My son got a guitar from Santa last Christmas. I couldn't put it down. So I bought my own and put it in my living room. I practice every day. I'm now learning wanted d.o.a. from you!
Hey Marty. My dad is very ill. He’s an old rocker. I’m going to a festival where a friend is playing in a band and he offered to let me come up and play if my dad is well enough to sing. I asked my dad what song he would do and he said Larry Graham’s “One In A Million” Odd for a rocker but he loves R&B. Huge request here!! In the next week can you post simple chord progressions for that song??? I know it’s a big ask. I’m hoping to make a lasting memory. I struggle to read music, but one play through of your tutorials and I got it. I used someone else’s video to learn. When I play the song through my PA and go through the chord progressions, it sound horrible. If you can help THANK YOU!!!
MODES! Ahhh!!!! This is when I stopped learning theory when I was a teenager. Daunting, elusive subject!!!! Now, I’m coming back to it at 40 and teaching my 10-year old son to play (bought him his first guitar this year). Can’t wait for the chance to look at your class, Marty. (Love that Gibson, btw-been dreaming of one for some time now). Thanks for all you do!!!
Marty, Im a Veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom. I struggle with PTSD and use music as a way of coping. Ive watched many instructors online and find you the most helpful. I like the way you break everything down and the energy you have about you. Thank you for doing what you do!
Learning and getting into guitar is widely known to be meditative and therapeutic. I certainly find it so. Hours and hours. Very sincerely Wishing you a constructive and successful way through an experience I can’t pretend to comprehend
i think it's good to dabble with modes early on, but learning all the positions of the pentatonic scale somewhat well before really diving to modes, gives you a great base to build other scales on! the five positions are actually surprisingly easy to learn, i learned the basic root on the lowest string position and the one above that first, then after i knew those by heart i added the others. what really made me learn them all well, was to learn them 3 strings at a time. so i started with Am pentatonic, and figured out all the notes in all 5 positions, on the G, B and E strings first. played them up and down for couple days. then i did the same for the E, A and D strings, then i tied them together in a day and boom, a week after i could play every position! i continued to go through them couple times a day every day and now about two months after, i can actually move the scales to pretty much whatever root note i want and the shapes are there! this 3 strings at a time up and down method ensured, that i got more repetitions on all the positions, rather than just trying to clumsily stumble my way through the full 6 string scale patterns. it was way easier, and i mean waaay easier to lock the shapes to memory 3 strings at a time rather than 6 strings at a time, i learned 3 positions just as fast as i learned the first one which i approached by trying to learn the whole shape at once. next stop is trying to do the same to major and minor scales and modes is something i want to try to understand aswell now. sry for long winded text, hope this helps somebody at all and feel free to ask if something's incoherent, i try to clear up on that. 2nd language so hard to explain concepts sometimes 😁 cheers!
Marty, when Rick Beato talks about modes, it goes over my head so fast I get the urge to reflexively duck! But my bet is that you make modes easy, natural and useful! Thanks for your efforts, man! You are my favorite guitar teacher! :)
Perfect way of explaining modes! Just thinking of the major scale but focusing on a certain interval as your home base makes this so much easier to understand
My son and I have learnt so much about playing guitar from your videos over the past seven years. You make things easy to understand not boggle us with words and fast playing. Without you I would not got as far as I have. Thank you very much Marty for taking the time to help us.
Marty, firstly I want to say I love all your videos, you're a natural born teacher and I've learned so much from watching your guitar tutorials and lessons, but this simple demonstration has taken all the theory and jargon and put it in a way I can see and hear, You just gave me that eureka moment, Where everything I've been struggling to comprehend in my head just click, Thank you so much for this beautiful crash course I look forward to learning, Now I actually understand what is going on and how the modes are related, Yesterday I learned the simple g blues scale 3 6 3 4 5 3 5 I also learned c Lydian 8 10 7 9 10 7 9 10 7 9 11 8 10 7 8 But this simple video made everything make so much sense I've been watching countless videos on theory and modes and scales So many people breaking it down in their own way But by simply playing over the route note and showing us the different tones you took weeks of learning and made it click and stick Thank you once again good sir Much love from Ireland 💚😎
As soon as he switched to Dorian I could tell that was the mode Santana used a lot in his early days when creating songs and solos. It sounds honestly just like him.
Thanks Marty finally found the right teacher to break 🙏 this all down. I am a medically retired EMT who served proudly during Operation Home Front. I have a Traumatic Brain Injury since birth severe anxiety bi polar insomnia clinical depression PTSD OCD etc.....youve helped me more than you know
Just finished a couple courses on scales and it explained modes for me in an understandable way for the first time. Then I came across this video and you really cleared the air! Thank you for this straight forward way to look at modes! I wish I had not been so intimidated by the concept for so many years! I'm an old dude now but I'm learning many new tricks.
I love when he plays something he definitely didn't plan and improvised on a spot and it sounds amazing and he gets SUCH A HAPPY FACE then, you just know that he's proud of himself and thinks "that's what I am learning guitar for" Keep it up Marty, we love you and are also proud of what you achieved
Marty this short crash course has helped me so much in understanding modes. From the first couple of minutes I was able to to get the jist of things. Just the crash course has helped me immensely with soloing and spicing up my solos. Spewing that I can't afford to get the full course. Thanks Marty for the great work!!!
Rick B has explained this so many times and I have never been able to get my head wrapped around it. Now a friggen light has just turned on in my head!! THANK YOU!!!!

