- Landscape Photography | My Three Dawn Challenge:
It's been ages since I filmed a field based video and a recent holiday seemed like an ideal opportunity for a landscape photography challenge. In creating this challenge I decided upon three consecutive dawn rises and a constrained working area to see what I could come up with. I love this type of constraint in my photography as it helps me to focus on my immediate surrounding and stops me from wandering around aimlessly. Dawn is also my favourite time of day, so I am at my most sensitive to my surroundings and tend to interpret the details in the landscape more creatively.

Have to admit I've never been a morning person but you have certainly shown me what I miss ,
Excellent images again. Who knows I might give it a try in the new year. So can I thank you for all your advice in the last 12mths and looking forward to next 12. Happy New Year to and family
Happy to see you back in action. I love the simplicity of the second image. Lovely. The bank edge on the third image was distracting for me in spite of the wonderful graphics of the upper branches. Of course all three were quite wonderful!!
Thanks Becky. It’s always interesting to hear what people think about a selection. The 2nd one is my least favourite with the 1st being the image of the trip for me.
simply breathtaking.
Nice to see you in the field again Simon! Your enthusiasm to be out and about really shines through. All three photos were lovely in their own way, but my favorite thing was the ripples in the water in the second one, such beautiful patterns.
Whenever I watch your videos I feel that you could be dropped in nature anywhere on the planet and create stunning photos. Very inspirational!
That’s a very kind and motivating comment Robert, thank you.
Hey Simon - nice to see you up, out and about again. You have been missed. Man... that canal boating is restrictive on photography, and really makes you look differently at teh land around you. Only you could see the images you got and very abstract and the white canvas really makes em pop huh!? You take care and keep em coming Simon. Regards, Ewan
Cheers buddy. The with and without canvas views are always nice options I find. Not every images suits them though!
Fantastic film as always Simon, quite the challenge you set yourself but as always you blew us away with beautiful images, thanks for sharing.
Cheers John. not an easy one this one, but I was happy with the resulting film and images overall
Welcome back Simon! A quid to the duck at the end for timing! You always find beauty, even in the most challenging conditions. Cheers!
Absolutely, Thank you.
Half way through mate, loved that first shot of the lovey green water! I will be back with another comment lol 😂 great video idea buddy
That image was my favourite of the set Tom. Cheers.
Excellent video Simon and 3 beautiful but very different images, the last is fabulous. Really well explained how you work the scene and create the shots. Great stuff!
Thanks Anthony. It seems like ages ago this film now.
Silly Willow. Gives new meaning to the term "Lap(top) Dog." Challenging stuff, but you've pulled it off again! (And I must admit that with shots like this I have a friend who will toss handfuls of pebbles into the water to make pleasing conflicting ripples. The guy just has no dignity or respect.)
It was a great week Peter with three difficult photo sessions. I suspected they would be. The first morning that I mentioned was the best morning of the week and I missed it.
Now you are realy back. Outdoor in the morning and I can feel your happyness :-). The last image is my favorite.
Thank you. Yes, it's good to get out with the camera again. I was out again filming today too.
Brilliant video Simon. I could see your discomfort at the challenge & lack of “subjects” but a great lesson in creativity & you got got 3 good images as a result! First is my fave by a long way, thought it was superb! Thanks for the inspiration. All the best.
Thank you Geoff. The first was mine too.
Hillmorton Locks and Kent Road (Bridge 69), welcome to my neck of the woods - almost the back garden.
Fancy that Tony :-)
Another great video with yet a different spin 😊 I enjoyed all 3 photos but the first with the branches dipping into the gentle green waters is my favorite! What a great adventure this must have been!
Thanks Sharon. Yes it was a great week apart from the odd bump and knock of the boat.
Great to see you back out and about Simon and thank you for making this film on the 'cut' - it brought back memories of relaxing holidays on the canal! Each of the three images were stunners in their own right to me and I particularly like your fitting choice of background music to showcase the images. If push came to shove though I'd have to say 1,3 then 2 but that would also work in reverse order! There might have been 'slim pickings' but what you picked was as always most enjoyable. Glad you enjoyed your break and thanks again!
