- ...is one who saves your butt.
Actually, he's priceless.
Meyerhoff also demonstrates the importance of practicing without stirrups (a bit of an understatement). He has commented on this ride (see text comments) saying
"This was his first Intermediate horse trial. He was more than ready. And I was quite confident he could do it. What I think happened was the horses cantered up the hill then when it was time to take off they then saw what was on the other side which caused a green horse to hesitate and loose their focus. Smooth Rider aka Odin saved us both. The rider in front of us fell and others before had problems. The fence was then removed. He got lots of cookies and kisses when we got home."

The horse is just like 'i have no time for your problems, i have a course to finish' xD
you just made my day XD
Yes 😁
Horse is like "I got your back kid!". What a great horse!
That horse has heart.
Oh dear there are some ignorant people commenting, the rider did nothing wrong the horse just didn't jump high enough, even if he had kept his heels down or didn't kick he would still have gone over the fence the same way, the jockey did bloody well to stay on, most would have fallen off. We all make mistakes including our animals, its the people that always have something to say that are normally the ones that are shit in the saddle.
well said
Seriously, this guy was gone, nearly long gone. How both he and the horse recovered is practically miraculous. Great skill, great courage on the part of both. And that horse is just a total crackerjack. Superb!
When no - stirrup november comes in handy xD
I know right! Like who cares about legs so sore you can barely stand up!
Only one thing to say...worth his weight in gold.
One of the calmest, most spectacular recoveries I've ever seen by both horse & rider!
Such great teamwork... I love how the rider pushed himself up by the horse's neck in the second jump and the horse went going. Excellent portrayal of what horse and rider teamwork looks like. Well done :D
What I got from this video: a horse that knows his job and is incredibly athletic + a rider who, despite a crappy moment, knows how to keep his balance! Great job to both of you!
Holy crap that was amazing, I thought for sure the horse was gonna fall. And a very nice "stay-on" from the rider. Very good job to both of u!
Great teamwork with mutual trust and well trained horse who enjoys the sport. Now what I don't get, and it almost puts me off YT, is how people like to be so agressive and negative in their comments here? Do they want to show off knowledge or what? They must be unhappy to take such relish in criticizing others in public. Congratulations, Mayerhoff, please just ignore the badmouthers. Real eventers will stand behind you.
Well to be honest, any video on youtube that has a horse in it anywhere regardless of the content has comments saying the owner is abusive somehow or something is wrong with blah blah blah. The majority of people who comment either haven't been around horses or aren't very good at what they do.
Such a brave and honest horse!
wow what a great rider and FANTASTIC horse =]
Siii
What an honest horse and what a great ride, job well done to both!
It is a rare thing to see so much "heart", "try" and "honesty" in one animal. What an exceptional horse. Thank you for sharing. He has certainly won over this heart, for sure.
What a patient and good horse for not bucking or freaking out while the person was on his neck man I want that horse!
Exactly. Every horse I've been on has dumped me if I landed on his neck after a messed up jump. I'm still amazed when I watch this.
It says a lot about YOU as a rider that you recovered yourself so well following what could have been disastrous! That's a fabulous horse you have there, and quite the impressive save on both of your parts! :)
@Phoebe Williams Are you actually joking or have you genuinely completely missed the point of this video? "A million dollar horse is one who saves your butt. Actually, he's priceless." The fact that this horse got over those fences, clear, was honest enough to jump them without losing his rider and to lift with the guy's weight up his neck is what makes it a million dollar horse. Also I'm more than sure that this horse also doesn't "move like that" in perfect conditions.
00:04 this is why l'm not a big fan of cross country.. many horses break their legs because those obstacles don't fall when you touch it..
But this video is adorable.. he was excited kept on going!
Well done also for staying on!
but many horses are breaking there legs at normal show jumping to. because the get the fences between there legs
Horses break their legs in the field I guess we shouldn’t turn them out ever again
Yikes, that was a close call!! It's good to see the horse and rider trusted each other so much to continue, regardless of the lack of contact, stirrups and seat! Fantastic rider - he did so well to stay on, you rarely see riders of the top level sitting something like that! xx
AMAZING Horse, so honest, he saved that rider's butt!!
That horse did everything he could do to save that mans life! It just shows how compassionate these horses are :) and we need to show them the most love and respect.
Now this is the kind of horse that deserves our respect. I can't number the opportunities it had to refuse/run out....especially after the close fall it had. This horse is worth its weight in gold PLUS a million dollars!!!
The log rolling slightly forward was one of the many things that went right to advert disaster for this talented and lucky pair.
