How the Xbox 360 DVD Security was Defeated | MVG

  • In 2005 mere weeks after the launch of the Xbox 360 in North America, hackers found a method to exploit the DVD drive firmware and defeat security by allowing for backup DVD's to load and run. This is a look back and how this was achieved and how Microsoft responded.
    Note : I will be covering King Kong/JTAG/RGH in Part 2. Xbox 360 security is a massive topic to cover :)

    Did you know that when Microsoft released the update for ap25 (unique console disc checks) it actually didn't work on the original hitatchi dvd drives since their firmware size was too small to add the feature. Anyone with an hitatchi from that point on had a permanent dvd drive mod. Also after a point Microsoft tried to make ap25 checks so advanced and complicated that actually legit consoles with old drives and lasers would fail the tests and get flagged for ban. Microsoft actually banned a ton of legit consoles, and then later undid these bands as well as gave these users free xbox live. From that point on Microsoft stopped banning users for the ap25 check failure flags and ultimately screwed themselves over in the cat and mouse game

      Someone hacked my account when FIFA 2012 came out. Microsoft wanted to ban my console since it originated in Japan. I bought the XBOX practically brand new from someone from Japan on Ebay. Some how I recovered it and was refunded all the money they spent. Thankfully I don't add credit cards to my payment options on any system so they used the credit on the account. The fact that it took 2 weeks for them to investigate it really bothered me. My first and only "Darren" moment led me to a supervisor and they told me why I was banned. Once I explained how I bought my 360, my account was active the next day.

      I love the console hacking scene and x360 era was a great time. Not only could you backup your games but could play them online. c4e was an epic guy, I was always idling #fw on efnet to get the latest scoop from the horses mouth. The work ethic of him was unbelievable, anything suspicious ever happened he would jump right on it and check xbox live logs for any new suspicious checks and if any were ever present he would come up with a new brilliant way to defeat microsoft and get a new firmware update out, he remained on top of things for years right up till the near end of life of the console, god how microsoft must have hated him with the cost of R+D, new firmware and checks, new hardware and drives, only to be defeated by c4e within days. Haven't frequented efnet in quite awhile and hope c4e is living a great life cause the guy deserves it.

    • @gigabytemon
      @gigabytemon 4 роки тому

      I think most of the losses companies incur is when they spend money on an anti-piracy system that's broken. They paid for something that didn't work and they can't get a real refund for it. They're still selling consoles though - you can't run pirated games without at least having the machine to run them on. So really the biggest loss is spending so much to stop people from doing something they're just going to figure a way out to do anyway.

    • @darkness74185
      @darkness74185 4 роки тому +1

      a good number of sales of one game is when it's first released, so they'd definitely want to have a way to at least prevent people from cracking it on the first night of the game release. Though unfortunately the method chosen to do so (looking at you Denuvo) often means the game initially would run like shit until people manage to break that little security and then the game removes said security next patch so it can finally run at 60 fps again

    • @sedatmehmed4371
      @sedatmehmed4371 4 роки тому +4

      @@gigabytemon Put yourself in the game developer position. Would you develop games for a platform which is so easily pirated that no one will buy your game? Companies sell consoles nowadays at breaking zero point or even at some loss just to get you on the platform and rely on games to turn revenue. Piracy is bad end of discussion - it is exploitation of someone's hard work. How would you feel if someone make you work and didn't pay you? I strongly support homebrew projects and hacks to enable user software - running linux on xbox seems exciting. But piracy - no thanks.
      Anyway why companies make secure the platforms - because someone gas to develop games for them. And the goal is not to make the system impenetrable but rather make it hard to hack. If it is hard to hack it will be limited to enthusiasts. As we see today piracy has diminished a lot - it is just a lot easier to pay for the game rather than risking your hardware or banning from online platforms because onl8ne gaming is huge today

    • @ikonix360
      @ikonix360 5 років тому +6

      They were defeated because they didn't cover all the bases well enough plus they prob never dealt with someone so determined before so felt no need to take a more proactive approach and possibly by the time the exploits came out, it was too late to redesign the security to be better given the expense and time that would require.
      Plus it is Microsoft we're dealing with who cut corners so the 360 would be out before the PS3.

    • @ikonix360
      @ikonix360 5 років тому +1

      @@TonyRudzki They could have used ROM chips for the DVD flash chips, but that would make updating the DVD pretty much impossible should the firmware ever have needed to be updated.
      It would have only slowed down the hackers though. Someone would have simply replaced the ROM with another ROM chip that had the necessary firmware on it provided the firmware could have even been known. Testing would have been very hard though.
      The way to stop that is to have Xbox live check the ROM of the DVD drive and ban those where the ROM wasn't exactly as it should be, although that would have given hackers easy access to the ROM to find its contents.

    Those were the days, getting games early at the cost of a blank disc, proud to say I actually flashed multiple 360's so satisfying!

  • @Xenon_VA
    @Xenon_VA 4 роки тому +3

    Here's my experience with 360 flashing when I used to do it back in the day. These apply for the original models:
    - The Lite-On drives were the biggest pain to flash because you needed a special tool to extract the key (The CK3 Probe to be exact). I've never flashed a Slim or an E-model drive, but apparently those require RGH.
    - The Hitachi 46/47s were really easy, and so were the 78/79s but you needed a special disc to be able to extract the key from a 79. And it took the longest for the AP2.5/XGD3-compatible LT+ 3.0 firmware to be released for the 79.
    - Ben-Qs and Samsungs were the easiest of all. Just needed to turn off and turn back on the drive at the right time and you're in Vendor Mode, and you've got your drive key.
    - It's perfectly possible to use different model drives by spoofing, but there's something you do have to consider. If the Xbox 360 originally had a Samsung or a Hitachi drive below 78, then you can use any of those drives. This is because they were not AP2.5 capable. However, if your Xbox 360 has a BenQ, newer Hitachi or a Lite-ON drive, then you must use either one of these because they support the AP2.5 technology. Otherwise, they will not boot XGD3 games.

    +Modern Vintage Gamer
    Really nice video! One thing I missed was more detail on the AP2.5 crack. Filling it in here for anybody interested.
    IIRC (it's been some time) due to the AP2.5 checks being per-console, the previous approach of having the Drive reply with a static response to a challenge from the console was no longer possible (but still done in addition to the AP2.5 checks).
    C4Eva defeated this by effectively letting the drive create the challenge-response on its own. This required so called Topology information to be included in the dumped game (producible via also updated 0800 firmware and only extractible on LiteOn drives IIRC). That TP is then used by the iXtreme LT firmware to calculate the appropriate response.
    Also noteworthy: Hitachi, Samsung and Benq drives did not support the Check, so if your Console was originally shipped with one, you did not need to care about AP2.5.

    I love how years later I see this quote, about it being able to play "illegally" copied games, and the majority of the reason for DVD firmware hacking was to be able to play our own backups, because the xbox 360 games disks were known to be junk, and the drives were notorious for wrecking disks. The dvd firmware hack did eventually make it to market when someone else figured it out, and it was not to hard to implement, and the console could never be aware.
