    PS4 and Xbox one won’t age well because of dependence on internet for multiplayer, patches, day one updates, and etc.

      He means that when Microsoft and Sony stop supporting the consoles and no longer let you play or do anything online, the console may be rendered useless because almost everything to do with it needs support from Microsoft or Sony. Unless you have some really good single player games, which there aren't as many as there were on other consoles, the console wouldn't be worth playing.

      not sure about the current generation, but on the 360 you can download the official patches from unnoficial sites and install them from a flashdrive, no modding required, it is the same exact file the console downloads from xbox live, and they dont have any DRM just like demos so it is super easy. just search for "xbox 360 title updates" and youre good to go

    fun, somewhat, unrelated fact: you can use the gameboy color as a tv remote with the game Mission Impossible. Which includes a tv remote feature, making use of the IR port on the color.

      Old phones and PDAs used to come with infrared emitters and receivers. This was one of the most common ways to get data to and from these devices in the late '90s and early 2000s, but it was very slow and unreliable. My current smartphone has an IR emitter as well (no receiver though, of course), but I've only toyed around with it a few times; it's not that useful in this day and age.

      I still use my PSP 3000 several times a week. Mostly at night in bed watching movies.
      I never use UMDs though as I have CFW and I have a nice program that converts video files into PSP-compatible files so I have a large collection of stuff to watch.
      I also have a collection of emulators which means I can keep my original consoles and games in my cupboard and not have to set up and dismantle things all the time.
      PSP was way ahead of its time.
      I have the standard battery and it's still going strong today. Holds a decent charge and it doesn't take long to charge it from when it's completely empty.

    I fixed a gamecube that had a "broken" drive. It refused to read disks. The issue seems somewhat common but it only takes about 45 minutes to fix. All you need to do is tighten a potentiometer to a certain resistance level using a voltage meter. The hardest part is the potentiometer is at the bottom of the gamecube so you need to take everything on top of it off, then fix the screw, then put everything back. There are a lot of screws in the way to get to it which is the hardest part.

    • @neenm4299
      @neenm4299 6 років тому +6

      Our gamecube refused to load the disks once. We fiddled with it and father just said "Maybe becouse it was kept in a cold room and it suddenly entered a warm place?" so we left it near the oven to warm up and about and hour later since we were doing something it was back up and working. This happened on multiple ocasions and each time we just left it to warm up.

    I completely understand what you mean. 16 bit has aged best in my opinion because of the beautiful colour palette and the fact the games don’t need to look amazing. They weren’t the most technologically advanced even when they were new compared to animated movies and more.

    • @retrosoul8770
      @retrosoul8770 6 років тому +6

      Agreed, 16-bit games are timelessly great looking, it's hand drawn high quality pixel art how could you go wrong. Just look at Thunder Force IV, SOR2, Alien Soldier, Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger, MMX, Shining Force etc

    • @GeorgiaRidgerunner
      @GeorgiaRidgerunner 6 років тому +4

      Retro Soul I agree the 16 bit era was pretty good artwork and good game play....speaking of amazing looking games don't forget donkey Kong country and hagane..

    • @retrosoul8770
      @retrosoul8770 6 років тому +1

      Hagane is such a great looking and easily one of the very best action platformers on Snes. Very much like Revenge of Shinobi I think ppl shy away from it because of its difficulty, and that's a real shame, because the game is very fair. DKC looks good too, with its computer image thing lol but I do prefer a more traditional sprite art design.

    • @GeorgiaRidgerunner
      @GeorgiaRidgerunner 6 років тому

      Retro Soul I liked it because the backgrounds were marvelous the game play was easy the game wasn't too long or short ..hagane yeah that's one hard game but if you get stuck you can slide by most enemies...I have to admit I'm a bit ashamed of myself I forgot about Maggie (my fiance calls MegaMan x Maggie the joke is lost on me to be honest) any way that was an outstanding game as far as the graphics and those rocking sound tracks... The game play was good but it was a little to easy to beat the Mavericks...

