I like the concept of the Allspark a lot, as the life-giver and retainer of all knowledge, so usually I prefer when the Matrix is a symbol of power and holds the knowledge of just the Primes.

I like the Matrix being links to the part of the well of All Sparks where the Prime Sparks resides, while the Allspark links to the rest. So they technically go to the same place but have different uses as different objects due to leading to different parts with different properties.
imo, Allspark should be the afterlife, Vector Sigma should be the life-giver and the Matrix should be the symbol of leadership and knowledge.
Love the Transformers: Prime version best. The Matrix was the wisdom bestowed to the ones that are worthy while the All Spark was the life force of Primus. This means when they were reunited, they formed Cyperton's full Spark. The Matrix was the conduit for the followers of Primus.

Well there was the Allspark Almanac I/II which was kinda like that for TFA, but there's also bits on how all the multiverse and universal stream stuff works (or at least how they worked back when it was released).
Every other page would feature the phrase "this bot was offlined by the cosmically powered Starscream"
When it was called just the Creation Matrix my issue was always why wouldnt Prime just keep building Autobots and 'breed' out the Decepticon.

That whole scene still chokes me up. From the moment Hotrod takes the Matrix and and "The Touch" starts to play. Hearing Optimus anoint Rodimus as a prime. Even when Rodimus comes charging to the others, commands them to "Transform and roll out," and Kup recognizing what happened and so happily saying, "I knew you had potential kid!"

I always figured there was a strong connection between The Matrix and Unicron. Notice they look very sinilar.

Here it is worth to mention that Oracle was written back into lore in the Beast Wars. Where Optimus Primal has also shape of Primate and they even encounter mysterious supercomputer Oracle in Beats Machines (which through context was Vector Sigma). I think safest assumption would be that Oracle was actually one of Primes, working in background to restore Cybertron. Maybe the Prima? It is bit unclear...
A fun trip down memory lane for this G1 fan but it also shows how the concept of the Matrix has evolved for us who lost track when we grew out of the franchise. Great job!
The Matrix of Leadership is one of my favorite relics and artifacts in Transformers lore. My favorite and the best way that is has been portrayed is in the aligned continuity and in Transformers Prime is with the Matrix being used for gaining wisdom and the AllSpark being used for creating life!
Personally, I like the way the Aligned Continuity depicted them.
The Allspark being the source of new life, the Matrix (of Leadership) making a new Prime and being the collective wisdom of the past Primes, and Vector Sigma being the 'master computer' that holds the information for download [as seen in Transformers Prime].
I prefer the G1 version.

I prefer versions of the story where Optimus prime was handed the matrix by his predecessor, instead of the "Optimus is the first true prime since the original" stuff that Aligned and IDW committed to. I really hope Cyberverse sees the return of Rodimus succeeding Optimus as a matrix holder (preferably without Optimus coming back to usurp his authority this time).

A lot of people don't like Rodimus Prime, seeing that Optimus Prime had to die so that Hotrod could become Rodimus Prime.
Since The 1986 Movie Optimus Prime has been dying in almost every series, and sometimes more than once in some the series we've had.
Peter Cullen doesn't really like it when the writes do that. At least when it has no real meaning, but Pretty much when he dies Optimus will eventually come back to life and resume his roll as leader.
Optimus Prime is practically probably one of the best Autobot leaders out of all the ones they've had.
How I saw it was that each fo the primes before Optimus took the Matrix were primes in title, an could hold the matrix till he arrived, but only he had the qualities to truly be called a true prime. If you look at each of the previous primes before him they each had some quality/ies that they were lacking or made them almost as bad as those those fought an so unworthy of the matrix an prime title. Though I also always liked the idea that "Prime" had fallen to just being a rank or title within the Autobot ranks, till Optimus prime took the title an elevated the title back to something greater on the level of what the ancient primes were.
It is kinda like the sword Excalibur any knight could hold, and carry it, even use it if the need arose. Yet only those that were deemed worthy like Arthur could actually truly wield an use the blade to its fullest. Hell that could explain what happened with Ultra magnus when he tried to use the Matrix on the scrap planet, something about him made him unworthy of the matrix, and so the Matrix would not respond to him an did not impart any power to him like it would to hot rod or had to Optimus prime.
I like rodimus prime
When I heard that Rodimus succeeded in becoming the next Prime I knew that he had haters. It's the kind of thing that happens and that's the main reason why he is hated. I get it. if ur favourite ( or the best hero) character in the movie is killed to be replaced you will most likely hate him. I loves Optimus prime. He is the best but if I was someone who had known from the day Transformers first aired in the world, I would probably be really upset and not like Rodimus either. But when I was young transformers put me to sleep 🤣so........
Thing is , I like Rodimus and he has the potential to be a leader like Optimus prime. He just doubted too much which is why he probably failed and he was also young( maybe too young) as well. I love his character as Hot Rod too. The only thing is him being so doubtful in believing he could live up to Optimus legacy is all his human side and a lot of people can relate. That another thing. Optimus prime leadership is how we want it to be, Rodimus Prime's leadership is the realistic side of it.
Another thing I want to ask is why Hot Rod? I mean where did he come from? Why not Bumblebee? The most beloved character among all the Autobots. He is also more than qualified. I can't believe they passed him to go to Hot Rod. Plus I haven't seen Hit Rod that much to know if he is qualified enough. Still love him though.
Would be nice to get an update on this considering how important the Matrix and it's ultimate, if forgettable, creator where to the ending of Lost Light.
My favourite one is the matrix being a gateway to the cybertonian afterlife.
I always thought the matrix in Animated was just a fancy container for the allspark fragments gathered in the final episode
Has anyone else realized how in Revenge of the Fallen the Matrix's primary function it to be a battery of sorts for the Harvester? Kinda degrading when you think about it.

