  • For this 14-inch school bus (skoolie) roof raise, we show how we put the 18 gauge steel skin on the curved rear corners and on the sidewalls.
    In a prior episode of this project, we talked about our approach and cut plan...then we removed the side rub rail rivets. Now that we've installed the sidewall skin, with the rub rails reattached, you can see how nicely this hides the seams and makes the whole thing look much more "factory like".

    You sure have informative videos! I am so glad that I've found your channel. I don't have a bus, but I do have a Transit van that I have converted to an RV. I like accurate and precision work and you do both!

    5200 is no joke you won't have to worry about it coming back apart or leaking. Nice metal work.

      Thanks...and, yes, 3M 5200 is about as permanent as I have found. It's not cheap, but we use it on all of our raises and other places we want joined permanently. I really appreciate your kind comment and support - as a new UA-cam poster, that is very motivating.

    Looking good!
    I would also consider the 5200 preventing any rubbing metal and the resulting noise.

    Have you tried using clico place holder rivets. airplane builders use them . No ripples no gaps, perfect alignment.

    about the sealant ruining cleeco's : i read a book about a guy using cleeco's and glue on a racecar wing , he dropped those cleeco's intoo a tin can with acethone , and just left them in there untill he needed them , gotten them clean even when covered in the goop

    I'll make sure to show my husband this. We are to do a roof raise for a friend and we've never done one. She wants the raise to be cut below the window :)
    We need all the info we can get! Thanks for videoing your work.

      Right on, Missy! We've done several roof raises and one trolly top raise...but I've never been one to record what we're doing...until now. I've uploaded videos on each step of this roof raise and the one on planning the cut might be helpful, too.
      Let me know how yours goes and feel free to reach out if you have questions.

    Thank you so much for this video! By far the most informative and well-thought out roof raise series I've found. Would you recommend hot rolled or cold rolled steel for the sheeting?

    What type of sheet metal are you using for this? Is it just regular carbon steel sheet metal? 1018? Galvanized? A36/A500 type Structural?

    I've been searching everywhere for the correct rivet. My criteria were 1/4" diameter stainless rivets but NONE of the suppliers have CLOSED END rivets in the 1/4" size. (They carry the exact item in 3/16, but not 1/4.) I thought it would be smarter to use closed end to make it more waterproof. Any reason you don't use closed end, or ideas why that doesn't seem to exist?

    • @RollingLiving
      @RollingLiving  2 роки тому +1

      Actually, I thought I shared that I only use closed end stainless rivets. It might be in another video in that series...but I do show the difference. I drill out the holes and use 1/4-inch closed end rivets, so they fit tightly and the head size matches the factory bus rivet diameters
      I get rives from Jay-Cee Rivets (rivetsonline.com) or Byler Rivet. Both carry 1/4-inch closed end stainless rivets.