I completely agree with you sequence of choice Simon, both ways. The canals really are peaceful places to spend time.
Happy to see you out and about. I actually like the first image best. Something about the branches hanging over the green tinted water does it for me. But honestly, they're all excellent.
It’s my favourite as well Tom
Welcome back Simon. How to produce 3 images from nothing ! Canals are not good locations; I cycle along them regularly. Good reflections are the best they can do.
I figured it would be challenging Derek
I have hired canal boats on the Norfolk broads ( far less locks to deal with ) it’s by far the most relaxing holiday we have ever had and the photo opportunities are fantastic especially morning and evening! Glad you enjoyed it Simon.
Hi Neil
I’ve also had a week on the Broads in previous years. In reflection, the waterways are considerably wider too. I recall worrying less about hitting something.
Nice video Simon it was a difficult challenge in terms of landscape subject all photos where excellent for me it was between the first and last photo. It's great your back out and making a good recovery take care of yourself and thank you for sharing your video
Thanks John for your good wishes.
I really laughed at the comment "this is quite a creepy scene, I think it's quite attractive" Its rather accurate - but hearing that before seeing the photo I was thinking to myself - how is that possible... yet somehow you pulled it off. Well done!
Perhaps my vision is persuasive with my choice of music? Glad you liked it.
First image looks like the long exposure effect of water, final image is brilliantly haunting
A slight touch of dehaze helped a little there Paul.
Great to see you back in action Simon, just take care and don't force things! Happy springtime ;-).
Thanks Sarah, will do.
Too often, it seems the people who follow the really good photographers who vlog assume that every day, every place is just prime territory whenever and wherever you stop. After all, the 'subject' is always in place and all a photographer has to do is arrive, snap the photo, and go back to the posh van (or narrow boat). Right? There were years when I'd drive four hours, arrive for sunrise, and find nothing that seemed to warrant an exposure. Lots of trips later there might be one or two shots to show for all the time and work. Thanks for talking us through the process of "seeing" other possibilities and making something of them.
You are welcome Barry.
Good to see you out walking again.
Thanks for another great video.
Love the willow image.
Thank you Hans
Welcome back! So glad that you are on the mend. I loved the footage of the boat peacefully cruising down the canal, and I am most impressed by your dedication in rising so early for three mornings while on holiday! All three images are truly captivating but the last one is really special, in my humble opinion.
Thanks so much Su. Thanks as always for watching.
Glad to see you out and about again and (from what we see on camera anyway) not overdoing it this time! Strangely enough the shot I thought would be underwhelming is the one I prefer - the 1st shot. You really are a magician!! Yet again you have made me rethink a lot of my preconceptions - thanks.
Thanks ever so much Jan. That first image was my favourite for the reasons you give. I love images that come with a surprise!
Thanks for the lesson in hard work and perseverance, if you keep looking you get v good shots. (at least you do 🤣😂) Good to see the wife doing the driving!
Many thanks Alwyn. Yes, it does pay to be patient
just curiously, do you pick a vacation spot based on photography and bring your wife along, or do you pick a vacation spot and then figure out how to take photographs?
I never plan locations anymore. I’ve learned over the years that as long as it’s somewhere natural, I can always find something. The large scenes are always nice to have but I don’t mind grand vistas or small scenes. I find all equally satisfying.
Thanks for bringing us along with you on your canal holiday. A very engaging video Simon.
Many thanks Mike for the encouragement.
The second shot was very interesting - I would have gotten bogged down with that circular shape but I think you were right to simplify to the reflection. I really liked the third shot - there is an amazing feeling of aerial space between the foreground branches and the background trees
Many thanks for you feedback David. Yes, fitting a circle into a square frame is not easy, but it seemed to do OK.
Like a said before buddy, glad to see you out and about! To much fog lol 🤦♂️
What can I say, I'm fussy!
Good to see you back out with the camera Simon, the first image is the pick of the bunch for me. The colour of the water works well with the tones of the branches.
