And welcome to this walk around the heart of the Warwickshire town of Rugby - the birthplace of none other than the sport of rugby! But there's much more to this town than that, and a walk around the town centre strikes up a number of intriguing stories and windows to the past :) Now Rugby is of course famous as the place where the sport was invented, but in the early 20th century, the town was also the site of a number of groundbreaking industrial innovations too. Most famously, Rugby was the place where the jet engine was invented by Frank Whittle, before it went on to be tested in nearby Coventry, where a statue stands in memory of Whittle. Given its industrial prowess, Rugby was a hugely significant place for manufacturing during the Second World War, yet it somehow managed to escape the same devastation that befell Coventry in the Blitz. Some say that the reason for this was because one of the Mitford sisters, and a personal friend of Hitler himself, was staying in a suburb of Rugby during the war!
Tom Brown's Schooldays also became the inspiration for the wonderful series of novels by George MacDonald Fraser that was the Flashman Papers. A delightful introduction to VIctorian history and all of them Fabulous fun.
I really need to visit Rugby. I have never visited this town and it needs to happen. I enjoyed this video but l am amazed that very few people seem to be around the town. Rugby seems worth a visit and isn’t too far away from my home town of Wolverhampton
Now the town is just full of money grabbing council workers who dont give to hoots about the place!! just in it for the money and not the public!! use to be a wonderful place to meet and shop. now just buy it online as saves you a fortune on parking and stops the rugby Rangers watching everything you do!! everything that was good about the town is now being moved to Junction 1!! You seen it in your video.. so many shops up for LET or boarded up .. There all moving away because it's too expensive to pay the rent and fees.. Ive not shopped in my hometown for nearly 4 years now.. WHY? because it's just now banks, Chairty shops and cafes!!
