I saw him perform in Toronto twice, the second time in a tiny venue a short while before he took his life. "Blown away" is an understatement. He did not need tricks and faces, he knew how good he was. Watch the video of him and Nils Lofgren dwelling to Shotgun, Nils looked kind of cocky, but knew by the end he'd been playing in front of a master. RIP. 😀

DC late 80s .. he had fight or something happened between them at cell area .. hes been beatsn and its been made to look like suicide .. they tried to get 2nd altopsy but didnt happen , cant remember why .. its never been proven .. he was there cause he followed his mate down rd that his wife rung up police on cause she thought he was giving roy drugs (he wasnt using ) he took off so roy chased him down rd .. next thing she gets rung up and roys dead ,, she got fuk all answers how and why he ended up there then , and they , state , just quickly said case death ,suicide etc .. and closed ... everybody knew differant afyer seeing his body but they couldnt prove it ...
Should do a movie about Roy Buchanan. Fascinating, puzzling, riveting life story with a strange ending. Scenes like this, watch a great player with a garage band playing for a few bucks is simply amazing, sad, and asks the question - WHY? Roy's life begs for a movie.
And emphasize that nearly all players now need pedals to do what he does with nothing but strings and knobs. Best wawa player ever.. but no wawa pedal! Lol
It was well known Roy liked his alcohol. Roy reminds me of Rory Gallagher in the sense that neither were interested in the trappings of fame. I respect that they forged their reputation and legacies on their terms. RIP to both

I saw him at least 15 times. To me, he was one of the best ever. He would show up and plug into a small amp that was on a folding chair. Then, they would put a microphone in front of the amp . That was it. Then he would play his ass off. R I P Roy.
Roy is one of the greatest! He was the pioneer of the Telecaster sound, everyone else just followed him and the sound. Sad he didn't get more recognition, I was onto him in the 60's and no one during that time could come close to his playing.
It doesn't take long for the "such and such was better than such and such" comments to leave a bad taste in my mouth. I'm just content to enjoy great musicians when I can.
I saw Roy play once in a little theatre in Bethlehem PA in the 70s when I was in high school. We were waiting in the parking lot before the show, and a station wagon with Virginia plates pulled up next to my car. It was Roy and his family! Kids tumbled out of the car, McDonalds wrappers all around the seats, and Roy went to the back of the car and lifted out his guitar case. I jumped out and ran over to him and shook his hand! And the show that night? Awesome!

Strange setting for his music, but the building acoustics were very good. It cost 50p (about a dollar) to see him----what a night! I love Eric Clapton's playing, as well as many other great guitar players, but I; for the life of me can't figure out how such a great guitarist as Roy Buchanan did not rise above them.
I think he never wanted to - he wasn't interested in fame or big money. I think he even gave up playing for some years so he could raise a family. I saw him in 1974 or 75 and it seemed to me he was a much more exciting player than Santana and Clapton, who both played Toronto that same year, but he seemed content to just amble along, plug in, play like the blazes, get paid, and go home!
iain399 I have seen both Clapton and Santana live, in all honesty I found Clapton boring like he was going through the motions, it was like sitting through a classroom lesson and Santana plays with such ease it seems like little effort. I still feel very privileged to have seen these artists, but I was a Jimi fan and never got to see him sadly.
John Lang That's because Clapton's done it all thousands of times. Check out, for instance, him playing "Forty Four" with Wynton Marsalis a few years back. His solo is brilliant and you can tell he's totally consumed by the music at that moment.

Roy was as good as anyone, man knew a guitar inside and out. He invented the artificial harmonic style that was adopted as a signature by Billy Gibbons and used by many others, The Stones asked him to join the band after Brian Jones and he declined. He was too humble sometimes for his own good.

He was such a Humble Guy.i managed to get Back Stage and Saw him chatting with a Shy Female Blues Guitarist Lyn Campbell ? So got a Bad Shot with No Flash of them together. but Read that he Died in a Japan Jail a Short time after Leaving NZ after Being Picked up Drunk on the streets from Drinking to Much Saki in a Blues Bar Then read later he Died in the USA .
I love Roy but its a shame that he was reduced to playing in high school gyms and taping his t-shirt to the wall in hopes that someone would buy one or two. Very sad.
He wasn't "reduced to playing in small venues" , he often played large venues up until about 4 years before his death. He seemed to prefer the crowds up close and personal.

just a regular tele pickup, but take off cover, polepieces can get closer to the strings, there is plenty of air inside between cover and poles, this makes great a sound change

I saw Cream live in the late sixtes and they were great.But Roy Buchanan could have not got into this radio tune. Don't know why he did.Still, I love the guy and miss his guitar playing. RIP. I once was listening to the radio and the DJ announced he was giving away tickets to a rock concert in Atlanta to the first caller who could tell him correctly the famous band that Paul McCartney played in. Every caller dialed in and said WINGS! I almost died and realized how musically illiterate we Americans are.

Looks like his good ol' 52 with possibly a peavey neck on it...he changed that neck quite a few times pretty sure.
@@bobjohnsdadsband3343 that is not his old 52 and that is not a peavey neck, thats a bill lawrence tele with the original neck. Roy later put a neck from a telecaster custom on it and you can see it on the cover of one of his alligator records albums in that incarnation

real hard imitating Ginger's style with his rolls and tom-tom work forming the beat. Most trap drummers focus on high-hat and snare and it's odd for them to shift them focus to lead with tom-toms, almost American Indian style of playing.
