- Celebrating different cultures around the world is beautiful and can enrich many lives. But when you’re bringing a film crew along and hope to profit from the experience, then things get tricky. There's a fine line between appreciation and exploitation.
One UA-camr, Nas Daily, allegedly crossed the line with two Filipino women. A suspicious contract was forged, allegations were made, people are calling him out for exploiting an old woman for views, and now the Filipino government is involved.
What really happened in the Philippines?
Let’s find out.

APO WHANG OD is one of the oldest people in Philippines and she was highly respected for being the last surviving traditional tattoo artist in her tribe. She was also an elder and respected in her village
She was not supposed to tattoo outsiders as the traditional tattoo she made are actually made for warriors of the village in the past coming back from successful war. And she can't even teach other people but her direct descendant to tattoo.
The tradition is dying and a lot of the villagers today are moving out to other place like big city for better life. And she is not married. She was hesitant but eventually decide to allow tattooing outsiders and tourists, and then teach her extended family (her nieces) and 2 apprentice from non-family.
I love her and how she saved her tribe's important culture ❤️ PH gov acknowledged her too and gave her many awards and her village a better living.
Everyone should respect her. If you want to get tattooed by her, you should come to her village on the mountains. She will charge you but I heard it's only like $20 and most of it goes to the village. You should also done some community work on the village before Apo can tattoo you
Seriously this isn’t the first time that he exploited these people. Remember when he got banned from a village due to his actions? He took advantage from the people and culture to make him money while the people in the village didn’t get anything.
He also did something even worse but it never made headlines for some reason ( he once started a campaign to raise money to help injured Palestinians and affirmed the money was going to x hospital -and the campaign itself was supervised by the hospital- the hospital made in an official announcement that it was not true , but by that time lots of people have donated huge amounts of money ! and we don't know where the money went - all we only is that it never reached those in need !

As a Filipino, Filipino baiting is pretty much a common thing, the Filipinos are very proud of they're country, this is a free country and we are not that poor, we have an average 40k pesos Per harvest but most money is bought for farming, u can't blame they're spending and it's pretty hard to get jobs bc some people drop college due to large payment for college
Well same thing with indonesia
so my dad was seriously the only one to finish college including my mom
That stinks, college is really expensive here too and it’s mostly for rich people.
I'm Filipino but Tagalog scares me so baiting doesn't work on me lol
Yeah. Filipino baiting is a very common thing. It's just that we Filipinos appreciate outside countries or Foreign(ers) more than ourselves or our Country. If someone from another Country mentions the Philippines or us Filipinos, Mostly every Filipino that see it would immediately click on the Video.
Us Filipinos can easily make someone famous because if someone mentions us we would immediately click or watch it... And that's why it's called Filipino Baiting. A lot of UA-camrs out there actually use Filipino Baiting to get more Views and Likes, but of course, for the others, they are being genuine.
But it's just sad cause usually, we get too full on our pride and ourselves that we can end up bragging about stuffs. And I don't like it at all...
We have to appreciate and support ourselves and our Country more instead of focusing on Foreign things.
It is not only the Philippines but also many other countries too, including my home Malaysia. so we feel you guys. Once he went to Singapore and said that Singaporean is organised and unified and is focusing on one part that is parking. He shot all the Singaporean cars backing up into parking lots but took scenes of non-Singaporean cars parking head in first. insinuating that Malaysian is a lousy place that we are messy and all. yea its a very small thing. but later, I get to know that he has NEVER been in Malaysia in the previous vidoes and from some ppl saying he is not able to enter into Malaysia (not sure is it true). means that he doesn't know anything about Malaysia but rather used us to lift Singapore up. that is just disgusting of him. Yes, Singapore has things that we Malaysians don't. but at the same time, it's vice versa. so he shouldn't use one Nation that he doesn't know and can't enter into to trample us in order to talk and lift another up. disgusting. I unfollow immediately. Just a bonus. come to Malaysia and you know MANY MANY backs up into the parking. and I have also seen Singapore cars parking head in first too.
Dia warga negara Israel. Jadi dia tak boleh masuk. Namun, kemudian dia membeli kerakyatan Saint Kitts dan Nevis. Sekarang dia boleh masuk ke Malaysia.
As a Singaporean, I agreed. I love Malaysia and its simpler lifestyle not corrupted by modern consumerism. The food is better and more authentic. Go into the countryside and it is even more enjoyable and nostalgic! Singapore is not what others presented. It is good in that it is clean and safe. Other than that, life is stressful, people are competitive and braggy. Who cares how the cars are parked.

