In this video I am demonstrating an exercise of which I think it's one of the best to train these points:
Finger independence; playing efficient, thuis making no unnecessary movements, and minimizing pressure needed to fret a note.
Play all five examples, and you'll surely see lots of benefits into your own playing!

    Another annoying exercise:
    1. Drop your pick into the guitar hole
    2. Now try to get it out of it.

A Lot of guitar youtubers have made a "things i wish i knew, while learning guitar" types of videos. This comment segment reminds me, of an essentiel piece of advice rarely included: Go easy om yourself while learning!! If something is very challenging, it is all the more important to take a Deep breath, and try to let go of the frustration. You will get it right in due time! Breath and focus my friend. you're doing just fine. 😊

At the age of seventy I picked my guitar back up this January after a decades long hiatus; my granddaughter had received a guitar as a gift and asked if I could help her get started. So that's what we're doing, two newbies traveling together. This exercise looked, and initially felt, impossible. After about ten or fifteen practice sessions using this as part of my warm-up, I am just starting to get it. Hang in there.

Paul, I really enjoy your tutorials, your calm and business like. A brief background, I am 66 have been playing for three yrs. now. Started because I spent 2 yrs. in bed stricken by a very rare nerve condition that basically paralyzed my legs and arms. Being able to walk a little bit I needed to do something about my hands. I grew up with rock and roll, someone gave me a cheap guitar, spent hours ( and still do ) practicing until the fingers started to move. I’m so grateful to the Lord first and the guitar second, now your added to the list. Its been and still is a very rough road, but it is now much more pleasant. With your help on technique and above all psychologically giving me new goals on theory etc. life continues to be pleasant, thanks. By the way just learned Far and Away by the Led

You do every possible combination eg. 1234, 1243, 1324, 1342, 1423, 1432. Then you start with your 2nd finger 2134, 2143 and so on.

My pinky does not want to obey, and always lifts up. I never noticed how inefficient my pinky was being before this exercise, so thank you. I will be adding this exercise to my daily routine.

This one is a little hard for me since I'm only 3 days into playing lol but I've been working on the "spider walk" exercise because I dont have to pick with it and i can barely make it through all the strings before my hand literally checks out on me lmao.

Perfect timing of this video for me to only see it now thanks Paul. Keep up the great work. Do you have a video to help guide those of us with limited practice time how to structure each practice without wasting too much time on certain exercises or skipping important things. I try average 90 mins a day. Thanks from South Africa
