Floating Cities of Scum

- Pond scum is kind of a rude name, isn’t it? It feels kind of appropriate when you’re wading through murky waters, and you might not be able to see it, but you sure can feel it-whether or not you want to.

My family scooped the floating algae off the pond with a rake and spread it on the vegetable garden paths to dry out and smother any weeds (grass clippings went on the paths too). Eventually it got tilled into the soil to break down as compost.

Making a stand against necropolitics and extinction, I guess.
Wowee. I'm gay btw.
@@StopItGarrison what is something else about you? Sure hope it’s not gross!

I was just typing "sometimes I wish I lived in pond scum", then I got to the part about being poisoned and suffocated by algae.
Since pond scum is algae threads, I wonder if they have any textile or artistic uses. I wonder if it could be dried, worked, and formed into a spool. Or maybe the scum could be made into bricks for building mats for virtually anything. Hmm..
I dont know about in america but in the UK scum is STILL used commonly to describe the nasty froth you will get when boiling certain foods that you need to scoop off as you go.
And also sometimes for stuff floating on water in like ponds. Not man made stuff but like bio-films/froth.
The most common thing I can think of that needs that is pasta, and over here we would probably use the word foam for the starchy bubbly mess
@@redofthewolvesalso when you’re boiling broth with a marrow bone, or even just meat, scum will form on top.
@@kellydalstok8900 Thats the main one im familiar with- boiling certain meats like when making stew etc
That explains why I've always also thought of it as meaning icky froth..... Scum scoops and all that.
USian here. I'm definitely used to those usages.
I always wondered how the term 'scumbag' came to be... Who was collecting bags of scum?
But it's clear to me now it must have been a biologist with a new microscope.
@@brianbisconer863 that’s hilarious, I gotta start saying scumbag now

i really really love these videos. especially how much care seems to go into the audio. the generative modular patches from audrew huang combined with the subtle reverb on the voiceover really contributes to the amazing vibe. Especially the music; its subtle textures make it sound like i've actually been shrunk down to the scale of the microcosms.
Reminds me of Spore.

I think it’s a tad too echoey on this voiceover, but otherwise true
Sarah, Your narreration is amazing!
So much eye candy in this video. Who knew scum could be so beautiful ❤
It's great to hear Sarah as narrator on this video. Perfect voice for science video narration.
Great video, thanks so much!

@@brianbisconer863Brian, you absolute child, Hank is recovering from cancer treatment and doesn’t owe you a damned thing. How staggeringly selfish.
I feel like there's another part of the story that is missing. Why do the floating mats eventually die off on their own when they seemingly have everything they need at the surface, plenty of sunlight and gases, so why aren't there permanent algal mats covering lakes and oceans?
"... anything could be there." Ron DeSantis' face emerges from the muck.
This summer in my city many trees are dying due to a lack of water. There is a class one watering ban on ATM due to the drought so the trees can't be watered, so as a result many public trees are dead and dying. We have 2 local ponds with a lot of water in them but I have heard that we can't use this water due to algae toxins that caused the trees to die. Any Suggestions?
Thanks a lot Microcosmos you rock!
I want this woman to describe micro world creatures as if she is describing them as a horror story.

