Having never camped or caravaned we bought a campervan 4 years ago which didn't have a heater. After a weekend in Dawlish where the temperature was -1°C during the day and -6°C overnight we struggled with everything being ice cold inside. Deisel heater fitted a couple of weeks later, absolute game changer warm van after a long day's winter walking.
I got bought an electric throw over blanket, and i fell in love. Heats really well and uses very low electricity. 100% getting one for the van as plan no heating in mine.
I used to drive back and forth between Oregon and Wyoming, and had no heating systems. You really do need a knit cap for that. If you have a fire going, put a good sized river rock over the fire for a while. Put it in your sleeping bag down by your feet. It will last a lot longer than a water bag.
In this weather, I have a fire in a folding BBQ and when not using it for food have a 10l stainless steel bucket filled with sand. I put that on the fire until it is time to go to sleep in the van and bring the bucket in with me. I made a frame to sit the bucket in so it doesn't get knocked over. Keeps the van warm the whole night.
@LoneWolfExplorer there is a copper plate I bent into an up turned U shape in with the sand as well along with one of those stove fans to circulate the air in the van.
For me, the big thing is that I love traveling, either in my own vehicle or on the train. I prefer to travel on my own, and when I have my campervan, that will be great!!
2 weeks ago, I bought a bluetti eb55 and the vango double heated sleeping bag! Im still yet to try them out in the cold, today (17th Nov) seem the coldest day we've had yet up in the northeast, me and my little lad will be heading out soon for a night to test them out... I have however got a mini slim oil radiator as a backup... 😅👍🏻
Get a USB extension cable, as the cable isn’t very long and you could pull it out. That’s what I am doing now I’ve tested it. When I took it out the bag in the video, that was the first time I had done so 🤣 Really pleased with it
@StaycationLifestyle yeah my next buy was a 2m USB extension cable after seeing how short the one is that's attached to the bag 😅... I've also got a small 5v powerbank from Argos that was around 18 quid to try and see how long it'll last, should fit in the little side pocket too 👍🏻
a heated blanket is ok for sleeping but other time in the van its not always the best a deisel heater is a game changer can be expensive to get someone to fit them but worth it
What I want to know is what type of insulation will keep the heat in the longest, so for example heat the van before bed then turn it off and wake up the next morning without the air temperature having dropped more than a bit
For a small van with a mix of surfaces it isn’t easy. The insulation on the metal panels can include sound deadening, 12mm Thermo liner, insulation quilt and then carpet. However you then have the glass all around the van and if you have a poptop then you have the canvas to thermo wrap too. It’s not easy to insulate fully, just do what you can and get a warm duvet or sleeping bag. As it’s a small van, they heat up very well and a lot turn the heating off before bed and have a comfortable night
The heater is nice when you are just sitting inside the van, reading a book, watching a movie, doing some remote work, cooking,... The heater is nice to warm you up before going to sleep, the heater is great to warm the van as a waking up service, but at night a decent quilt and matress and maybe a beany keep me/ us plenty warm and the heater is off, or maybe in frost protection mode. With the heater on at night i feel guilty leaving plenty of ventilation open,.. All the outside insulation,... It’s a little warmer and you have far less condensation on the windows, but,.. You bother to find a place with a nice view, park the car, and put the insulation outside to live in a dark bunker?.. in the rain/ snow it's a wet mess that takes a lot of space, you need to get out in the cold/ rain to place/ remove the covers,.. Inside isolation is a bit colder and has more condensation on the windows but It’s far easier to store/manage, and as you don't need to get out to adjust it you can easily change it,.. In a properly insulated and ventilated motorhome with isolated windows and skylights,.. covering the unisolated, drafty front completely is a good idea, in a drafty ( pop top) campervan where non of the windows are isolated i find the benefits do not outweigh the disadvantages,..
Great vlog… try the AVID heated sleeping bag, 5 season , not cheap… but these are used by carp fishermen .And they look great..keep up the good work. Also try STOOV ,heated blanket electric hot water bottles and heated pads..
Hello, few month ago you were saying that you are thinking that you might go for a T7 California in the future, are you still on that or have you changed your mind? ty

It is lovely to get back into a nice warm van that’s for sure.

insulation, window covers and a little oil filled radiator work the best. a heated blanket is also a nice touch.
Different setups suit different people 👍🏼

🫣 How low were though temperatures?
An FYI: a river rock can explode when heated.

@@Morio412 That’s certainly an alternative way of doing it 👍🏼
What a great idea 👍

@@stevelamb9453 a heated blanket won’t help with the atmosphere, as I mentioned towards the end

i have a ororo heated gillet. It is so warm that the battery is simply not required.
😀 They are worth it then? I’ve been considering them. There is so much choice
@@StaycationLifestyle Correction - it is a 'Lifebee' heated vest. Same kinda thing though. Got it off Amazon back in 2020.
