Punished Lawyer Morty I have to research the battle of the bugle for a school project, but I have oversimplified, potential history, and sabaton, I’m gonna ace it.
reminds me of a marine I cant remember the name of, he was tired of fighting a ton of guerilla warfare tactics so when he was told that he and his men were surrounded he replied with "they cant get away from us now!"

An interesting part of the story that's rarely told is that when the German plenipotentiaries arrived at the 101st's headquarters, General McAuliffe at first thought the Germans wanted to surrender to him. Surrounded or not, he felt like he had the upper hand and was handing their asses to them. When he was told that they were demanding that he surrender, he said "aw, nuts!" and then went out to check on his men. When he got back to HQ, he was told that the Germans were demanding a response. That's when he sent the one-word reply "Nuts!" back to the German general Luttwitz. One of his staff told him that his first reaction had been the best possible response he could send to such an insolent demand. Luttwitz' commander, Hasso von Manteuffel, chewed out Luttwitz when he found out that he had sent the demand in the first place. He knew the 101st was an elite U.S. unit and wasn't going to surrender just because they got cut off.
Of course it was, Montgomery was in charge, and while his PR team was excellent at telling the British how great he was, the Germans didn’t pay their BBC license, so they didn’t know.

It seems just a bad idea cause that happened many times in Vietnam including the three day battle between 250 us soldiers and 4000 viet Kong and the us won
I am a grandson of one of the Battered Bastards of Bastogne, and the Old Man had nothing but respect for the souls of the 82nd. Hell, in Normandy, he was a part of a mixed platoon from the 82nd because of how bad the drop was. One of his best friends, was of the 82nd, and, to the day they died, he told the man, if it was not for him, the 101st would not have been formed, and, the Old Man would have died like a dog along with most of the first wave of the 29th from which he volunteered out of. He, was always confused as to why the airborne was abused, used as a common light trooper when they were trained and drilled endlessly to operate out of contact of their support. Even his older brother, a commando (By virtue of his birth of being a dual citizen of England and the US) asked him why they were trained so hard. Now, for the 82nd, they had it just as bad, if not worse than the 101st in the defence of St. Vito, a town in the region of the Ardennes, with the same mission, hold it at all cost. They held it, and bit back just as hard, alone out numbered and surrounded.
Questknight12 If I were a Battered Bastard than survived the Ardennes campaign, I'd prefer punch Eisenhower and face a prison sentence rather than receive a medal. How to do such stupid strategy? Yes, it worked, but at expense of many lives of elite soldiers. The Germans were far inferior in resources and manpower, and instead of break the line with several US Divisions, you prefer throwing some companies of paratroopers in the middle of a pair of german divisions. And you can guess, "is a distraction", but it took a month to force the Germans to retreat, and special forces like the 82th and the 101th were exploited in a wrong way.
Questknight12 I can understand than paratroopers were a new element in warfare tactics, but it doesnt have any sense order any military unit to hold against a entire army more time than the necesary, paratroopers weren't some kind of Supersoldiers. The same applies now, in WWII, and 2000 years ago. If you order a unit to hold against a larger force, allright, but procure to rush and push an assault while the enemy is concentrated on the designated unit, for the love of God, you can't leave them to fight till death, while having superior manpower and resources.
It was a solid strategy. Bastogne was a crucial road junction, without which the Wehrmacht's spearheads towards Antwerp couldn't be properly supplied. As for superior manpower and resources they are factors, not outcomes. Just look at the Eastern Front and see what sacrifice was required for victory.
I know this is an old comment, but I don't appreciate the air of elitism. The 101st and 82nd were far from being the only units to hold back the German salient. In fact those "common light troopers" who apparently "died like dogs" were the reason the 101st was able to reinforce Bastogne before the first panzer could even be heard by the paras. Respect should be had for all participants, Airborne or otherwise. Also, the 82nd was hardly involved in the defense of St. Vith, let alone held it all by themselves. Their major role was the defense of the bulge's northern shoulder around La Gleize.
This is why I love sabaton, this song accurately describes their music, loud and explosive with energy. There is always so much force into each one and I love it!
Other pop music artists: as long as I can rhyme "smile" with "while" and make the word "me" sound like "may", I am a God to the 13 year olds who watch me and don't know about auto tune.

Since the survivors of the Bastogne siege describe it as constant shooting the drums sound exactly like a machine gun firing non stop. The video clip also helps. Just like "final solution" sabaton once again did an amazing job on combining music with immersion in the event they are describing. Excellent
Fun fact: in the second season of the show Jericho, the town militia used the "Nuts!" reply when the town was laid siege to by a larger, better-armed opposing force. It was such an important moment in the season's final arc that when the network announced it was cancelling the show, fans sent truckfulls of assorted nuts to the network headquarters in protest. Thanks to them, we got a rather rushed but fairly satisfying final season.
I remember finding this song and this band completely by accident a little under a year ago. I was searching for the official cadence of the 101st, when I stumbled upon this exact video. I then looked up Sabaton, and found my first and still only favorite Heavy Metal band. Seriously wish I could have seen you guys in Florida! Edit: I saw them on October 4th 2019!
Germans: "Yes, so how about we attack this division?" other german: "The division whos symbol is the national bird of america, and the same guys who litteraly dropped out of aircraft and beat our asses in normandy? but now they have tanks as well? The guys who are litteraly trained in operating without support and while being surrounded?" Germans: "Yes" other german: "Alrighty then"
The screaming eagles were an paratrooper division with mainly light weapons. The tanks were sent by Patton to relieve pressure from the eagles and to push the enemy back.
"Looks like you guys are going to be surrounded." "We're paratroopers, Lieutenant. We're supposed to be surrounded." Yes, I know that's from a TV show. Doesn't dull the point.
For the US Army this was one of the deadliest battles ever fought besides Gettysburg during the Civil War or the final offensives that took place in WW1 30 years earlier on the same grounds with so much confusion from both sides that it led to heavy losses.