Marty you have been an amazing teacher and being a stuck intermediate player this is where I've been stuck I thatnk you so much for spreading your knowledge of music on to the community it's truly made the difference in my playing
Marty thanks for all the free content you put up for us I have tried many other guitar sites to find one that would suit me i.e. learn songs as well as theory that I can understand, the modes were a mystery to me before watching this video now getting the gist of it. At 76 finding Marty Music was the best thing for me.............Marty plus trusty looper...cant go wrong. We is Rocking...now back to these modes...engage the old brain + watch video again 😎 Many thanks Marty from Queensland Australia
omg !!!! im so glad you uploaded this video ive been following you for so many years and honestly im inspired to see your dedication towards the instrument and the channel !! hands down sir 🙌
Yeah!!! Marty. Great deal man, just added this to the rest of my Marty arsenal, Happy guitar learning With Marty my friends. Thank You so much. Looking forward to your live streams.
Marty you taught me these 7 scales in your studio up stairs in Calgary, I think by the Beacon hotel or may have been in mayland heights 40 years ago. My name is Ken.In 3 lessons and thats all I've ever needed. Thx Man
A maneira como agarras a guitarra e como te deslocas livremente no braço é verdadeiramente admirável. Sigo-te há já uns bons anos e és dos poucos onde volto sempre. Obrigado pelo teu trabalho e pela tua inspiração! The way you take the guitar and you play freely on it's neck is truly admirable. I've been following you for a good few years now and you are one of the few I keep coming back to. Thank you for your work and your inspiration!
My first dive into modes (not too long ago) was through a site that attempted to explain it using the C note as the root for each mode (C Ionian, C Dorian, etc.). It occurred to me pretty quickly that this was not the best way to think about modes, and that it made more sense to look at them in exactly the manner you went through in this video, using sequentially the notes of the C major scale as the roots (C Ionian, D Dorian, etc.). I have been practicing a little with it by running through each scale, followed by playing the 1-4-5-1 chord progression for that mode. The tough part for me occurs in the modes where one of those chords is B dim, as I am not used to using diminished chords, but that is one more thing that I am getting by doing this routine. I have not really developed the technique of soloing over chords yet, which would give me another way to work with it.
Marty Question - I get that you're playing the same scale over the different chords in the chosen key BUT please clarify what you mean by tonal center - Are you saying to find and focus on the root note of each of the applicable chords within that "same scale"?
🎶 Mar-tay! I really enjoy improvisational guitar playing. Making it up as the jam session builds a life of it's own. Learning these "modes" would truly add to this style of playing. Love the lessons, thanks Mar-tay! 🎶... 😎✨
Love your passion and enthusiasm! Keeps the rest of us schmucks going haha. I've known only the pentatonic scale for about....15 years now? A course by you on the modes is exactly what a lot of us need probably lol. Thanks so much for your hard work!
I absolutely love the natural minor scale, it's my favorite.... there's just so much amazing stuff you can do with it. play any backing track that's in a major key and just use the relative minor scale over it and it's awesome what you can come up with =P

