I always adored watching Julia's work, he managed to bring an energy and intensity to every part. How appropriate that his final role was one motivated by love, and marked by a no-holds-barred performance that will be long remembered. Honestly, I tear up just thinking about what must have gone through his mind at the time...
Peter Cushing was regarded as a bit more of a B movie actor; he was certainly very well known, but Hammer Films were not given the same credence as the type of work Sir Alec Guinness had done that had led to BAFTAs and Oscars. Don't get me wrong -- I love Peter Cushing and I think the snobbery toward genre storytelling is misplaced, but I think the point is that even though Peter Cushing would have been known, Sir Alec would have been the only one to have been truly respected (whether that's valid or not).

We learned to sing and play most of the movie's themes and had a little concert for our family. Man I wish we had a video camera back then.

@anton1990 that was almost the same reason Brian Blessed wanted to play Prince Vultan. He loved the comic as a kid, and he and his friends would play as Flash and the other characters. Brian has some hilarious stories about shooting the movie in his autobiography "Absolute Pandemonium"

If memory serves, he was reading the Star Wars script while filming the movie "Murder by Death" (*also* not a very "serious" movie), and in a behind the scenes bit, one of the actors from MbD asked him about it, and he said something to the effect that he thought it was actually going to be a pretty big movie. Like, him and Lucas (and maybe not even Lucas!) were the only people in advance who thought it might have some legs...
And gave us one of the best lines in movie history. “For you, the day Bison graced your village was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday.”
I would put Orson Welles in there for the 80s animated Transformers movie. He was absolutely broke at the time and only did it for the check, but Omicron was great.
Transformers (1986) was a financial dud and either panned or outright ignored by critics, so there’s a case to be made that it was “bad” in conventional terms. Of course, it became a cult classic that treated its audience way more respectfully than did most of the live-action movies.

But how he said it, with the slight jumbling in the breath as his character Gomez would have been slightly embarrassed having been under indictment. One could write an entire college essay on that subject.

Arguable mention: Nicole Kidman in Bewitched. SHE was perfect. Blame a very confusing script and a MISCAST WILL FERREL for everything else. Shoutout to Kristen Chenowith and Steve Carrel tho. He TRULY should have gotten his own Uncle Arthur spinoff.

Raul Julia did not do it for the paycheck. He had been diagnosed with cancer and knew he had little time left. He did this movie because his kids loved Streetfighter II and he wanted to leave them with a movie that they loved where they could see their dad
He also did it for the paycheck to leave them some money after he passed. Doing it for the paycheck is not something horrible and disgusting as a motivation. People go to work every day to a job they hate for the paycheck. The fact his children loved Street Fighter 2 is the extremely fantastic reason to take the role, but the money was a great bonus to leave his children.

It is amazing how many A and B lister celebs take roles just for the money because they bought houses. Jeremy Irons took the D&D bad guy role because he just bought a summer home and needed to pay for it.

Agree 💯% about Max Von Sydow as Ming the Merciless in Flash Gordon. One other brief, but still convincing role of his was as James Bond's nemesis, Ernst Stavro Blofeld in 1983's Never Say Never Again.

Alec Guiness said in an interview on Parkinson that when he first read the script; "I had to go on turning the page. I mean that is an essential in any script. ,. . . then I went on reading, and I thought I like this if only we can get some of the dialogue altered." He also praised Lucas as a director in the same interview. Let's not pretend he didn't like and wasn't interested in Star Wars but for the money.
Raul Julia's portrayal of M. Bison has no place on this list. His taking the role was no cash grab. Julia was dying of cancer and knew it. He also knew he had one movie left in him before he became too weak due to his disease. He chose Street Fighter, not because of the money, but because his sons were big Street Fighter fans. One of them reportedly loved playing M. Bison more than any other character. So Julia took the role of Bison for them. His brilliant portrayal of the villain was his gift to his boys.
Jack and Jill grew on me, thanks to Mr. Pacino, who does have a bigger role than one expects. It also helps that this film can be considered as a Holliday movie.

In a god-aweful movie, Al Pacino came up with one of the best roles ever. He made so much out of his position as Acting Icon and indulged in the absolute best self-deprecating humour you can find. When “Jill” accidentally breaks his Oscar and she says “Oh, you must have another one”, his response of “Well, you’d think that, but no” Is one of the funniest lines ever delivered.

