Yooo my name is Nadia too and it's not a super common name so when I hear said by strangers it catches me off guard 🤣🤣 have enjoyed j Cole's music for over a decade now, engaged since I was introduced and it's really great to see others be hooked in the first listen. He is an insightful and grounded multifaceted musical artist and has a fantastic and expansive catalog, I personally enjoy jamari, nothing lasts forever, i95 and his verse on bas' Lit but the list could go on. Being mixed too his music has always spoken deeply to me
What a lovely family, really appreciate seeing the dynamics. The father has a lot of great commentary and wisdom in these videos and it's great to see modern music evoke this emotion.

Chronological order of how the story goes 4 your eyez only.
For Whom the Bell Tolls - James (Cole’s friend from the Ville that was renamed to protect his identity) is good at heart and doesn’t want to be a criminal. He wants something to change but the only place he can turn to is crime. He prays to the lord as he sees the storm coming, and knows he’s running out of options.
Neighbours - Two options here: James starts to partake in illegal activities (selling dope) early in his life and is charged with 2 felonies, or setting up the rampant racism that follows people no matter how big they make it. Know this song is about the police raiding Cole’s crib in real life but it can apply to James falling into the trap the system set for him. The arrogance shown (‘mother fucker, I am”) goes away after being caught and he’s humbled a bit but feels empty. This song is like the “Wake Me Up When September Ends” of this album. It’s a great song and sonically fits but has very little to do with the narrative unless you make tenuous links.
Deja Vu - James finding the love of his dreams and believing he found destiny. He wants it more than anything but she’s taken.
She’s Mine part 1 - James fulfils what he thinks is his destiny and starts a relationship with the love of his life. He’s found the woman he loves and that she loves him back. He began to feel that void in his life being filled. In KOD, Cole even talks about how people who lack love feel the need to self medicate. James now has love.
Ville Mentality - James is wondering if he can go on as a criminal now that he has someone he loves so much. He wants to live a long life with her and knows that can’t happen if he continues the life of crime. Like I mentioned, Cole believes self medication comes from a lack of love shown to addicts starting from a young age. James filled that hole by falling into the trap the crooked system set for him but pulls himself out of it by falling in love with a female human.
Folding Clothes - James is abandoning the gangster lifestyle to be with his girl. Finding that life pre-For Whom the Bell Tolls is a lot better when you have someone that you love with you going through it together.
She’s Mine part 2 - James is having his child, Nina, and learning what the unconditional love of fatherhood feels like. His heart is filling up and he’s feeling more love than he’s ever felt before.
Change - James begins to spread word that change can happen in the black community internally. There is a lot of external forces causing blacks to be suppressed but there’s also a lot of internal issues. But James gets caught in the crossfire and dies from what he was trying to change.
Immortal - Cole remembering James. The eulogy from the end of Change leads itself into this really well. This is the biggest change. This song makes no sense being number 2 on the original track listing. This is obviously Cole mourning James, but when it’s at 2, no one even knows what the album is about yet, now that we’ve heard what happened to James, we can see why Cole sounds like he’s holding back tears and the song becomes much more emotional.

4 Your Eyez Only is the fourth studio album by J. Cole. The album unexpectedly made it to iTunes for pre-order on December 1, 2016. The project would be officially released December 9, 2016-the two-year anniversary of the release of Cole’s multi-platinum album 2014 Forest Hills Drive.
The album’s title references the classic rap album All Eyez On Me by 2Pac. Both albums mark each respective artists' fourth studio album.
The album tells the story of Cole’s slain friend given the pseudonym James McMillian Jr, as he goes from selling crack, to falling in love and starting a family. Following James' death on “Change,” the titular final track reveals that almost the entire album is a tape made by James to tell his story to his daughter after he’s gone.
On January 11, 2017, 4YEO was certified Gold by RIAA. On April 7, 2017, the album was officially certified platinum-for the second time with no credited features. A beautifully structured fatherhood tale which through the first person narrative attempts to capture untameable feelings of love and selflessness. Cole tames these feelings through addressing ongoing social struggles throughout all songs, which also is one of the frequently mentioned issues in the album.
