Haven't watched it yet but damn those are solid
I got a 1979 Les Paul Gold Top in 1979. After a year it was stolen from a storage unit in Mableton Georgia. We used to practice there. I wish I could find it again. I was 17 when my father helped me buy it. My heart was crushed, and still is. God bless you DAD, RIP !!! I think I bought it from Premier Music in Atlanta, GA.

Had 2 of these back in 70’s goldtop an cherry red....and my gold top I had p90s...they had punch through a ampeg vt22....yep I’m old.
Awesome rig, man. Those Ampeg V amps were "take no prisoners" great.
Old and remorseful. 😉
Can only imagine how cool it was to hear The Yardbirds, Deep Purple, Hendrix, The Stones, and so many others for the first time......

Wow this one wont last! One of the best sounding pauls ive ever heard
There is just something magical about a Les Paul loaded with P90's. I actually owned a black '79 Deluxe and those mini humbuckers are really narly . I only got rid of it because it really bugged me how odd it looked. Still I ended up replacing it with a 2011 Les Paul Classic Custom, which I adore and is perfect for what I like to play.

Nice guitar. Not sure the control knobs have been changed as you say, as I think Gibson were using speed knobs again that year. My '79 Standard has the same control knobs and I've owned that one since new, so I know they haven't been swapped out.
He was really feelin breakdown but honestly same here. It’s got such an infectious groove to it!

I have several late Norlin era Gibson’s (standard body no sandwich .. 3 piece maple neck)
GREAT value . Picked up a SMOKIN’ black beauty a couple of days ago
One big difference is the lack of top carve though. WAY less ‘dish’ than the 50’s ones. I wish they had that DEEP sloping top carve but they don’t
I actually love the mini-humbuckers that would have been fitted originally.

I really like that! An affordably vintage guitar, with an even more vintage vibe. Plus, it sounds great! Mark - can you do a Gibson "The Paul" one day? I've got an original 1978 issue, and I'd love to see your take on one of that era versus the recent tribute. My two-penny-worth... it's a great, simple, good quality Gibson that's never let me down in the 40 years since I bought it new.

I was just watching an older Guitar of the Day episode in which Marc was playing through a 4 x 10 Hot Rod, and it sounded much better. I love Deluxe Reverbs, but whenever the volume's over 3, it gets gravelly, making every guitar sound pretty much the same. With the Hot Rod, there's more head space, so you get to hear the distinguishing characteristics of each individual models. My two cents (which is pretty much all I've got to my name ...)

I wonder if that Deluxe Reverb sounds so good because it’s hand wired.. because mine sounds nothing like Mark’s when it’s overdriven.
Get a 68 custom deluxe reverb. They sound great cranked up through the normal or first channel. The trick is to keep the bass pretty low. Only thing about the 68 custom DR is every one I have played through had something wrong with it.

Hi! I have the same guitar...79 goldtop deluxe, but original p90 (original) and different but original mechanics. I’m quite sure of the original p90. ....marvellous guitar!!!

My 1980 deluxe GT came stock with those same speed knobs and metal tulip tuner buttons. I did the same and dropped in P-90.s. It sounds better than this one but that DR is not the best amp for it.

I like basses - what's so wrong about them? You might be surprised to learn that some of us 'regular' guitar players also love and play basses.
The gold top with P90s is the only incidence where I like a gold guitar. P90s are hands down the greatest pickup Gibson ever made.

Sounds great.....intonation is dead on. Lots of bite, plus sustain. Really nice.
Hy Marc, I've noticed that the amp does rarely match soundwise the reviewed guitar, it doesn't do them justice ( this goldtop sounds ok'ish....) Maybe make two sound demo's: first with the usual amp (as a standard refference), second with the most matching amp. So you can sell both- guitar and amp... ;-)
You guys ever find out what brand of p90s the minis were swapped out for?
Nick curran had a similar lp. I think same late 70s
Smokin , gold top LP , P90's , I am luvin this guitar , it was specifically made to rock n &*%^ing roll , noon schmoon crank that fender up to 11 and see what ya get. this guitar is pretty too , the gold , the mahogany the maple and rosewood , the clear gold knobs , looks so good , way better than a bass.

He used to play a riff ,not a song , the same riff on all the various pickup selections , it was over in 2 minutes and change , you've come a long way baby , I'm talking to you Jen , you're all right too Mark
So what were the original knobs? I had an ‘81 deluxe, same specs but with stock with gold speed knobs.
Not only is a P-90 Les Paul so much better than a bass, it is also superior sounding to any other guitar. Thanks Mark!
