Excellent stuff! I much prefer this afro photography dude to that _other_ afro photography dude. Here is how to do a review that is informative while being refreshingly lacking in ego and self importance.
The reason to take off stabilisation is when you you want the sharpest photo quality, say doing portraits with really fast lens under say2.0 , your plane of focus is extremely thin and you just need that eye in sharp focus, so any movement could cause blur, or even sharp landscapes at small fstops so even though you assume turning on IS would be the correct thing to do it's not because for IS to work all your lens elements have to move around, so as the other to comments below suggested, yes, put camera on tripod, then turn off IS on your lens. ..and now for the extra couple of secrets. .set camera to mirror lockup and put camera on self timer of acouple of seconds so you don't have to touch it at all...and voila! , super sharp image! Test it for your self's and you should see the difference in sharpness when you zoom into your photo on your monitor. ..but, yeas, when your just walking around taking photo's and video's handheld that's what IS for...
You said ''who in their right mind would turn of stabilization'' If your using a tripod, mono pod or a Steadicam for video its just wasting battery life and there's no point in having it turned on. So that is why there is a switch.
Some articles around the internet recommend you to turn off IS if your camera is mounted in a tripod. Because the IS system may detect its own vibration. These vibrations are picked up and amplified by a tripod, creating a potentially damaging "feedback loop". It is what they say, it seems reasonable. Thanks for you video. It helped.
I got the Canon 70D with this 18-135mm STM lens. I like it more than 18-55mm lens because it has the same picture quality, but offer more range than the 18-55mm. This lens with Canon 70D is also the perfect combo for video, because they offer fast and absolute silent focus of your subject. Image stabilization is very helpful at higher range shots. I wish my Canon EF 50mm had the image stabilization.
I just started using this lens with a SONY a6000 using a Fotodiox Pro EF-NEX adaptor. Perfect. A similar SONY lens costs a fortune. The photo quality is great and the lens is quite versatile. I still use the lens with my Canon t4i which is one of the cameras it was designed for.
It is a good buy if you are looking for a wider range zoom and a quieter focus. I came from the 18-55mm kit to the 18-135 STM. It is worth it in my opinion.
I would recommend going for the 18-135. You won't have to switch lenses in order to access a longer zoom and it is much easier to have one lens than two when traveling.
Clicked on this video simply because I have the lens but watching this and playing "David Gates' Lorelee HD" at the same time is just awesome......You'd have to play the song file twice, though....
Great idea and way to learn,..also i hope you actually do get a 70D for Cristmas and hope you really like IT, ..the prices have really come down on it making it a lot easier choice :-) Good luck have fun and be safe,
Great presentation. Two minor questions: 1: What is the total zoom with the lens completely extended? 2: Can it be used with that Canon T2i? You answered YES on the T3i. Any limitations on the T2i body? Thanks in advance, Jack H.
***** The total zoom of the lens is 135mm. It will work with the Canon T2i but like the Canon T3i, it will not be able to take advantage of the STM motor.
The T2i was sold. Buying a T5i. Now I can use the STM capabilities. My question is, what is the zoom in a 135 mm lens, 4x, 5x, 6x etc. I know the lens goes to a max of 135mm.
Newest 18-55 STM has the same focus by wire system where the ring doesn't actually move anything directly. The older 18-55 which didn't really even have a focus ring, you just grabbed the end of the lens and twisted. The new one is silent, way faster and optically gives better image quality as far as I can tell.
great review..thanks. I have a question to ask that I have 55-250 mm kit lens. Will it be wise and helpful if I buy tamron 70-300 mm? Will the extra focal length really give any extra advantage? I have canon 1200D..thanks
I couldn't see going from 250mm to 300mm making much of a difference. I own a 70-300mm lens from Sigma and I hardly use it on the go when I have my 18-135mm Canon. It can be useful for some situations (Primarily sports and nature) but for general purpose shooting, I wouldn't see much of a difference between a 250mm and a 300mm.
DragonRiderNetwork thanks a lot...I was wondering which lens would be better for general purpose like portrait, street photography, landscape etc 1) 15-85 mm IS USM or 2) 18-135 mm IS STM. Could you please suggest any one of them?
I take of stabilization all the time. When you have IS on your lens is constantly shaking trying to counteract any type of movement you do. So when you have your camera on a tripod and you aren't moving it at all. The lens is still doing it with is on. Resulting in less sharp images compared to not having IS on. You should never have your IS on when you are on a tripod.
