She was definitely leaning this way and I don't doubt that George plans for her to go a similar route, the problem with this is that it's horribly rushed. It needed a full season of development and context, not a 20 min difference between her trying to resolve it peacefully and torching the whole place down while purposely ignoring Cersei.
I'm all for Mad Queen/full Azula Daenerys, but it being rushed is criminal. (Still, episode had some stellar cinematography and sound design so at least this season looks pretty while it burns down)

Just coz they ring the bell doesn’t mean they’re going to totally surrender. What if she is just trying to lure the army in and start burning them all with wildfire once inside the city? Cersei is very much capable of that. And wdyk there’s a few green wildfire afterall, after Dany set them all up with Drogon ofc. I’m proud of Dany now, she’s so stupid in the few previous episodes. She knows what really need to be done to get the throne, but play all nice about it. Welp, she did it now and gj for that.

Daenaerys has absolutely been crafted to be on a knife's edge of morals/megalomania from the very first season of the show, and the very first book in the series. To have her just get what she wants and still be a 'good person' would feel like a betrayal of everything Game of Thrones is. This isn't the kind of story where the good guy wins or even stays the good guy. It never has been. Someone said she was in control and still cared about the citizens prior to her break when staring at the Red Keep, but she was not in control of her emotions. Ever since she went North, the show made a point to show her increasing frustration with the people of Westeros, when they didn't want to bend the knee to her. That frustration and anger at being met with such opposition only grew. In this same episode, Tyrion begged her to reconsider burning everything, and her reaction was 'Meh, my mercy will come after. When the next generation is free.' She had already given up on Tyrion's advice and the people of King's Landing. In her mind, she'd worked so hard to get to Westeros, for this dream of being a savior, and the people there still didn't love her. The tragedy here, is that like Dany feared, once the gears started moving in favor of Jon OVER Dany, a lot of us saw this coming and knew it was going to fall apart for Daenerys.
Dany's story to me, is a more human and tragic look at the development of a tyrant. We had always seen tyrants, prior to Game of Thrones, from an outside perspective or their own AFTER their descent. This is the first time we've seen it happen to someone we could like and understand. That's why it punches you in the gut. Not because it's character assassination. This murderous 'fire and blood' rage was always in Daenerys, and she finally got pushed too far. She felt alone, she felt like all of the citizens hated her. In her mind she had no reason to love the people of King's Landing, and in her battle lust madness, they too became threats to her reign. It's fucked up, it's terrible, but it is true to what has been built in her to this point. Missandei wasn't the only thing to push her over the edge, but she was the last real straw.
That's my take on it anyway, though I do think had there been more episodes or another season, a lot of audiences like yourselves, would have felt that this progression was more organic, and it wouldn't feel so abrupt. Because it IS abrupt, due to the rushed pace of Season Eight. In that, HBO definitely did us all, and the characters, a disservice.

Very well said. I think you conveyed what the writers have completely failed to do so in the show, and THAT is ultimately my biggest issue with this turn and why I can't even bear to watch the last episode anymore because I do feel her character has been assassinated as a result of their poor handling of the writing and pacing. I don't think they did a good enough job even conveying that she had this madness in her up until this point. Dany is rash, but people forget she's also young. A lot of her threats in the past have just been that...threats. She always listened to counsel when it comes down to it. I think she's well within reason to be angry with everyone right now which would drive her to make even rasher decisions, but she shouldn't be looney-bin insane like they're depicting her to be. I will still maintain that that part was not earned at all and if anything, we should actually feel bad for a previously beloved and sympathetic character being forcefully driven to the edge and over rather than feeling gleeful at her demise.

A beautifully articulated, lucid and mature response in the middle of a stormy UA-cam comments section! What an unexpected treat! A knowledgeable person who gets "GoT" as the tragedy it is, not as the epic fantasy that the majority needs to justify the horror of war and the reality of those who feel entitled to rule humanity!
And I agree with your statement that It might have benefited from a longer season or another one. But almost nobody realizes how ambitious as a TV series "Game of Thrones" is, and how demanding has been to write and produce a season a year, or two years for this extra epic one, for the production team, the cast and the crew.

That is Dany. She didn't flinch at seeing her brother brutally murdered. She embraced the Dothraki. The better people around her checked her. That's gone now. She's a warlord with a dragon. She loved the slaves she freed insomuch as they loved her. You don't love her and bend the knee, she'll roast you. They've set this up for a long while. We just loved the idea of a dragon queen laying waste to the assholes in Westeros we came to despise for seven seasons. It still came to a head quickly, but given the time they had to work with, it was going to be rushed. But to say this goes against her character I think is way off. Rushing is going against the character. They are related. Rushing prevents being able to properly communicate to your audience; without that communication you have a seemingly warped character. There is little difference between the two. The general reactions are clear that some sort of communication fell through. They chose this shortened format so they don't get to use that as an excuse. Writing is communication and they've failed on that front based on these kinds of reactions; I don't think there can be much debate about that. A sizable chunk of your audience reacting this way says something about your ability to translate which is the essence of writing, especially considering these issues have only begun recently which might not be a coincidence.