Thank you Steve. It was my favourite too.
I have watched several narrow boat u tube channels over the last couple three years and often wondered why more photographers didn't capitalize on the canals more. Great shots out of little to work with.
Thanks Terry, perhaps you may have answered the question here.
Nice having you back teaching!! Great stuff as always.
By the way, what tripod do you use? I am looking to get a heavier duty one. Thanks!
I've just recently moved over to Kingjoy. The C85 to be specific. It's a lovely piece of kit.
Hello Simon. What I really like about your videos is the fact that you show that is always possible to create beautiful work in the most common and overlooked places.
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Angelo. It’s funny that, I can say the same about your images too.
Lovely photos as usual Simon, glad to see that you are back out and about. I really like the first image!
Many thanks Jimmy. The first was my favourite too.
Nice to see you on your feet again, Simon!. Last picture is definitely my favourtite.
Thank you Wim
Good to see you back Simon. What an amazing film and set of images to kick start your return
That's very kind of you Liam
Well done Simon. Glad to see you back on your feet and enjoying the morning light.
Many thanks Jim. it was good to be out again.
Nice to see you out and about and injoying your time on the cannel.Nice photos
Thanks Bob
Okay, I'll say it:
Simon Booth is a sorcerer.
😂😂 Brilliant
love watching your creative process - it is very real.
Thanks Peter.
Love the images Simon and it’s great to see you back on my screen.
Thanks a bunch Ivan
Hi Simon great to see you out and about and hope you are recovering well. Superb images in just a short space on canal side which some of us would not even contemplate seeing images like you have. Great inspirational stuff keep it coming best wishes.
I'm doing OK thanks Mark. i have to go back in though in May it seems for another OP. Thanks for watching and sharing your appreciation.
Great to see you out and about again Simon. Don't push it too fast though!!
Point taken Martin
Great to see back out Simon. I really like, lovely all.. ❤
Thank you
good to see you back oot n aboot Simon, No 3 for me too. new tripod too? cheers and atb.
Well spotted Mick, cheers.
nice to see you :-)
Three stellar images, thanks for sharing!
Thanks Mark. Three very different images too on this one!
So glad to see you back again and you are doing well in rehab.
Many thanks Trey
Glad to have you back Mr.Booth !
Awe thank you.
Great to se the long boat. Nice images, thank you
Thanks David
The branches into the canal, what a great shot Simon.
My favourite too Iain
I'm happy to see you out again, Simon!
Thanks Al
I really enjoyed this film Simon. The river boat looks great fun and the image from the first morning I really love!
Cheers Ian. I felt I really had to work for those this time.
@@SimonBoothPhotography You aren’t joking either
Some spooky images in there :)
Aren’t they just.
So good to see you again! Great video.
Thanks Joanna
Loved the photos ! Good to see u back.
Thank you
Great to see you out again and bringing our attention to the Green Woodpecker call. Your first image is my favourite but all three are quite amazing. Just shows what you can find when you train your eye for creative detail. Many people would have found nothing to shoot!
The first was my favourite too Val
Beautiful 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Thank you
Persistence & creativity - love the reflection of the willow. Keep 'em coming, Simon. Your work is inspiring!
There’s nearly always something even in the most challenging of locations. Thank you 🙏
Welcome back, glad to have your videos back! Loved the first image and just shows the photographers eye, seeing something most would miss or not give the time
Thanks Joe. I tend to look for images in everyday life, even without a camera. I suppose it's a bit like running a marathon. You don't just show up at the event without doing the training. This is how I see it!
@@SimonBoothPhotography totally agree, including bad days where the images suck and all get deleted... you learn why you didn't like and go out again and do it right!!
@@joed.9646 Absolutely
Nice to see you out and about Simon. Loved the 2nd image with the reflections and the ripples. I liked the colour and patterns.
Thank you Susan
So glad you're back Simon. Even in places of 'slim pickings' you show your class in creating three memorable images. Genuinely inspiring and motivating stuff.
Thanks again Steven.
