I coach a high school football team and have been using this tackling philosophy for a couple years. We're only a division 3 school but we're undefeated and we've shut opponents out in 6 of our last 10 games.
When I was in high school (late 90's) I basically learned the roll tackle all by myself, and I was very successful with it. But one of the "coaching points" of my coach was that you had to "hear" the hit, meaning you had to use your helmet and thus your head to generate the sound. I was told that what I was doing was taking the sissy way out and that I was arm tackling. I refused to do it and stuck to my technique and as a result was benched on defense. In an effort to get my job back I figured out what my tackling percentage was compared to my replacement and found that mine was 91% while his was only 72%. But my coach didn't care. He said he would rather hear it 71% of the time compared to 0% of the time. LOL.
Mike Paquin What a dick. We have used this and this makes tackling extremely easy, the rip tackle shit would hurt 10x more and not as reliable. It feels like the hawk tackles are effortlessly done, they go down so quick
Mike Paquin yeah, this way is always the way I imagined you would tackle, like using the arm except the roll at end but I guess that would happen naturally due to the momentum you had.
Sounds like he didnt care for your safety, better of doing it your own way cause he wont be there to feed you with a straw later in life doing it his way
Fuck you must not like that coach, props to you for learning the technique yourself. Guess he didn’t want to change with the times. Sounds like he was saying go out there get a concussion and spinal injury and I’ll be happy to put on the field
I think it is 'cause the league was trying to stablish a difference between sports, but with the sports constantly evolving, it was impossible not to assimilate your techniques.
No its because Pre-concussion/CTE awareness era coaches were always taught to never allow the ball to advance. The goal in American Football is to stop the opponent from advancing, not necessarily 'only' bringing him down. Head up, cheek to cheek, shoulders, and then arm wrap will usually always bring the opponent, but they might churn an extra 1 or 2 yards in the process. You'll be told to watch the hips and that no one can run without their legs, but when it comes down to it, both the rules of the game and the coaches agree that not an inch of territory is to be spared in American Football. And since the player is wearing a helmet and pads, tacklers are told to go into the tackle with full force when given the opportunity. Knock their bodies back, not wrestle them down by wrapping up. Also the designs of the game are different. American football individual plays are huge, and if you blast into a guy full force it increases the chances you may strip the ball from him or at least highly discourage the other team from advancing, than if you were to just only 'wrap' him up.
No. its not about not allowing the ball to advance and not give up one inch of ground in American Football. American football coaches, as the game grew away from it's early roots in rugby, the football coaches simply did not know much at all about rugby tackling, because they know very little about rugby, seeing as they did not study it. It really *is* that simple... Football uses helmet and shoulder pads.. The coaches determined the head in a helmet to be a useful "weapon" in the game... "Look at them and drive your head straight through your target.... Which led to many, many BRUTAL collisions. RB's from "the old days" of Pro Ball would be left a life-long limp, due to damage their bodies suffered from all of the blows taken... The League knew "nothing" about CTE.... The game knew all about concussions though.. We called it, "getting your bell rung." It happened often... but CTE... not so much. Even though the risk of CTE/ and concussions in football is now "minimal" (by comparison, and far less than even Girl's Soccer) it is just a GREAT idea to use these Rugby Techniques... They are by far more efficient. They allow tacklers and runners to participate in games with MUCH less *pain* which allows them to play faster & better with more confidence... It makes American Football an all around better, more exciting game to both play and to watch.
