Hey No M, sorry but UA-cam won't allow my to respond to your individual comment for some reason. But in any case, yes this speed burst technique works great for just about any scale, lick or technique on the guitar. :)
Just wonderful, been searching for "justin guitar ear trainer app" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Peynharlotte Acoustic Smasher - (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some awesome things about it and my friend got excellent results with it.
I've been looking all over youtube for how to increase your speed and I knew tension was one of the main factors to play faster. I believe this excercise is everything I've been looking for. Thanks a lot! I can't wait to start! I'll let you know my progress.
Thank you. You're pry the only person who actually explains the technique. There are way too many UA-camrs who just want to advertise their website and not explain anything at all.
Thanks for the sage advice! Of all the students I've had, I'd say tension has been the no. 1 impediment to real fluidity on the instrument. It was certainly mine when I was really trying to develop my chops; I thought that to play faster I'd have to bear down harder. It seems a lot of developing players feel that way. Even though it's become instinctive for me, in the role of teacher, to work with students on relaxation and emphasizing its importance (regardless of speed), I still find that after a while my own tension will creep up in almost imperceptible increments. So one day I'll be working on some new material and suddenly finding that I just can't get it. And what's my first instinct? I'll check everything my pick, my pick angle, my hand position, etc.-everything except my tension. Finally, I'll think of checking my physical tension; and 10 times out of 10, that's the culprit. Tension's my chronic road block, and the one thing that I always seem to need someone to point out to me. So that's a longwinded way of saying Thanks for the reminder, for the excellent remedies, for your fine playing, and for your entire series. While I'm at it, thanks for your dedication to the instrument and to teaching. This is an act of immense generosity on your part. All the best!
This makes complete sense. It is so easy to tense up, lock up and come to a standstill. I'll adopt these exercises. Thank you for sharing. Best wishes to you.
Thanks, really helped with understanding how to use a metronome and incorporating it to increase speed. After 1 year of playing, I am finally adapting UA-camrs' believes that I should be using a metronome.
I’ve been playing a long time, self taught before studying in college and teaching private lessons. I hit a plateau, and had looked everywhere for help; this video appears to have fixed it. Very simple approach, that quickly turns into gains 💪🏾 💪🏾
excellent lesson! my A # 1 Numero Uno biggest pain in the ass problem is excessive tension in my right hand. i'm a lefty that plays righty so its even more of a problem because motor control is lacking in my right hand. i have actually done some work using the short burst type technique you described here, albiet intuitively, so at least i was on the right track but this def gives me some new ideas and makes me realize more than ever i have GOT to teach this right hand to relax or it'll always hold me back! thank you!
You know, I've been trying master the two pentatonic triplett runs in "Good Times Bad Times" solo, but haven't been able to play them up to speed. I came across this video, and tried doing them in speed bursts and staying relaxed, and I think I got it now! Thanks much for this tip.
If anyone is having a hard time getting started like me, start off with just hammer-ons using your 2-3-4 fingers to build strength and coordination. You can also do pull-offs too with these fingers. Mix up the order too. I was having a really hard time getting my ring finger especially to hit independently and on time. After a few sessions a day of 2-3-4 H/Os and P/Os for about a week I really saw improvement in finger coordination and timimg. Now I can move on to mastering Guitar Speed Bursts. Thanks Carl for another GREAT lesson!
Descending bursts are much harder for me. I can perform ascending sixteenth note bursts at 92 bpm but if I try to perform descending speed bursts I have to decrease the tempo to 88 bpm. Thank you for the lesson.
Great video! Two things I thought to do as I'm going through this are to do both up down and down up alternate picking, as well as doing 3nps scale shapes with triplet speed bursts, it forces your hand into awkward string changes
you should do a new video of speed burst with sweep picking arpeggios and also left hand legato speed burst ! you'd also would be the first on UA-cam with a video of those techniques with speed burst
You are so well balanced, relaxed, funny ,great knowledge and skills. Somebody compared you with Bob Ross and I get it you are the Mister Miyagi of guitar. Such a relief to watch and learn. I learned a lot from your lessons. Thanks for everything 🤟😎🤟
This really works... Im learning "Vivaldi Tribute" and this speed burst technique really helps me .. specially with going from one string to another. The first time i watch this vids i thought it just a waste of time, but im wrong :p
I am very shitty when it comes to speed and right hand endurance, I don’t know why I can’t get better. But this seems really helpful I will try this. Thank you Carl, you are the best
PLEASE READ... I NEED A PRACTICE ROUTINE TO BUILD POINTER TO PINKIE ROLLS... LIKE HOW DO I GO FROM POINTER MIDDLE, RING, TO PINKIE FINGER AS FAST A POSSIBLE WITHOUT MY MIDDLE, RING, AND PINKIE CLOSEING AT THE SAME TIME?
Thanks so much, I don't really have a problem with my picking hand. For me it's the fretting hand that claws up and tenses up, but this technique helped nevertheless. Thanks!
Hey carl. This technique dis help me a bunch woth the tension and everything. I have to ask about your speed picking technique, because I noticed it's not the straight back and forth alternate picking but rather the more "rotational" picking if you will. I kinda started to do that and it does help ease that tension a little bit,but my wrist is still too straight. I know for the technique you're supposed to life your wrist slightly off the bridge. The problem is its a little harder to control what I'm doing. What can I do to kind of help "tighten" up the movement so I can still do it fluidly? Thanks a bunch! Your lessons have done me good :)
Why do I have so much trouble doing the 4-3-2-1 back up the neck? Even playing it slower. I just don't understand why it's more difficult to keep my left hand in sync in that direction.
Will you please do a lesson on Bare Foot Blue Jean Night by Jake Owen. Also your lessons are the best ever, it has really improved my guitar playing thank you.
I think (Classic guitar ) players , would find it a little bit hard to practice , cuz there is a small distance between strings and neck , that isn't existed as same in Electronic guitars .
I used to have the same problem. Like it’s the sword you must learn to keep your fingers strong while allowing the wrist to relax but not weak... you can try imagining that you are holding the pick firmly but gently from the center of your body using internal strength more than finger muscles
You don't need to spend hours a day just doing this one exercise to get speed, as long as you're practicing it properly and trying to get each imperfection perfect, you only need to spend like 30 minutes to an hour doing this. Practice other things as well as this though of course, legato exercises are good to make your fretting hand relaxed.
CPOMendez117 thanks for the reply. That's also good to know lol I really don't have the kind mind to practice one thing for to long at a time. It does seem that you have to practice perfectly or you may as well nit practice at all.
Steve Gosen Yeah it takes some proper concentration to practice one thing for longer than like an hour. When you do concentrate and knuckle down to practice something though time can just fly. I've found myself (and this is gonna sound silly) practicing two or three things before and by the time I knew it like six hours had flown by haha. There's nothing better than being patient, sticking to it and seeing some positive results at the end of your hard work, it just depends how willing you are to sit in one place for a few hours.
"A relaxed hand is a fast hand."
Thank you, Carl.
"A relaxed hand is a fast hand." ...man, wish I had learned and realized this a lot sooner, haha. Thank you. I have a clearer direction 🤘🏻
he never gets upset in these videos or raise his voice. he's like the Bob Ross of guitar.
CRIMSON PRODUCTIONS I don't think that's unique to him
Can somebody please link me a video of a guitar instructor getting upset? I think that would be hilarious, no offence lol
Why would he get mad at the camera lmao
😂😂😂 cuts to other yt guitar teachers strait rage quitting mid lesson
So true !!
These speed bursts are amazing, I've been doing them for quite some time now and I'm starting to get extremely fast, very effective
do they really work?
Hey No M, sorry but UA-cam won't allow my to respond to your individual comment for some reason. But in any case, yes this speed burst technique works great for just about any scale, lick or technique on the guitar. :)