Good to see you getting back into the saddle again.... may be slim pickings... but sure looks relaxing... a nice change of pace for a few days... I think your first image was my favourite Simon, the chaos on the top and the serenity on the bottom really struck a chord... I like the last one too... but I think I would have done a pano crop, eliminating about 25% at the bottom of the frame... The boat trip looks so peaceful and a relaxing way to get out and about again... Thank You for sharing your adventure...
The first was my favourite image too Dave. Hopefully there was something for all tastes in this video
Hi Simon - I've been binge-watching your excellent videos and it occurred to me that perhaps you should consider producing a Woodland Photography Calendar identifying when the best dates are throughout the year for photographing ferns, wild flowers, pine cones, fungi etc. It would be really helpful as a guide to newbie woodland photographers like me. Keep up the good work!
Hi Dave, I thought this was a great idea but then I wondered if the channel itself does this to some degree. My films are nover out more than two weeks after they are filmed, so the back catalogue should be a good point of reference.
Welcome back Simon. You really have a special talent for seeing very beautiful images everywhere. You produce videos with a high content of photography and no bade jokes. If I could give away the award of the best UA-cam Photography channel - I would give it to you.
I like all three images, but there is something special with the second one - dreamy. The third is very atmospheric and beautiful.
That's such a lovely comment Neils and it's very much appreciated, thank you.
Nice to see you out and about Simon! Fun adventure and challenging scenarios....thanks for sharing.
Cheers Ted
Love all three but for me the third image is my favorite. The fog adds a mysterious element that pulls your mind in to the image. Great stuff.
Thanks Greg. Glad you like that one.
Honestly, I am finding it hard to choose which of the three I like best. The willow and the green water are just stunning. The foggy tress are amazing as well, but I have to go with the willow! Always a pleasure to watch you work.
Thanks Mary. it would have to be 1, 3 and 2 for me. We're all so different in our preferences aren't we!
Good morning! Welcome back, good to see you’re feeling well enough for an adventure. Best of luck to you.
Thank you John
Very nice Simon - enjoyed the vlog & great to see you 'out & about' again - as always some lovely creative images - I certainly wouldn't of even seen the first two images but great results...👍
Cheers for that John. Nice to see a comment from you.
Love watching Floating Your Boat already and have for a while. Nice crossover.
It seems the boating channels are dropping like flies at the moment Fred.
Great to see you back out and about.
Thanks for the inspiring video. It just proves, there is always an image there. You just need to look. Thanks
Too true Steve
Great episode Simon! Reminds me of Hyacinth Bucket and her "Waterside Supper with Riparian Entertainment." Haha
I need to Google that 🤔
I learn so much from your videos, particularly about the head space, you’re quite an inspiration. Thanks.
That's very kind of you to say Jeff, thank you
'Something from nothing' - well done Simon. I prefer the final image, although personally I might have gone for a slightly tighter crop to increase the focus somewhat on the trees in the background and their reflections. Good to see you back out with your camera.
Thanks for your comment Alan. I think crops in these instances are very much a personal choice as you say.
Great to see you out and about Simon. Your ability to find wow compositions, in seemingly uninspiring places, never fails to impress and inspire me. Kind regards - Robin
Thanks Robin. They seem to keep popping up don't they!
Great to see you out and feeling better. Just please don't over do it :)
Too late Brett, I'm already booked in for another OP in May. It seems I have been unlucky and the damn thing failed again...typical!
@@SimonBoothPhotography ahh. That’s a shame. Sorry to hear that Simon. Some of us just have weak muscles prone to tears. I’m a three time vet of the surgery.
How about I move to The UK and I’ll be your camera bag caddy and in return, you can teach me all you know? You don’t have a heavy bag to carry around and risk further tears and I get the education of a lifetime. 😉

Good to see you out shooting again. The weather made the task a challenge, but you adjusted to capture some wonderful images.
Thanks Micheal
Great to see you back out and about Simon. Hope the recovery is going well this time around. All great images, but I think the first one maybe pips it for me. Really beautiful tones and water colour.
The first was my favourite of the set too Stuart. Thanks for the well wishes.
