  • This is a fairly long video (45 min) of the route from St Jean to Roncesvalles via the Napoleon Route. I left it at full length to show the entire route rather than excerpt sections as I did on the other Camino videos. Just skip through to see what's in store for you on the first day of your Camino Frances. Thanks to Dave Bugg for walking the route and to the weather gods for providing beautiful skies. This replaces a previous video with some additions as well as a correction or two pointed out by viewers. Thanks to all.

    Wow! I did this back in 2010! Going over the Pyrenees to Roncesvalles took me 9 hours and 15 minutes. Ascending at first was difficult with a backpack and I literally had to stop every 20 steps. When I got to the top, I remember saying, that this was what I came for; it was so peaceful, isolated, and beautiful. The descent was hard as well. You had to keep your knees bent. The walking stick helped so much during the camino. I highly recommend a walking stick. There was a stream at the bottom before I entered Roncesvalles and I had to take off my shoes and put my feet in the cool water. You really have to take care of your feet. I learned to do preventative measures to ensure that I didn't get blisters. I lost 3 toe nails doing the camino Frances; they grew back. The camino is something I recommend everyone do once in their life. I wanted to do the camino Finisterre this year but covid-19 happened. I will also do the camino from Puy le Velay in France and continue along the camino Norte in the future. It's an inexpensive way to travel, it's physical, emotional, and spiritual, and you lose weight as well. I created a camino family and still keep in touch with them to this day. The camino is social but also reflective. I spent a lot of time on my own, with myself. You learn a lot about yourself. Be open to what the camino gives you. It was quite an accomplishment to finish in Santiago but I was upset when I arrived. It's all about the journey and not the destination. Buen camino everyone! One step at a time. Always move forward.

      Thank you for your account. I will be on the Camino in two weeks. The 9 hr 15 mins you say was with how many stops and rests? Was the route well marked? Any thing you would caution me about? I am getting a bit jittery as the time nears.

      @@joefernandes1359 I did stop to rest of course. Your endurance and stamina will improve as you go. One foot in front of the other. Make sure you have a walking stick: helped a lot. You can get one there. The route is well-marked with the arrows. The Camino Frances is very organized and easy to follow. Ascending the Pyrenees the first day, I had to make sure when to turn. Then there was another instance where I walked in the wrong direction for about an hour and didn't notice any arrows so turned back. Other than that all was good. Trust in yourself, and trust the camino. Other pilgrims will help. In St Jean Pied de Port get a map with the topography and the passport. The albergues are easy to find. If you're not sure where to go when you reach a place always walk towards the church, the albergue is usually close by. You'll be fine. It's a great experience. Buen Camino! Oh, I didn't rely on any guidebook. If you want one, get the Camino de Santiago by John Brierley. I remember being a bit jittery at first too, understandable. Listen to your soul and take heed of your feet. I did preventive measures and learned how to bandage up my toes, etc. to prevent blisters, etc. Learn how to pack your backpack. It's an art. Some days will be easier than others. Always have water, chocolate, nuts, and a banana to consume en route. Lighten the load when you can. First thing leaving each morning is to find a place to have coffee and something to eat. A banana will give you a lot of energy as well. As well, most albergues are good and well-equipped, some better for doing laundry than others, some might have a better equipped kitchen (or not), some you might feel you might skip a shower. Enjoy the social aspect as much as you can. We never walk alone.

      My pleasure to provide it. That's what it was truly intended to do (including the nap). That way you can see pretty much what each stage on this and other Caminos entails and picture what it would look like in your kind of weather. If you really want to take a nap during the video take a look at the VDLP Camino. Lots of remoteness followed by more remoteness, but a really lovely walk if you dislike crowds. Buen Camino.

      What your video of the first stage really brought home to me was that if you don't prepare for the Camino you may be taking on a world of pain. As a 62yo who hasn't done any real walking since his 20's, I'm now aware in no uncertain terms since viewing your excellent video that I have to prepare, and prepare well, before I embark on the Camino next April.
      I want to be able to walk at least 20k a day (I'm currently at 11k) and when I get to the 20k+ level I hope to then start walking with an 8kg backpack. I'm also aware that even with proper training there will still be days of difficulty, but I'm hoping that by preparing my Camino properly it will be an enjoyable experience.
      People such as yourself who unselfishly donate so much time and effort into helping others deserve great credit, so again a big thank you. It is much appreciated. Buen Camino.

