No joke this is how I fall asleep lately watching rock hound videos and tumbling videos,. I'm waiting on a biopsy to come back and waiting over two weeks for the results is very stressful. Very relaxing ❤

Never clicked on a video so fast! I am obsessed with Nephrite Jade. I found some of my own a few hours from where I live in California. Also a big fan of the show Jade Fever so I nerded out hard while watching this. lol. Dan, thank you for going into detail on your methods for Jade hunting. As well as showing them cut and the side by side comparison of Jade vs not Jade. It can be really confusing sometimes when you are still learning. I have been hoping you would do a video on Jade at some point. So glad you did! Thank you!
A lot of people think you can only find it in and around Big Sur in California. I did for a long time too. I guess bigger pieces would more typically be found there, but for pebble-sized, or the size of a quarter to 50 cent piece it can be found much further south. The ocean current is one powerful force and I'm pretty sure I've found jade at Morro Bay, Montana de Oro, Cambria, etc. -- all of the towns through there have it at the beaches. Hard to spot, but super fun to find. So many cool things to find on California beaches. Agates, jasper, volcanic rock, moonstone, jade, petrified wood, sea glass, abalone shells, sand dollars, etc. I guess you could find sharks teeth, but they're very rare through there if at all.
@@tomw.4255 Yes! I have found all of those except shark teeth. I plan of taking a trip to Florida in the future to hunt for teeth. I feel really blessed to live where I do though. So many treasures to find here.
Hi, just happened to come by your video through UA-cam algorithm. I live in eastern Taiwan and we can find jade, black jade, and (lots of) serpentine in the creeks here, just not as big because they were rolled down from the mountains. Taiwan used to be the no.1 export country of jades in the 70s and 80s, but large scale harvest no longer exist since the price dropped significantly and it’s much cheaper to harvest in Russia.
Thanks Dan for this one I was lucky to find two baseball size chunks of Jade while gold prospecting glacial drift in Ohio. According to the head guy over that claim he said to his knowledge that was the first and only Jade ever found there. Sure made my day and my best finds to date out digging and poking around.
@@canadiangemstones7636 well it's been authenticated maybe you need to learn more about glacial till. They was also a diamond found in the same area I got the jade. The material isn't native to Ohio is was pushed by glaciers out of Canada and dropped in different spots through out northern half of Ohio.
I have a huge green somewhat translucent boulder and some other matching rocks the previous owners of my house had collected. I believe they might be Jade, but I’ll have to use that ping and scratch test to really find out.

Jade is one of those where I know what to look for, but then some days it's like someone flipped the switch off and I don't know what it looks like again. 😂 This was excellently explained, going to save this for when I need a refresher.
A couple months out of open-heart and you're out rock-hounding with the wife on a sunny day, on that beautiful river .... my hat's off to you, sir!! 😅 I was also a slow healer, and just getting up the river bank would have been a minor miracle - not including the trek to/from the truck, mosquitos/biting flies/gnats AND a backpack full of rocks .... amazing job, my friend. I can't think of many sounds more soothing to refresh body & soul than that river. As always, you do such a good job of teaching as you explore. I have a teenage daughter who's drawn to geology, especially looking for/identifying minerals & crystals. University is a ways off yet, but whether or not this love of exploration results in a career choice or not, you've shown how the wonders of discovering the world around us and educating yourself to enable you to dig even deeper, doesn't have to be a profession to enrich your life. We live in beautiful Atlantic Canada, so the formations here are quite tame and weathered down. We send your videos back and forth and appreciate the positivity you show of doing something you enjoy, in an environment you love all while educating us with the experiences you share (good, bad AND ugly!). I used to be a surveyor so would chuckle at walking sticks but I have a real bad back now and that is exactly the perfect terrain for a walking stick, really helps to stabilize saving lots of extra physical effort, make carrying a load out easier too. Your wife is great! You aren't so bad yourself either. Just found your channel yesterday and have seen several videos, getting totally hooked.

That rock that you didn't know is a Basalt Porphyry. We have it on Van. Is. I've always known it as Snowflake Porphyry and is also called Flower Porphyry. It has great eye appeal when slabbed.

Almost 50 years ago I was exploring streams in the “mountains” of Alabama. I came across a, area of concentrated green rocks. I was certain I had found a pocket of jade (and had no idea that jade in Alabama was extremely unlikely). Carried out two 5gallon buckets of this “treasure” and took them home to my college roommate who was a geology major. He took it to a professor who rendered a learned determination as to the “value” of my “treasure”. “Industrial slag” he said. “Worthless”.😟 Glad YOU are finding the real thing!

On closer examination and a little research I became a little LESS naive and realized he was correct. It was truly a glass-like slag. My youthful naïveté made me want very much for it to be at LEAST semi-precious, if not wildly valuable. In a way this growth proved valuable to me later in life when I took up gold prospecting. The “jade” experience probably kept me from lugging large quantities of mica around trying to believe it was gold…

That green rock with the white “stars” was a type of nephrite. It is actually quite rare and makes gorgeous cabochons.
