Good work. I've got a Conti 650 and got rid of the ridiculously heavy pipes and mufflers straight up replacing with a 2 into 1 and the difference is unbelievable. Thanks for the videos I'll be watching through out the build.
This is going to be an interesting series. I saved a few kilos by changing to Hitchcock's silencers: those stock silencer/cats are monsters. Also, The YSS front fork kit and Z series rear shocks shaved off some weight for me. I will keep my centre stand and certainly the front fender extender as it keeps my oil cooler clean. Carry on.......😁
Great to see this video with its weight reduction agenda. That has been my main goal with my 650cc Continental GT (plus saddle height reduction). Please continue to weigh stuff, nothing quiet so frustrating as to watch a video like this without some actual numbers to contemplate. I'm very much looking forward to the rest of this series. My recommendations for weight reduction are to replace the exhaust system with a TEC Bikes Parts 2 into 1, change the 12V battery from the original lead acid to a LiFePO4 (but not if the bike might ever experiences temperatures of 0C (32F) or below) and a myriad other little changes.
It’s not really part of the agenda, just something I thought I’d take notice of as I go through the project. It’ll be interesting to see how much is saved. It’s something I didn’t do on the other two bikes
On springs like those for side and center stands if you put washers or even coins in between the coils you can stretch the spring out to remove it its also handy for putting them back on.
saw an interesting tip on center stands: remove then use a long bolt or 3/8 ratchet extender rod to temporarily remount the center stand when you want to use it in the garage
So far I have done the same things but kept the centre stand. I chose CRG bar end mirrors and S&S slip ons. I have RE logo 3M vinyl stickers on the fork legs which reflect white light. By the way you can just unplug the rear taillight and pass the connector through the rear mudguard extension for those watching. You font have to cut it. I’m slowly improving my bike with the touring seat version 2. I’m just going for a good old standard style bike rather than a street tracker of cafe racer. Interested to see how your bike finishes up.
I'll be watching your progress on this one! Nice bike to work on and add your own touches to. The stripped back look should suit it well. (End of the day, it's your bike and you should do what you want with it) A crackin project.
Good timing! I just rescued an Int 650 that needs some TLC. It's been sitting outside in Tennessee U.S. and the weather is starting to show. I now have it in my garage down in Texas. Now it's waiting for a good cleaning. Hoping your vids will give me some ideas as how I want it to go.

I dropped my Himalayan at the dealer for a warranty issue and made the fatal error of sitting on an Interceptor. I kept telling myself, no test rides no test rides, I've already got 2 bikes. I broke down and took it for a test ride. I now have 3. 😄
It’s a great project, I’ve enjoyed the process as well, can’t recommend the booster plug and open air box mods enough, also the YSS suspension on the front is a must. Been tinkering away at my bike for the past two years and loving it!
really interesting that just those few parts alone is 4.5kg. Possibly 15kg less in total than when you'll do the rest. Keep measuring that, I'm looking forward to see that

Saved weight and cleaned up the looks already 👍. Just my opinion, but I’d leave the hacksaw and the grinder in the tool box. If all of your modifications are “reversible”, when you go to sell it you can hand the new owner all the “old” parts, because he/she might have different tastes as to modifications from stock, and having all the parts can up the desirability….and selling price. (And yes, that comes from experience 😉.)
Hey Tony, where you removed the plastic mudguard bolts, what I’ve done in the past is either get some black rubber grommets or just spray painted the bolts with a rattle can. It just covers those bloody holes! Regarding the handrail bolt, just buy a shorter bolt. Aesthetically these little fixes just improve the look & take your eye away from the bleedin obvious!👍🏼😎🇦🇺 I was looking to buy this same RE in the Baker Express colours. Good choice.

Great start, Tony. Keen to see how this progresses. I really hope you change the colour, I reckon it would look great in a matt grey/black scheme, maybe a matt grey tank with a Man Cave Moto design airbrushed over the top in matt black.
I removed a bunch of weight for a different look.. repainted the fenders and filled the holes with chrome fasteners, replaced the stock seat with a single saddle and custom aluminum carrier painted black.. looked pretty rad. After a few weeks of feeling like a bike molester, I put it back to stock. 🤔

A couple of observations: you talk of changing those side panels. I can't say if it's the style you're looking for, but they offer a whole host of handy leather bags on eBay and elsewhere to replace them that don't look bad at all, and will give you just a little room to store this and that. As for those original covers, perhaps you may already be aware that those full "Interceptor 650" panels are sort of sought after here in the USA, where we only get "INT650" ones, since Honda had already trademarked the "Interceptor" name for its own line of motorcycles. So, you could probably flog them on eBay easily enough. Same with the center stand assembly. It seems quite a few of the GT model owners, which doesn't come with one, would like such a stand all the same. At least it comes up on the Forums now and then. I believe it's a pretty much straightforward bolt-on fit. If you go for the bar-end mirrors, like those lovely "Made in England" Halcyons, it may interest you to learn that Hitchcocks sells nice little blanking plugs to tidy up those threaded holes for those OEM "rabbit ears". I believe Stewart Fillingham showcased them and the mirrors on his UA-cam channel. You talk of painting the bike, so I wonder why you may have paid extra for that 'Baker Express' color scheme if you were only planning to paint over it anyhow. But carry on, and count me subscribed.