Love how he gives the horse a rub before pushing himself back into the saddle and gives a bit of a grin.
Finally, don't you just hate when you can't find that darn stirrup? This is one thing that is easier in a Western saddle. ;)
horses.......they have saved me in so many ways
Not like this this was a world class save. My God what an AMAZ I NG ride.
Horses rule, they will save you if your mental, they will carry you if you have physical problems, I tied myself to my horse ...he slowly dragged me home after a fall The spirit of the horse.
Bravo Just an an unbelievable ride.
A M A Z I N G H O R S E. Thank you for sharing this. I'm in Va about 20 miles outside Middleburg. Your site rocks!
Awesome recovery & freak....that horse deserves a medal. How much does that horse trust the rider & vice-versa that the horse would do anything for the dude.....awesome!!! Yeah as Raspberry said just wanting to please! Shows a happy well loved & cared for horse
Did you see the look of amazement on the rider's face? Priceless!
Yes a priceless horse! I am just as impressed with the rider! Notice that he never loses his focus on the next fence - even when he is sitting IN FRONT OF THE SADDLE. Kudos from a fellow eventer!
What an honest horse!!! Well done from both of them :)
That is a Million Dollar Horse!!! you must be proud to ride him.
I think you should have to pass an equine IQ exam before posting negative comments. AMAZING RIDE! AMAZING HORSE.
your horse is an amazing and bold champion.
And you deserve a medal for that ride
That's a well trained horse. Most horses would just stop or duck out. But this one is trained to go straight and jump whatever comes up. Made my day. c;
and thats what makes xc so thrilling the trust that both horse and rider have in each other and the willingness of participation :)
Wow, that horse deserves the horse of the century award. I wish my horse was that honest.
Very well sat at the first part! Anyone who's had a horse do that will know how hard that is to sit - let alone recover so well and quickly! Well done!
What a bond this horse and rider have, that horse is simply mazing.
Absolutely amazing! Such an honest horse and an awesome rider, no stirrups and no reins, wow!
How this rider stayed on is beyond me! what a save. what a fantastic horse!
WOW!!! Just WOW!!! Absolutely superb horse, he is incredible, he goes straight for the jumps with absolutely NO guidance from his rider (not the rider's fault, he was doing a great job just staying on the horse), it is clear this horse knows his job and even more clear is that he LOVES his job. What is also clear is that this horse has had a great training experience and he and his rider are a true testament to teamwork. Fantastic riding and fantastic horse.
I can't believe he got out of that! What a quick thinker! And a lovely, lovely jump!
What a Freakiin AMMAAZZZIIINGGG HORSE !!!!!!!!!!!!! Now he's a saint for doing that and it just shows how great and athletic and trusting/reliable horse he/she is ! I LOVE IT ! Great job to the rider for having the ability and strength to stay on ! Congrats (:
Ruth Mceleney Don't mean to be rude but if he was a bad rider he would've probably fallen off....just saying. Everyone misses a distance once and a while
That horse has a lot of power, and the rider has amazing balance!! Good save on both sides.
When a horse truely loves what he is doing and loves his rider this is wbat happens. He knew what he has to do and did it. Wow well done to the pair!
Wow ! What a lucky rider ! and his horse avoid barely the fall, then took all in his "hands" to jump the other fences ! Excellent.
This is amazing! What a sweet horse to save your butt! You rode that well too. Good recovery.
He looked tired I evented for years and he has a big heart to keep going with his rider all over his back out of balance. Cudo's to this guy he was a great ride.
Super impressive! Looks like the horse was pretty exhausted but absolutely REFUSED to let it beat him...he was DETERMINED TO FINISH STRONG and made it happen! :) Well done to both an amazing horse and rider!
amazing horses and horsemanship pays off, now this is what a ideal horse and rider look like.
Wow! That was impressive from both the horse and rider. Amazingly well stuck from the rider and amazingly honest horse - point, kick and go! What a great partnership!
That horse has a champion heart.
so much respect to both horse and rider, what a talented pair!
That rider is a great rider. You never know whats going to happen when you're out doing cross country so he handled it perfectly.
Assuming you ride, you cant say that you've never had anything like this happen. He probably handled it better than alot of other people.
That rider has got SOOMEE balance, and that horse is amazing for carrying on and not falling!
OMG! My heart stopped watching this. Was certain you both were going down. Incredible HEART on the part of BOTH horse and rider.
Absolutely amazing you came through *together* and stayed on course.
Yes, he's a million dollar horse all right.
Adding to my favorites.
Thanks for posting.
5 STARS!
Wow! It looked like you both were goners... and while you're still on his neck wondering why you're not in pieces on the ground he's got his ears forward thinking about the next jump!