True I play football and I tackled somone wayy taller than me using this technique thnk you rugby for making football safer and easier when I didnt know this technique I would always get broken or trucked and then I learned this and it made it easier so thank you rugby I might play rugby myself for more types of techniques that I can use in football
1. Hawk Tackle: Coaching Points (7:57): Eyes to the thighs/Wrap and Squeeze/Drive for 5 (when necessary) Direction: hit the player in the thighs, wrap and squeeze. Drill 1: Defender gets on knees, ball carrier steps to either side, defender wraps up ball carrier at the thighs and drives through him. Drill 2: Ball carrier jogs to the middle cone where defender meets him, wraps up ball carrier at the thighs and drives through him. Drill 3: Coach holds dummy bag and rolls out, defender shuffles sideway, maintains nearest hip and attacks. Once he squeezes and wraps up dummy, coach lets it go allowing the defender to drive through the dummy bag. 2. Hawk Roll Tackle (same as hawk tackle except a role is included) Coaching Points (11:29): Eyes to the thighs/Wrap and Squeeze/Roll 3. Profile Tackle Coaching Points (14:58): 1. Attack the near pec, wrap and drive for 5 Drill 1: Ball carrier holds pad and meets defender at middle cone. Defender attacks pec and drives for 5. Drill 2: Defender shucks offensive lineman and tackles ball carrier by attacking the pec and driving for 5. The ball carrier provides initial resistance before allowing ball carrier to drive through them both falling on the pad. Drill 3: Defender strikes with shoulder, wraps up and drives solid dummy bag for 5 yards while the coach holds the solid dummy bag. 4. Strike Zone Coaching Points (20:35): The Strike Zone: Below the neck and above the knees. Use the shoulders at times in this area. Never aim at heads. This is for tackling a defenseless opponent and is meant to prevent targeting. Drill 1: A defender drops back, and the coach throws it to one side. The defender must quickly locate the strike zone by hitting a dummy in the appropriate area. 5. Tracking. Coaching Points (2:18): close the distance with ball carrier by tracking the near hip Drill 1: Run and Gather - the defender runs and gathers by breaking down as he moves with the ball carrier being sure to maintain attacking posture with shoulders square along the near hip of the ball carrier. The ball carrier jogs and mimics cutbacks while the defender goes full speed. The ball carrier is at 75%. 6. Compression Tackling Coaching Points: Everyone defender tackles together to finish the ball carrier. Front side defender must turn back the ball carrier. Back side defender must close the gap. Drill 1. Ball carriers line up next to 3 cones. The Coach throws the ball to one of them. Two defenders must close the gam and two hand touch the ball carrier. Only took 2 hours of my time. To bad I don't know how to upload my screen shots.
not a seahawks fan, but i love this video on the proper way to tackle , the saints should take notes on the way to tackle and it also cuts down on spinal injury.great teaching tool.
learning from the nfl ngl you had a pretty good coach. feels like most coaches will either teach what they learned or make up their own shit, this vid is a very good resource.
Jordan Cheek hell yea. only thing that sucks is that when you ask coach if as a team we could watch it, and implement it i practice he says no. So its hard to practice this tackling style and get your technique down. Id recommend using a pillow and your bed to get reps because if you try it against a person going high speed you will snap some shit up in your body. Good luck tho💯💯
the idea is to tackle at the thighs with your head behind the ball carrier then wrap the thighs and drive to the ground if you are unable to drive the ball carrier to the ground roll towards your head and bring the ball carrier down -- we teach drive for five steps then roll
i am a newzealand high school rugby coach great application missed one imporant factor head placement we call it cheek to cheek head to the rear tackled player upart from a front on tackle then to the side important for head and neck saftey
Ange Robinson thanks .... cheek to cheek. ill remember that but it is opposite to what we are being taught. by getting the helmet in front of body you 1) avoid an arm tackle and 2) they hopefully land on your helmet and at least wind themselves.
+GBHanny8 Basically Sir,Ma'am,miss or master, there are 2 targets I am going for, Ribs, Pref 2 lowest ribs (under the ball) and legs. Both same tech. If heads on Runners LFT cheek on impact squeeze and turn/twist RT. The twist with Opp momentum will have you land on top.Now there is also driving style. When in tack zone (say 5yrds) eyes should lock onto his core, shorten your stride gradually to chopping, within say 2 yards crouch suddenly (lower than 2 last ribs) and on the point of impact drive your shoulder upwards bout 45degrees into Those 2 ribs. This will transfer any sized players bravado and momentum to the rear,( scared, hurt, off balance and on their heels)punch arms str8 like superman(as opposed to butterfly swim stroke many use) and squeeze to keep control. This applys to all sides, Front on, Side on and Rear end :) Keep head up in tackle at all times (visual) it also straights up back instead of bent, also don't plant feet, keep them moving in tackle at all times:)
I find it amazing how this is new to Americans. I play American football for my university and every time an American joins our team they're always amazed by how we tackle. To me tackling with your shoulder is such a natural way to tackle someone - maybe because I did use to play rugby too
it’s because way back like 1950s they were told to watch the tackle and look where you tackle and so it’s never been changed until we discovered how to do it safely
Didn’t know how to tackle that good. I got trucked a few times. I had a game last week and used this techniques and worked great. Made about 10 tackles that game. Thank you for making this video for all of us who needed it.
