    Definitely my preferred review style. Unboxings are fun to watch, but I want to hear from experience. Having both in the same video is perfect. It also helps keep me from impulse buying. Sometimes.... 😆

    Most honest and best reviews on the tube. I can't stand first impression videos. They are meaningless. One can't truly have a well informed opinion if they don't use the product. Spot on review. Thank you!!!

    Coarse-ground pigments and a lot of lithopone in some of them I would say. Disappointing on watercolour paper but on their own swatch-card they do look very pretty which is quite interesting. I have always loved the total honesty of all of your reviews, especially when sent a product to review. Sadly that integrity is lacking among reviewers of late but it’s nice to see it is alive and well :)

      SO agree. Lindsay is great about being positive and even when she isn't thrilled she will try to find what is good about it and try to find a group of people it might work for. I so trust whatever Lindsay has to say. Some other you tubers you need to be careful that being subsidized creates a bias on what they have to say.

    After playing (practicing) with the cheaper watercolors I decided to treat myself to a Koi set. OMGOODNESS! It has been so much fun! For a while I thought it was my technique that prevented the colors from mixing, bumping, exploding the way I had seen others do. Then I became aware of the differences in paint through videos like these! Thank you!!

    As soon as I saw the tin, I searched for it on Amazon. Unfortunately, I already have paints with no flow. Good-bye, cute tin. Thanks for the review, Lindsay! Hopefully the company will take your ideas to heart.

      2 years later, sadly they didn't. They raised the price instead, while the paints are still the same cheap crap. People should really avoid these. The company also lied to another youtube artist about the lightfastness of these, claiming they were lightfast. These are cheap dye based paints. No way these are lightfast, lol. So yeah, avoid.

    There have been big improvements in budget art supplies in the past three years. Sometimes there have been gratifying surprises. People have been taking up artistic pursuits after years of being away from the art world, or coming to paint and crafts with no background at all. Thank you for being willing to examine the budget materials, being honest about what you find, and encouraging us all to be better consumers, more self examined artists, and to have more fun with what we choose. Thank you for helping educate me about what is helpful in UA-cam videos and what's helpful in my watercolor kit. You're superb.

    You are amazing!! Ty for reviewing these- I asked about them a week or 2 ago... The review was fantastic bc I learned more about Water color paints in general, how to determine quality (as much as I can as a rank amateur 😂)& you even explained how to make the best out of them in a way I was looking for (journals). All I usually hear is "use cold press' for traditional, expected results. Your suggestions put watercolors in a whole new light! You are the best teacher!!👍👌😊 Oh! almost forgot, I purchased the Pretty Excellent from your review & was so pleased! A great value, low cost but good quality.TY again!

    I used cheap brushes from Sugarcraft to do my watercolors, they are soft golden taklon brushes and did the trick. I guess I didn't read it properly I just saw cheap brushes for sale and the colour of the handles caught my eye, and I just brought it. It all boils down to different marketing purposes. And I'm enjoying the brushes more than the ones that come with the cheap sets of paint. Thank you for the reviews love them as always.

    Hugely helpful as always, especially the info about thirsty paint. I have noticed that the Windsor Newton Cotmans are like boiled hard candy and really shiny and that less expensive paints have that matt aspect. I recently tried out a 36 tin of 'Hethrone' which I quite enjoyed, even though there were quite a few deja view 'I just swatched this colour' moments. but hey I paid £9 (say $13) for . I basically bought it for the tin and the half pans to refill but was pleasantly surprised.

    I know I'm late with my comment. I watched a more recent video on using these paints which was favorable. It was good to compare your video to that one. I'm not a fan of gritty paints so I'm glad I watched both videos to compare.
    Edit I haven't drawn lines to test for transparency. I will have to remember that for future swatching.

    I love an unboxing! That said, your experience and opinion is so so valuable! I never miss swatching videos they are somehow so soothing and satisfying. But you can't really tell a lot from swatches. When you were talking about them being chalky and thirsty, I thought I wonder if they would do well in bible journaling? Lol I'm glad you mentioned that. I my first watercolors was a set of panned masters touch paints from hobby lobby. They were so chalky but I still use them when im making junk journals. I like yo paint on book pages and then craft with those papers. A flower, a swirl or just splotches looks so pretty once they are turned into pockets tucks and ephemera. If I use my cotmans or my Paul Ruben s they move and bleed allot and seem to buckle they book pages more than my cheap chalky paint.

    Judging by your painting samples along with your description and existing deep knowledge of the medium, I would say your review was fair and honest. This is a strange comment - but it comes from a heart that loves watercolours and got some pondering: you have earlier put out that if we find a white label product then you would love if we would give feedback. I think that the Grabie palettes are being produced at the same factory in Hong Kong that produce the Artistro. Don't know if you got both palettes but here is where it get a bit stranger: my Artistro doesn't seem to behaive the same as yours so it raise the question: are paint offered for sale in Europe not the same as the paint offered for sale outside EU?. I have before noticed how paints for the crafters market have had to change label to be sold inside EU - example; the black Artsy fan palette was unavailabe but instead we could by it under the name Pencilmärch and the palette was white and not black - so some kind of product change was made. It just make me wonder since it will be a game changer for people from EU basing their shopping on American reviews?. I did a recent review on my channel and my Artistro got seperating pigments and to me it doesn't look like your palette got that issue - but I could have gotten a different batch?.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  Рік тому +2

      It could very well be. I know some ingredients are restricted in some counties. I also find some white label products vary from batch to batch or some companies switch factories after the teviews come out. It really is buyer beware with some of these.

