BEST DIY Solder Helping Hands (Third Hand)

  • This is by far the best helping hand I've ever used for soldering!
    Pretty cheap to make as a DIY project and you'll use it forever!
    THE WIRE I USED is: 5mm armature wire
    I used that little helping hand thing for quite a lot now and it was a pain every time.
    It's probably good enough when you have to hold a little circuit board or something like that, but for what I use it is just NOT GOOD ANOUGH!
    So my friend Chad Kapper gave me the idea to use that thick alluminum wire (I think it's called Alluminum Armature wire) and I really have to thank him because it's really great. Really stiff and it works just great!!!
    Can't be any more happy with it, considering that I spent almost nothing to make it...
    Can't wait to solder stuff with it but then I thought I can use thore alluminum arms for other things, so I made some more...
    I really can't tell you how useful they are...
    I hope you enjoy!

    Love it, I'll get onto it cause hate the floppy crocodile clips on my store bought helping hands. Even wrapping the teeth with heatshrink, jaws bite and mark softer insulation.

    If I position two wires next to each other to solder them together will they stay together once I release the arms or is there some spring back in the arms that will create a gap between the wires when I release the arms?

    Ciao Giacomo
    Your best video yet!!! Sharp, crisp and funny!!! Thought the voice was great as (to my mind) you've got to be some sort of an un-human robot sod with 5 hands to get the stupid little 3 armed gizmo to a) not topple b) be in the correct orientation c) still not topple d) provide squinting opportunities AND e) too late as its toppled over....!!!
    And seriously I'm lusting after that toolbox organisation!!!!
    Cool work, again!!! And thanks for your efforts to share your stuff.

Hell, this aint no Disney, this is ART!!!! Have fun and dont sweat it too much. Im sure it will be fine however you tell a story. Cheers.

    For the pliable arms I used rubber covered 12 inch GearTies by Nite Ize available from HomeDepot or online.Just snip the ends off, stick one end in a hole in the wood base and strip the rubber off the other end of the wire to attach to clips, etc. Easy Peasy!

    • @rantalbott6963
      @rantalbott6963 6 років тому +1

      If you're using those for tying looped cables/rope/etc, Walmart sells something very similar they call "Gear Snake" in the camping section. Only costs $4 or $5 for a 16-foot roll. You don't get the nice little rubber bulbs on the ends, and it only comes in orange, but the price makes those features easy to sacrifice ;-)
      And you always get just the length you need: I unroll some, twist it, then cut it. If I guessed wrong about the length, just untwist and adjust it before cutting.

    • @patmurch6184
      @patmurch6184 4 роки тому +1

      Ran Talbott I bought the gear snake a long time ago and it seems nice at first but the wire inside ends up poking out the ends of every piece you cut and the rubber is very cheap the more you move it around the more it rips. Basically just good for wrapping things up etc

      The helping hand clip is close to 4mm in diameter which would be more like 6 gauge wire (5/32).

      +JAMdiversified I think it was aluminium wire I used to see people use it for securing sculptures It's just a thick metal wire in the end. You can find some from hobby shops or just order it online.