Thank you Coach Pete Carroll and to the whole Seattle Seahawks team. Just a few mins ago I was trying to find a new creative strategy out on the grid iron of more ideas and ways how to tackle on defense and special teams of side on the field. I love y'all's strategy and smart ways in this example video on UA-cam. This video really reminds me of the time I was in High School playing football. My team on defense and special teams had the exact same way of how to tackle a defender. So I'm more used to this type of tackling but, I love how y'all added the "drive for five" to take down the defender. I'll use this video as my tools for the up coming days while I'm training. I hope you Coach Pete Carroll and the rest of the Seattle Seahawks team for the NFL Playoffs. GO HAWKS!!!!
Freaking amazing this is the best tackling drills and techniques I've seen on UA-cam by far it reminds me a lot of watching good wrestlers break down how they get there double or a single leg takedown but cutting the angle and getting to the hip but my favorite is eyes to the thighs and drive for 5 if needed that hawk tackle is a textbook perfect
It's absolutely awesome to see the Skreaming Seatown Seahawks Football Club use the tackling techniques of its earlier forms,(Rugby and Rugby league) these forms of tackling are the safest and most effective. Not only does it protect, and prevent head, neck and back injuries of the user, it has the stopping power of a .50 cal!! Not taking anything away from the Hawks, but the only hitch in some of the hits being used here in the striking zone part of clip, is that a few of them have their heads on the wrong side of tackle. (Their heads were in the zone of pumping legs) Meaning helmet or not they are still vulnerable to head trauma from runners knees. Downunder there is a term used in tackling fundamentals to help keep ones pretty head and face safe at the point of impact.. Cheek to Cheek, in other words face cheek to buttock cheek.:) As a junior in Late 80s I was a lil guy playing OFF/DEF with a Rugby/Rugby League background. Check it...Its a sight when a mini crushes a truck front on
Thank you fro these tips .. I get to the ball carrier on time but can't finish the tackle . I will be practicing these techniques at practice and i will get better at tackling thank you guys ... I will let you know how my high school days go when I go to college
I got practice later and this was very helpful cause I struggle with tackling and this really helped me out with tackling the right way and safe,I’m not Seahawks fan but this is amazing and I hope my team and the 49ers do better on defense
Best tackling video I seen I will be definitely using this video as a platform in instructing my boys on tackling....I can’t wait for football season!!!!
Thanks for a great video. I am surprised to see so many comments which show the player has not been been coached in tackling at all, or has been coached differently from this method. I can't imagine why these has not been the 'normal' tackling methods, considering pro football used to play in thin leather helmets they probably tried to avoid head contact. The only problem with some of the tackles demonstrated is they allowed the runner to get two unearned yards by falling forward.
Great video. Recently a player from my Houston area who was in college died from a neck injury while playing football in college. I will teach my son this technic and hope his school does also.
This is by far one of the best tackling techniques out there. I teach my middle school FB players this style. It greatly reduces the chances of a neck or head injury. It is simple to learn and highly effective.
thanks I can teach this technique to my DB's, .. it's better than hitting upper body & the db's been dragged & have better defense... if you have more techniques that I can coach my athletes I would appreciate it. thanks
One really important thing to coach is to overcome the natural 'flinch reflex' that has the tackler close his or her eyes as the contact approaches. This renders the tackler blind at the last moment and unable to react to any last moment movement of the ball carrier. Not only is the tackler unable to parry any last minute fend but can also end up with their head contacting hip bones rather than the correct 'cheek to cheek' technique. This is where the concussions happen (ask Leigh Halfpenny - he is v good at dropping his head at the last moment and hitting his head on knees, hips and all sorts as a result!) Boxers train to overcome the flinch reflex - so should rugby players. Aside from that the Seahawks stuff is great - take and adapt for your footballing code (e.g. no shoulder charges for both rugby codes!)
Finally an nfl team that has learned the proper defence techniques using both shoulders from the 2 rugby codes. Brilliant I can finally watch an nfl game without cringing in fear of seeing a broken neck in every helmet tackle
The fact that ALL of these clips are from the LOB shows how dominant this defense has been. Yes I know this a video was posted 6 years ago. But looks like Pete has to pull this video out after yesterday’s loss to the bills because the amount of missed tackles was insane
I'm a coach here in Missouri for kids tackle football and will try to teach this to my kids.. would love for someone like you to come and show my kids and my coaches how to do this style of tackling properly... thanks
Do you do the USA Football Certifications for your coaches?... All of this stuff and more is there in age appropriate step-by-step videos Check out USAfootball.com and follow the links.
I love the fact that my team is a leader in innovation from promoting helmet design companies to reinventing tackling that is smart AND effective. Don't hate - appreciate!!