My main problem with this lens is the horrible chromatic aberration in any trees. In Lightroom after clicking "remove chromatic aberration" I still have to remove all purple from the picture manually. However I still use it all the time for it's wide zoom range when I'm not sure what I'm going to encounter on a trip.
I've got a question! I have been taking pictures on my phone of my little cousin, I've never taken any photography classes I recently got a canon t5 for Christmas & I'm learning fast! my gmaw says I'm ready for the 18-135 but my gpaw said different, what should I do?
I did use my Canon Rebel T3i and the lens I used for this video was my 50mm f1.8 Prime Lens. My personal favorite for shooting videos for the channel :)
Nice review man!!! Just a question...i'm getting a new eos 70d, and my father just has a 18-55, so I wanna buy a different lens, to have another lens in the house to share with my dad..do you think 18-135 + eos 70 d is a good team? :) from italy! thanks!
DragonRiderNetwork- you sold me this lens! I've been looking for an all-around lens for video work on my 70D and think I'll get this one. I have 40mm STM already, nice and smooth focus, but no IS, so this hopefully will be better :)
There is atleast one reason for putting off for stabilization. when you are on a tripod the camera could think of some internal movements in the camera as your hand shaking and will lead for opposite effect
***** Ah, sorry I misspoke. What camera are you using? It's my understanding that the series of cameras that I use (Canon EOS 650D, T4i) may exhibit CMOS aberrations like rolling shutter in certain shots. Thanks for the info!
It's recommended to turn off the IS when the camera is on a tripod and this is why there's a switch to turn it off. With the IS active on a tripod the images will blur because it's attempting to stabilize a stable image.
Loved the video - very honest and extremely informative. Just one silly comment though - 1.3 feet is nowhere near 3.9 meters! Just thought I'd be a pain and point that out!
Which package should i choose the 650d with 18-55mm with 55-250mm or the 650d with18-135mm the price is almost the same. I don't know which one i choose as a beginner
Ivan Soto Because it is already stabilized by the tripod. If you don't turn it off, the camera assumes that there are still vibration and shaking and you risk creating what’s called a feedback loop, in which the camera’s IS system essentially detects its own vibrations and starts moving around, even when the rest of the camera is completely still. This introduces motion objects to your camera system and brings with it blurriness. This is one of the key reasons to turn off image stabilization.
Thanks a lot for this Review! Really helpful. Only 1 remark on my side (not sure if already said), but IS should be turned OFF for long exposure pics (those on top of several seconds). Hence, that ON-OFF button makes full sense to me...;)) Thanks again
+Taylor Sawyer What Camera Blondy? =he's reviewing a Lens Not a Camera, :- ..So is he Taking this Video with Lens ONLY?..Sure..its a Magical Lens :- gets Kisses for Great Answer, ;-)
I really wouldn't recommend going out and buying this lens separate from your camera. If you buy the package (camera plus this lens), it's a pretty good deal, but going out and purchasing this lens for $500? There are SO many lenses that are soooo much better optically, for that price range, whether it's for video or photos. For that price, you could get a 50 and a 35 or a 35 and 85 or even a decent macro like the Tokina 100mm (if you're into macro).
Will this lens work on a Canon T3i?? Love your video, it's nice to hear from someone who I can actually understand what they're saying instead of all the technical stuff. Thanks, Brenda in Ga.
+shahid cheyu It is there because you get better results with the stabilizer turned off when shooting moving objects with panning technique or using the camera on a tripod.
Khaled Al Khder I would think so. This was the 600D so I would think with a camera that could take advantage of the STM mode it would work just as well, if not better.
It depends on your needs. I would recommend the 18-135 if you are looking for just casual shooting for almost any situation. I would recommend the 75-300 plus the 50mm 1.8 in situations that required a telephoto and a prime lens.
Excellent stuff! I much prefer this afro photography dude to that _other_ afro photography dude. Here is how to do a review that is informative while being refreshingly lacking in ego and self importance.
This is one of my new favorite comments on any of my videos! Thank you!
Exactly the same thoughts!!!
So who is that "other" afro photography dude? :)
Lol I know who you're talking about cause I've been watching a bunch of videos on the new camera I got.
Thanks, this helped a lot. It might be worth an annotation at 1:50 though that 1.3 ft are 39 cm or 0.39 m, not 3.9 m. This is a huge difference! :)
Just added the annotation. Thanks for your feedback!
I didn't know John Snow was a part-time photographer too apart from his full-time job at The Wall.
You said ''who in their right mind would turn of stabilization''