As a Filipino and a person who grew up in Kalinga, where Apo Whang-od resides, I am very disappointed with his actions. I have followed Nas Daily from his early days and have been encouraging my friends to watch his content because it provides great and inspiring stories about peope around the world. But just as what was said, Many people do not understand the value of tradition and culture for tribes. Not just foreigners but also anyone that seeks to exploit these things. I have seen a lot of people exploiting the Kalinga tattoo for money and they get reported each time. Nas doesn't understand that although a lot if people want to learn how to di traditional tattooing, it is not his choice to decide that. I also believe Apo Whang-od did not agree to this because she understood that tatooing belongs to everyone in her tribe so she does not have the right to agree to share it with the world. The whole tribe and the government agencies relating to culture need to give the go signal first.
All I can say is Nas, you keep saying about doing research and stuff before uploading your content, then you should've done PROPER research and UNDERSTANDING before claiming that you want others to learn Filipino tattoo and become teachers because frankly, IT IS NOT YOUR CHOICE TO DO THAT
Yeah it’s especially crazy that they even said in the video -the tradition is passed on - but then continued to try and make courses on how to do it. I 100% know that they probably manipulated the situation.

3) should anyone undergo a transaction (eg. Programs, documentary films etc) be it Filipinos or non Filipinos, they should under proper process by contacting The National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) of the Philippines. And surprise surprise, he didn't right?
Overall, not only did he completely ignored a law and a governing body but the very respect for our culture. Of which he is just a guest here on our soil.

@@beatrizdelapena4781 "Therefore she cannot give away the art for commercial use."
Yes she can. What she cannot do is claiming trademark/copyright over the name "Batok". Nobody can stop her from selling her arts for money, which she has been doing to sustain herself her whole life.
2) + 3) So basically, you're saying that indigenous people in Philippines aren't allowed to enter a contract without permission from the government?
@@HO1ySh33t "yes she can" 😂😂😂
Ugh no, she cannot.
FIRST, Batok is an umbrella term for the Traditional way of tattoing
SECOND, Kalinga culture uses a UNIQUE form of batok. (Obviously) every tribe is naturally unique because it it their culture their traditions that gives them identity from the many tribes in the Philippines.
It is not her artistic style, Kalinga tribal art and culture has existed as old as 12th century, YEARS before the 100+ year old Whang Od was born. She practices the art, she is part of a community, a tribe that has been in existense for generations. She is not the owner.
But the sanctity and the recerence of preserving that art and tradition SHOULD be their own tribesmen. What's the point of the word "Traditional" of anyone can just copy paste it and completely ruin the point of culture?
To make it even more simple, she can give tattoos. But you cannot and are not allowed to use their art form. Get it?
Because videotaping and marketing the step by step process is Indigenous Cultural Appropriation.
Ever heard of Aboriginal art and tattoo? They're protected because of their priceless value. What makes Kalinga culture different?

Fun Fact: Theres this one phycological manipulation technique in persuasion where you glorify the other party that you are arguing with to shine yourself in a better light in turn...also known as, the "humble" technique.. Not only that, Nas's party has also used alot of those "manipulative" techniques in their statements in hopes of turning the tide in their favor by gaining the sympathy and support of everyone... You can try and analyze each and every statement, connect how they relate to the situation and context, and what they are trying to achieve so.. You'll soon get hints of em if you just analyze them yourselves carefully...
On the otherhand, all that i have seen so far on the filipino's side is that they are using a "manipulative" technique of trying to gain pity, sympathy from their fellow filipinos with regards of seeking "vengeance" or rather justice. They are not trying to gain sympathy from other foreigners though, because they usually emphasize, "Filipinos" "we must stand up!" like how they used to do back then when they were in the spanish's control.... Its quite understandble since The Philippines literally has undergone through 3 COLONIALISMS, The Americans, The Japanese, and the Spaniards and yet still managed to stay together and uphole the "Philippine" icon and nationality..... So i think with what i got from both sides, im in more favor on the Filipinos, theyre not trying to gain the pity and sympathy of other nationalities, they want to make themselves seem strong enough not to be pushovers, it might actually backfire on them and that alone is kind of proof that theyre not that cunning in an evil way, they are only trying to gain the pity and sympathy of their fellow filipinos, to "gather" and defend. something like that...