Man, I guess nobody gets the main point of the massacre. When the bells rang Dany realized she hasn't "won" anything. No back up of the people, no claim to the throne, so she chooses terror. Dany doing things for terror is in line with her whole character arc. She ruthlessly burned thousands of men in uniform, slavers, oppositions. There is not THAT MUCH more necessary to run amok. It's just the state of denial most people are in. Also, even history told us so many times how ruthless the "good guys" can be: The completely unnecessary destruction of Dresden in WW2 (flames!) or the nuclear strikes of the americans. A person believing that they know the truth and they have all the right answers and starting by killing those who are objectively "bad people/enemies", but eventually coming to justify the killing of anyone in the name of their "greater good, that only they know" is the oldest tale in the book. I just think it's funny how the people who rooted for Dany and were totally ignoring her red flags and now they way this was stupid and out of character when, if they paid attention to her character, they should know it really isn't and her "fall from grace" mirrors how her father turned into who he was in the end.

That's why I never rooted for Dany. She's just power hungry. "I want my throne!". "I have dragons" through all the seasons. I like her when she's in late Season 7 when she toned down a bit because she fell in love with Jon. Though she become Mad Queen now, I'm not mad. It's clearly rushed. But did not butchered her character like everyone said.

She was one of the most delusional characters throughout the story. Everything she ever talked about and fought for was the iron throne. The only time she fought for anyone else was Jon, because she loves him. But the moment he revealed the truth about him and he became a threat to her claim, she started to work him and tell him not to tell anyone and it became all about her again. Now the only ones who told her not to do this were Tyrion, who she barely trusts at this stage, and Varys, who now she sees only as a traitor. Also Missandei literally told her to burn everything down before dying. So you see, she's always had the "desire" to burn cities and everyone in them, and she's only got shit thrown at her since she arrived in Westeros, so she was at a tipping point and it wasn't going to be long before she finally did what she always wanted, specially with all her close friends gone.

While she has done cruel things in the past, I mean they’ve all been things that rulers have done who aren’t considered “mad”. Like, burning the Tarlys for not bending the knee? That’s pretty damn common in the Middle Ages, forget about the rest of human history. Killing the Masters in Meereen by crucifying them? Rulers we have called “great” have done far worse. These aren’t indicators of madness, it’s just how things used to be done. And when it comes to this episode, cities have always been sacked, raped and pillaged throughout time, so it isn’t outside the norm. The disappointment, at least for me, is that it does in a way throw away most of Dany’s character development since season 1. However, she has lost a lot, and that would make most break down. I just thought that dany, considering all that she’s been thru, would not succumb like your average person.

I know this is crazy but I really love what they did with dany. All the way back in season 3 I was like "why does everyone love her? She's kinda crazy." She's a classic bloodthirsty, self righteous conqueror. Crucifying and burning the slave masters with a satisfying look while convincing others (and probably herself) that it was okay because of "justice" or "breaking the wheel." She also showed disgust in the fighting pits while also showing no such disgust when she's the one doing the killing, which goes to show her false sense of morality. I do have some problems with the execution (they could have given more focus on why she abandoned her morality) but saying it was out of character, went against her arc (it was the exact opposite), or came out of nowhere is completely wrong.
And if you don't understand why she went as far as she did, look up the rape of nanking (very nsfl) if you haven't already. Whatever was driving those soldiers is something that I could never understand, as well as most other healthy people. And it's probably the same thing that would be driving dany.
Edit: just noticed the parallel between jon and John Heinrich detlef rabe when he stabbed the northman. Obviously jon isn't on the same moral standing as a literal nazi but it's still a cool parallel.

Ankur How though? Dany lost so much so quickly and at this point truly has no one to trust. She was grief-stricken and that let out her ruthless side. After the bells rung, she must of thought it wasn’t enough to cover all of her loss. So she decides it is time to punish her enemies, and let her inner dragon free. She explicitly stated her desire for “burning and laying waste to cities” from season 2. This was the moment when no advisor would convince her other wise.

The dude deserted his wife and tiny kids (after totally disrespecting his wife at the Tourney at Harrenhall) , had his marriage annulled which made his little kids bastards, and left his first family to a horrible fate while he ran off with Lyanna without a word to anyone. His dad subsequently burned Lyanna’s dad and brother and would’ve killed Robert and Ned.

You all talk about all the people shes burnt in the past and stuff but none of them were particularly innocent, even the tarlys were given a chance to join her, that was war. THIS was definitely killing innocent people. Nothing daeny has done has ever placed her as crazy enough to just outright kill innocent civilians. I thought if they were going the mad queen route they would have had her burn every lannister soldier even after they won, as in lined them all up when the battle was over and execute them needlessly. That would have been a believable way of showing her as a mad queen. Deciding to kill innocents after the bell of surrender was already rang...yeah not so much.