This tackling technique should be tought for all levels of football, becuse the " rip tackle technique" that they tell coaches to teach their players does not completely take the head out of the tackle. This hawks tackle technique focuses on having the tackler staying low and keep the eyes on the hips and make contact with the shoulder pad putting the head to the outside of the hip, wrapping up then rolling to the ground. I'm teaching my son this hawks tackling technique and it has helped him become more confident in his tackling abilities and is more safer as tackling goes.# Please replace the rip technique with the hawks tackling technique!!!!!!!
It is... It's becoming the most popular tackling technique all over the country, at every level. Especially college & pro but more & more high schools and youth programs (like the one I run) are mandating these techniques be taught, and our coaches be certified to know, understand (through USA Football) and teach them. Of course, football is all about "this is how *we* do it," and many, many coaches are very strong willed, even stubborn individuals (LOL, this is *why* we coach - it takes a very strong will guy to wrangle control of a group of strong, fast & smart football players). So, it's a bit of a process getting it completely universal. The best of us though, quickly see that this is *the* way to go... for a lot of reasons.
My highschool does this same technique. Only difference is that our coach emphasizes that we keep our heads up as if you were still looking forward, never the top of your helmet being forward to where you look down.
Thanks, I used to tackle with my body straight up. But now I keep it low and tackle on the legs! Thanks for the video. and i dont know why but my team kept trying to hit helmet to helmet so I'll show them how to properly tackle like In this video. again Thanks
Trust me if you follow these steps you will make almost ever tackle and won't be scared of any ball carrier
Ronika Parham straight facts bruh
I'll try it

Tips for tackling:
1. ALWAYS TACKLE LOW ( tackling low can make your tackles way more affective going to the legs.
2. Drive into your tackle
the idea is to tackle at the thighs with your head behind the ball carrier then wrap the thighs and drive to the ground if you are unable to drive the ball carrier to the ground roll towards your head and bring the ball carrier down -- we teach drive for five steps then roll

Thank-you for teaching me all these ways to tackle and I used it and it improved my tackling skills
Not only does it protect, and prevent head, neck and back injuries of the user, it has the stopping power of a
.50 cal!! Check it...Its a sight when a mini crushes a truck front on
This is beautiful! God bless yall for coming up with this.
Thank you very much, really helped me, before that i was hitting with my head and i almost got a concussion.
Thank you fro these tips .. I get to the ball carrier on time but can't finish the tackle . I will be practicing these techniques at practice and i will get better at tackling thank you guys ... I will let you know how my high school days go when I go to college
By far the best tackling video I've ever seen in my life.
Nice form of tackling and this was an excellent way to teach people how tackle ,especially me .. Thank you for this video👏🏾
thank you for posting this! i had my first JV practice today and i did great with some of these techniques
Good shit
This is how your supposed to tackle
I got practice later and this was very helpful cause I struggle with tackling and this really helped me out with tackling the right way and safe,I’m not Seahawks fan but this is amazing and I hope my team and the 49ers do better on defense
I am a safety so this really helped me thanks kam for being my inspiration
My first year playing free safety. This really helped me.
We're doing this in high school football it improved our hitting and tackling thank you!
Best tackling video I seen I will be definitely using this video as a platform in instructing my boys on tackling....I can’t wait for football season!!!!
Thank you this is gonna help with my football
I am a player from the AYFS Rams and I thank you for teaching me how to do safe tackling
This is very helpful‼️ im going to start working on this during off season
Thank you for this I’ve been struggling in practice lately!
Thanks these techniques will really help out in this weeks game
Thanks for a great video. I am surprised to see so many comments which show the player has not been been coached in tackling at all, or has been coached differently from this method. I can't imagine why these has not been the 'normal' tackling methods, considering pro football used to play in thin leather helmets they probably tried to avoid head contact. The only problem with some of the tackles demonstrated is they allowed the runner to get two unearned yards by falling forward.
Great video. Recently a player from my Houston area who was in college died from a neck injury while playing football in college. I will teach my son this technic and hope his school does also.
Haruki seto, best coach ....love his style of coaching...
This is by far one of the best tackling techniques out there. I teach my middle school FB players this style. It greatly reduces the chances of a neck or head injury. It is simple to learn and highly effective.
How they been effective at using it so far?
@maskedman5657 they respond to it well. We won our first scrimmage game 62 - 12 last night.