Nice save to you both!
AMAZING
The horse and rider must trust each other so much. They make an awesome team.
One of my favorite videos! Inspiration plus!!
I wouldn't have lasted a second! Two words : Saint Horse. I hope he enjoys the horse. You only get one special horse in a life time.
i cant believe that horse stayed on his/her feet great horse even better friend
Wow....I'm sure that horse got extra treats and a good massage after that save!!! I love it....:)
Wow the horse had an amazing recovery. The rider did an awesome job staying in the saddle.
This is why I always pratice without stirrups. You never know what can happen.
that was riding!! all because he was sitting back and didnt throw the horse at the fence! hats off to him! and an honest horse!!
This is why I learned bareback before even touching a saddle. That background has saved me from potential falls like these countless times.
WHAT. A. HORSE!! And a "well-sat badge" awarded to the rider!
WOW. that's all i can say, on both the horse and rider's part. gave me chills.
Wonderful horse. Trying to get your stirrup back when you're galloping and can't seem to catch the stirrup is the most goddamn frustrating thing ever haha. That horse is an angel!
wow such an honest brave horse!!! i would be so proud if it were mine!!! its like he was taking care of the rider and kept on going... he could do a whole cross country course by himself with no rider!!
That IS a very honest horse. Good training
Priceless horse...priceless rider...BRAVO!
You caught some amazing footage to share with us. I've watched this several times now and just can't say enough positives for this pair. The rider never once grabbed those reins, he kept his cool in the worst of situations and let his horse carry him. And what a HORSE!
If you know this person send greetings his way from us in cyberspace. I'd sure like to shake his hand and give that horse a hero's welcome. :~)
Great horse and AMAZING rider. He jumped without stirips!
Wow. He just muscled his way over those jumps. No momentum to help - it was all in him. And the rider - that was an amazing save sir. Kudos.
Omg, greaaaaat rider, and the horse ... he has a big heart, he is so honnest ! wooo ..
Wow I would have been on the ground a while back. That is amazing howthe rider just stuck with him and kept that horse going no matter what was happening. thats just amazing.
is that you? that was an EXTREMELY honest horse :) and a good rider for staying on and getting off the horse's back as much as possible and not dangling off his face as he took care of you there :)
Kept his ears up the whole time....and the horse did :)
That's why practicing without stirrups can save you in the end! What an incredible horse! :D
Wow what an honest horse :)
Really well sat!
Wow Buzz!
Your horse has a heart of gold and nads of steel, with the bravery to save the both of you.
The slo mo reveals you both should'a been down for the count.. bess take extra permo care of your amazing equine because it difintely is deserving
that horse is amazing he saved his rider and kept doing his job even thou his rider was unable to direct him. he is a million dollor horse!
He jumped the second jump out the saddle, on the neck with no reins, excellent rider and clever horse! Didn't bat an eyelid, flick an ear or miss a stride! :)
brilliant horse, really is priceless! he just keeps fighting for his rider, what a star!
Now that's a genuine horse bless his heart
I bet the rider couldn't believe it was happening! Awesome pair.
I like how in the water Robert says: "C'mon baby!" and the horse does as his name implies.:)
what a horse! brilliant riding too, love how he pats the horse after the second fence.
i wish i could see the horses lower legs there and the hoofs -to really see how he did that! Its nearly miraculous! This horse has amazing coordination combined with brains thats for sure!
The guy was completely on the horse's neck; AMAZING that he stayed on, even MORE amazing that the horse cleared that fence without being able to use his neck for balance...WOW!!! Plus the horse getting his feet underneath him over the first fence to begin with- 99% of horses I've seen do that have flipped, with not so good results.
omg that horse has the biggest heart. my pony did that but not at advased level. lol at GMHA he triped down the hill and came back up and we had to jump a jump 2 strides later and i had no sturrips and no rains. i just held on and he did it perfectly.
DUDE! That was badass.
Someones got a superglue seat and a horse with a heart of gold. Haha
That was truly amazing. I mean, jumping is pretty stupid, but THAT was amazing. The horse almost seriously injured itself and the rider, but then saved himself and KEPT GOING.
Great way to keep it together, very nice honest horse! Hopefully your next intermediate event goes smoother! Good luck and keep having fun :)
I watch this before I go to my jumping lessons, his leg is impeccable
thats very impressive that you and your horse did not fall and he just kept going with no hesitation. wanna train my horse to do that.
What a good boy! Bless his big heart.
what an incredible horse, well done for staying on aswell!
This is great! Such an honest horse! I would be so proud!