Unguided Reaper dude they didn't have much of a military at the time if I'm remembering correctly what could they have done? Fight a war that would have caused needless casualties and destruction on their part as they fought a war they had no chance if winning?
Unguided Reaper Sweden had ammunition for about 10 minutes. I think that shows why we didn't want to be involved in the war. All our tanks, planes and canons were also very old. @@Brewski_3-2 wrong. According to an interview with the general's aid when he was informed of the demand to surrender the general replied : "us surrender? Nuts!" when they were trying to think of the wording for their reply the aid said that what the general had said was appropriate. "what did I say?" "you said nuts!" so they wrote that down and gave it to the German representative. He asked "vas is das? Nuts?" and the aid replied "in plain English, go to hell!" it did not mean not understanding terms of surrender. It meant go to hell

These are the men to glorify as they gave their all to defend their homeland and earned the respect of their foes. The battles of the Ardennes across the war will never be forgotten because of men like this.
George Patton's Third Army was moving north to relieve Bastogne when they got word of General MacAuliffe's one word reply of "Nuts!" to the German's demand for surrender. Patton told his staff, "Push harder and move faster! Any man that articulate deserves to be saved!"
We had a local Screaming Eagle. His name was James "Pee Wee" Martin. He passed away at 101 years in his sleep on Sept 11th. I think he would have been honored to know there was a song commemorating him and his brothers in arms.
What I like about this video is it shows that the 101st wasn't alone in Bastone, but part of the 10th Armored Division was trapped in there. What gets left out is General McAuliffe used the elements of the 10th Armored as his rapid reaction force, and they would shore up and close an breeches in the outline. They were key to hold Bastone. McAuliffe himself didn't call it an Airborne victory he called it a combined arms victory, and made sure the elements, which included several independent artillery battalions, as the part of the 10th Armored Division also got recognized for their defense of Bastone.
My gr. grandfather was 2/327th GIR 101st Airborne WWII. He fought previously with other units in North Africa, Sicily, and Salerno. Between Bastogne and the Argonne, lets just say encircling Americans in a French forest is about as good as an idea as invading Russia in the winter.
the americans have experience being surrounded in french forests
It seems just a bad idea cause that happened many times in Vietnam including the three day battle between 250 us soldiers and 4000 viet Kong and the us won
we are extremely good at shooting everything that moves: just ask the Devil Dogs.
"sir...the enemy has us surrounded"..."those poor bastards".

@@Sabaton cuando vienes a México carnal :D
Um no, St. Vith wasn't surrounded. It never was
I know this is an old comment, but I don't appreciate the air of elitism.

The lyrics
Crack of the lightning splitting the ground
Thunder is sounding, artillery pounding
Wrath of the Nazi's cast on Bastogne
Facing their forces alone
Alone, alone
Sent from the skies jumped into the unknown
The march to Berlin has begun
Spearhead the charge surrounded by foes
Eagles are leading the way
France is still under enemy rule
Push, axis retreat
Thrown towards Arnhem a bitter defeat
They're stretched out just one bridge too far
Turn of the tide, it's breaking away
Losing momentum, retreat
Go to Bastogne, the crossroads must hold
Stand, alone in the cold
Crack of the lightning splitting the ground
Thunder is sounding, artillery pounding
Wrath of the Nazi's cast on Bastogne
Facing their forces alone
Alone, alone
Dig your own foxholes or dig your own grave
The storm is about to begin
The siege has begun, there's nowhere to run
Panzerkampfwagen emerge
Tanks and mortars are shaking the ground
Prey of man and machine
Crack of the lightning splitting the ground
Thunder is sounding, artillery pounding
Wrath of the Nazi's cast on Bastogne
Facing their forces alone
Chill of the winter bite to the bone and Christmas is drawing near
Soldiers are freezing, the death toll increasing
They're dying in their holes
There's no surrender, there's no retreat, the Wehrmacht is drawing near
There's no reinforcements, they're fighting all alone
Sent from the skies ended up in Bastogne
As easy, as hard as they get
Nazi command request and demand
Offer surrender, declined
Nuts! The generals word echo clear
Nuts! The Nazi's shall hear
Crack of the lightning splitting the ground
Thunder is sounding, artillery pounding
Wrath of the Nazi's cast on Bastogne
Facing their forces alone
Crack of the lightning splitting the ground
Thunder is sounding, artillery pounding
Wrath of the Nazi's cast on Bastogne
Facing their forces alone

Since the survivors of the Bastogne siege describe it as constant shooting the drums sound exactly like a machine gun firing non stop. The video clip also helps.