Nice review bro, thats what most reviews lack of 'the video' aspect. Thanks
Glad you liked it
Clicked on this video simply because I have the lens but watching this and playing "David Gates' Lorelee HD" at the same time is just awesome......You'd have to play the song file twice, though....
if you are buying your 1st dslr dont even bother with 18-55... buy it straight in kit with 18-135.. it`s much better
Yep! Buying the 700D 18-135 kit babaayy!
+Vortex Hunter 700D? Or 70D?
+chevypowertogo I brought the 700D to get used to the camera and know the functions, but currently planning to buy the 70D this Christmas. :D

chevypowertogo Thanks man! :D I'm not far away from it :P Getting my salary soon this week and straight to Cannon Shop! Hahaha Cheers!
Cool I bought the 750D 18-135mm kit

Forget about 18-135. Which lens do you used while taking this video 😁😁😁?
Great video :)
Could you tell me how long it took for the autofocus to find it's subject in live view mode tho?
4:46 Mistake .. 18mm or below

Hi! I think it would definitely be a great combination. Both are incredible for video in m opinion. Thanks for watching!
great video man. im definitely getting this lens.
Awesome! Glad you enjoyed the video!
I literally laughed out loud at your comment! It is now my new favorite comment on any of my videos! Congratulations!

Hi! Wich microphone are you using? Thakns
There is atleast one reason for putting off for stabilization. when you are on a tripod the camera could think of some internal movements in the camera as your hand shaking and will lead for opposite effect
When you're stabilizing video footage with this lens are you adjusting for rolling shutter at all?
Absolutely not; rolling shutter is a CMOS sensor typical issue, it idoes not inherit lenses.
***** Ah, sorry I misspoke. What camera are you using? It's my understanding that the series of cameras that I use (Canon EOS 650D, T4i) may exhibit CMOS aberrations like rolling shutter in certain shots. Thanks for the info!

Thank you! Nice, clear, informative and funny! Inspirated for some practice! ))
how does the 18-135 STM compare to the 18-55 STM?
Which package should i choose the 650d with 18-55mm with 55-250mm or the 650d with18-135mm the price is almost the same. I don't know which one i choose as a beginner
If you're shooting photography on a tripod you don't want IS on. That's why it's on a switch.
you turn OFF the stabilization when its on tripod ot steadycam!
Will 18-135 suits rebel t7(1500D)??
When you use tripod, you must turn off stablizer.
WipeOutCCP why?
Ivan Soto Because it is already stabilized by the tripod. If you don't turn it off, the camera assumes that there are still vibration and shaking and you risk creating what’s called a feedback loop, in which the camera’s IS system essentially detects its own vibrations and starts moving around, even when the rest of the camera is completely still. This introduces motion objects to your camera system and brings with it blurriness. This is one of the key reasons to turn off image stabilization.
+WipeOutCCP Also IS uses some power, if you don't need it your just wasting battery for nothing.