My biggest fear is losing my track along the route. I have a few questions and I will be very glad if you respond. Was the route well marked all along? How long did it take you? What was your age and fitness level when you walked? Any advise you would like to give a 70 year old with average fitness? Thank you.

    • @johnsikora
      @johnsikora  11 місяців тому

      The Frances is very well marked. There are also multiple apps that have the GPS tracks embedded in them so that you won't get lost. I was 65 when I walked the Frances and in OK fitness. I'm now 74 and just walked the Ingles, Sanabres, and Muxia/Finisterre this year (two months ago). I don't know if you book ahead or not but my advice is that if the elevation is high or the distance long book ahead so that you get there when you get there. And don't listen to anyone who says a given stage should be x K. It should be as long as it is comfortable for you. I personally have reached the point where a 20K walk is plenty for any day and 15K is even better so that I can enjoy the day, the evening meal, and the town that I'm getting to. I walked the Frances in about 60 days.

      That's hard to say. I get tired on short very steep inclines. Others get tired on the long slow inclines. I think you can be safe in saying that the last bit before you turn down into Roncesvalles is tough just because you've been walking all day. That, and the fact that this is the first day of walking. As you progress you get in better shape, and hills that would have been a problem become just another walk.

    • @johnsikora
      @johnsikora  3 роки тому +1

      If you mean how long is the battery life, it's only about 20-40 minutes so I hook the GoPro onto a larger (and heavier battery) that lasts all day (8+ hours). Each chip holds about 4 hours of 4K videos so I may need 2 or maybe 3 chips as well. That results in a ton of footage. The CF (which was not shot in HD) was about 2 terrabytes of data. The VDLP and CP were about 4TB each. You end up with about 50 to 60 GB of data per day of walking. Thanks for watching. I'm in the process of rediting the VDLP and CP videos now (since I can't walk any Caminos for awhile). Subscribe to the channel if you want notifications.

I contacted Dave and he said that he thought about walking there but noticed that there were a ton of people and tour buses and that just didn't work for him. Apparently, you can get there by driving so it tends to be a bit crowded. After walking any part of the Camino alone for any period of time, for some reason you get an aversion to crowds (if only for a short period of time). Thanks for the comment.

    How long does it take to walk from St. Jean Pied de Port to Roncesvalles? At what pace? I know the distance but because of the uphill, how long does it take?

    • @johnsikora
      @johnsikora  3 роки тому +2

      This particular walk was about 9 and 1/4 hours to go the say 24 K. So that puts the speed at about 2.6 K per hour. That, of course, is averaged over rests and other stops. But that should give you an idea. Normally, I plan on no more than about 2.5K an hour unless it is really flat adding rests on top of that. I'd allow 10 hours for the walk to play it safe. You know you could also walk one day from St Jean to Orisson and then either stay there or taxi back to St Jean and the walk the remainder of the distance by taxiing by to Orisson and then walking the remainder to Roncesvalles. No harm in doing that at all.

      Just run the video playback at .5 to get 2.5x or at .25 to get 1.25x. UA-cam should have a .2x which would be normal speed. If you really want 1x you can download the video and then play it back at .2 speed. You can control that through the settings option. The big problem with a 1x 4K video is that it's about 50-100 Gig of playback per day (and of course it would be about 4-6 hours long :) ) The slower playback is a little jerky but not too bad. Glad you enjoyed it. Hopefully, next year, I'll put up the walk to Finisterre, the Camino Ingles, and the last half of the Via de la Plata (assuming that Spain reopens).

      @@johnsikora Ah interesting. I was imagining the original files you had were normal speed and you sped them up for youtube, but it sounds like the originals were already at that speed, in which case there's not a lot of point in doing another version!

    how did you record the video

    • @johnsikora
      @johnsikora  5 років тому +1

      The video was recorded at 4K resolution using a GoPro strapped onto the shoulder strap of a pack.
      The video files are then stabilized and sped up editing out the bits and pieces showing hands, feet, or other distractions.

      @@johnsikora I really thought you did a fabulous job of matching maps with the "X" showing where you were on the trail. I hope to do this stage beginning of April and I had some concerns about if I could do it which were allayed by this video. I feel very grateful to you for this. I hope I get as nice weather as you had... gorgeous!

      Not true, you can use music and accept the terms unless you want to try and earn money
