all your videos are great. thank you
Bad heater coil on mine. Thanks legend
On some of the older model therea delay on call for heat so when you try to see if the board send power to the heating element you may need to wait too see if u have voltage
Hi Dave, I have an in line fuse blowing but the heat kit relays both seem to work. Any thoughts what I can do here?
Hello,
It could probably be broken heating coils:
ua-cam.com/users/shorts23syVQMPq-w?feature=share
Thanks for that, can u do one that short cycles in heat mode
Hey how are you doing?
Do you have any videos with friedrich or GE zoneline? I would appreciate if you could do those brands.
Hello Joseph
I do have some content on the GE ptac, but not Friedrich
What if the volt reading is 21.7 with the heater wires removed from the control board terminals? The reading is 0 when the wires are attached. Would it most likely be the control board? The continuity test passed. Thank you for your help.
Yeah, that definitely sounds like that board is out
Great, thank you. Looks like the volt reading should be 240 or I think it was 239 in your video. There are no fault codes and the self diagnostic ran successfully except for the heat
Thanks Dave for the amazing videos
I need your help I work in this hotel and lately I had a lot of Prada with restrictions they are 410a, my high pressure are more than 409 psi. My question what is the cause?
Thank you.. I would check to see if the condensor is clean or the rpms of the condensor motor
How do we get the heating coil out? Im new to the ptacs being i only really service medium to heavy commercial units
Hello
This is how to replace it
ua-cam.com/video/W49iqjFoIuA/v-deo.html
I'd check the transformer next. Its located directly behind the board housing
Hi Dave, question: do you have any videos on re-charging a Amana PTAC with freon yourself? We have a few older Amana PTAC units that are 3+ years old ; compressor kicks on but cold air is not blowing ; its only outside air. I researched that most PTACs are sealed systems but was wondering if they can be charged with freon to keep it blowing cold air? Or if once it runs out of freon, you have to buy a new PTAC. Thanks!
Hey Tony
I don't have any videos on charging the refrigerant. Now if that unit is less than 5 years old you can get it repaired under warranty(assuming it is a refrigerant problem). If not, you'll have to know for sure that the unit does not have a big leak because of it does, that refrigerant is going to leak out again
@@PtacSolutions Thanks Dave! It looks to be a older unit - at least 3 to 5 years old. Do you have any videos on how to test for leaks in PTACs? And how to charge them? Or do you recommend just getting new ones if they are that old? Thanks. :)
Thanks for your help, Dave. Question. If I am not getting any voltage from the board across heater terminals after removing wires, what is the next step? I know my heater elements and limits are okay after checking for resistance or continuity.
That's pretty much it. I would get that control board replaced. Usually it's either the board or the heater itself
I just checked for voltage across heater 1&2. I did not remove the wires. I will do so tomorrow and wait for 5min then do a reset. I saw this other video recommending removing all the wires up top on board reconnect them, turn off run switch hold heat & cold down together for a few seconds then flip run switch back on, wait for light next to the off button to come back on I will also try that. Thanks@@PtacSolutions
I don't have those options/terminals on the zonelines I'm working with. Could you show us this test on a ge zoneline board by chance?
How often should the heat coils cycle on and off? My limit switches get to about 400 degrees and trip and come back on at around 100 degrees all in less than a minute. Is that normal? Amana PTAC PTH153E35A
What wrench sizes should I have to work on ptac
Hello Nawfal
For the Amana units 1/4 and 5/16 nut drivers are very common, for the rest are phillip screws
yes what would be the problem if you get power to heating element but still no heat coming out
Hello, how about continuity? If you are not getting continuity then the problem is the heater Element
Hope you respond 🙏🏾. My unit will heat for the test when I hold + - and tap heat twice (it tests all functions heat & cold) But when I call for heat nothing happens, just fan blowing but element doesn’t get hot at all??? Please lend some insight..
Hey Djorn
Is the unit same as in the video?
Dave good day to you
Question, how to remove the Ur in the ptac
Hey Raul
Sorry Ur? Is that a error code?
So what is the next step? I have a similar unit not producing heat and the coil and board check out. Thanks
Hello, is the unit not blowing any heat or is the unit not heating up the room?.. because if heating coil have continuity and the board is sending power to the heater, than I would look for airflow restrictions that may be setting off the limit switch( dirty air filter, evaporator coil, blocked air discharge etc)
@@PtacSolutions starts up, reversing solenoid kicks on, but not producing any heat at all. Actually i checked again and the coil checks out but theres no power coming from the board. Does that mean the board needs replacing?
@@rip-vanwinkle okay since this unit is a heat pump, turn up the temp at least 6° or so above room temperature so the unit will send power to the heater coil, give about 3 to 5 min (for delay), check power again from the board. If you don't get any power change control board. As for the heat pump also depends on how cold it is outside
@@PtacSolutions the unit is actually pulled out of the wall right now so its up to room temp but I ran it 5 mins like you suggested and still nothing. Looking at the pc board i see a burn mark next to the module that controls the left heater terminal. Im guessing thats where the problem is
@@rip-vanwinkle thats is definitely the problem
Thank you for your videos. I have an Amana that blows heat for awhile, but then completely shuts down. I typically have to unplug it, reset the plug and sometimes just leave it sit for days. After the reset (or waiting if the reset doesn't work), it blows hot for awhile and then the pattern repeats. Any ideas? Limit switch?
Hey Steve
It definitely sounds like it could be that limit switch, but I would check for:
- Dirty evaporator coil
- Dirty or blocked air discharge area
- Dirty blower wheel or
- Weak blower motor
Any one or all of these could be setting off that limit switch
@@PtacSolutions Thank you for the quick reply. So I listed the symptoms a bit incorrectly. I will give you the correct info and I was wondering if it narrows things down. The PTAC will be heating fine and then suddenly only be blowing cold air non stop (like maybe it is trying to reach the set temp but never gets there because its blowing cold?). I then have to unplug it and wait for sometimes days before it turns back on and repeats the cycle. Surprisingly, it has been running great the last 2 days, but I have no idea what changed.
