    These days we aren't used to being blown away like we were in the days of early Clapton and Hendrix. It's all been done. The shredders are just showing off. Then you see Roy Buchanan and you're knocked sideways. Plain tele, no face pulling, no posing, just pure talent. :)

    • @nosullivan

      I saw him perform in Toronto twice, the second time in a tiny venue a short while before he took his life. "Blown away" is an understatement. He did not need tricks and faces, he knew how good he was. Watch the video of him and Nils Lofgren dwelling to Shotgun, Nils looked kind of cocky, but knew by the end he'd been playing in front of a master. RIP. 😀

    Should do a movie about Roy Buchanan. Fascinating, puzzling, riveting life story with a strange ending. Scenes like this, watch a great player with a garage band playing for a few bucks is simply amazing, sad, and asks the question - WHY? Roy's life begs for a movie.

      It was well known Roy liked his alcohol. Roy reminds me of Rory Gallagher in the sense that neither were interested in the trappings of fame. I respect that they forged their reputation and legacies on their terms. RIP to both

    Someone said to Roy, "You are the best. Roy replied that no one is the best. But Roy was making wa wa sounds years before a wa wa was invented. He was playing incredibly well in the 50s. I saw him at least 15 times. To me, he was one of the best ever. He would show up and plug into a small amp that was on a folding chair. Then, they would put a microphone in front of the amp . That was it. Then he would play his ass off. R I P Roy.

    Roy is one of the greatest! He was the pioneer of the Telecaster sound, everyone else just followed him and the sound. Sad he didn't get more recognition, I was onto him in the 60's and no one during that time could come close to his playing.

    I saw Roy play once in a little theatre in Bethlehem PA in the 70s when I was in high school. We were waiting in the parking lot before the show, and a station wagon with Virginia plates pulled up next to my car. It was Roy and his family! Kids tumbled out of the car, McDonalds wrappers all around the seats, and Roy went to the back of the car and lifted out his guitar case. I jumped out and ran over to him and shook his hand! And the show that night? Awesome!

      Richard Radcliffe Hey Richard---another Richard Radcliffe here!I was a long way from home in '73---saw him in Birmingham, England at a magnificent opera house. Strange setting for his music, but the building acoustics were very good. It cost 50p (about a dollar) to see him----what a night! My girlfriend hadn't heard of him; I think she was impressed.I wish he was still with us.

    • @iain399
      @iain399 9 років тому +19

      I think he never wanted to - he wasn't interested in fame or big money. I think he even gave up playing for some years so he could raise a family. I saw him in 1974 or 75 and it seemed to me he was a much more exciting player than Santana and Clapton, who both played Toronto that same year, but he seemed content to just amble along, plug in, play like the blazes, get paid, and go home!

    • @MrJONNYMAN01

      iain399 I have seen both Clapton and Santana live, in all honesty I found Clapton boring like he was going through the motions, it was like sitting through a classroom lesson and Santana plays with such ease it seems like little effort. I still feel very privileged to have seen these artists, but I was a Jimi fan and never got to see him sadly.

      John Lang That's because Clapton's done it all thousands of times. Check out, for instance, him playing "Forty Four" with Wynton Marsalis a few years back. His solo is brilliant and you can tell he's totally consumed by the music at that moment.

    • @richardradcliffe5567
      @richardradcliffe5567 9 років тому +5

      iain399 No, Roy Buchanon wasn't interested in stardom. He turned down the gig with the Rolling Stones when Mick Taylor came in. He couldn't see learning all those new songs, and leading that rock'n'roll lifestyle. But still, it's a shame what happened to him.

      No he isnt thats the thing. Because to get on that list you have to be part of the rock and roll history. The people who put that list together ALWAYS have the same top 3 it NEVER CHANGES.
      HENDRIX
      CLAPTON
      PAGE
      You can bet your life they will ALWAYS be the top 3. Roys not even in the top 100. And thats CRIMINAL. He could play better than anyone in that list. But because he was quite an unassuming charactor. And didnt write major rock anthems. He will never ever get his due for his talent.

    I have to laugh... WTF?Roy playing a Pop song. Don't get me wrong. Sunshine of Your Love was a monsterhit. I saw Cream live in the late sixtes and they were great.But Roy Buchanan could have not got into this radio tune. Don't know why he did.Still, I love the guy and miss his guitar playing. RIP. You too Danny.

      Don Steiner gotta love someone poking fun at him playing a hit blues based rock n roll song while all the other comments are about him being a relatively unknown musician to mainstream radio audiences.

      I once was listening to the radio and the DJ announced he was giving away tickets to a rock concert in Atlanta to the first caller who could tell him correctly the famous band that Paul McCartney played in. Every caller dialed in and said WINGS! I almost died and realized how musically illiterate we Americans are.

    • @mrJimCharles
      @mrJimCharles 7 років тому +1

      Well if they were looking for "played in" in the present tense then all the callers would be correct!!! The last time I checked, Wings is a famous band... They should have said "the band he used to play in"

      real hard imitating Ginger's style with his rolls and tom-tom work forming the beat. Most trap drummers focus on high-hat and snare and it's odd for them to shift them focus to lead with tom-toms, almost American Indian style of playing.
