One of the questions that I am constantly asked as a guitar teacher is "what is the best way to develop speed on the guitar?".
Now, just as I point out in the video lesson, speed is not everything, but it is a valuable tool that every musician should have in their toolbox. There are many musical moments where using a little bit of speed in your playing can help convey the emotion you are trying to put into the music.
From my experience as a practicing guitarist in many different styles of music from rock to classical to jazz, I find that the practicing of guitar speed bursts has increased my speed and control on the guitar more than anything else. After more than 20 years of teaching I have also found that to be the case in most students as well.
So why do guitar speed bursts work so well?
Well the number one problem that prevents anyone from playing something that is fast on the guitar is tension. If there is a fast picking sequence most players tend to tense up their picking hand, wrist and forearm. If you have been playing a while you may not even notice it since you are so used to the way the tension feels.
The key to breaking down your own personal speed barrier (while maintaining a clean technique!) is to reduce the amount of tension in your hands to the lowest amount possible.
This is were guitar speed bursts come into play. We will be alternating a quick burst of notes with a longer period of rest and relaxation. You still do this in a rhythm with a metronome so you can gauge your daily progress.
The idea here is to play the quick burst and try to then completely relax during the couple of beats where you aren't playing anything. Then when the next speed burst comes around try to keep that relaxed feeling while playing it. It may seem at first that your loss of tension will create a loss control. This is natural but with continued practice of speed bursts you will be able to play very accurately with absolutely no tension. Everything should feel nice and loose.
In order for this method to work you really need to concentrate and analyze how your hands feel. This relaxation principle goes for the fret hand as well. Stay focused while you are practicing these exercises in order to make sure you are feeling everything correctly. This isn't the type of technique exercise you would want to do while sitting in front of the TV and mindlessly letting your fingers fly around the fretboard.
As you develop that loose and relaxed feel with the shorter speed burst, it will now become time to increase the length of that speed burst. Again you will want to focus on how relaxed you can stay through all of the notes of the guitar speed burst. The longer the speed burst, the more difficult it will be to stay completely relaxed.
I would love to hear from you guys about how this practice method is helping you. It can be applied to many different guitar techniques as well so perhaps I can make some lessons for those if people are interested in it.
Hope this lesson helps you guys break your own speed barriers!!
    Carl...

Thanks for the sage advice! Of all the students I've had, I'd say tension has been the no. 1 impediment to real fluidity on the instrument. It was certainly mine when I was really trying to develop my chops; I thought that to play faster I'd have to bear down harder. It seems a lot of developing players feel that way. Even though it's become instinctive for me, in the role of teacher, to work with students on relaxation and emphasizing its importance (regardless of speed), I still find that after a while my own tension will creep up in almost imperceptible increments. So one day I'll be working on some new material and suddenly finding that I just can't get it. And what's my first instinct? I'll check everything my pick, my pick angle, my hand position, etc.-everything except my tension. Finally, I'll think of checking my physical tension; and 10 times out of 10, that's the culprit. Tension's my chronic road block, and the one thing that I always seem to need someone to point out to me. So that's a longwinded way of saying Thanks for the reminder, for the excellent remedies, for your fine playing, and for your entire series. While I'm at it, thanks for your dedication to the instrument and to teaching. This is an act of immense generosity on your part. All the best!

excellent lesson! my A # 1 Numero Uno biggest pain in the ass problem is excessive tension in my right hand. i'm a lefty that plays righty so its even more of a problem because motor control is lacking in my right hand. i have actually done some work using the short burst type technique you described here, albiet intuitively, so at least i was on the right track but this def gives me some new ideas and makes me realize more than ever i have GOT to teach this right hand to relax or it'll always hold me back! thank you!

If anyone is having a hard time getting started like me, start off with just hammer-ons using your 2-3-4 fingers to build strength and coordination. You can also do pull-offs too with these fingers. Mix up the order too.
I was having a really hard time getting my ring finger especially to hit independently and on time. After a few sessions a day of 2-3-4 H/Os and P/Os for about a week I really saw improvement in finger coordination and timimg. Now I can move on to mastering Guitar Speed Bursts. Thanks Carl for another GREAT lesson!

Hey carl. This technique dis help me a bunch woth the tension and everything. I have to ask about your speed picking technique, because I noticed it's not the straight back and forth alternate picking but rather the more "rotational" picking if you will. I kinda started to do that and it does help ease that tension a little bit,but my wrist is still too straight. I know for the technique you're supposed to life your wrist slightly off the bridge. The problem is its a little harder to control what I'm doing. What can I do to kind of help "tighten" up the movement so I can still do it fluidly? Thanks a bunch! Your lessons have done me good :)