Inside Out from Jimi Hendrix
Very cool. Great teaching technique Marty. I've never heard modes explained better. You definitely make connecting the dots easier. Thanks.
I thought MJB wrote that his son got a guitar from Santana... 🤣
Hey Marty. My dad is very ill. He’s an old rocker. I’m going to a festival where a friend is playing in a band and he offered to let me come up and play if my dad is well enough to sing. I asked my dad what song he would do and he said Larry Graham’s “One In A Million”
Odd for a rocker but he loves R&B. Huge request here!! In the next week can you post simple chord progressions for that song??? I know it’s a big ask. I’m hoping to make a lasting memory. thank you for your service. its a shame the nato/un decided to leave the afghans to themselves!
Thank you for your sacrifice. Music is one of the best ways to heal. Hope 3 years later you are doing good!
Learning and getting into guitar is widely known to be meditative and therapeutic. I certainly find it so. Hours and hours. Very sincerely Wishing you a constructive and successful way through an experience I can’t pretend to comprehend
Me: Just started learning the pentatonic
Also me: “why Not do a deep dive into phrygian and myxolidian?“
That seems to be me too. I tend to jump into things far beyond my skills etc. But I think that's what keeps us from getting bored.
i think it's good to dabble with modes early on, but learning all the positions of the pentatonic scale somewhat well before really diving to modes, gives you a great base to build other scales on! the five positions are actually surprisingly easy to learn, i learned the basic root on the lowest string position and the one above that first, then after i knew those by heart i added the others. what really made me learn them all well, was to learn them 3 strings at a time.

You just gave me that eureka moment,
Where everything I've been struggling to comprehend in my head just click,

I look forward to learning,
Now I actually understand what is going on and how the modes are related,
Yesterday I learned the simple g blues scale
3 6
3 4 5
3 5
I also learned c Lydian
8 10
7 9 10
7 9 10
7 9 11
8 10
7 8
But this simple video made everything make so much sense
I've been watching countless videos on theory and modes and scales
So many people breaking it down in their own way
But by simply playing over the route note and showing us the different tones you took weeks of learning and made it click and stick
Thank you once again good sir
Much love from Ireland 💚😎
As soon as he switched to Dorian I could tell that was the mode Santana used a lot in his early days when creating songs and solos. It sounds honestly just like him.
F-lydian sounded like some Simpsons action there for a second or two. Thanks Marty for making Modes consumable and understandable.
Because it is in Lydian.
Meet George Jetson
@@zprince4120 “Jane, His Wife!”
Yep, I think Marty was trying to emphasise that in his example. It’s a great example of that Lydian feel.
*Simpsons intensifies*
Thanks Marty finally found the right teacher to break 🙏 this all down. I am a medically retired EMT who served proudly during Operation Home Front. I have a Traumatic Brain Injury since birth severe anxiety bi polar insomnia clinical depression PTSD OCD etc.....youve helped me more than you know

Marty Question - I get that you're playing the same scale over the different chords in the chosen key BUT please clarify what you mean by tonal center - Are you saying to find and focus on the root note of each of the applicable chords within that "same scale"?