I have a set of bar-end mirrors now which are interesting, but I'm not going to fit them until I change the bars. I didn't buy the bike brand new, so no premium for the Baker Express paint job. Thanks, neither really. If somebody bolted it on at the factory, it can be unbolted in my garage ;) I've got a rough vision that is getting concentrated as I go along, I just want the finished bike to look as unfussy as possible.
You've only got to hold it a few more days John. Part 2 is coming on Friday! I've been waiting on parts and i'm filming as I go along, but hopefully it'll start coming together quicker now...
a lot of people say fit hitchccocks exhausts, i think if you shortened the standard cans they would look great, just cut out about 10 inches and replace end caps keeping the same slope, there good exhausts just too much of them. IMO,
@@theradiantchild thanks radchills. The real problem with euro 5(when released) was RE had a dud batch across the world with a wrong map on the ecu. Apparently RE advised about this to all dealers to do the remapping at pd but my dealer never received any comms. RE came online flashed my ecu and guess what.. it was a different motorcycle altogether and did not cut out once. Since then I have ridden 4000km with no cut out what so ever. Its the same grease and the relays hahaha. Recently the engine light came on and was fixed with a new IAT sensor in less than 2 hours under warranty hats off to my dealer.
Tony me old mate, i dont want to put a spanner in the works but.......on the left hand side (as your sitting on the bike ) you will need to put a larger (in diameter) washer on the shock because the shock will eventually slide off (i know because it happened to me !!! , i nearly shat my pants !!!) At least in Germany its already at this stage not road legal anymore, when you start cutting the frame you put it into a piece of expensive junk. You turn it from a two seater into a one man machine by shortening frame and seat. But everybody must know what he is doing :)
@@skymningforelsket1302 well, we have great customizers, and we developed motorcycles ;) He said he may is going to cut the frame in his next video. Anyhow he seems to be a responsible guy knowing what he does. We would have to make a complete new technical inspection by authorities. It is sometimes annoying but on the other hand it guarantees quality of work

Not wearing a seatbelt won't impact others, unless you become a human projectile. No annual MC inspections in the PNW where I live.. Maybe older bikes. I suppose if you do cause an accident with a modified bike and it was decided your modifications had made it unsafe, you could be sued. That's the american way. lol 😄
I know I'm being negative, so apologies if this seems like a bit of a downer: I tried similar things with a Continental GT, but gave up on it in the end, for 3 reasons: The rear tyre width is limited by the narrow width of the frame and the swing-arm. 130 is much too skinny for me and the bike seemed nervous enough in the corners and generally not a pleasant ride. I don't think the cross-ply tyres helped - even after switching to Avons! Also, the engine (for a GT "cafe racer" style - with the added "GT" extra cost "weight saving" of no centre stand) is a bit too gutless (with less power than a Honda 500). Mine had Lextek pipes and open air filter too, with proper clip-ons. And I'm no speed demon either - it did sound good though. Also, the bike did not seem put together very well (i.e. screws on instrument switch-gear easily stripped their plastic threads, moisture in the clocks and the beginnings of alu, steel and fastener corrosion on a new garaged bike). Brakes seemed grabby, yet had no feel, even post recall. Anyway, good luck with your build and I hope you can ignore my damning appraisal of these bikes' lamentable handling and power delivery capabilities, or resolve them in your tinkerings, while avoiding the pit-falls and traps of individualising your bike from the TEK parts catalogue, like TMF did on his 15k example.

@@mancavemoto Thanks for your reply! I was after looks over performance too, but, as you say, it's a heavy bike - my one didn't like bends and I couldn't really get the bike to potter nicely. The shortening of the rear hoop I've seen done before; I guess since that horizontal strut does appear too long with the grab rail removed (and with a seat hump in my case too). But removal makes the bike look like a "wall of death" bike, highlighting the very short wheelbase. It also means removing the rear mudguard and lights and number plate. (The "dream" bike in your pic has no indicators, licence plate, or reflector - and a taller, rather than wider rear tyre, that looks like it would foul the new lower guard.) This was a critical decision for me, since it looks bad either way, and hacking at the frame would mean I couldn't sell on the bike as easily. Glad you have your wits about you , so I'll watch your upgrade efforts with interest: Aesthetic decisions are all personal value judgements after all, so perhaps some pigs should wear lipstick!

What you have simply achieved so far is basic but looks cleaner already. I do love the Baker Express as it is. Please don’t do what TMF did & spend squillions on a great looking classic.

That is the way to go with this bike,no point in chasing power numbers,focus on weight numbers 👍

Funny enough , test rode one yesterday, was quite impressed wasn't what i was expecting....

