Hi Stephanie. Quick tip for you to bring all lines to 0 Z elevation and quickly clean up your file there are 3 commands that will make your life easy and remove the need for you to paste to another file. First - "Flatten" (then select all) this will make all elements selected Z=0. Then use "OVERKILL" which will remove any lines of the same layer sitting on top of other lines. Again select all. Then "PURGE" all. Which will remove all the unused layers and other junk in the file. The problem with pasting into a clean file is that you will lose your coordinate system if one has been set by civil3D which is easy enough to do again but something you will lose. Working with proper coordinates in Rhino is problematic I have found it doesnt like dealing with large values and it can be better to move everything close to rhino local 0 and then move it back after you worked with it in Rhino (I use workflows where I push into Revit, and these coordinates and coordinate systems are really important between these softwares)

Great! I use Overkill and Purge all the time :) I never worry about losing the coords because Rhino prefers all to be at origin anyways, so it's not relevant for my work. But it's a good point to remember if it's important to you.

Great workflow explanation. only one tip - the ISOLATE command in Rhino hides all non-selected linework. Does exactly the same thing as inverting the selection and then hiding selected but in one step

Thanks for an efficient step by step guide for cleaning the layers and purging unnecessary components. Would you happen to know of any components that allow you to link your CAD file into Rhino and can change based on the plans in AutoCAD (kind of like an XRef between the two programs)?

I think VisualARQ can do this, but it is a paid plugin. Have you tried importing your CAD as a block reference? That should update with new linework if you just drag & drop the file into Rhino if you keep the basepoint the same. Let me know if it works!

@@FutureLandscapes I've tried using blocks that are embedded and it doesn't update unless I close rhino and open the file again. Once I that I get prompted to update the block, I wish I could do it automatically someway. There must be a work around but I can't figure it out (using this method I should be able to create grasshopper definitions that can automatically adjust to the cad drawing changes)

@@mrmonkeymanfreak using the same strategy, once you have a referenced cad file you can type the command "BlockManager" this should open a set of many possible blocks that are referenced in your model. Once finding yours just simply hit the update button and that should do the trick. Theres also a update automatically option in that same area however I haven't had much luck with it. Hope that helps some.