      I am not denying here what you just wrote but this is something I would like to bring up which I found somewhat disappointing about the Sega Saturn and PSX.
      While the 16 bit generations such as the Genesis and the SNES were a great step up compared to the 8 bit generation and a lot of home computers (even the PC at the time could not portray quite some games as well as the Genesis and SNES), I was still very disappointed that the Genesis and SNES could not do Arcade ports on the same level of quality which was still a step up compared to the 16 bits.
      This seemed finally to have been resolved (at least mostly) with the Saturn and PSX which games could have graphic and effect quality as good as the old Arcade cabinets.
      Gamers could finally play Arcade accurate ports, but more, imagine what popular genres from the Genesis and SNES would have been like if most of them had stuck to being 2D but now with 32 bit quality graphics.
      Unfortunate 3D at the time became more and more a hype despite that the graphics like mentioned in this video were very jagged and ugly, and 2D was considered an outdated concept for the most part until it returned in force on the Gameboy Advance which showed that SNES style graphics are still very pretty.
      Both Saturn and PSX still had their share of 2D games, the Saturn more than the PSX I think though the problem now is that a lot of its games never got ported to newer consoles.
      Still this generation, the Saturn, PSX, and Nintendo 64 is mostly known by gamers for its early and now ugly 3D games because their 2D games libraries barely are remember with the exception of some of the more dedicated owners.
      (major annoyance for me is that the Saturn never got a 2D Sonic, Sonic 4 if you will, or a Phantasy Star 5)

      Plenty of 5th gen and up systems aged well IMO. PS2, GameCube, Wii, GBA, and Dreamcast are all very playable today, mainly due to either being moddable, reliable, or easy to obtain. ive had two game cubes, one of them
    i apparently poured water in when i was little, and it still worked, until about 4 or so years ago, then i got a new one and the disc drive seems to be starting to dwindle in its quality, it progressively has a harder time reading discs, and now can’t read three discs it use to be able to. so i either i’m either very unlucky or the drives just fail faster than most consoles

    Good stuff. The one thing that was missed was the early PS2 consoles with the Disc Read Error issues. My launch PS2 had it. Also my Gamecube would overheat and crash (which I solved by replacing the fan with a higher-RPM one; the stock fan ran too slowly out of the box). Can't agree more about the 5th-gen consoles with their dated visuals.

    8:55 Gamecubes along with the PS2 were common to have a laser go bad or a disc drive needing to be re-calibrated. Usually because the lens got dirty but they tend to go bad after so many years.

    My GameCube (manufactured around 2003) started having disc read errors caused by perceived overheating- that is, the system's heat sensors went bad, and it would stop reading the disc as soon as it reached a normal operating temperature!
    IIRC, I looked around on the internet at the time, and it turned out that this was a known defect affecting a moderate-sized batch of consoles. Fortunately, I'd had the GCN for 11 months, and there was still a month left on the warranty!

    I broke my Nintendo DS Lite upper screen in 2014 when i was trying to clean it, the crystal liquid just spreaded though the screen and the image got washed out and with ghosting, it was like a old CTR TV. From that time until this year i almost never played my NDS again, but earlier this year i got it fixed, replaced the entire upper screen and fixed one of the speakers (it didn't worked, i had to use headphones). Good to see that there's still people in Brazil that fixes NDSs, and its still fairly easy to find replacement parts for this console, and its not that expensive. Now i'm using my NDS to emulate Game Boy and Game Boy Color, been playing Zelda Link's Awakening DX, and works flawessly.
    I'm now just looking for a replacement for my flashcard, its an original R4 Revolution v2, still works, but its limited to 2 GB SD cards, i have only four 2 GB cards left working, all Kingston, but nowdays i can't find 2 GB cards, not even Kingston cards, its all Sandisk and most 2 GB cards on the market now are pirated, i tried and it didn't worked very well, its not worth. There will be a time that these SD cards will stop working, so i might as well get a new flashcard that supports SDHC cards.

      I own a dozen consoles over the years, and pretty much all of them function just fine, and some of these I picked up used from other people. The only console that had to be replaced was a slim PS2, which kept eating discs. But we didn't have it that long, and we quickly replaced with it a used fat PS2 which still works just fine. I guess we're pretty careful, although I did drop my Wii and yet it still functions years later.

DOn't know why he singled out PSP (already roasted the shit out of the other systems so why the fuck not?) but yeah depends on how well you handle the system; if it gets dropped/bumped around a lot and stuff then it will last shorter/possibly burst, or if you treat it right it can last years on end

    I have a PS3 Super Slim and a Wii U and they aged well. Now, about the Sega Saturn, the Saturn was a 2D/3D powerhouse. It was backwards-compatible with Saturn game discs and music CDs. It relied on a memory cartridge that acted as a memory card, which would save your game data. The Sega CD/Sega Mega CD also had a memory cartridge and it was backwards-compatible with Sega CD/Sega Mega CD and music CDs, too. 2D and 3D games would play smoothly on the Saturn. In Japan and other countries, the Saturn sold like hotcakes, but here in the USA, the Saturn didn't sell well because most stupid Americans never paid any attention to the Saturn. Non-Saturn fanboys/fangirls were more into the N64 and the PS1.

