I totally understand having a mental block. I blew up my knee snowboarding... actually, I was just getting off the lift but had new bindings. I made it down, but never went again. I do manual labor for a living (trying to get out of it, but it pays so much better than anything else I can find), and I can't justify the risk any more.
I really miss powder days and snow ghosts, but not bad enough to break my body for a little fun.
I love these POV kayaking videos. Think of all the people out there who can't go whitewater kayaking... you are giving them the chance to experience the thrill. I think this is a big part of the future of videography.

I feel your pain! I broke my back loading a 4 wheeler in the back of truck the ramp kicked out and I landed on the ground and the 4 wheeler landed on me I've never fully recovered mornings are the worst when getting up and then certain limitations thruout the day! I'm glad you were able to get back on the horse and do it again your very inspirational.

  • @mikegupguthrie-futurenomad7866

I feel your back pains bro! Car accident in ‘89, compression fracture of L4, L4 & L5 fused together and 2 rods from L1-L5. Couldn’t ski for two years, then went for it all ‘91 and moved to Steamboat Springs, CO and ski bummed 100+ days a year for 13 years until my knees said no mas!
Loving you vids man, makes me miss CO and can’t wait to hit the road full time. Stay safe out there….

You're brave leaving that brand new boat unlocked while setting shuttle. Maybe use the one wheel lock to lock the boat so you don't keep forgetting it?

Loved my Karma and the Nirvana was cool but not I found myself wishing for a baby from the two and that absolutely looks like it. I will have to demo one this spring. Awesome to see another boater walk rapids, it's amazing how much pride/ego some of these new boaters have and run shit over their heads and won't walk. I guess 30 years of it gives me a different perspective. Great video, and I know your back pain well, I crushed. L2,3,4 in a cliff drop on my snowboard, basically went 50' to flat landing in my buddies bomb hole, thought I was dead for a bit and like you, luck to not be paralyzed but that did end my days of big hucks.

Thank God you are still with us!!
Your friend is for sure with you brother, they live with us in our hearts and sharing our memories of them keep them with us.
I lost a best friend to a self inflicted headshot due to alcohol and drugs taking a huge effect on his mental stability.
This life can take a toll on someone when it seems like no one truly cares, and we are forced to pay the government to exist comfortably.

Sounds like you had quite the accident there. Great to hear that you're again able to paddle, though.
I'm sorry to hear that you lost a paddling buddy on the river. One of my best friends died paddling Great Falls of the Potomac, 24 years ago. Still think about him, and how he would enjoy paddling some of the things I run now. It's great to meet someone like that, and it leaves a hole in your heart when they pass away, especially when they still have a whole life ahead of them.
As for the Gnarvana, when are you two getting married? ;-) Sounds like you're totally in love with that boat!

Well...I can see a big difference in the Jackson vs Salto vids, so much faster down the line and dryer. I will be probably the last Salto dude left which reflects my age I guess. Glad we could finally see it in action and get a good review...ugly yes...but I think everyone agrees it is the 2023 creek boat to have...what do I know...I have a Salto. The photo says it all...look at that rocker!

Hey timmy, I think the kayaking content is super cool. I've only even gone casual kayaking on lakes and rivers. I'd love to see a video on getting into white water kayaking for complete beginners. What would be the best way to get into it?

The Gnarvana should have came with the Bees Knees - velcro adjustable attachment for better connectivity of the thigh hooks. That'll solve your complaint of the "wrap around" issue of the thigh hooks.

Not a kayaker, but it seems your new boat naturally wants to point downstream compared to the others? Just an observation. Great videos, I've driven by that section so many times, neat to see it from the river.

and your seem to have got rid of mental block for kayaking if you are straight into solo runs in a new boat in fairly remote water.

I would think that your own injuries and the death of your friend would give you considerable pause about paddling any river alone. Clearly you are a skilled paddler and the water level at which you paddled Royal Gorge was barely class III. Bailey Canyon is a whole other matter. That was strong class III and solid IV in some areas. Good on you for walking Super Max. But few people should ever paddle whitewater rivers alone. The potential consequences of an accident are far too extreme even when the CHANCES of an accident seem remote. Far better to hang around a put in and hook up with another party about to do the same run.
