It's a "JIS" screw head - Japanese Industry Standard. Most JIS screws will have a small dimple on the head so you can distinguish them from Phillips. They require a JIS driver. If you have a Japanese bike - these are a must-have in your toolkit. Happy Travels!
@@iPedroMota It’s a learning curve bro, just like checking your oil on a DAILY basis, especially when you’re travelling long distances. Oil starvation is the quickest and easiest way to kill an engine. Three things happen: The oil gets thicker and the contaminants are a greater proportion of the mix, and deposits increase in the oilways - potentially blocking them; The pump struggles to circulate the oil to all the necessary parts of the engine such as the heads, starving the cam bearings and followers; These parts get hotter and wear more quickly. Regular oil changes and maintaining the oil level preserves the life of any engine, and can extend it for decades. It’s a simple rule.
I travel solo normally, but if I were to ride with someone else, I could only wish to be as fortunate as you. Hope you know how lucky you are! Thanks for sharing your travels, and all the best to you both!
Keeping the algorithm active with comments. 0:45 Occasionally I long for the classic foam and mesh often oil dipped reusable air filters. Clean them out and off, recoat them in oil if required and off you go. Pretty sure I've said this before, but I would be happy to see you in more reflective gear. It's hard to buy for someone, but you might end up listing sponsor on some of your apparel? 3:33 I've noticed that some countries and even some jurisdictions require police attendance at specific or even general accidents. Not sure how it is at that Lithuanian incident, but it seemed a ton of pictures and video could have suffice. 7:15 Something I did in the service and in Japan and Korea is fabricate an almost insignificant utilization of space and weight 'Solar Oven' Reused aluminum disposable baking pans and clear plastic to keep the heat in. Works fantastic even when it's cold (well, assuming you have sunlight). Hey, you can acquire good microbes too.
Welcome back to Poland, Pedro ;) You are about 5 months late with giving us updates about your travel I see. Keep us up to date mate, I got addicted to your videos. Cheers Pedro.
It took this video to confirm the trip was filmed in summer. It was the pizza on the stones as an open air hot plate that finally gave it away. Merry Christmas Pedro and Mariska from the Sierra Mountains in Madrid.
Thank's Pedro! I had forgotten Transalp's drinking problem and hadn't check my 650's oil level in a wile ("just" 3 or 4 thousand kilimeters ago 😟)... guess what... just threw in 2 liters of oil and didn't became full 🥲! Thanks to you I didn't blew my engine! Love your videos man! keep up the good work! Ciao!
New to the Chanel saw your video of 3 points Ukraine Belorussian and Poland. That was trippy. On those sandy roads. Never rode someone on the back on a road like that. You are a great rider. And you have a pretty lady to go traveling with. Good for you. How you like that bike? What is it? I think I need one already have a Harley, Ducati but it’s been years since I had a enduro! They are fun! Don Los Angeles California
My Honda ST1100 has travelled 180,000 kms in its life. It used to use/drink semi synthetic oil until I started using full mineral oil and now no oil loss.
You're not the first I hear that from. Myself I had a mighty scare with mineral oil once in Australia at around 110/120K, like it had 'evaporated' in no time.
@Pedro Mota apart from the obvious worn piston rings or leaks possibility I did have an engine block years ago pressurising cause oil to be pushed past the rings. Cause was a blocked engine breather (PCV valve), but that was a car.
LOL, "Honda Phillips head." In other words a JIS screwdriver and JIS screw. JIS screwdrivers are da bomb...they quite often work better in American Phillips screws than some Phillips drivers do as well. I keep lots of 'em around. "The difference is in the leading angle of the point of the driver. Phillips bits have a larger angle and therefore don't bottom out in the JIS screws, causing slippage."
I remember getting ice creme at that gas station in Poland on a trip going from Lithuania to Poland. We started in Germany and flew to Lithuania; I wish we drove the whole way.
Next time, good ride out there as you've seen. Btw I was craving really bad one of those Polish gas station hotdogs the other day. Beats mcdonalds and the likes any day.
Had a fzr1000 , first bike, she loved oil too, like 1 liter every 1000 km, terrible having to pack oil for every trip 😄 glad to ser youre stil riding😄👍
ha ha yes i was on my transalp 600v on a portugal and spain tour and woke up after a night on the beer and said ok i better check the oil and i nearly had a heart attack haha no bloody oil . so i had to put in 2ltrs . omg . lesson learned check oil ha ha . ride safe my man . ps. hi from poole , dorset uk .
I think it's part and parcel for those owning a TA or OG-AT with 75.000+ kilometers on the clock. It's scary eh. A peculiar one for me was in Australia I think, bike at a good angle while front was higher up in the sand noticing "why's the clutch so sticky, why's the cable still slack?" She got a good refill that day.
1:44 @Pedro Mota Those are not “Honda Philips heads”. They are JIS (Japanese Industry Standard) heads. All Japanese bikes have them. Ride safe you two.
Well who does not have this one friend with a drinking problem :). My alp 600 1992 also drinks a lot of oil but only if I ride it over 65-70mph. If I am riding 60mph it uses almost nothing. I replaced piston rings and valve seals last winter but that did not fix drinking problem much. Should have done the bore but the cylinders looked ok. Maybe next time as this one I will keep for longer. Love the bike. You are riding 2 people with luggage so I guess this kind of oil consumption might be assumed normal. Honda in manual says that up to 1l is normal oil consumption :).
* glugglug * Small engine rebuild on Alp did solve everything though that included new oversized piston rings and pistons (I think, been a while), cleaning the engine heads and cutting out the valve seats, new valves, new seals and new oil chains while in there. Cylinders looked good so nothing done there.
Happy holidays my friend, when are you going to finish your South American adventure. You got cut short because of winter. If you ever get to Miami or Italy you have an invitation my brother.
You know what, I was thinking something didnt sound right when you lowered the camera to beside the engine. Was probably the sound of not enough oil ! Enjoyed the vid as always .
Yeah right, shit happens any time. Looks like the car was turning on to the main road but it didn't look like a high speed crash since the bike wasn't scattered everywhere and the group of people weren't standing 10 meters further down the road.
First of all appreciate the Christmas gift mate, thanks for that. Second, that's terrible modern design but no way did I expect it to be like that on the 650 already (had a look at the schematics now). I remember slagging of a bit a Ducati I worked on in Bolivia, moving heaven and earth to get to the air filter. But Honda doing the same thing, damn.
@@iPedroMota No worries! It was my pleasure, has been interesting to see Europe on the TA, something I'll have to get around to one of these days! Yeah they moved the air filter to make room for a under seat storage, kinda of handy for tools and stuff but not worth the sacrifice of having an air filter under the thank 😂. It's not the worst to get at, you just unscrew the side fairings and then you can get it off that way but still takes 1 h or so. The Japanese are known for making things dead simple but I guess even they make mistakes sometimes 😂
@@novicetheaf It’s intentional. Design briefs now include ways of increasing the owner’s dependence upon servicing by the dealership - which of course is one of the major incentives for dealers to take on franchises. It’s a simple business model, but it removes the owner from the equation more and more. Having said all that, motorcycle owners have changed as a breed over the past few years. Most don’t even ride bikes for necessity, but only for leisure, and then only a few miles per year. So, I guess the model fits many riders, just not real ones. Ride safe. Peace
But the flip side of the air filter under the seat is it's less likely to get dirty or suck water. I honestly prefer it this way. It's not that difficult to take the tank off and you have to do it less often
Good point, I was wondering that myself since on the 600 the filter can get soaked and/or absolutely clogged with mud. This 96 model has a slightly longer and thinner 'snorkel' at a different angle and it isn't an improvement over the wider shorter one on the 1991 model. Still can get dirty as when offroading.
Couldn't figure out who was the injured motorcyclist in that accident. Those European intersections are as scary as the crazy US highway merging on the side, but these are worse, because a vehicle will jump in front of you out of the blue and bam, you're now gelatin . They should really put a stop light there or something.

