TTT OST still slaps to this day. It is really interesting that there were different health for each character. Also, the fact that Jin and Julia is still regarded as top tier in Tekken 7 is a nice coincidence lol. Thank you for the video!
As someone who played Tekken Tag 1 for 300+ hours at the arcades, which became one of my most played arcade Tekken games along with Tekken 5 DR, seeing this game made me feel so nostalgic because it was the time when people played games just to have fun rather than competing against each other. Tekken Tag 1 was unbalanced, but we all loved it because we played it with the experience of having fun. Winning was fun and losing wasn't a big deal. Fighting game players nowadays are so competitive; they have a hard time getting over a loss and often hold a grudge against someone they've lost to. I really enjoy seeing your detailed insights about this game. You put a lot of information that I never knew back when I still played Tekken Tag 1 regularly. I never knew the tech roll height was lower than Tekken 3, tagging in on the player 2 side was closer, and some characters having longer health than others. By the way, there are a few details that I wish you included: - The kip up ukemi, which you had to hold forward when you hit the ground, was a new mechanic in this game. - Law and Paul was the only tag team which you could do a "GREAT" combo. A combo that makes the announcer say "GREAT!!!" once you pull it off. - When you tag out after Forest Law's Poison Arrow (f+2~1) during a successful hit, the partner does an automatic running command without having to input f,f,f (or f,f,N during tag in). Doesn't apply to every tag partner, though. - You can break the "double over" stun by tagging out. Though, I'm not sure if the recovery is faster than breaking it by pressing/holding forward.
I think the fact that combos were simple and it had good movement and okizeme game are part of why the game was so popular and still well liked. Most of the players were kids and teens in a time where good info on the game was hard to find on the internet, and good movement and okizeme are something you can learn more intuitively in a party setting (which was how most played in the west, online wasn't a thing), while you pretty much need to lab combos. I didn't even realize how important juggles were until T6 This lead to a fuller experience of the entire game for an entry level player.
If there's one Tekken, I can always go back to & have a good time, it's Tekken Tag 1. It's definitely the more fun Tag game in comparison to its sequel.
This is probably my favorite series you've done so far. I hope you continue to do these retrospectives in the future; as one who only recently started playing Tekken , the history of the series is absolutely fascinating. Tekken Tag Tournament was the only Tekken game I ever played when i was younger, and that was more so casual mashing instead of playing. The soundtrack holds a special place in my heart.
I'm from the mid west and there was a guy back in the day known as Fred the Jack player that was amazing with all 3 Jacks, like he was beating top tier players back in the day. Don't let the character deceive you, he was deadly in the hands of a master.
Fantastic vid! It's interesting you spent a ton of time on Devil when other than Unconkable, he didn't really get a ton of tournament notoriety compared to the Jin/Kazuya team which iirc won every TTT Evo.
Shirdel, the thing about Devil was that he wasn't really the best character in the game per se, but he was extremely effective outside of the absolutely highest level of play. Like the video said, Devil and Bruce were the "cheap" characters. I haven't played much T7 aside from the first couple of months, maybe Fahk after nerfs/hitbox fixes is a good comparison? Similar characters would be Lars in T6 and Jinpachi in Tag2, sure they weren't winning tournaments but everyone knows what they were lol. Let's just say if Angel in TTT2 had Devils TP like in beta, she wouldn't be bottom-tier.
this was THE game to play in the arcades back in the day. either this, MvC2, or soul calibur... i still remember the character select screen music, and vibe to this day