    Also the OG Gameboy deserves to be the first console on this list, the thing is built like a tank and would probably still work if dropped off of a five story building but god damn that screen really sucks. I’ve had a fair few of those too and never had one with a great screen.

      This method requires some trial and error, but I find it reliable since the ones I've fixed still work after 2 years. You have to take apart your cd drive though. Anyway, the idea is to reposition the optical eye to look directly to the cd, a job that the plastic pads of the drive rails don't help much :P . By opening the case of the cd case carefully slide the drive all the way to the right, the farthest from the place you put the cd. You should be able to see a white clip on it. Lift it carefully up and right (I really can't describe it better :P . There are videos that show how) By now you should be able to lift the whole drive without its plastic case and see the damn white pads the cause the problem. Cut a small piece of duct tape (say ca the size of the pad). Cut a hole in the middle, too, and place it under the pad that's located to the right, as far from the place of the cd holder and reassemble to test. Remember you have to reset the pot in order not to damage the lens. Hope that helps, I may make a video on this.

    Personally, I don't think many consoles have aged poorly except the ones that tried waaaay too hard to be cutting edge. The N64's I think is the most stand out example, with that ugly forced anti-aliasing, and plus the system was a pain to program for effectively, leading to tons of games that ran like garbage.
    The SNES did okay in almost every regard except processing speed and audio. Sample based music on a console was a good idea, but the severe lack of RAM and the guassian filter on the SPC700 really holds back the audio unless you're willing to do some crazy stuff to work around limits like some artists such as Dean Evans were.
    People complain about the Mega Drive's sound chip a lot, but the only thing really holding that back in most games was developers being too lazy to learn FM synthesis, that wasn't really a fault of the hardware.
    I think the old tech that has aged the worst though is old pre-built and proprietary computers. If you want an example of something pretty much useless now, just take a look at the Black & White and early/budget Color Macintosh computers. Very few of them have historical value, and they can't run much software of note since there weren't many games for them and a lot of the stuff on them was basically just business applications.
    To make matters even worse, they use SMD capacitors which NEED to be replaced. I got an LC II for free recently, and two of the capacitors exploded and the remaining 14 on the motherboard had all started to leak, and it had the infamous leaky power supply as well, so all in all I had to replace 20 capacitors to get the darned thing even working.

    • @retrosoul8770
      @retrosoul8770 6 років тому +6

      Very nice to run into someone who understands the 16-bit systems. Too many ppl are brainwashed by James Rolfe or Watchmojo.
      Anyway, agreed, Nintendo was naive to focus purely on aesthetics and neglect hardware performance. And for audio, it wasn't really until 1994-5 until games started to sound truly great due to bigger carts (3megs+) CT, FFVI, DKC, Super M, King of Dragons, Tales of Phantasia etc.
      Meanwhile the Gen/MD had crystal clear audio from the beginning (1989) with Revenge of Shinobi, Midnight Resistance, Thunder Force 3 etc (Japanese games anyway). There were western exceptions like Comix Zone (Howard Drossin) and Adventures of B&R (1995) (Jesper Kyd) but it was such lost potential when most devs didn't bother to learn how to properly program FM sound, creating false impressions everywhere on its awesome capability. Both systems have their pros and cons and are fantastic for their own reasons though.
      The N64 however, is just a poorly designed machine. Nintendo (foolishly) designed a unitary ram architecture where the cpu and the gpu can't simultaneously access the ram, meaning the system can't run at its fullest potential, thus creating performance bottlenecks (many games suffer from a poor frame rate) that never should have existed given the numerical specs. A dumb problem to have to say the least, the small cart sizes is only one issue the system has. Regardless still love many of its games though, but there's no doubt that system could have been alot better (much like the Saturn).