I've heard that everybody on Flash Gordon knew they were making goofy nonsense EXCEPT either the writer or the director... I forget which... but one of the creators really thought he was making a creative masterpiece amongst lots of people who were playing it straight but self-aware ... that guy was totally not self-aware.
In behind the scenes stuff, I think it was the writer who was perfectly clear that it was camp, and he'd deliberately chosen to go for camp after reading up on the comics and seeing how goofy they were. Dunno about the director, but my understanding was that the actors for Flash and Dale at least were totally serious, and possibly *not* aware that it was supposed to be camp (the "best" camp IS played totally straight after all, unless you've actually *got* a BRIAN BLESSED, Max von Sydow, or Raul Julia, Jeremy Irons, etc. who can really chew the scenery opposite the folks playing it earnestly straight...)
On The Godfather, Coppola caught Brando reading his lines off a cantaloupe. You should seek out those Michael Caine acting lesson videos where he emphasizes finding productions that take place on the Cote d'Azur.

There are many things the Yugioh dub is infamously terrible for, Eric Stuart and Dan Green giving fantastically perfect over-the-top performances are not among those flaws. Those two are amazing in their roles.

Type casting is when an actor plays a certain type of character in a long string of performances. For example, being type cast as a brooding malcontent or a sweet motherly figure. If someone gets a reputation for always playing a kind hearted matron, and then they get a role as a sadistic serial killer, but it’s not known to the audience prior to seeing the film, that would work as ‘against type casting’.

Raul Julia took the Bison role for the right reasons. First, his kids were fans on the game. Second, he knew his cancer was going to kill him, so he wanted his kids to remember him at his best. So, he poured everything he could into that role, for the right reasons.

I've earned the right to damn well grab whatever I can in the time I've got left!" One of the few people who can admit he's only in the crappy film for the money and STILL sound cool.... Al Pacino was the ONLY good thing about Jack & Jill, and you gotta admit the Dunkaccino "commercial" was fantastically bad! Raul Julia was the best thing about Street Fighter. And I don't care - Robert De Niro was perfectly cast as Fearless Leader! And a better example of Brando doing a film solely for the money would be the Christopher Columbus movie with Georges Corraface as Columbus. Brando played Torquemada with the absolute least amount of activity possible. He didn't give a damn about the movie and looked it. But it's easy to ignore that since the film is best remembered for the native girls -- all appearing to be in their early 20s and obviously cast based on their cup sizes -- and kept nude throughout. /snark
Jeremy Irons in Dungeons & Dragons sounds like another name actor in another, much earlier, and probably much cheesier, bad fantasy film. This was 1980's Hawk the Slayer and the actor playing the scenery-chewing villain was Jack Palance. He ordinarily was typecast as toughs or villains, but not like this! He's clearly just having as much fun with this part as possible. In an era replete with so-bad-it's-good fantasy films, this one is a standout.
It’s sad that while Pacino was selling his soul to… well, himself, in doing Jack and Jill his Scarface costars Steven Bauer and Mark Margolis were playing memorable roles in Breaking Bad. Seeing how A-listers like Costner, Ford and Stallone have done TV recently it’s possible that Pacino can make up for that massive misstep.

Arguable mention: Nicole Kidman in Bewitched. SHE was perfect. Blame a very confusing script and a MISCAST WILL FERREL for everything else.

I think may favorite hypothetical for Jeremy Irons in the D&D movie is that he walk on set, took a look around, and said to himself "Oh, it's going to be one of THOSE movies", and then decided he was not going to "act" and instead just have fun.

How could you forget Michael Caine? Caine is a true master of the paycheck movie roles. But of the at least 8 films you can choose from, Jaw: The Revenge may be the best due to Caine's commentary on the film. He's quoted as saying, "I have never seen it, but by all accounts, it is terrible. However, I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific."
Raul Julia did not do it for the paycheck. He had been diagnosed with cancer and knew he had little time left. He did this movie because his kids loved Streetfighter II and he wanted to leave them with a movie that they loved where they could see their dad
He also did it for the paycheck to leave them some money after he passed. Doing it for the paycheck is not something horrible and disgusting as a motivation. People go to work every day to a job they hate for the paycheck. The fact his children loved Street Fighter 2 is the extremely fantastic reason to take the role, but the money was a great bonus to leave his children.

It is amazing how many A and B lister celebs take roles just for the money because they bought houses. Jeremy Irons took the D&D bad guy role because he just bought a summer home and needed to pay for it.