      @staceydailey6394 3 роки тому +1

      Yep! I think they just work well for bible journaling and planners and crafters. I never understood why they would pay so much for the prima paints. I think it's because as crafters we love a collection. Prima had cute packaging and always releasing another set with new colors. They are geared more for crafters than artist we artist will mix the color we want, a crafter wants to pick a color. They are less into the science and more into the fun. I'm myself am both and never seem to have the time or space to do much of either

    • @bonnieallen2658

      I regret buying 4 sets of Prima water colors. But I still use them for making cards, just not for anything else. At least I gifted my beginner student sets I got from Michael’s. Now I am wondering if I should buy some watercolor markers, or hold out for some Daniel Smith watercolors

    • @michelleb4697
      @michelleb4697 3 роки тому

      @@bonnieallen2658 I think it depends on what you want to do with them. I find watercolor markers good to get a card done quick, tube paints are a lot more set up, planning and clean up! And of course there are the PH Martin liquid watercolors that are fast becoming my favorite.

    Maybe made by the same company who make Master's Touch. They are very "thirsty" and hard to rewet. The extruded colors seem to have more binders, which makes sense. I love my Doodle Bug poured half pans, though!! Does the lid insert that holds the brush etc pop out. if so that might be a good mixing area. (I mentioned the Doodle Bug paints only because I saw you review them and got a set. They're the bomb!!)

  • @jeankellner4314

    Looks like a fun set. Neat that it comes with the paper. I prefer when you can use an area in the tin for mixing colors. Those pretty tins and packages with extra stuff like paper and brush/pencil, eraser, etc., are always tempting. But . . . I didn't like the way the swatching colors looked and I would stick to Van Gough or Paul Rubens if I were getting a cheaper pan of paint than the professional grades, I think. . . but I am still new so . . . I love my Paul Rubens pink tins of 24 colors and also the 24 sparkly colors -- though I haven't used those sparkly ones much yet and I thought I would. It's always fun to see, though. Looking at your paintings, I can see that those paints aren't as good in their look. Oh, good idea about use for Bible Journaling. I just got a Bible I can do that in and I have been afraid to mess up the Bible with my watercolor paints because I am not good yet at control, etc. I wish they'd sell that tin empty to use it and not have the paints, though.

    I'm a packaging hoarder too, lol. Sometimes I buy stuff just for the box and of course I save all the cute ones.

      I felt the same! I would love to have it to keep my brushes and favorite pencil in. I was sad when I had to pass these up just due to the wonderful tin.

    Very interesting! Maybe drop the price and market as a craft paint. Card makers could probably really use something like this since cardstock is the usual substrate for that.

    Yeah even seeing them on screen they look like chalky paints Lindsay. They remind me more of the Asian style of watercolours where they tend to prefer a more opaque, chalky paint which is good for traditional Asian styles and I have even seen a lot of people prefer that flat opaque colour style for manga and anime.
    I personally paint landscapes and botanics so those paints would be no good for me, they just aren’t translucent or luminous enough.
    Great review Lindsay and your honest first impression and experienced opinion is always appreciated.
    Thank you. 😊

    As many have mentioned, we ALL appreciate the reviews you do. I trust the "pros and cons" that you mention. I don't buy new supplies without checking to see if you have reviewed them. So...have you reviewed POSCA markers? I couldn't find it but I apologize if you did and I missed it. Thanks!!

    This was INCREDIBLY helpful, I have been looking at higher end palettes and trying to convince myself to go for a middle ground (I liked this one) but I really want to get the most bang for my buck whether that's going higher end or just something sorta cheap on Amazon

    This is so fascinating; it really seems like the paints you have here are much chalkier than the ones I received (unless I am just not seeing it in mine, lol!). Could they have changed the formula in six months to improve them? Mine didn't flow either though! Also my pad of paper has a different cover, so maybe they have improved things. I've already lost the little brush somewhere in my studio, haha.

      @@thefrugalcrafter I ordered one and they were on sale for $15 so I grabbed 2 more!!! So worth it haha. This paint is pretty high quality for its price, it is almost identical to my Cotman watercolor which I already loved so so much but I get so much more paint with this palette for almost the same amount of money.

    I so enjoy your videos from unboxing to whatever you will do with it. I like the fact that you are honest in your reviews even though they sent you the product. I got an email today from someone wanting me to buy and try out their office chair. They would supposedly reimburse me if I gave a FIVE star review. So that tells me even a 4 star review wouldn't be reimbursed. I only do product reviews for things I get completely free and can leave an honest review. Same reason I don't usually click like at the beginning of a video. How do I know I will like it?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  3 роки тому

      Never do that. 2 reasons: it's against Amazon's terms and they might not reimburse you.