A very interesting experience, you definitely had to work hard for those images. My favourites are #1 & #2. Hope you enjoyed the remainder of your trip.
Thanks for watching Phil. We had a really great time cheers
So great to see you back Simon, and as usual your selection of music enhances the beauty of your images. How nice to ease back into this slowly. Great plan. No more setbacks. Good wishes.
Carla
Thank you Carla for your well wishes. Unfortunately I do have to go back for another op in May. Third time lucky I hope. I love the power music has over imagery!
Hi Simon. I was hoping you'd share your narrow boat adventures soon. Really enjoyed watching you take on the challenge. Good to see you out and about again. Hope the recovery is going well.
Thanks Tim. Yes, the trip made for something a little different from me and pleased that I covered it, even if it was a holiday.
Excellent video. I guess which image is best is a very personal choice and also whether there should be figures in the cmposition etc to me misses the point as surely we all need to be individuals and produce what we believe to be the best images there is no absolute right or wrong. What I like about your presentations is that you explain your thought processes about how you plan and formulate the compositions. Something I personally find very difficult to achieve. Keep up the excellent work of helping us all to improve our skills.
You are absolutely 100% right on the money there Andrew.
Another wonderful video and great to see you out and about Simon. The houseboat thing looks a really nice way of travelling the landscape. I like all the images but I think the first one is my favourite although the last one is growing on me. 👍🏻
Thank you Martin. The first was probably may fav too.
Like the ethereal feeling in the first one. Each image is so unique and different. Lovely to see you able to get out again Simon. Worth waiting for.
Thanks so much Denise
So glad to see you are recovered, feeling better and back to doing your photography. Your videos are always so informative and at the same time I find them calming. I like all three of your images, with my favorite being the overhanging branches in the green tinted water. I feel you have a great eye for composition and finding beauty in the landscape.
Thank you Ann. It’s always nice when I hear the the videos are calming to watch. The music I feel really makes a difference!
Good to see you back in action! Lovely adventure on the water. Love the willow reflection. The last image is so atmospheric! Well done!
Thank you Karen. I think there was an image for all tastes in this film
Great to see you back out again Simon. You have truly inspired me to look further when an image isn’t immediately obvious. I love all three of your images but number three is the one I would love to have taken!!
Hi Mary
Thank you for watching the video. Hope you are successful in your own search with the camera.
Wonderful imaginative images Simon, and so good to see you back in action.
Thans Simon
Glad to see you back on your feet again and back on UA-cam. Great video. My favorite is the second on in the series, the reflected tree.
Thanks Jeff. I wasn’t sure if I’m honest how well that one would be received.?
loved the scenes with the long boat, those locks looked like they were fun to go thru. wonderful photos
It’s so much fun David. A whole new experience for us too.
I really liked the second photo. So with the ripple in the water.
Thanks Wim
Great to see you out and about again, go steady, lovely video
Thank you
Simon, the image was nice but my opinion is that shadowy figure midway through the image on the right would of made the photo perfect; a figure walking away from the camera. Another option would of been a shadowy figure again on the right side walking away from the camera but much closure to the camera. My first opinion I feel would of done it but again, your scene was very nice but the person would of been the cherry on top. I can’t believe this is the first composition I have thought was not great for you!
Hi Greg, I mentioned the option of the figure. I knew there’d be some who would prefer that to an empty path. I’m not really a fan of people in my images but I do get why some would.
@@SimonBoothPhotography Simon, I know you mentioned your lack of people in your photos and that’s the way you like your photos but may I suggest (if you possible have a person available to use as a model or you could do a composite with you in it) you try doing one and submit and ask our opinion? I think it might be interesting. I know you are the photographer and you post what you like but I know you also post and explain what you are doing to help your readers learn from you, right? You and your trees have taught me a lot and I look forward to your posts and was concerned when you got I’ll and needed surgery. I would love to see your style include maybe a recommendation from your followers.
Hi Simon ! Wonderful video !!!
Thank you
Love that ripple image.
Thank you

I think I just love the challenge Wim. Thanks again for commenting.
