    Description:
    Finally finished up a project that I have been excited about for a long time. Using all primitive methods and local materials to make a hardstone axe. Careful selection was key to find the right stone for this task. I found a rock that was considerably heavier and seemed harder then all the other stones down by the river (Susquehanna). The rock was conveniently close to the size and shape of the axe that I was aiming to make. I used quartzite river cobbles to peck the blank to shape. Flint is the most effective pecking stone but was not available to me in this scenario. Making this celt has definitely been a learning experience and an enjoyable one. This sharpened and polished celt made short work of a 5 inch elm, slicing the fibers extremely efficiently. The hardest part of this process has been getting a handle to hold up to aggressive percussion. A new handle is in the works. Take care and thanks for watching!

    Well done on technique! Your piece did well for you! The bone chisel was quite a quantum leap ahead , but a great adaptation of resources! " You have come far Pilgrim", some to go yet, but, you... Will get there! Of that I am positive! See ya on the trail! ATB from sunny Wintergarden,Florida😎!

      I had a lot of fun with this one. I wanted to stay true to my area and use the tools at hand. There are a lot of hardstone artifacts around these parts and it's nice to see how they would have worked. I am really pleased to see this axe cut so well and have used it quite a bit since this video. So glad you could stop by and watch! Keep enjoying that Florida sun shine!..lol....Ben

    Yes, the Tribe is back!! It’s been a while but you gave us a killer with this one, Ben! What an impressive show of skill. Pretty crazy how you chiseled out that hole. Really loved seeing it come together from start to finish like that. If you ever come across a random cantaloupe in the woods, I bet that thing would really smash the heck out of it, haha! Gotta say, the music, the camera work, the editing, it all made for one heck of a video, buddy. Man if I knew you were just waiting for me to tell you to make a video, I would’ve said something sooner, haha! Seriously though, great job Ben. It’s good seeing you back on here. Keep em coming. Oh, and it’s good to know the “white Indian” still roams the woods of Pennsylvania 😉

      Yes, Dale, you asked so nicely I couldn't resist..lol... It's been too long since a vid but believe me the "white Indain" as you say...lol... still terrorizes these parts and scares his neighbors..I am pretty sure they have nightmares about him...I have to laugh every time I come out of the woods carrying an arm full of deer parts and a big club dressed like a mountain man thing...you should see some of the heads turn as a car passes by...good stuff...Yes, this axe works great and I have used it a bunch since this vid. Glad you could stop by to watch my latest, Dale. Have fun out there and see you on the next on!......Ben

    Ben! You are back! I am so glad to see this video from you, it has made my day! Great job as always, you did an amazing job creating this celt! Now that you have the technique I want to offer you a challenge, make a Lamoka beveled adze, I find a lot of these in my area of Western New York State . If you need me to send one to you for an example, let me know! Good to see you back my friend, I think of you often!

    • @TheTribeOfBenjamin
      @TheTribeOfBenjamin  5 років тому +1

      Thanks Paleoman, nice to hear from you. I hope your staying busy with you primitive antics in your neck of the woods! I like your idea. I've been telling myself I need a new adze for a while now. I use my ironwood adze handle as a mallet all the time. I should really grab me a nice piece of hardstone and get to grinding. I watching a video of yours where you talking about the difference between a celt and an adze. I believe you showed that unique beveled pattern on those Lamokas. If I am not mistaken I remember 5 different beveled faces on top of the adze. I will stop over and have a look at some of those nice finds of yours. Always great hearing from you Paleoman! I need to get up North sometime for one of those Letchworth knap-ins. Have fun my fiend!....Ben

    • @Paleoman52
      @Paleoman52 5 років тому +1

      @@TheTribeOfBenjamin One detail that the adze has different than a celt is the adze has a slightly curved bit. Adzes were often used as gouges depending on the curvature of the bit. Those Lamoka beveled adzes are really designed well and shows me that the people that created them were far from primitive. I hope to see you at Letchworth one of these days, it would be awesome!

      @@TheTribeOfBenjamin when I was a teenager I was just developing an interest in primitive skills, before I even knew that term. I had just learned about some indigenous ancestry in my family and I was just experimenting banging rocks together on the beach lol. I somehow found your video about making a stone tomahawk and I thought that was the dopest thing ever so I ordered a bunch of chert and obsidian online ( I live in eastern ontario canada so all the chert is a good distance south from me.) I then got into flintknapping and started messing around in the woods making spears and such. Years later I just recently had the access to hides and I made my first buckskin out of goathide. I actually handed it in as a project in one of my courses last November and got an A plus haha.
