      @Nirotix 5 років тому +88

      Black is the highest ball. Reds are worth 1, always have to sink a red before you get to go for anything else. He PURPOSELY went for the pink ball which is only worth 6 points when he could of easily cleared the table hitting only Red and Black ball for what's called a "Maximum Break". It's the highest amount of points you can achieve in snooker.
      Tournament sponsors will often of not always set an amount for a maximum break, like icing on a cake. They gain revenue through people watching these elite players play. He felt the amount was not worthy of his skills, so he purposely choses not to do a maximum break at thier tournament.

      He it is true - he did purposely take the pink and "settle" for 146 - BUT - at 6:05 you will see the pink ball is a sure shot. The black is not. The real reason he took the pink was to avoid the possible embarrassment of going for the 10,000 £ and missing. If he tries and misses then he did not get the 147 (and money) because he failed. But if he takes the sure pink and ends with 146 then he did not get the 147 (and the money) because "he didn't care" and he is "Snooker God" (which he is anyway). Going pink was a win win for him and his reputation. If the black was a more definite shot he would have gone for it.

    • @kenlaird229
      @kenlaird229 6 років тому +1255

      147 is the maximum score, achievable only by alternating between the black ball (7 points) and each red ball, although it is possible to pocket other colors between red balls for 2-6 points. The black ball is pulled back out to its starting position each time, until all the red balls have been pocketed, at which point the other colors must be pocketed in descending point order. The catch is what Sullivan does at 6:03, where he clearly has a shot on the black ball, but chooses not to sink it, and instead sinks the pink ball (6 points,) and plays an otherwise flawless game, giving him a final score of 146.
      He does this because he feels the prize money for a perfect run is too low, at what I believe the commentator says is 10K pounds for a perfect break, plus another 2K for highest break across the tournament? Either because Sullivan feels the prize money is too low, or, as the title says, "Because only he can," he makes an active decision to deliberately score one point less than the maximum, cocky bastard that he is.

    For those who don’t understand. The max score for snooker is 147, and to achieve that you must first sink all 15 red balls with each red followed immediately by the black ball.
    When you sink a red ball you can nominate the black or colored balls to sink next to maximize your points.
    The point system is as follows Black (7), Pink (6), Blue (5), Brown (4), Green (3), Yellow (2).
    The black and colored balls reset every time they are sunk. So it’s possible to go from Red to Black 15 times in a row to give you 120 points. Then after all the reds are gone you sink the colors in ascending order of points ending with the black ball giving you 147.
    With every red ball sunk you need to put the que ball in a position to sink the black for maximum points as the black yields 7. This will give you a perfect score.
    At the 6:00 minute mark he purposely puts the que ball in a position to sink the pink instead of the black. Meaning his max score can only be 146 because he purposely chose the 6 point pink over 7 point black.

    It's not arrogance, as already stated, it's making a point. I know snooker doesn't have the sponsorships it used to, but hitting a maxi is incredibly hard, it's more than just "potting the balls" its planning your shot, you're always shots ahead in your mind. It's an incredible talent to see someone do it and imo £10k doesn't do it justice. Well done, Ronnie!

    • @zarifshoeb
      @zarifshoeb 5 місяців тому

      The problem was too many people kept doing it. That’s why they lowered the price but even then, 10k is way too low for a perfect score.

      ...and that's what makes him also known as a very selfish player at the same time, that's also why he'll never be known as the peoples champ unlike Alex & Jimmy, those 2 would never have screwed the crowd that way or walk out on a match like against Hendry, they play for the crowd whereas Ronnie plays for himself.
      Great player no doubt but attitude stinks, he could have put 100 homeless people up for the night in hotel rooms with a hot meal with that wasted money,...that's the selfish side of him.

      david bryan Ai has a very particular reason why it will win. Ai learns; if Ronnie plays a few games with it, it will start to play like Ronnie and then later, it will have a beyond skill level. Since it is Ai, it scans many things most snooker players can’t scan and that is where to hit the ball at a very complex state, it will know how many times it has to hit edges better than anyone else, where, etc. An Ai can do anything, you could find a snooker game on say the App Store that has Ai and it could be programmed to play like Ronnie. So, in conclusion if it keeps learning, it will always win later on.

Since working with Steve peters and Ray reardon he has learned discipline, he doesn't let anything upset him these days and just takes the game as a game and not so serious, even his safety play has improved and is better than most players in the current ranking. The clue of how good is he is reflected after the poke, re watch and look at where the white ball stop. The white ball is ready for the next poke - he target and prepared it for black of course. The placing is so good that the opportunity never stop. At 6:03 he made his point, he intentionally skew the white ball not to follow and ready for black but slice to the right and got pink, thus -1 from reaching maximum point, as saying "your prize money ? Nahh too small". I still remember watching this with jaw dropped.

      It's as taxing on the mind to learn how to play chess at a competitive level than it is on the body to learn any physical sport.
      Snooker sits comfortably in the middle where you need an intuitive knowledge of momentum and bounce angles, and the hand-eye coordination to apply the exact amount of force to the ball in the right angle so it spins (or not) as far as you need it to.

  • @graemejaye9359
    @graemejaye9359 5 років тому +54

    There are a lot of silly comments here, obviously made by those who don't understand the game. This not pool - this is a far more difficult game, on a larger table. A maximum of 147 points is rare, there have only been 139 maximum breaks made in professional tournament play since Steve Davis managed the first in 1982. Many professional players have never achieved even one! O'Sullivan is credited with being the most 'natural' player the game has ever had. Apart from anything else, he can play equally well either handed - a huge advantage on a table which is 12 x 6 feet.
    He deliberately blew the score (to a 146) in protest at the ridiculously low prize being offered for achieving a maximum. I can remember when £147,000 was on offer.

    Going for a 147 can often mean taking risks that could lose you the match if it goes wrong; so knowing what the prize is can inform the players shot selection. Just asking if there is a prize and how much it is isn't arrogance, it's common sense.
    He gets a lot of stick for stuff like this but he's right in the reasoning for it.
    As for why he seems to protest about the prize so much; there are a lot of players now who can win tournaments so taking that risk for a £4,000 or even a £10,000 prize and potentially losing the match due to trying to force harder shots, and missing out on the chance at a £100k-£250k prize for getting to the final just isn't worth it and that's not great for the viewers at home.
    He just wants the prize to reflect the difficulty and the risk; which in turn will make more players go for it and that creates better entertainment for us.

      Basically if he kept scoring a red-black pattern until all the reds were gone, he would have had the colored balls left, and if he made those, he would have scored a 147 the "max" score. He found out the prize was only 10k-12k so at 6:03 he instead hit the pink ball, which I'd worth one point less than the black this meant that he intentionally got a 146 as a middle finger to the prize money

  • @BillM1960
    @BillM1960 7 років тому +73

    I don't understand the rules, but I think I kindof picked up that it's red ball, other color ball, red ball, other color balls etc. and then spot the other color balls until there are no red balls left and then get all the other color balls at the end. I'm sure that's not exactly right but this guy is really really good. He seems to naturally think in advance almost effortlessly.

    • @fixpontt
      @fixpontt 7 років тому +56

      you are right, thats how it is played, colored balls have different values, the black is the most valuable (7 points), than the pink (6 points), blue (5 points) etc. so to reach the maximum you should play like red, black, red, black, red, black every time, but he deliberatley used the pink once insted of balck not to reach the maximum but max-1

    Im always amazed by watching these guys. Às anyone who has ever played pool knows its one thing to make difficult shots which a lot of people can do. Its a completely different thing though to be able to control the que ball like these guys do. Just amazing how accurate they are with their cue ball leaves
