I had the pleasure of having a phone call with Bas a few years ago. It started out as a business call but once he realised I was an MMA nut, he enthusiastically stayed on the line with me way past our topics of business and just shot the shit about the UFC for about half an hour. I'll never forget that. Very cool guy.

Bas is awesome. I know he has been known to Mma fans, even us casuals, for a long time. It's crazy how he never broke out into the mainstream. The guy is gold.
He is a devout Catholic. Bas therefore understands that Joe Rogan's Agnosticism & Humanist Libertarianism are irrational expressions of the Modern Enlightenment and the depravity that it brings.
Watching fighters eat a prime Pedro Rizzo leg kick was like seeing boxers get hit by prime Mike Tyson. Just this bewildered state of shock, unable to comprehend what just happened to them, and the horror of realizing it's going to happen again.

Well, nobody needs to throw an open hand strike in MMA because closed fist strikes are legal. Bas developed his particular style of open hand strikes because the rules in Pancrase did not allow closed fist strikes.
As a kickboxer in the 80s I learned how to throw leg kicks from a Muay Thai fighter. It was a new area for me being that I was a Black belt in TKD. I was amazed as well as hooked on throwing leg kicks. But I was no where near the subject of this vide as far ads power. Later hen I became a cop I got into a legit fight with a drug dealer. He landed a punch only for me to retaliate with a leg kick. His body immediately crumbled. From that point putting hands cuffs in his was like taken candy from a baby! That was 36 years ago, I have tried to locate the Muay Thai fighter to thank him sadly the years that have passed made that desire unsuccessful.

I'm not really into fighting but certain fighters are absolutely magnificent. You have to watch them. And Chuck Liddel has to be one the most iconic fighters of my time. This guy would dodge a punch and somehow knock the other guy out. I could go on but Chuck was on the thumbnail.

Me and a group of my buddies used to get UFC and WWE PPVs pretty much every month starting in the late-90s - sometime in 98 or early 99 - and we did that for over a decade. We saw A LOT of great fights in that time. That was a great time for the UFC.
We did that too with the UFC. About the same time frame. Good memories. Back then PPV's weren't available in small towns. At least in my area. We had to go to a friend's house that lived in a bigger city. We did that for about 10 years. Little by little everyone went their separate ways. I thought Tony/Khabib might get us back together. I'd send clips of those guys. The response was positive. Looked like we might all get together for a PPV. If they would have had it the November before covid, it would have happened. Instead they delayed it to April, and we all know how that turned out.
I know the Bonner/Griffen fight put the UFC on the map but I had been a huge fan for over a decade at that point. I couldn’t wait those couple of months after the PPVs for the fights to get released on VHS. Luckily most people didn’t know about MMA back then and ESPN never covered it so it wasn’t that hard to have someone not spoil the cards for me.
I had the pleasure of meeting Bas in Great Lakes, IL after I graduated boot camp in 2007. He and a few other MMA fighters came on base to talk with us new sailors. It was a really awesome experience.