I like to think of the martix as the symbol of those chosen to lead the fight against Unicron, that also grants its user added strength and wisdom. When Prima carried it as art as the Star Saber it was probably nothing to special other then part of the sword but when it was time for Prima to pass he placed his essence into it so that his wisdom and power could pass onto the next leader.

The way I see it, there are three Cybertronian relics. The Allspark, the Matrix, and Vector Sigma. There are also three separate roles they play, the ability to grant life, a repository of knowledge, and a source of Primus’s power. The trouble is that they alternate their roles regularly.
I like to think that vector sigma is a source of knowledge and is able to write or rewrite minds of transformers

no, this is an Animation Error, i have the feeling they drawn two versions of how Magnus put the Matrix in his chest and forgot to erase one of them

it was always obvious in Animated that The Allspark was meant to be the same thing as The Matrix. Just look at it when it first shows up. It's essentially a giant box version of the Matrix. And then they basically create the Matrix out of the fragments of the Allspark in the finale.
Another excellent installment of this great series...except you neglected to explore the completely different and I think most interesting example of reinterpreted Matrix yet, that of the live action films. Hopefully, you can remedy this woeful oversight in another installment someday.
I personally have a view on the Matrix that somewhat fuses Beast Wars and the movies. The Allspark contains the entirety of Cybertronian knowledge and gives life, but accessing that knowledge and properly using its power (I.e. bringing to life Transformers that are more than mindless beasts) requires the Matrix.
What about the popular rumor from the original Generation One cartoon's second season episode. "Cosmic Rust", where the Matrix of Leadership was mentioned as a part of legend. It was rumored to have been taken to the planet Antilla with the Cybertronians who colonized it. I forget where I had read or heard that rumor, but it was supposedly in a draft of the episode's script. Then there was a screen shot of the episode "A Prime Problem" where Teletaan-1 scans both Optimus and his clone. In the scan, you can see some of the detail from the outer compartment which housed the Matrix.
Not quite. There's nothing in "A Prime Problem" - when that episode was written (circa December 1984), the Matrix hadn't yet become part of the movie's story (drafts for the film circa Spring 1985 were still using the "merged lifeforce" idea I talk about in the video). But, it HAD been added to the movie script by the time "Cosmic Rust" was written (circa August 1985), which led to it being mentioned in a deleted scene from the episode, in an evident attempt by the production staff to slip in a reference to it ahead of the release of the film so it wouldn't seem to *quite* appear out of nowhere. It's not *on* Antilla, though - Megatron translates from the "Ancient Autobot" text written on the obelisk at the start of the episode that the legion who founded the planet arrived there "the first millennium after the creation of the Autobot Matrix." Starscream notes that that would make it 4-and-a-half-million years ago, which obviously doesn't match at all with what they'd go on to actually do with the Matrix in season three. I tried to slip a note about this scene into the video, but it wasn't fitting in neatly in a way I liked, so I just dropped it.
This is all rather fascinating to learn. It all just adds layers of depth, whether it was there or not, to the overall fiction of the original series
Does the Matrix look like a miniature Unicron to anyone else? Is it just me? And then the movie Matrix looks like the movie version of Unicron. What little we see of him anyway..