When I took my standard exhaust off I was staggered at how heavy they are.
Apparently 5 or 6 kilos per silencer due to the cat being part of it
They have steel surrounded by aluminum for a reason hope you don't get 3rd degree burns .

Thanks, neither really. If somebody bolted it on at the factory, it can be unbolted in my garage ;) I've got a rough vision that is getting concentrated as I go along, I just want the finished bike to look as unfussy as possible.

I have screwed the bolts back on the front main fender to cover up the holes
a lot of people say fit hitchccocks exhausts, i think if you shortened the standard cans they would look great, just cut out about 10 inches and replace end caps keeping the same slope, there good exhausts just too much of them. IMO,
Don't forget that all the golden pinstripes on the RE tank and bike are hand painted..

Replace relays with higher quality relays and clean all the white dielectric grease out with contact cleaner .
@@theradiantchild thanks radchills. The real problem with euro 5(when released) was RE had a dud batch across the world with a wrong map on the ecu. Apparently RE advised about this to all dealers to do the remapping at pd but my dealer never received any comms. RE came online flashed my ecu and guess what.. it was a different motorcycle altogether and did not cut out once. Since then I have ridden 4000km with no cut out what so ever. Its the same grease and the relays hahaha. Recently the engine light came on and was fixed with a new IAT sensor in less than 2 hours under warranty hats off to my dealer.
I sub'd b/c I think this will be a good series. I'm interested to see ideas about how to get the weight down.

Tony me old mate, i dont want to put a spanner in the works but.......on the left hand side (as your sitting on the bike ) you will need to put a larger (in diameter) washer on the shock because the shock will eventually slide off (i know because it happened to me !!! , i nearly shat my pants !!!)

Thanks, but I have put a wider one one, it’s just a bit larger than the mounting point. I’ll most likely change the shocks anyway at some point.

Loved this one. But having that, TMF did the same thing as well. Except when he went for more advanced modifications for the bike.

I don’t get it. The bike isn’t that heavy and the weight savings negligible?
It’s 202kg dry, which isn’t light, and as I mention in the video the weight shedding isn’t overly important, but it will make a difference.

At least in Germany its already at this stage not road legal anymore, when you start cutting the frame you put it into a piece of expensive junk.
You turn it from a two seater into a one man machine by shortening frame and seat. But everybody must know what he is doing :)

Not wearing a seatbelt won't impact others, unless you become a human projectile. No annual MC inspections in the PNW where I live.. Maybe older bikes. I suppose if you do cause an accident with a modified bike and it was decided your modifications had made it unsafe, you could be sued. That's the american way. lol 😄
I know I'm being negative, so apologies if this seems like a bit of a downer: I tried similar things with a Continental GT, but gave up on it in the end, for 3 reasons: The rear tyre width is limited by the narrow width of the frame and the swing-arm. 130 is much too skinny for me and the bike seemed nervous enough in the corners and generally not a pleasant ride. I don't think the cross-ply tyres helped - even after switching to Avons! Also, the engine (for a GT "cafe racer" style - with the added "GT" extra cost "weight saving" of no centre stand) is a bit too gutless (with less power than a Honda 500). Mine had Lextek pipes and open air filter too, with proper clip-ons. And I'm no speed demon either - it did sound good though. Also, the bike did not seem put together very well (i.e. screws on instrument switch-gear easily stripped their plastic threads, moisture in the clocks and the beginnings of alu, steel and fastener corrosion on a new garaged bike). Brakes seemed grabby, yet had no feel, even post recall. Anyway, good luck with your build and I hope you can ignore my damning appraisal of these bikes' lamentable handling and power delivery capabilities, or resolve them in your tinkerings, while avoiding the pit-falls and traps of individualising your bike from the TEK parts catalogue, like TMF did on his 15k example.

@@mancavemoto Thanks for your reply! I was after looks over performance too, but, as you say, it's a heavy bike - my one didn't like bends and I couldn't really get the bike to potter nicely. The shortening of the rear hoop I've seen done before; I guess since that horizontal strut does appear too long with the grab rail removed (and with a seat hump in my case too). But removal makes the bike look like a "wall of death" bike, highlighting the very short wheelbase. It also means removing the rear mudguard and lights and number plate. (The "dream" bike in your pic has no indicators, licence plate, or reflector - and a taller, rather than wider rear tyre, that looks like it would foul the new lower guard.) This was a critical decision for me, since it looks bad either way, and hacking at the frame would mean I couldn't sell on the bike as easily. Glad you have your wits about you , so I'll watch your upgrade efforts with interest: Aesthetic decisions are all personal value judgements after all, so perhaps some pigs should wear lipstick!

i got re himalayan 411. indian bikes are affordable and durable. i love indian bikes.
What you have simply achieved so far is basic but looks cleaner already. I do love the Baker Express as it is. Please don’t do what TMF did & spend squillions on a great looking classic.
