So, What’s the Deal with Monitor Calibration?
The Calibrator in the Video: amzn.to/2xUKLln
    Low-Cost Alternative: amzn.to/2jPh3rF
To be honest, I have spent years editing photos without ever calibrating my monitor and I thought I wasn’t missing out on anything. It turns out, I was wrong.
As it turns out, even a high-end monitor will degrade over time and colors won’t render properly. The calibrator we test in this video is the Datacolor Spyder5Elite, which is an external device that measures color and light emitting from your monitor and then makes software corrections to make sure you are properly displaying color.
We have gotten so many requests to make an episode on monitor calibration that we couldn’t ignore them. We called up Datacolor and asked if they would send us one of their calibrators and sponsor a review, and we are happy they said yes, because this thing really does work. They shipped one over and sponsored this video in 24 hours!
Here is the deal. After running the calibration software on multiple monitors and a laptop, it became obvious via the before/after images that the colors on the monitors in the before were horrible, even on a $1,000 Mac Thunderbolt Display.
Most notably, the reds were washed out and rendered way too much green. This is a big deal, because people’s skin is primarily red, meaning the monitors in our studio have been showing inaccurate colors for years!
Quick Tip: Use the included software to sync multiple monitors together if you are using more than one display.

One more important thing you forgot to mention Aaron, you should let your monitor to run for about 30 minutes before you start the process of calibration...
when monitor matrix reaches designed temperature, then it display the best possible colors, it is pointless to do calibration straight after you turn a monitor on

Good point! We will make sure to do that from now on. The monitors in the video were running for hours before the test luckily.

Absolutely correct on the 30 minute rule. The Spyder5 software actually prompts you with that warning prior to starting the calibration.

It is 100% true. The one of my LCD screen for color grading changes brightness about 5% after 1 hour, then become stable, another one about 10% as well as colors to white point (it become 5% more blue).

I have an older Spider and it's been great. Thanks for the reminder, it's time for me to calibrate again. Love it and thank for your great review of the Spider Elite. It's amazing how off the colours can be so if you want to print your work whether on your own printer or sending it to the lab ... calibrate because you want your file to come out the way you see it on your screen no matter who prints it. Thanks, Aaron, another great one!!

Every two weeks...rain or shine I calibrate my main monitor, a NEC 27" wide gamut with the xrite puck and the NEC Spectraview software. Perfect. Was even able to finally talk one main client into buying a puck and start calibrating their monitors as our arguments over color difference issues was getting exhausting and frustrating. Now we get along great and compliment each other constantly, even share cooking recipes ...and are able to view consistent, matching color files.

I have one of these and it works great. I had an interesting experience with it though, which taught me a lesson. For a while the calibration was making the screen look horribly wrong. I couldn't get it to work right. The ambient light was minimal, and I couldn't figure it out. Finally I realized the problem was the volume control for my speakers. It sat on the desk under the monitor and had a blue light. It wasn't too noticeable to me, but it shined up at a steep angle and projected the light between the monitor and the sensor. Once I shut it off during calibration I've had no problem.

I've been using the colormunki for about three or four years now, it one of the requirements that the Art Institute had for their color course and prior to that I was like you and wouldn't understand why all of the monitors looked different. The colormunki works just like the spyder does and when the new up grade came several months back I was amazed as to how much beter the colors came out after the upgrade. So like you AAron I recommend having one or the other to calibrate one's monitors.

    Nice video, Aaron.
I use a Colormunki on my iMac screen. The last time I calibrated it was two months ago.
I recently returned from a vacation with 4500 images. I was tempted to dive straight in but thought that I would not want to process 4500 images and THEN find they were showing wrong colours.
I re-calibrated and, after just two months, my iMac screen had drifted WAY off.
It's now back on track and I dread to think of having to readjust 4500 images had I not recalibrated the screen.
    Extremely good advice from you.