Jep You ar so on the point. Not many people know about Japanese bikes and the JIS screws and so JIS drivers, they just killing the heads.
✋Guilty, you should see the airfilter screws on Alp

Hello Pedro and girlfriend (sorry I can't remember her name) just want to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Ciao form Rome/Italy

Luv from Oz.

Excellent episode Pedro in fact they get better and better since Mariska joined with you, I think she makes you more rounded somehow if I may say so.

I just bought my first transalp 600 two months ago! Great machines! I had old tenere and xt’s before but the v-twin is growing on me
You did it it! Well done, you'll be able to pick out that sound anywhere soon enough.
Looking good pedro! Damn those are some abs. Nice to see you guys in the heat while its -8 here in Maastricht

Clear day, dry, wide roads and still the bike goes down..."it happens"!

the japaneese phillips are JIS japaneese industrial standard, great videos keep travelling.,
I changed all the screw on my TA (except fairing) with hexagonal head screws, they dont strip and i think they look better :P
Your iron butt home ride. Happy New Year, Günter/Nürnberg
Happy new year to come Gunther aus Nurnberg, let's see what happens
Great idea to clean the filter like that, sadly with my TA 650 you have to remove the tank to access the filter

Hi fun fact the church you like my grandad did the altar over there. jealous about motorbike!!! don’t mention girlfriend😊 good job with the video
Guys I have the feeling that nothing on the world could surprise you. Like the video+stay safe!
Can you see the oil burning as blue smoke from the exhaust ?
No, the only smoke briefly is when she's starting up when cold.
You need to get a set of JIS screwdrivers Pedro, I think it stands for Japanese Industry Standard. They fit all Japanese screws beautifully 👌
Do you check the oil on the side stand? It should be on the central stand to my knowledge
No, I straighten the bike up before measuring
hi from nyc

Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS) and not Phillips!
as a Polish man, usually 'Big Scare in Poland' ..... puts a person in the ground
I hear you. This was more of scare that could put someone 'on the ground' (if unlucky in the ground too still).
*yawn* lmao
Hey so how do u pay for all ur travels new to your page and just got my passport from the USA shiuld I transport a bike from the us and just wing it how do u budget everything
Jis heads....both the screws and the people leaving a dead bike on a live highway.
What a charming girl:). I mean backpack. :)
Hi bro iam from india
" deeese nutts"? Or maybe not.
Poor bike.😣 All those clowns waiting until it gets hit again. Good idea not to get involved.
Your girlfriend is super cute, I like her🫠🙂
You go to war zone ?
Türkçe çeviri yok 👎
they are JIS heads, Japanese industry Standard, you can buy the correct drivers and therefore not ruin the screws in a Jap motor
