaw or porridge and not rice. (atleast in my province)

Well when i was in grade school our canteen school usually sells pizza bread, goto, and mostly junkfoods. And when i was in highschool they sell different varieties of ulam like hotdogs, chicken etc. Bread aswell

In my whole school life.. I’ve never experience eating canteen food, I’ve always bring lunch box and eat it in our room or sometimes in canteen area but sometimes I’d just go back home and if I dont want to go home I just eat in karenderya instead..
My favorites were mostly vegies like munggo beans, baguio beans, ginisang sitaw, ampalaya, chapsuey, ginataang nangka, pakbet, at ginataang kalabasa with matching pansit but when it comes to sarsa-dish I like menudo and adobo the most

It's surprising to hear "In the Philippines ... we don't eat a lot of vegetables." Meat is often the most expensive ingredient, so where my parents grew up in the provinces (and I myself ate a lot growing up as a Fil-Am) mostly only ate vegetable-heavy dishes like pinakbet, balatong, tinola, dinoydoy, karekare, dinengdeng, ginisang ampalaya, different kinds of ginataang veggies, and lots of veggie--side dishes like adobong veggies. These all have meat, yes, but they had just as much (if not more) veggies in it as well. Not discounting the host's experiences, but just wanted to relay that for many Filipinos, just meat and rice were not the norm on our menus.

maybe she's also referring to the canteen food. canteen and carinderia food usually forgo vegetables to cut down on costs bc what's more important in the ulam is the meat paired with rice. and kids don't usually like vegetables so canteen dishes are usually adobo, bistek, menudo, fried food, etc.
This is what I grew up in as well here in north Luzon, dishes that often use garden variety vegetables--they are often rare if non-existent in the markets here in Laguna where I work.
Dont compare because as you said "in the province", but do note that I've lived in Manila, Laguna, and Batangas so I've experienced multiple sides of life and my heritage are bicolanos wherein despite most Bicol foods are meat based, they also eat veggies, but what she said is correct, most are meat based.
For example, all if not most the veggie foods you've mentioned have a meat base too. So she's not wrong that it's still a meat centric country. There are only a few that you can count purely made of veggies like atchara, lumpiang sariwa, tokwa.
You've even contradicted yourself already and admitted that every food you've mentioned is meat base. I mean seriously even chopsuey wouldn't be chopsuey without innards, that's what gives it it's bitter taste.

I think.., in general, you can expect 3 kinds of taste in every Philippine dish... sweet, salty and sour... at least that is what I have experienced most of the time when I was there.... 😋😋😋

To be honest I can't remember eating in our hs canteen except when where assigned to clean the table and get free meal of our choice 😂. Most of the time it would be banana barbeque and ice cold drinks and eat it in the school quadrangle our somewhere but not inside the canteen because it's too crowded. Btw, the students look so shy and it's so adorable to see them enjoy their meal.
Lets be real here guys. It is not their fault that they use Filipino review contents for views. We can see it in positive perspective and the negative side one. Their contents might actually clickbaiting and for views, but they promote our local foods and authentic culture than we could do. Lets understand the fact that it is satisfying because you feel that you are so proud of your country, despite of toxicity, negativities and bad side. No hates here but we just see how the way we understand thing. Well, it is all business, and we are just views. If their marketing strategy is that strong, it is up to you if you want to patronize it or not, knowing the consequences and the otherhand effects.
If we filipino students will be asked what we really actually eat during breaktime that would be SIOMAI RICE or the SILOG MEALS. The food showned in the video was usually TEACHER's MEAL not for typical HIGH SCHOOL or COLLEGE STUDENT.
Edited: I graduated HS not taking meals like that because its too expensive for me hahah.

So the "Skewers" are actually not called "skewers" they are called Barbecue. Yes it is weird as it's similar called to barbecue sauce. But that's what we call it...and its very common here in the Philippines 😄😁😅😂💓💓
I think it's time to correct certain words. Skewer is the wood, as in pork barbecue is put on a skewer.

ive always noticed how the korean palate is similar to those of the filipinos. cus in the ph we dont use a lot of herbs and spices? so our food isnt super exotic to foreigners and the tastes are easy to approach. aside from the fact that it might be saltier or sour to their liking. this might be the reason ph cuisine isnt that known too since it isnt that “unfamiliar”. i love these videos btw ❤️ keep it up jessica!

I really enjoyed watching this. It reminded me of the times I made my Korean and Chinese classmates to try and eat Filipino food when I was still in Uni. They too, loved lumpia the most and isaw with beer when we go drinking 🤭
