That was a very smart move not climbing up the kelpy rock. That stuff is slick as snot and you'll bust your ass - or your melon - if you aren't used to the area. I am really glad you guys didn't try it. You were just about 30 miles north of my area in Santa Cruz and I sometimes head up that far looking for surf (although usually not north of Ano Nuevo).
I encourage people to eat all the urchins they can find (limit is 40/person/day). Not only is it good for you and tasty ("nutritious & delicious!"), but urchins are voracious kelp eaters and thus destroy the ecosystem. Early in the 20th Century when otters were hunted to extinction in the Monterey Bay, the urchins ate the kelp down to where the Bay was nearly devoid of it and hence had very little sea life in the area. A family colony of otters were found down in Big Sur and some were transported north to the Monterey Bay to form a breeding colony to eat the urchins and keep them in check (otters are thus a foundation species). We now have a few hundred throughout the Bay, the kelp rebounded, and fish and marine mammals returned to the Bay to make it the marvelous abundance of sea life that it is today. You two should have taken a day to visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium down in Monterey to check out one of the best aquariums in the world (it was in "Star Trek: The Voyage Home") and see exhibits of all we have in our fantastic bay with one of the deepest submarine canyons in the world.

Thank you again Eric for your comment! I was reading the limit was unlimited as of May of last year due to what the urchins were doing to the kelp as you mentioned. About climbing up that ridge...I told Hiro don't even try it...there's nothing to hold on to and nothing to step up on either; a very difficult task even for the average person. I have been to that aquarium many years ago and must make a stop one day with Hiro....Thank you for being here :)

@@DiariesofaMasterSushiChef Is it hard to find? Which one is it - the 21 year old one? The normal blended one is easy to find, here in Germany at least. Not sure about the 17 or 21 year old ones