Does this video is shot with the lens?
the stabilization makes a slight clicking noise, so while recording w/o an external mic, this could be annoying
+Carly Dobie and No One knows better then the CAT :-)
did you take this video with this canon camera?
+Taylor Sawyer What Camera Blondy? =he's reviewing a Lens Not a Camera, :- ..So is he Taking this Video with Lens ONLY?..Sure..its a Magical Lens :- gets Kisses for Great Answer, ;-)
Wow. Look at that hair.... You could go super saiyan at any time. That'd be a cool video project for Final Cut Pro.
Great review dude~~ it really it~~ thx. You make me to decide alot easier~ dude
What kind of lens did you use to record this video with?
Thanks for the review.
+Micheall Myrie No problem :)
i'm turning off the stabilation lens when im in studio shot/strobist & when im doing lanscape photography(on tripod).
Thank god for youtube and internet.
Many amateur reviewers can be better than professional reviews ;)
+free lance I TOTALLY AGREE 110% & If Your Well behaved during the Video,..Afterwards you could be Awarded with FRIED CHICKEN & FREE BALLOONS :-
Can you briefly discuss how you recorded audio in this video?
I used a boom stand with my Audio-Technica microphone I use for most of my videos.
Hi! Which microphone are you using? Thanks
IS uses battery when switched on, so there you go, why someone would want to switch off IS. So you're a photographer and you didn't know that?
Hello ,
Thx for the review.
Does this lens have Face detection like the stm version
This lens is the STM version.
What camera did you use for pictures and video taken with the 18-135 sorry if you already said it in the video
Hello Dear, I want to upgrade my 18-55mm kit to 18-135mm is this fine to buy this lens. Please suggest me.
Stabilization off enables you to makes sharper photos when shooting from a tripod.
I really wouldn't recommend going out and buying this lens separate from your camera. Ashton Taylor Yes. This will work with the Canon T3i.
you're absolutely right, why it has a
Stabilization button anyway ???????
great review , keep up . do more reviews !!!
You have to disable the IS for example when you put your camera on a tripod.
Good review! Thanks.
does the canon eos 600d work with the 18-135mm is stm?
hey man, I think you mixed up the units for the ft and m. the value of meter should have been smaller that ft. since 1m = 3.28ft
When you use a tripod its better to turn off is ;)
Which camera and lens you used in this video for shooting? Will be glad to know that! thanks :)
I used my Canon 50mm f1.8 lens for the video.
Yes.
Thanks man and this was a great video too
The slow focusing in live-view has everything to do with your camera body and nothing to do with the lens. Nice review though!
I like tht u mention about stabilizer switch bro, seriously why is tht swith there?
What do you mean?
+shahid cheyu It is there because you get better results with the stabilizer turned off when shooting moving objects with panning technique or using the camera on a tripod.
i know right. who on earth wouldn't want stabilizer ? there shouldn't be a switch for that lol
Great Review! Cool dude.
nice review and i liked and subbed
It's good with canon 700d ?
Khaled Al Khder I would think so. This was the 600D so I would think with a camera that could take advantage of the STM mode it would work just as well, if not better.
yea, it works great
Je viens de le commander sur amazone
And that is why I am a noob in photography... Haha
I used a Canon 50mm f1.8 Prime Lens.
how i ativate the macro in that lens?
You need to zoom in on the lens and then you will be able to use the macro focus.
You turn off IS when you put your camera on a tripod so no false positive movement.
I think u meant .39 meters. Not 3.9
Hahaaa!! Thanks. I'm subscribed now so I don't miss any saiyan videos.
Photographerses... lol
18-135 or
75-300 III usm and 50mm 1.8
It depends on your needs. I would recommend the 18-135 if you are looking for just casual shooting for almost any situation. I would recommend the 75-300 plus the 50mm 1.8 in situations that required a telephoto and a prime lens.
zo'n beetje alle lenzen van canon werken op een 600d en nog veel meer andere merk lenzen
Excellent..
IS should be turned off when on a tripod.
Thanks
you turn off the IS when using on a tripod ;)
