1. They were fighting for states rights.
Which was their right to own slaves
2. The average confederate soldier didn’t own slaves.
They aspired to or would have if they could afford them. You should see the letters they wrote complaining to General Lee that digging trenches was beneath them and demanded the slaves do it.
3. General Lee was against slavery.
No, he wanted God to sort it out and it was Gods plan to enslave them. Plus, the free labour allowed him to pay his debts and keep his estate. General Lee knew the folly of the confederacy, but he still led hundreds of thousands of Americans to their deaths. He’s no hero.
4. The South was going to end slavery on its own in good time.
slavery was the cornerstone of the confederacy and there is no proof of such plans.
5. It was charitable to enslave black people and they were happy. Setting them free and reconstruction led to their poverty today.
Slavery is so wonderful let’s blame the black people and the wicked North instead of Jim Crow laws.
6. It was about economics
It sure was! The farmers loved that free labour.
7. They were fighting to protect the constitution which allowed secession.
There is nothing written in the constitution which allows its own destruction. When the constitution was signed by all thirteen colonies, they became one indivisible nation. The United States.
8. Lincoln didn’t care about abolition and would have kept slavery to preserve the Union. It was just his excuse to justify the war.
Lincoln knew all too well and advocated abolition was the only way forward. Imagine if he had to enforce slavery on free states, re enslaving black people? Thats not unification and is some serious oppression. Ludicrous! In the land of the free everyone had to be free. It’s just that simple and he made it quite clear.

Lincoln believed white people are superior to blacks, that blacks should not be able to vote or hold office, and that blacks and whites could not co-exist.
He "freed slaves" without having any constitutionally granted authority to do so, and only slaves in states that did not recognize his authority as POTUS anyway.
PS- the 13th Amendment didn't end slavery either. It constitutionalized slavery; legalized a form of it via its punishment clause.

Honestly, I expected more wisdom in this video. You didn't present any arguments on why your stance on the LGBTQ+ movement is right and his position is wrong. His stance on homosexuality is not driven by what he is against but rather by what he is for. Alan (as a catholic) believes that sexual intercourse is something sacred that should be protected through the Holy Sacrament of Matrimony. This Holy Sacrament is instituted by God for the procreation of children. If a person believes that the only true fulfillment in life is following Christ and his commandments, he would want that for everyone. You may not believe that, but that's not the point; the point is that he is consistent in his views on homosexuality, and it is an act of love to oppose people who practice sodomy.
Honestly, I would have expected you to read through the comments as much has already been discussed. As one commentator mentioned “There’s no hate like Christian love”. True that. Cheers!

Yes, it’s called reading history books from peer reviewed accepted material. The history you are referring comes from where? People like Harrelson? Ask him for his references and his arguments fall apart and if he actually published his revisionist history his peers would tear him apart. I have neither defended nor referred to anyone. I am commenting about the fact that you think the Civil War was about slavery. It wasn't. It was about the government's greed and profit of its local agriculture. How crops were harvested was the responsibility of the farmer who took advantage of slavery laws to do so. Without those laws, the cost of harvest would increase exponentially. By the way, just move on. There are too many haters out there and you are focused on hating one guy, who has no significant impact on the world beyond his group. @StamperTamper

The irony of someone that is pro LGBTQ+ complaining discrimination isn't lost on me. They named their organization PRIDE, a deadly sin, and stole the rainbow flag which for all of history up till the LGB take over was recognized as a Christian symbol. The entire organization was set up specifically to mock Christians from name to corporate logo. It is actually crazy if you think about it considering that out of the 3 major religions Christianity is the most lenient towards homosexuality. They claim to being victims despite having privileged protections nobody else has. They are backed by corporate media, the federal government, every tech company and 90% of online communities. They have an entire month meanwhile Christians' are told that if they say Merry Christmas at work they could be fired because some non religious porn addict will get angry about it and it is easier to fire the employee than deal with the rainbow mafia attacking the brand
They are so privileged that a catholic in a niche online community not liking them is seen as a big enough problem to go as far to harass sponsors he has (which also backs my claim that they are privileged. Story time: a loud group of black girls sat next to me and my brother at the cinema. The man beside me turned and whispered “stupid fucking monkeys” to me. After the movie i went up to him and said “i support your right to say what you want but that doesn’t mean ill let it go unchallenged, we can agree those kids were being ill mannered but your comment was far more ill mannered” he then said he regrets not slapping those kids when he had the chance. This is an example of a racist and perhaps a white supremacist. We are all made in the image of God and we all have the capacity to do both good and evil. Harrelson is a Christian ( or at least claims to be). So naturally he is a hateful bigot (according to this video) because his opinions are consistent with his religion. The video description reveals the lie. " accept who we are, let us into your community with open arms and we go away." If you are going to go away, why accept you into the community? It proves that the goal isn't to become a part of the community, it is to force the community (all members of it) to conform to their beliefs and actively participate in their way of life.

I thought pipe smoking was only for adults, yet the criticisms set forth here in the comments primarily resort to name-calling like children in a schoolyard. I originally really liked the Pipe Cottage videos, but when they strayed to the topic of politics--starting with the statement that he moved from South Carolina to Kentucky for political reasons--he lost me. I understand how Southerners continue to deny the cause of the Civil War and couch it in terms of States' rights (I mean the States' rights they're talking about are being able to continue to keep and own slaves, but sure - not about slavery) because they have to continue to cling to the idea that their beliefs are good and denial is the ultimate form of rationalization. They want to continue to fly the Confederate flag as a symbol of "freedom against tyranny" (I think that's what one of the commenters here said), while ignoring the fact that the ultimate tyranny is owning another human being as property. Yet, they will also probably decry anyone who kneels, or refuses to salute, the stars and stripes of the American flag as unpatriotic, while the Confederate flag was flown by states that literally seceded from those United States in order to create an independent nation. Taking a knee is one thing, but secession is quite another!
It’s like having to finish their sentences for them. “My grandpappy fought for states rights” Like, the right to own other human beings. Even the average soldier had slaves or aspired to own some of their own one day. Owning slaves was also as status symbol. Thanks for your comment. Cheers!

If the Civil War was simply about slavery why were two slave states part of the Union? KY and DE were slave states after the Civil War until the Constitution was amended. Also, General Lee among others fighting for the South were against slavery so to say it was about slavery is overly simplistic and bad history.

I’m an atheist and I disagree with Alan’s religious views. I also disagree with some of his social views. I support the LGBTQ community, but to accuse him of being a white supremacist is a stretch. I have watched all of his content. Certainly slavery was a huge part of the civil war, but it was much more than that. Cancel culture solves nothing. It only divides us more and makes sensible dialogue impossible. I respect your views and am happy to discover another progressive pipe smoker.
