  • No doubt about it, Upper Red Lake is an early ice walleye utopia! It was a "slow" day, but we still cracked a bunch of nice walleye, including one extra large kicker!

      It's pretty silly. There's a lot of fish, and they're nice and chunky this time of year!

    I'm about to go there in 2 weeks, i am inexperienced and i was wondering if you could give me a tip or 2 to catch some walleyes.

    • @NickLindner
      @NickLindner  5 років тому

      Don't be afraid to hop holes if you're not marking anything on your electronics and make sure to setup a tip up/deadstick

    • @458saleen
      @458saleen 5 років тому

      Drill holes on breaklines. First break is like 6' and next ones are gradual. Deadstick with glow demons and minnow. Hillmans has them up there. Main rod go with buckshot spoons, rippin raps, jigging raps, slick jigs, they all work. Red or orange colors work best. More times than not, you call them in with rattles or pound bottom and they hit the set rod. Oh and most importantly, have all rods ready at prime time. 2 until dusk is dinner time.

      Thanks man. Ice fishing can be a lot of fun when the bite is right! There's nothing like watching the fish come up and strike on your electronics

      Dang, sounds so much fun I've been Rainbow Trout Fishing before though, I guess that somewhat counts. hahahahah. it must be extremely cold though when your fishing!

    • @NickLindner
      @NickLindner  5 років тому

      The cold is the biggest opstacle in ice fishing, imo. You can dress warm, but keeping your hands warm is always the biggest challenge.

    Great video. Looked like a good time. I like how a lot of your videos are on local bodies of water which are easily in reach of the average guy or gal. You’re videos are all fun to watch. Also a thumbs up on overall quality regarding video sound and editing. Nice professional products

    Glad you guys got into them! As always, nice video. That lake spoiled me so much, I quit going....no lie! Remember Red on Red and if it don't glow, it don't go....stained water. Open water my favorite color jig is blue. Had multiple 100 fish days in the spring....ridiculous! In all honesty, a kid could guide out there with corn as bait. Sand gravel transitions is what to look for, no secret spots as UPRL is one big bowl. We have never had a bad trip up there....ever. Once in 40 or times I seen them completely shut off and that was right before a front moved in. Even in -40 we caught fish! That UPRL strain are some ferocious fish! It's an unbelievable fishery.

      I wish I lived a closer because the walleye fishing is totally insane! I'll remember red on Red next time!

    • @458saleen
      @458saleen 5 років тому

      I hear ya on the drive....around 8 hours for us to Beacon or Hillman's. Probably a good thing though. If it was any closer, that lake would get pounded like no other! Another few weeks and they can change the est. population of Waskish with all the houses out there!

    • @NickLindner

      Very true. Distance is the primary protector of those northern lakes. Imagine how good Mille Lacs would be if it wasn't just a hop skip and a jump from the cities.

      I love about a 30 minute drive to upper red and the sad thing is I don’t fish it enough. I have focused on my more local lakes out my back door but definitely gong to hit it up more this year. I usually do the 2 week early ice up there and that’s about it. Love it when I am there. Got my 10 year old hooked now on upper red. That’s the only place he asks to go to. Love the video, I’ll have to have him watch this one.

    Good fishing as usual. Seems to me if you are using a prototype lure and catching fish, like he said he was, he should have been showing it to get interest at its highest. Just a thought.