Unknown’s theme is my favorite from tekken tag 1 just listening to it’s very spooky but also interesting. I like be in the mirror in tekken 2 because of the unnerving moment it gives off but also, the sadness it has. Mind you, I’ve only played tekken 5 dark resurrection on the psp.
Bruce has always been a force of nature in the series. But yes he was an all-out Muay Thai smashing machine in TTT, easily capable of beating any character on the roster to the punch 😎👌🏽🥋

these are really amazing for me! As a newcomer to Tekken 7(very late into its life) I really appreciate seeing the roots of the series, it makes me wish I appreciated arcades when they were still around. I blame inflation for the reason quarters are no longer the viable currency they used to be. I wish I had known how awesome it was to have an arcade 10 minutes away from my house as a kid, now if I wanted to go to a real arcade I would need to drive miles.
I just wish we had a Tekken like this. A bit simplier, more about neutral, not "lol I have an EX bar so I ToD you". Tekken 7 started so well and now I don´t know what to think of it but I sure don´t think is worth playing it seriously now.
Libe Jenkins because Tag 1 is simpler, with a more equal weight between offense and defense (neutrality as you said), there is a feeling that a loss is “on you,” which is a good feeling. Whatever people want to say about tier imbalance in Tag 1, which I would argue is real but consistently exaggerated, the game just isn’t as cheesy as any Tekken which came after. I like EX bars in late phase 2d fighters, but I agree with you on this as well. In Tekken, they add room for creativity but mostly cheese as far as the impact on mind games. The same could said of walls in Tekken. Whisky straight no chaser was a good metaphor. By the way, I’ve got some classic and high level Tag 1 on my UA-cam channel that you might appreciate. ✊
It was the first game that I ever bought for a home console that looked better and ran smoother than it's arcade counterpart. The PS2 got some flack for having a slow launch, but this game was all I needed back then.
Harada hates Tag 1 and Tag 2 did horribly financial wise. It had no presence in e-sports either and the community is genuinely surprised how well Tekken 7 did despite the odds and the low budget. The chances for Tag 3 is low but i'd like to see it myself. I would suggest them to do that as an "alternative format" simultaneously with Tekken 7/8 so people have somewhere else to go if they don't like the current state of the main game
You're so right about Tekken Tag being one of the best in the series.... can't even imagine how many hours I put into that one. Choosing the team was half the fun
God the piano intro is so fucking nostalgic!! It just unlocks part of my brain. Also Xiayous theme from tag 1 one is underrated, but also Staff roll music is one of the best tekken songs ever, only maybe Moonlit Wilderness truly compares and maybe Antares
I agree with the majority of the comments here. That Blasted Salami you are a gem to the tekken community. The content you create is top notch and unrivalled as far as tekken is concerned. Well done and i'm looking forward to the Tekken 4 retrospective👍 (my favourite after Tag 1)

Tekken 7's metagame is better than the rest if the series, and is nowhere near as cheesy as T5-TTT2
You do have a Tekken "like this" - It's called.... Tekken Tag Tournament. 😱
@@Mandarin2099 Tekken 7 isn't all that cheesy since season 2
@@Blit-X-TVLive yeah I wish it was on PC and new generation consoles and had working online.
This game still looks SO GOOD
It was the first game that I ever bought for a home console that looked better and ran smoother than it's arcade counterpart. The PS2 got some flack for having a slow launch, but this game was all I needed back then.
Appreciate this coverage!
love all of your videos! The work you put in and the quality of these vids are some of the best on youtube.
Production value was top tier and I was right about the characters that would be mentioned 👍🏾
This video it's just amazing! Thank you man for the hard work! Definitely a must see video!
As a Josie main having never played Bruce in the past, I'm looking forward to Tag 3 to play them both together ❤
Not sure we'll get another tag game. The last one did horribly.
@Rory Addison If you two start arguing, I'm gonna slap you both, lol.
@Rory Addison When I said did horribly I mean it didn't sell well in comparison to previous games and Tekken 7.
@@Leadblast TTT2 actually also alienated a lot of players as it was considerably more technical, along with some other issues.
Still my fave tekken by far....miss those days playng with friends....nice video
All the songs you listed are from ttt1?
@@noctsickversusTOBETOLD no the last 2 are from tekken 5
It was that afternoon decades ago when i first played that game. And now here i am today,a tekken fanatic man. I love this game !!!
I agree with the majority of the comments here. That Blasted Salami you are a gem to the tekken community. The content you create is top notch and unrivalled as far as tekken is concerned. Well done and i'm looking forward to the Tekken 4 retrospective👍 (my favourite after Tag 1)