@@0118bigdawg that's fantastic man. Y'all got footage?
thanks I can teach this technique to my DB's, .. it's better than hitting upper body & the db's been dragged & have better defense... if you have more techniques that I can coach my athletes I would appreciate it. thanks
San Martin Montes all the dbs on my team just smoke the knees. im the biggest db so i tend to avoid it, i feel as if its a cheap shot
Thank you for teaching us the tackles 😀
Great way to tackle thx for the info it’s my first year playing football and I was scared to hit until now. Keep up the good work! 👍
Same, I’m in 8th grade and we’re starting to hit tomorrow and I hope these tackling techniques work
Cooper Brown how’d it go
Cooper Brown yeah how'd it go?
Thedudeacrossthestreet the season is over next week. We’re 0-5. I got about 20 tackles this year at Free Safety
Finally an nfl team that has learned the proper defence techniques using both shoulders from the 2 rugby codes. Brilliant I can finally watch an nfl game without cringing in fear of seeing a broken neck in every helmet tackle
Had to look this up for football season and it really helped me
Coach told me to watch this here we are: high school
1st year peewee, any tips?
I love the way you tackle
I sure wish we were as good tacklers today as we were then.
Thanks, I'm ready to get some soul-crushing tackles in on gameday this Saturday.
Good. Now I can tackle kids in the hallway properly. Thanks coach!
The fact that ALL of these clips are from the LOB shows how dominant this defense has been. Yes I know this a video was posted 6 years ago. But looks like Pete has to pull this video out after yesterday’s loss to the bills because the amount of missed tackles was insane
Outstanding video.
I'm a coach here in Missouri for kids tackle football and will try to teach this to my kids.. would love for someone like you to come and show my kids and my coaches how to do this style of tackling properly... thanks
Do you do the USA Football Certifications for your coaches?... All of this stuff and more is there in age appropriate step-by-step videos Check out USAfootball.com and follow the links.
this is awesome learning this stuff i even sent it to my coach
I play strong safety and linebacker and this helped me a lot
This makes me proud to be a seahawks fan
This is very good I’m not the best at tackling this video is helping me a lot.
This deserves 100 million+ views.
This video was helpful I have a game tomorrow against a tough team I needed this
They could’ve kept this in-house… I appreciate the spreading of knowledge.
I am a new HS coach and this is very helpful.
good luck to you -- it all starts with fundamentals and conditioning tired players make mistakes and mistakes lead to touchdowns or injuries
I love the fact that my team is a leader in innovation from promoting helmet design companies to reinventing tackling that is smart AND effective. Don't hate - appreciate!!
Thank you for this upload.
I love this tackle
The best of us though, quickly see that this is *the* way to go... for a lot of reasons.
awesome cant wait to view with my grandson thank you
Thanks I’m a line backer this helps a lot
We used to watch this in highschool before every single season
No wonder why Seahawks never miss a tackle.
My highschool does this same technique. Only difference is that our coach emphasizes that we keep our heads up as if you were still looking forward, never the top of your helmet being forward to where you look down.
3 years later but you can put your head down when you know where your prey is exactly
Just watched this today for football practice and did these tackles at sv to they work really good
Very Nice Video. Good Job Coach.
Thanks I had 2 sacks and it really helped
Best tackling technique on youtube
Awesome video great way to tackle safely
Thanks, I used to tackle with my body straight up. But now I keep it low and tackle on the legs! Thanks for the video. and i dont know why but my team kept trying to hit helmet to helmet so I'll show them how to properly tackle like In this video. again Thanks
I'm going to play football a team and i can hit hard but this gave me way more knowledge about tackles.
Knowledge is power -- tackling is not a THUD. It is a SPLAT --- imagine a rock hitting a wall and a ball of dough hitting a wall
Where was this when I played. I was going for the shoulders every time. I was getting trucked on a regular.
"#29 will contact with his right shoulder, wrap his thighs, and roll." and talk some mad shit after too haha
Great video. Thanks!
Watched this the night b4 a big game and I made two ppl fumble. Thank you legion of boom
Thank you so much.
Stick with it you will learn more from failure than success
Thank you I play MLB and I needed help with my tackling form this helped any other tips I can use
Lol
This help a lot got a senior football game tomorrow for the all country high school team championship
My coach made all of us watch this video and im so glad he did
love it!!! im teaching my boys ASAP
I remember watching this right before my football game, and i did everything it said to do and i still got trucked
Honestly this is the way to tackle. Shoulder into stomach, hands/arms around the middle of the legs, and drive back.