Unless I missed something, in Japan the last time we see the Real Matrix of Leadership (from the movie) is in Headmasters when Rodimus Prime departed to find a new home.
In terms of animation, yup, that's right. Within the larger Japanese continuity, though, Optimus has it back at the start of Generation 2 and it appears a little in that, and in some of the online manga and other fictions of the last ten years of so. But very sparingly! Japan never put as much emphasis on the Matrix as Western media did.
Not last production-wise but last chronologically (which is dubious considering Beast Wars).

I'm surprised you didn't mention that the matrix was the only thing that could cure the hate plague. Otherwise another great episode!
This was one where I didn't want to get into a blow-by-blow list of the fictional events surrounding the Matrix, and just preferred to talk about the general lore and history of its development. Destroying the Hate Plague is just one of a long list of things the Matrix has been able to do (separate from its overt purpose) that I didn't want to get bogged down in listing off.
What was that clip around 6:17 that showed Optimus and Rodimus both with a Matrix? Where's that from? I'd like to know more, I suppose there could be more than 1 matrix
That's from the 2003 Japanese-exclusive "Transformers" PS2 video game (sometimes mistakenly called "Transformers Tatakai"). There are two Matrices because of time-travel - Rodimus Prime travels back in time to when Optimus was still alive.

The Primacron scene did add some confusion, especially for people who think logically. In those days there was no internet, and children didn’t think that far ahead. But when fans got older and smarter, these continuity errors started popping up. Never the less, Transformers is awesome.

I always liked the idea of the Matrix being a repository of wisdom of autobot leaders. After Optimus released all its wisdom to defeat the hate plague and Hotrod laments the loss of the wisdom of the ages Optimus points out, "I think we are all a little wiser now. It is up to all of us to fill it up again." From that I thought now all autobots would become one with the Matrix and it had become the "Allspark" afterlife talked about in Beast Wars.

Prime sounds a bit too special of a rank to my ear, and I don't think of Primal as a rank, since the only 2 to use it are Optimus Primal and Primal Prime. Personally, I tend to use it as a main way to refer to the Optimus Primal.

Primus is the creator of Transformers in a lot of continuities.
What if The Matrix movie is just a microcosm of the Matrix allspark in The Transformers?
Now here's an interesting nugget to chew on that I hadn't thought of until now: is the Matrix, the dimension, not the object, AKA the Transformers afterlife, the same place across all continuities? Just like Unicron, Primus, and supposedly the first 13 Primes, unless that's been retconned since I last checked. Because the Matrix is a part of Primus, right? And if Primus is one being existing in all universes at once, then it might mean the Matrix may as well. So say that G1 Optimus Prime died and joined the Matrix. And so did Armada Prime. Then say in the G1 universe, the Autobots fixed or built a new body and went about trying to fish Optimus Prime's spark out of the Matrix and return him to life similar to how Rhinox did in Beast Wars. Could they accidentally hook Armada Optimus Prime instead and then it would be Armada Prime's spark and personality in G1 Prime's body? I think something like that could make for an interesting, non-canon, one-shot comic or mini-series.
Primus's nature as a singularity HAS been retconned out, but yeah, I always did think that there was probably one "communal" afterlife. As a dimension of its own outside physical space, I never saw a reason that sparks from all sorts of different worlds couldn't all go there.
There's so much uncertainty surrounding Optimus Primal' s origin. ( Beast Wars Optimus) On the TV series, we see him assisting with the creation of protoform x. And we know he has a history involving Depth Charge. can you do a video on Optimus Primal?

I like the video but you got one thing confused. At the end of the transformers prime series, it was the matrix that was absorbed into the all-spark, not the other way around like you said.
It was the AllSpark that needed a container, and it went into the Matrix. The Matrix quite literally took the AllSpark into itself.

