As a another addict listening to Paul speak here I can relate to all those horrible feelings you get whether it’s the gambling, booze or the drugs. Sitting alone for hours gambling on your phone ending up transferring money around to try and get enough to make a deposit and that sometimes feels even better than getting a winner. Fair play to him for speaking out. I’ve struggled with all of the above for years and getting into the rooms as he said and surrounding yourself with other addicts is the best way to get out of the horrible mental state that this disease can get you. You have to live with it forever so you need the support. It’s out there. NA AA CA GA etc. Surround yourself with likeminded people.

When you get to zero then you start looking for quick money. Loans, lines of credit, credit cards, payday loans.
Well done Paul 👏 my dear mum beat it 35 years ago and never drunk again and she had fantastic life without drink

Merson and others might have been big name footballers, but unfortunately I can relate to this. Doesn't matter what you've got, who you are, it can happen to anybody.... certainly has with me.
Gambling advertising should be banned from football. Full stop. Every club needs to boycott their betting sponsors. It's a disease.
As usual with football greed will take precedence. Especially with the money involved in the far east gambling companies. Completely without morals.

I have always liked Merse, and i think he is brave to be so honest about his struggles. With just one exception, and although i may have missed it I haven't seen him speak with the same truth and honesty about the effect his addiction has had on his partners, his children, his close friends. Having been brought up in a gambler's home i can tell you its a miserable life, your every memory is shaped by his mood swings, the feeling of safety and trust is also pulled away from your childhood. Addictions are insidious.
I struggle alot with alcholism and gambling, Isolated myself from my family and everyone I know but when he said he was happy that he had no money left and he didn't need to do it anymore he was happy. i can relate to this I mean I don't want to do it but as soon as I have money I ah like in the zone for alc and gambling. I can relate too much to this bc I am exactly like this how I have held down jobs to support myself I have no idea
I was on a smaller scale but similar because even though it was less money was still a weeks wages. Best thing I ever done was Gamstop, I could do a football or horse racing bet no problem. But those online slots are so dangerous. Fair play to Merson, it’s hard.
It will eventually lead back to slots, compulsive gamblers can’t gamble at all. Talking from experience

I'm definitely going to read your book paul as I've had an awful 9 months mentally.
Compulsive behaviour is like a hungry beast. The one skill that therapists have explained is an elastic band idea where the Compulsive thoughts are stretching you.
Sitting with the uncomfortable feelings is a practice and eventually the elastic band snaps and you can really celebrate the win after not responding to the Compulsive thoughts. No matter how crazy the thoughts are.

I will never understand this society's addiction with alcohol. Most people are enslaved to it and they don't even realise. Remove alcohol from society and watch most people struggle to cope.
When you say to someone "I don't drink" it's like they can't comprehend it. It's so engrained in our culture and it's bad.

If weed was legal other drugs would be consumed and sold less while people would start growing their own and someone would miss out on millions

Paul you are helping me mate, I'm an Army veteran who has a drink problem, I'm in tears listening to you. I haven't took that step to go to meetings I don't want to admit defeat but I need help, thank you 👏
People who don't want to confess their helplessness like to call themselves selfish. Helplessness is our biggest fear because it is true.
It takes a strong mind to admit this, addictive behaviors are more common than most people think and it’s not just drugs and alcohol that people are addicted too. Eating more than you need is an addiction too.

I pray for you to find Jesus Christ, Paul, as well as anybody struggling with sin. Jesus Christ alone can save from addiction, many people transfer addictions otherwise because that spirit is still there. There are curses and unclean spirits ruining people’s lives and the door is open because of sin and unforgiveness but Jesus Christ has paid the penalty for all who call out to Him sincerely.

@@rikkiswift9105 You’re correct, you’re not being funny. Jesus Christ is above all deities and fads and hypes. You may think what you have said is true, but it’s not. Cristiano Ronaldo is an example of somebody who has an addictive spirit that got his father in alcoholism and the guy died early. Ronaldo has simply transferred the addiction to football, fitness, and vanity, and these are things that society generally celebrates and accepts, but the spirit is still there and he is not in control. Nobody overcomes sin without grace, energy cannot be created, or destroyed, only transferred (thermodynamics), and Jesus Christ had all of the sin transferred onto Him on the cross, and He’s changing lives around the world, but the Devil does not want people seeing this on TV which is why Jesus is rarely glorified in mainstream culture in any meaningful way.
Take care, Rikki. This isn’t superstition like you think, I and many others have seen great miracles that show the power of God. Jesus will show you that He is real and He is God if you truly seek Him.

Weed is arguably a lot worse than drinking. Smoking narrows the arteries leading to the heart and brain and this in turn can lead to heart attacks or strokes. Plus, there is the threat of cancer.
Bob Marley was a fierce proponent of weed. It was the weed that ended up killing him.

@@footballequalslife7452 If weed was a freely available as alcohol and as socially acceptable as alcohol, the negative effects on society would easily dwarf the current effects of alcohol. I live in the Netherlands. Only a small minority of people here smoke, but all of them to a man is a waster in my experience. As from Marley dying from cancer, the sheer amount of weed he smoked certainly did not help.

My god, not still talking about his addiction?? We ALL can hit the bottle and drugs…. EVERYONE has difficult times BUT we ALL do not turn to drugs etc …… nobody has a gun to their heads forcing people to take to the bottle……. Stand up and be strong …. Face difficulties and NO NOT start relying on substances because it DOES NOT solve ANYTHING ….. it just delays and make things so much worse ? ….. sorry to be so direct …. Truth hurts !
