  • This is how I made a very quick and dirty third hand (helping hand) for soldering or other work that involves holding small parts together.
    Supplies & Tools:
    DeWALT table saw - amzn.to/2iaJmgT
    12 AWG solid core wire - amzn.to/3284pXa
    DeWALT 20V Max XR Drill + Driver - amzn.to/1TkuNoq
    Aligator clips, large - amzn.to/32dtBMg
    Aligator clips, small - amzn.to/2vGn5l0
Soldering iron - Aoyue 936 (no longer made?)
    Heat shrink tubing - amzn.to/2u9EbHn

As someone without a helping hand, I find a video of a diy helping hand that requires a helping hand to build it. What a time to be alive.

I did mine with number 10 solid wire. You just gave me an idea on how to hold them to a piece of wood. Thank you for sharing.

This is such a great idea! I was looking to buy one of these but I have everything I need to make one, I just need to pick some alligator clips at the craft store and I’ll be ready! Thank you for sharing!

Great solution buddy, thanks for the video, you can use hanger wire for stronger and less flexi arms

Made a similar model to yours last night but I used a dodge tranny pan and just soldered the 12 awg to the tranny pan at the bolt holes and it works great!!!
    Thanks for the idea!!!

Cool vid. I hadn't thought about putting making the bottom a box, but that s a good idea. I don't have any trash copper , but I do have a roll of construction tie wire.

Great idea! Quick thought, might be an idea to strip the insulation off so you can heat the copper every now and again as it work hardens.

Wire can be bought by length (per meter) and is not that pricey. It is more expensive to buy wood, glue, and have drill with drill bit, especially for someone that is specialized in electronics and don't have (home)workshop.
That to the side, this is one of the better helping hands designs. I really liked wood screw wire fasteners; simple and effective.

I’ve always noticed how you hold your drill with your index finger extended and using your middle finger to pull the trigger. I’ve seen some other you tubers do this. Is this simply just the way you learned or are there any benefits to this like stability or control? Just curious.

    • @Makify1

I never realized I held a drill this way! lol. I suppose the extended index finger provides more stability and gives me more fine control over the position of the drill.

cant we buy steel or aluminum wire? steel would be cheaper and would have strength at a thinner gauge. if anyone knows if this would work let meknow.

I feel so stupid when I see something so obvious yet so simple. Thanks for the info. Will build one with, like you said, shorter wire. Seen a guy build one using those $1 store flexible led lamps that was also cool. They may hold better than the wire or actually, here’s an idea, run the wire inside!! Heck I just came up with an idea now I don’t feel so stupid! 😂

If we have 3 hands, we will need three eyes, three ears, three nose holes, three *reasts, three legs and three buttocks.
Almost a remake of human layout.

Always solder thick wire gauges, crimping is not always effective, specially for electrical applications of high current loads.

    Very informative tutorial.
    Reasons:
    1. No hype
    2. Step by step explanations
    3. Clear video
    4. I also learnt some valuable table saw tricks.
