Thank you so much for sharing your video on figuring out how much backing fabric you'll need for your quilt! This is the easiest to understand video I've seen!
This is the first video I've found that actually explained it a way I could understand! Thank you thank you thank you!!! I've just been buying a bunch and then having some left over or sometimes I'm even short😔 you explained this so well and made it so easy I feel embarrassed I couldn't figure this out! Thank you so much for this video😊
Wow! Helpful information...thanks! I am very new to quilting and the math is always confusing to me. This was very helpful, but I did have to go back and listen twice because I was still confused after my first time. Here is what might have helped me for you to add - only sharing to help you see how little true beginners really know, lol. Might be helpful in future videos. If you could have shown how the kitty design is placed in relationship to the selvage, perpendicular or parallel - this is something I struggled with recently on a quilt I am working on. Your video makes it clear to me now that the pattern runs parallel to the selvage which then makes it easy to just figure the number of widths X the length of the quilt to determine amount of fabric needed. Thank you again for all you do to help us newbies!
Great video! Do you happen to have a video of how you piece your backing? I always get overwhelmed when I have to work with such large amounts of fabric?
Margaret - It might be helpful to include that they need to multiply 113" x 3(sections) = 339" divided by 36" = 9.42 yards (BUY 9 1/2 yards or 10 yards to cover the oops factors). Honestly, I would buy a wide backing!
I would much rather buy extra wide backing! My daughter just had to have this for the backing :)! I thought about that after I uploaded it. I will see if I can somehow add that! Thank you for the recommendation!
Good morning from Australia. Thank you for this video. I am a brand new quilter. If I want to use the backing as part of the binding, how much bigger does my backing need to be , assuming I want a 3” binding? I am hand stitching the entire quilt which is approximately 80”x100” Thank you so much.
Good morning, I was just thinking what do you think about placing the quick tip Tuesdays in a playlist. Let me know your thoughts. This is great step by step thanks for your teaching.
Thank you for a really helpful explanation. As your backing fabric has a lovely pattern of cats would you not need to align the pattern across the 3 widths? In that case you would need to allow additional fabric to ensure continuity.
Hello Margaret! Nice tutorial but I think you could have expended this tutorial just a bit more and here is why I say that. Since you are using a directional patterned fabric as the backing, and you stated you want your kitten to be standing as opposed to on its side, it is safe to assume you will be stitching your 3 panels together as one piece of fabric. With that being said, here is my question which you did not mention in your calculation. Do you feel it is necessary to "match" the pattern repeat (just as in hanging wallpaper hanging) so the backing looks as if it is one solid piece? If matching the repeat pattern, then we would also need to calculate the length of the repeat so we purchase the correct amount, correct? Maybe this is too much information but it would be nice to mention this to your viewers, just in case they might want to match or maybe mention the way around the matchy issue you could also suggest a sashing between the backing panels. Just a suggestion. Thank you so much for this tutorial. I do appreciate your easy explanation for calculating backing for your viewers. Keep posting tutorials for us please & happy quilting!!
That's a great suggestion! This pattern had a great repeat so they lined up very easily and also it's so busy I didn't worry about it. I will keep this in mind for a future video. Thank you for suggesting it!
Well I'm a fairly new quilter but I know I don't want to have seams running vertically. That's good info as far as directional fabric, but I will have to find another video explaining how to measure and cut so I have one horizontal seam.
Margaret, Thank you! I’m a “visual” learner. I come back to this video EVERY time I need to calculate backing. 🤭
WOW YOU DID A AWSOME JOB ON THIS VIDEO. I LIKE THE VISUAL SHEET. THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS VIDEO

Don't be embarrassed! There are times I sit there and have to think about it before I can do it!
I agree. Thanks for making it so clear.
Thanks!! I am a visual learner!!
Perfect explanation
This is very helpful!
Thank you. Very helpful.
I'd never worked with directional fabric, but now I'd consider it. Great video Margaret!
thanks Margaret
Awesome!!! Thank you!! I needed this!!
Thanks Margaret. Very helpful.
Thank you
Thank your...Learning lots from you!
Thank you so much!
Thanks Margaret...great video!
Thanks Deb!

Mary, I tried to add it to the video itself but was not able to so I put it at the top of the show notes. Thanks!!

Why do you divide by 36 instead of 40? ( since the fabric is 40" wide?
@@maryfink8192, 36” in a yard so divide the 339” total by 36 to get how many yards. That would be the bare minimum though.

Great explanation. It would be helpful to some to explain how to measure the repeat in the fabric if they want to match up the design in their seams.
Yes, I would definitely want to match the pattern repeats with fabric like that.

Marilyn, I absolutely will!!! Thank you for this fantastic suggestion!
All Done!! Thank you!
Margaret Leuwen Quilting your welcome. Each one help one. Thanks so much