As well as calibrating your monitor & printer, you should look to calibrating your cameras to produce a Color Profiles for use in Lr & Ps. This ensures that each camera reproduces the same colors. The X-Rite ColorChecker Passport is simple to use on a shoot, then create & apply the profile in LightRoom.

That's interesting that the monitors loose brightness over time. This could explain why I have noticed the printing of my images seem a little darker than I had them in Photoshop. I have calibrated my monitor with the Pro Lab I use for printing which has been great until recently with the prints looking a little darker than I would normally make them. I must recalibrate to solve this problem. Thanks Aarron. Oh yes do more reviews please, it's always good to learn about equipment for Photography.

  • @JonAres
    @JonAres 7 років тому +2

Nice review... one thing not mentioned is the Spyder 5 also takes your ambient (room) lighting into account as well. Super swell. BUT... I wonder what I'm really gaining from calibrating my monitors. (I too have a Spyder 5, after having upgraded from a previous Spyder.) I mean, I can calibrate my monitors until the cows come home (assuming I want them home) but when I post something on G+ and Facebook and Insta, I'm at the mercy of their systems (and the pics come out looking very different). And, Aaron, you mentioned sending work to the client: what if their monitors are all whack? I've had this happen - I get the call that the colors are off, and I have to try to tweak it to look good on their system (not necessarily the client's print house).... so where's the value in calibrating our monitors with fancy-pants stuff if we're not in 100% control of the entire chain of ownership/viewership? Bragging rights that it "looks right on my monitor?"

I'd like to see a tutorial on the end-to-end use of colour calibration. I have a Spyder, and I just turned OFF the colour calibration because I'm finding it more trouble than it's worth.
Example: 3D rendering software gives me a nicely saturated image
I bring it into Photoshop, and it's undersaturated.
I set Photoshop to use the monitor profile, and now it looks the same as my rendering software
I Save for Web and open in my web browser, and now the image is SUPER saturated.
There are workarounds, but so far, I found that turning calibration off is the simplest way to keep the image looking the same in all of my applications.
Feel like I'm missing half the instructions. Once you've calibrated your monitor what is the _correct_ way to set up Photoshop to keep images consist across applications?

I believe that Iphones supports color correction. If so, then you CAN calibrate your smartphone. If not, most phones comes with different screen outputs, called "Dynamic", Vivid" etc.
Use Calman Mobileforge with Calman Colormatch (both are free), to test the various output's accuracy with your Spyder5. Choose the one that comes closest.
For your TV, use e.g. HCFR free calibration software with the Spyder5.

I have been using Datacolor Spyder for years.
It has always given me superb results.
    I wouldn't use anything else.

Can you do a step-by-step how to? I try to calibrate my monitors but on some calibrators that I have come across, they would ask things like white point, screen brightness, etc. Did the data color ask you about this as well? I am guessing the brightness capability between all of your monitors are different, so what number did you set them at? My monitors tend to come out a lot less bright after calibrations. Thanks!

With X-Rite you can actually color calibrate your ios\android devices, however not all applications work , since they cant change internal icc profile for entire phone .

Well then there must be ways to printer settings and may be few things to consider before capturing a picture to make the output much more realistic. Share your knowledge with us Aaron for these matters too and thank you for changing my mind to buy a hardware calibration device instead of software calibration only.

I've owned a spider for a couple of years and my monitor, which is pretty accurate, still benefits from a recalibration every couple of months. There isn't much of a change because I don't wait a long time between calibrations for things to get way out of whack.
(Now I have to figure out if my tablet can be calibrated because I know that puppy is way off.)

hay otros factores que van a influir en la calibracion de los monitores como el color de ropa que emplees debes utilizar colores neutros para que la calibracion que hayas realizado sea correcta

Every time i use a calibrator it washes out my colours and make them look grungy and skins tones more green in their iwnninages they include in the software. I can fire ip a david lechapelle shot, one i have in a book and it's way off or just looks terroble to the eye from before cali too. Both spyders and xrite have done this and i can't find answers anywhere. There's not trusting your eyes and then there less vibrant, murky and green skin tones