Well, Hugo Weaving (Smith's actor) did play Megatron in the Bayformers movies.
Notice in the Beast Wars “Optimal Situation” Rhinox refers to two separate entities as the matrix:
“His spark is already joining the Matrix.” - The dimensional realm.
“His spark has the Matrix with it.” - The leadership object Autobot leaders carry in their chest.
I will honestly say, I never watched this until now lol So my theory on the matrix of leadership was kinda on par. I did use the comics as a help sources. The Matrix did had the sparks of the old 12 primes.. Orion Pax is the 13th, so he had his own Evo. My question was.. If the Matrix gave power to Pax and Hotrod... Why did it not give that power to Ultra Magnus or Galvatron? You would think it would as Magnus was a diaclone of Pax, Galavatron being the reformat of Megatron.. Megatron being a kin to the Fallen. That is where my theories went out the window lol
I've never been a fan of the matrix. I feel like it detracts from Prime's character, in a way. It takes him from being a regular guy who's just a tough badass, like in the first two seasons of g1, to a 'chosen one' with the power of a magic gizmo. To make it worse, Megatron is Prime's equal _with_ the matrix. Megatron is actually relying on his strength and skill alone.
I see the Matrix as Excalibur representing the one True King of Cybertronians. To me the Primes are a Jesus/Buddah figure. Avatar last airbender if we are going more modern.

I’m curious, has there ever been a Transformers version of the Underworld/Hell?
"The Pit" (also called "The Inferno") is the "Hell" analogue in the TF belief system, but unlike the "Heaven" analogue of the Matrix/Allspark/Well of All Sparks/etc, The Pit has never been shown to actually exist.
I like the transformers prime one... What I don't get about TFP is... The decepticons out number the autobots hundred to one and they have a warship and some the autobots won the war P_P
Vehicons are literally cannon foughter. Just not believable when each of the auto bots can solo 20-30 decepticon troopers. Why is all the good guy death scenes all about arcee's partners? She is bad luck. Also, I would really like to see combiners... Combiners as in a team of five or six bots combine to become a bigger bot and not like Soundwave's laser Beak

I think the matrix is a stand in for the eye of agamotto which is why at the end of cartoon movie it ends up around hot rod's neck

It's been almost 20 years since I saw the movie for the first time and I never realized that (at 1:30), Optimus takes the Matrix from his chest, leaving another non-glowing copy of the Matrix behind. I can never unsee this, I guess…

Regeneration one aka marvel comics/IDW had the cartoon matrix brought through a tear in space time into to comic universe to absorb the creation matrix (super matrix) wisdom of Primus and power of the allspark . I would love to see the continue that story. Magnus crushes Galvatrons head and I’m pretty sure Megatron downloaded into Starscream aka headmaster ( Titian’s returns Galvatron) murging the OG comic and cartoon univers would be epic not to mention the original Optimus body could be resurrected... the possibility’s are endless
For some reason, Megatron had A matrix of leader ship at the end of the four parter the end of the universe.
The Transformers Ultimalte Guide has a better explanation of what the matrix is, and why not even the bearer of the Matrix knows it´s full power and functions. Also, the The Matrix is not the essece of Primus but a fragment of the All Spark, wich is Primus´s essence, you can say it´s the spark of Primus, where all Transformers sparks came from.
I prefer the aligned continuity (IDW comics, TF: Prime, and War and Fall of Cybertron games) the most and as such I view the matrix I bit differently from G1, not to say this video is wrong it by no means is, however I always thought the matrix was a portion of primus spark given to the primes after his death. it was passed down through the ages as a symbol of power, wisdom, and leadership and grants the barrier increased strength and knowledge. this is why orian pax is weak against the powerful Megatron yet Optimus Prime (with the matrix) can equal the Tyrannical leader in strength. Just my thoughts though it dosnt make anyhting less true
Given the date of this video's publication, the additional lore surrounding the IDW iteration of the Matrix introduced in Lost Light is obviously not included. So, for anybody interested (and beware of spoilers ahead):
Rung, the Lost Light's resident psychiatrist, is revealed to be an amnesiac Primus. His alt-mode is revealed to be the source of the Matrix (and he can make more than one, though this takes a big toll on him). Meanwhile, in the Functionist universe, his regular mode is revealed to be the source of the crystals used in 'cold construction' -- a method for generating sparks that utilizes the Matrix. So the Matrix in this continuity can generate actual sparks, but only with complimentary components from both of Primus' modes. And since the Matrix and the crystals ultimately come from Primus, it calls into question if there's really any difference between 'forged' and 'cold constructed' sparks.