    • @SpeedySPCFan
      @SpeedySPCFan 6 років тому +2

      Those beliefs are founded on people not being very well educated though. The SNES and Mega Drive/Genesis had significantly different sound hardware, and neither one is actually worse.
      I plan to make a full video on the Mega Drive's sound hardware, but in short:
      The Mega Drive has a cleaner and richer overall sound due to sounds being synthesized in real time, but suffers from being difficult to learn programming on due to the complexity of FM synthesis. If you learn it however, it's much easier to make amazing sounding instruments with.
      The SNES uses samples, making it very easy to get to the point of "good" sound design, but it suffers from an incredibly small amount of sound RAM (limiting how high quality samples can be), and forced sound interpolation in order to hide sound artifacts as a result of how the chip processes samples.
      All in all though, it comes down to the composer to make something good. Neither chip is objectively better, just different. If you want examples of amazing Mega Drive music, listen to anything by Hitoshi Sakimoto, TechnoSoft, Jesper Kyd, and Matt Furniss. If you want examples of amazing SNES music, listen to anything by Dean Evans.
      Dean is one of the few composers that I think really makes the SNES shine, although to give less credit to the SNES, he had to use a lot of tricks to get games like Waterworld to sound as good as they do.

    • @retrosoul8770
      @retrosoul8770 6 років тому

      Speedy, fully agreed. It just comes down to ignorance basically. Many of us were kids during the 16-bit era and haven't done proper research nor play many 16-bit games since, so alot of folk come on the internet and regurgitate the same nostalgic, juvenile perspective they had when they were kids, and in some cases it's very annoying.

    My Wii disc reader stopped working. It's an original Wii, with the GameCube backwards compatibility. I just emulate Wii and GameCube games using Dolphin now.

    The GameCube disc drive failure not only wasn't a very common problem but it was an issue limited to the launch models.

    The n64 looks like ass on youtube or an hd tv. If you play it on a old school crt tv the framerate is increased and its not blurry. The colors are a tad bit over saturated but not that much. Same thing with the ps1.

    • @YSN
      @YSN  6 років тому +1

      They do look better on a CRT (like anything pre-HDMI), but I've played them when they where new on CRT television and thought the graphics where awful even then. In the end it doesn't really matter. Good games transcend bad graphics.

    • @jonathanstuart7354
      @jonathanstuart7354 6 років тому +1

      Well we both have different opinions. But you have to agree, consoles likr the Genesis, MasterSystem, Nes, Snes look way better on a CRT than they do on a HD Tv.

    • @YSN
      @YSN  6 років тому +1

      No worries, everyone's got a different opinion on these sorts of things. Definitely agree on the CRTs. Old systems look so much better on them. I think CRTs have a natural anti-aliasing effect that game developers had in mind when making their games. That combined with the lack of scan lines is what makes older games look so bad on modern TVs.

    • @Wflash00
      @Wflash00 6 років тому

      There's no amount of technology in a CRT to increase the framerate of the N64 that HDTV's do. The N64 has that at it's own hardware level, not in the TV, and I agree that it would *look* okay, but no framerate improvements.

    I wholeheartedly agree with you on the 5th gen consoles. And about the Sega Saturn, it's actually the best 5th gen console in retrospect. The 2D capabilities and the Japanese exclusives made the Saturn age like a fine wine, unlike its more popular 3D contemporaries.

      Retro Soul The Saturn versions of the 2D games were far better than their PS1 counterparts, especially when it came to Arcade ports like X-Men vs. Street Fighter. More frames of animation, more background details, etc. When it came to 3D games, it was the opposite. The Saturn was built for 2D gaming whereas the PS1 was built for 3D.
      The only exception is Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night. The Saturn port was ass.

    Only consoles that will age well are the snes , Nes, megadrive and another consoles that play 2d games . 3d games look bad because they keep on improving making the previous look like ass

      charger master sure the nes pin connectors fail but you can buy new ones one eBay for eight dollars ...its almost impossible to find parts for disc drive consoles... You can find the lasers but the other parts arent easy to find

    The origenal toaster NES. I replaced the 72 pin connector, dissabled the lockout chip, and still there is a pretty high failure rate. If I ever were to sell it, I would probobly replace the 72 pin again. I also don't really play the origen hardwhere very much anymore, but if I did, it is honestly worth it just to get a top loader since my TV, and I think most modern TVs, don't have composite anyway.

    5th gen consoles look perfectly fine on a proper CRT display. It's when you try to play them on an HDTV where things go out the window imo.

    Game Boy Advance SP and Nintendo DS Phat both used rechargeable Li-Ion batteries before PSP, but it’s a small thing. I remember not caring at all about PSP at the time, but now that I have two (1000 and GO), it’s my favorite handheld from that period. Surprisingly, both’s batteries are still going strong (knock on wood).

    I had an original Wii (2006 white one). The disk drive was defective from the moment I turned it on. It would only load about half the time, and in-game disk read errors were way too common. Ended up buying a brand new one in 2010. I still have it and have not had a single problem with it.

    Failing hardware is one of the main reasons that emulation is so important. I wish people would talk about that aspect a little more.
