How to fix a KTM 1290 LC8 gearbox. Part 1.

  • There's a KTM on the bench and it's not happy, it won't go into gear correctly so it's up to Dave to fix it.
    In part 1 Dave strips the engine out of the bike and delves into the engine to find the problem.

    Normally, if this happened to any bike of mine, I would have it fixed and then just sell it.... never to buy that brand again.
    But to be honest, the bike is so much fun and more insane than anything I've ever owned. I can't bear to part with it.
    The electronics are shit. The gearbox design is shit. The finish on the tank is shit. Etc etc.
    But despite it being very expensive to fix (far more reasonable thanks to Dave... cheers dude 👍) I have no intention of getting rid of it. I love it.
    I spoke to the head tech at a main dealers and he'd never heard of it happening before. So it's a rare occurrence. I was just extremely unlucky. And I ride like a dickhead.
    It's now back on the road and is just as much fun as before.
    Big thanks to Dave who did a mega job and even welded and painted the sump guard. Cleaned it all too.
    P.S: KTM Superduke 1290r for sale. Just had full engine rebuild........ 🤦‍♂️😂😂😂😂

    The same thing happened to my 2003 SV650 back in 2007, managed to get a 2nd hand gear box internals for £35 from a mate in Scotland from his old blown-up engine. when I put the engine back together I had the selector miss placed and only had 4 gears, so had to strip the whole bloody thing down again and rebuild it.. but it's still going so the guy says who I sold the bike on to 2 years later :) .

    So, in your opinion Dave, what would have led to the circlip breaking in the first place ?. Would the quickshifter have helped it on its way ?. Sooner you than me doing that job , excellent video too.

    • @obsession_engineering
      @obsession_engineering  3 роки тому +1

      The owner is quite enthusiastic and the shifter kill times were set quite short so they both may have played a part. Some manufacturers fit washers to spread the load more evenly over the circlip, that may have helped too, if it was used!

    I have a 1290R 2019 model. The quickshifter I am only having issues with. The shifts sometimes FEEL like it. Like when I wanna shift up, it doesn't wanna shift at all. Like it's jammed that can happen going to 4th to 5th. When I use clutch & shift normally works perfect feels smooth & nice. Just like it should, It's like the quickshifter isn't working properly. What can cause this?
    Thanks!

      pretty much all V-twin engines have a vertical split, probably one of the reason why most manufacturers are leaning towards parallel twins nowadays. KTM could have desigend the bike with a cassette transmission though, which would have made this job take 1/10th as long.

    • @obsession_engineering
      @obsession_engineering  3 роки тому +1

      It does partly make sense to split the cases vertically as the stresses from the crank/pistons, etc are easier to deal with so the cases can be lighter. If you split horizontally the case bolts have to take a lot more load so need to be bigger and stronger. Just means they're a bit more work to maintain.... Honda split horizontally on their twins, as do Ducati on the newer bikes

    @Obsession Engineering the only report that the bike was hard to get into fifth and sixth gear ? This bike has a quick shifter ? And the same issue is gearing with clutch or only in quickshifter? I have a little bit hard to get into 5th gear in quickshifter when full gas (not low rpm only full open gas) but when ı try to get into 5th gear with clutch there are no problem... so my gearbox is broken too ? my bike 1290 Superduke gen 2 on 15000 km

    Those KTM engines are rubbish. It’s always, always a $2 part that causes $1K damage. Happened to me & happened to this chap. I now know why their colour is always orange... because it hides the rust well.. The only thing I don’t understand is why it’s not covered under warranty? But, if I know KTM well & I do, they’ll say it’s his fault because he didn’t get it serviced at an authorised dealership.🤦‍♂️ Thank goodness for Dave & his famous apple crumble ✅👌