Eccentric he may have been, but Marlon Brando was Perfectly cast as Jor-El and he was believable as being 'fatherly' in his scenes with Clark Kent at the Fortress of Solitude- far moreso than Russell Crowe was in the role in Man of Steel.
Agree 💯% about Max Von Sydow as Ming the Merciless in Flash Gordon. One other brief, but still convincing role of his was as James Bond's nemesis, Ernst Stavro Blofeld in 1983's Never Say Never Again.

Alec Guiness said in an interview on Parkinson that when he first read the script; "I had to go on turning the page. I mean that is an essential in any script. ,. . . then I went on reading, and I thought I like this if only we can get some of the dialogue altered." He also praised Lucas as a director in the same interview. Let's not pretend he didn't like and wasn't interested in Star Wars but for the money.

Raul Julia's portrayal of M. Bison has no place on this list. His taking the role was no cash grab. Julia was dying of cancer and knew it. He also knew he had one movie left in him before he became too weak due to his disease. He chose Street Fighter, not because of the money, but because his sons were big Street Fighter fans. One of them reportedly loved playing M. Bison more than any other character. So Julia took the role of Bison for them. His brilliant portrayal of the villain was his gift to his boys.
I can't remember who said it. But this list makes me think of the quote "Just because the film is bad, that doesn't mean you should be bad in it."

Jack and Jill grew on me, thanks to Mr. Pacino, who does have a bigger role than one expects. It also helps that this film can be considered as a Holliday movie.

In a god-aweful movie, Al Pacino came up with one of the best roles ever. He made so much out of his position as Acting Icon and indulged in the absolute best self-deprecating humour you can find. When “Jill” accidentally breaks his Oscar and she says “Oh, you must have another one”, his response of “Well, you’d think that, but no” Is one of the funniest lines ever delivered.

You know in the twilight series movies....a couple of the evil vampires tend to resemble Dracula, especially Michael Sheen's character anddd that 1 other guy, that kind of speaks with an agonized vocal tone! I've heard that everybody on Flash Gordon knew they were making goofy nonsense EXCEPT either the writer or the director... I forget which... but one of the creators really thought he was making a creative masterpiece amongst lots of people who were playing it straight but self-aware ... that guy was totally not self-aware.
Same could be said of every Uwe Boll movie ever made.

In behind the scenes stuff, I think it was the writer who was perfectly clear that it was camp, and he'd deliberately chosen to go for camp after reading up on the comics and seeing how goofy they were.
Dunno about the director, but my understanding was that the actors for Flash and Dale at least were totally serious, and possibly *not* aware that it was supposed to be camp (the "best" camp IS played totally straight after all, unless you've actually *got* a BRIAN BLESSED, Max von Sydow, or Raul Julia, Jeremy Irons, etc. who can really chew the scenery opposite the folks playing it earnestly straight...)

There are many things the Yugioh dub is infamously terrible for, Eric Stuart and Dan Green giving fantastically perfect over-the-top performances are not among those flaws. Those two are amazing in their roles.

Raul Julia took the Bison role for the right reasons. First, his kids were fans on the game. Second, he knew his cancer was going to kill him, so he wanted his kids to remember him at his best. So, he poured everything he could into that role, for the right reasons.

Everything about Flash Gordon was over the top. Every cast member, the production design and Queen's music were wonderfully excessive.

Al Pacino was the ONLY good thing about Jack & Jill, and you gotta admit the Dunkaccino "commercial" was fantastically bad! Raul Julia was the best thing about Street Fighter. And I don't care - Robert De Niro was perfectly cast as Fearless Leader!
And a better example of Brando doing a film solely for the money would be the Christopher Columbus movie with Georges Corraface as Columbus. Brando played Torquemada with the absolute least amount of activity possible. He didn't give a damn about the movie and looked it.
But it's easy to ignore that since the film is best remembered for the native girls -- all appearing to be in their early 20s and obviously cast based on their cup sizes -- and kept nude throughout. /snark

Jeremy Irons in Dungeons & Dragons sounds like another name actor in another, much earlier, and probably much cheesier, bad fantasy film. This was 1980's Hawk the Slayer and the actor playing the scenery-chewing villain was Jack Palance. He ordinarily was typecast as toughs or villains, but not like this! He's clearly just having as much fun with this part as possible.
In an era replete with so-bad-it's-good fantasy films, this one is a standout.
It’s sad that while Pacino was selling his soul to… well, himself, in doing Jack and Jill his Scarface costars Steven Bauer and Mark Margolis were playing memorable roles in Breaking Bad.
Seeing how A-listers like Costner, Ford and Stallone have done TV recently it’s possible that Pacino can make up for that massive misstep.