look, everything is edible once, ok?
when you said "people like you..." I was like alright PBS
I think Sarah Suta is an excellent presenter. Her low, well modulated, voice is almost hypnotic.
i agree~
i guess i have different ears, i find her voice to strong, to hard, to much german like.
I love these video, their biological informations and their scientific and philosophical considerations. Good job! ❤
Awesome!!!❤❤💯💯
Amazing Video! :) 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 ❤❤ 💖💖
Best microbiology videos😊
If we humans try taking the balance of the world into our hands, we must also take the responsibility for using wisdom to guide our decisions. And whatever the outcome, intended or not, is our responsibility.
1:33 OHH! It's still that meaning in Swedish. I learned some new history today
Was that Nostoc in the background (left of Spyrogyra) with its nitrogen fixing cells @3:45 and again @ 7:45 to the right this time?
So scumbag just means a bag full of green algae.
50 yrs old & still cursing my attention span! I find myself so engaged w the photo bombing zooplankton I forget to listen to the narrator. 🤔
Shaving Foam is called Rasierschaum is German. It literally means Razor Scum.
Schaum=foam?
Also, razor would be 'rasierer'. 'Rasier' comes from the verb 'rasieren', i.e. to shave
Sorry to correct you "Schaum" is mostly translated with "foam" . I am not sure though if the neutral word "scum" has a literal translation in German. At least I can't think of one that is not dialect. In Austrian German we call it "Gatsch" or nicer "Schäumchen, I guess you could say that" Schaum" could be "foam" or " scum" depending on the meaning, so maybe you are half right...
translation for "scum" into german would be "Abschaum" so i guess thats where the confusion comes from
The origin of the word is Germanic: schuim in Dutch, skûm in Frisian, Schaum in German all mean froth or foam. Scum is just a particular kind of foam.
The most accurate translation for scum would probably be "Abschaum", which is also a derogatory term.
Btw, don't listen to @paulbennet7021, as Rasierschaum is the literal translation of shaving foam.

I want to be a pond scum scientist 🦠
I'm not getting in any body of water ever again.
Humans have bacteria in their intestines and insects in their eyebrows, there is no escaping from the microcosmos
”Floating city of scum” sound like what a Venice native would call their home city after it got turned into a tourist trap.
Awsome
I love hearing other voices rather than the main guy
I just saw a Bunsen and Beaker video that made me think of your channel.
Bunsen had invented a substance that made microorganisms big enough to study with the naked eye.
I would share it, but it was in the middle of a long binge video of Bunsen and Beaker skits.
So new york basically
Was her voice extra echo-y compared to usually or is it just my headset?
your headset though the music in the background had just a tint of wobble to it as well
*That's* Spirogyra? I thought they were just a British folk rock/prog band.
Actually, timmcdaniel, Spiro Gyra is an American jazz/fusion instrumental band of some renown.
Two bands with the same odd name.
@@stevenkarnisky411 Ah! I thought I'd heard a song by "spirogyra", but decades ago, & when the discography of Spirogyra didn't trigger any memories, I chalked it up to a brain turned to mush. Thank you for Spiro Gyra.
Are are😅😅😅
hmm might be time to clean my pond i think
Thanks🔬🦠💚💜
watching before this video get a robot narration. Please someone tell me how can i turn off the translation in my language!
its in the video settings next to the subtitle stuff I'm pretty sure (feel free to correct me if im wrong)
5:42 Okay True, BUT TO MUCH CAN/IS too much. Then at What?
OK, once again this particular aversion to the female voice is cropping up. Every word was enunciated correctly and clearly.
Get off it, males! Women are as intelligent and can narrate as competently as Hank Green, or any other male. I understood every word on my tablet speakers and without my old man hearing aids!
I think some of Hank’s nerdbro fanbase needs to dip into his DFTBA work with his brother. I think it might do their limited worldview some good.

I've never had a problem with pond muck, but the American pronunciation is just plain wrong, horrible, yuk
Disappointed. I thought from the title this was going to be about Los Angeles.
style of voice+filters made an uncomfortable listening experience
Not sure if nature or the latest republican headline
OK, so you’re saying bother you with this video I am not contributing to the friends that you get from UA-cam. Is that what you’re saying? 0:21
Doesnt like the voice
Please forgive me for sound any sort of negative but I must say something. I have a sound challenge being on the Spectrum and the choice of vocal effect and soundtrack was actually painful to listen to. I understand the desire might have been to have the calming effect Hanks voice oft does but it did not work for me. It was completely counter. I would suggest lowering the gain on your voice, taking all effects off and re-think that soundtrack. It is really painful. Otherwise the commentary and imagery as always is great. Thank you for taking the time to listen to my concern and producing great content. I appreciate you
What happened to my narrator

I’m sure Hank would have loved to have not gotten cancer but, as it is, it seems right to give him a little grace while his life gets back to normal.