Stephen Gritton so has your speed increased?
So are you dead
Thanks, really helped with understanding how to use a metronome and incorporating it to increase speed. After 1 year of playing, I am finally adapting UA-camrs' believes that I should be using a metronome.
This exercise is soooooo good and so simple that hacks the finger speed limits! Tnx a lot!
Does it really work?
@@francescosisto7131 for me yes!
“a relaxed hand is a fast hand, and you’ll also last longer” i think he’s talking about more than the guitar 😂
This video changed my guitar playing. If you're skeptical, trust me, this works.
What was ur bpm before and after?
Thanks so much...this lesson is just what I needed. Much appreciated. Geoff

Any improvement?
To the point and good material as always. I like your channel better then any other on UA-cam guitar lesson wise
Sounds legit. Going to implement this into my daily practice routine for the coming month. Thank you!
finally !! all i needed...you are right to the point without long boring speeches !! thank you,, this is really helping me speed up in no time.
Carl
this is a great lesson ... so simple and (I can imagine ... gonna try it out asap) so effective.
Thanks.

any exercises to strengthen ring and pinky fingers
@@jamesrai5573 Try hanging off a metal bar with only your pinky and ring fingers for 6 hours. That's what all the good players did.
I have a great feeling about this exercise...thank you so much

Great video, played for years and never foccussed on speed. Paying now I'm trying to improve but this was useful.
Great advice👍👍
Great lesson, it is helping me a lot. At first I struggled until I corrected my fretting hand position. Thank you!
Thanks teach ☺️👍
That really helped!

Thanks for another great lesson. I've been really avoiding the metronome till recently , and I wish I'd started sooner .

In how long time approximately you can expect to see results in your speed? If you practice this for 45 minutes per day lets say.
how do I get the TAB for this? clicking on the " click to get the tab" button does not work.

Speed isn't everything ..... It's the way you work it 😉
does this usually take years to get to your speed ? because I'm awful at this.
Depends of your dedication. Several hours a day and you get very fast in a year.
A few minutes day and you will never get fast because it's not enough

Great lesson Carl. Sorry this may sound dumb but I just started using a metronome. Do you have to do the 5 note run between every beep? I'm at 120bpm.
First note on a beat, three notes in between beats, fifth note on the beat...for 16th notes only.
He's doing 16ths here.