Hi Dave, great videos! Had a question to ask: I have a few Amana 9000 BTU units (the same one you are showing here) where heating STOPPED working in winter time. Called tech center and they said test for continuity. If continuity is good, then its the actual heating coil that needs to be replaced. Question: so if there is no continuity when you test (e.g. "OL" code on voltmeter display) then you need to replace control board? Thanks!
Hey Tony
Ok, so if you have continuity that means that the heater coil is good, now if there's no continuity that means something is open, ( OL means open line) may be a broken heater coil or a open limit switch.... So if you do have continuity check the wiring, if that's OK the problem is the control board
Thanks David! :)
Continuity= continuous path! That's how I remember it
How u doing an a ac guy that just starting working on ptac unit am in Virginia Norfolk were do u buy these part from is there a site on line u can guide me too
Hey Rodney
I'm doing good, it's good to hear from you... on the Amana ptacs you can order from them directly their number is: 1 (877) 376-0214
The other ptac I just look on line, like for example, repair clinic
Hi Dave I have a question. I was not getting any heat or cold air. I have replace the heating element with limit switches because they where burn and broken. Also check capacitor and was bad so I replace it. No I run my unit at 71 and the heat gets higher than 71 and only runs for couple of minutes then start blowing cold air. Do you suggest anything I may be missing.
Hey Osman
Ok, question.. is the unit blowing out heat or just room temperature air? If it is heating, make sure you have a clean evaporator and good airflow across the heating coil(no obstructing). If all that is good try to clean the yellow thermistor.
@@PtacSolutions yes is blowing heat if you set it at 71 goes way over 71 I will say 90 and then heat shuts down and starts blowing room temperature air. The evaporator is been and is no obstruction of air.
@@osmanhernandezhernandezosm6864 sounds like a problem with your thermistors
Ours does the intermittent heat also. Model #PTH153B50AE MFG #P1248849R. The inside along with the fan looks clean. The heat shuts off but the fan keeps running. As I had read earlier someone stated they tapped on their control panel and the heat can back. I tried it on ours and the heat comes back on. I haven’t checked the wire on the control panel. Do you think it could be the mother board. The heat elements looks good. I didn’t see any discoloration, etc. Thanking you in advance for any assistance.
Hey Terry
So does the heat work and then goes off ? If so for how long
@@PtacSolutions yes it does go off. It varies. Sometimes within a couple of minutes, sometimes hours. Thanks for getting back.
Is the evaporator clean?
Yes
My new PTAC doesn’t heat. No hot air come out. Is this normal functioning?
Hey Gerry
Is your unit a Amana brand?
@@PtacSolutions no 😕
Hello. Because the a/c . Does not turn off automatically . I have to turn it off with the termostat because it doesnt turn off by it self .
Hello Hugo
That sounds like a faulty thermostat
Hi David, I have an Amana air conditioner heat pump mod# AH183E35AXAA window unit that it's blowing cold air , but no heat, even though it's not a hotel commercial model will trouble shooting it be same as what you are showing? I have the same multi meter as in your video. I appreciate any help you could share, thanks in advance.
Hey James
Yeah you can troubleshoot the same way, the only difference would be the electrical layout.
@@PtacSolutions thanks for getting back to me, when you say electrical layout, what are you talking about? I'm hoping to find schematics for it. I've removed the unit from the casing, now to research on location of the heating element and limit switches to it.
Just that the control are going be set up differently but the concept is the same
The heater should be by the evaporator coil.. open the control panel look for the wire that run that way, should be 2 thick wires
Morning Dave,
I have a unit that when calling for heat the fan will not turn on, but if I spin it by hand it will start turning?
Thank you,
John
Hey John
That sounds like it's a capacitor that's bad.. is your unit older than 2010?
@@PtacSolutions no, it’s brand new. We just bought it last year.
Hey John
If the unit is less than a year old, it's covered under warranty. Amana gives a one year full coverage on electric problems
@@PtacSolutions thank you
You're welcome
I have a gree ptac that heats and cools when not hooked up to the thermostat but it wont heat when hooked up to the thermostat? Any ideas
Hey yugi
You might have a problem with the thermostat or wire.. if you can, bypass the thermostat by removing the wires, join only the W wire with the R and G wire if heat works, then the problem is the thermostat... if you do decide to do it let me know how it goes
You said after testing. That this particular unit has something else. What is it
Hello, to be honest I don't really remember. This video was posted about 6 months ago but I believe it had a refrigerant leak
How would you know if board is bad ? Here is my issue unit will come on runs for while then heat stops fan continues if you tap on control board heat comes back on . Must repeat to keep working ? No loose wires etc ?
Hello... ok let's use process of elimination 1) we need to make sure the evaporator coil and blower wheel is clean for better air flow. 2) we need to make sure the blower motor is not weak or low rpms... either one of those can set off the limit switches.
Everything is clean
@@timkummer1330 ok, how about the blower speed
@@timkummer1330 check your capacitors, some units use the caps for initial blower motor and ac startup
What was wrong with this particular unit? I have the exact problem. Board tests good and coils have continuity but still no heat.
Hello
Can you confirm that you have 208/230v at the the board from heater 1 to heater 2?
@@PtacSolutions 230
how to bypass the heat pump and run on electrical heat coil only
Hey Dale
Do you know how to get into the settings?
And if you don't mind me asking, why you want to bypass the heat pump
Yes the heat pump blows cold air or room temp air and my residences would like hotter air and less noise
i have a ptac with the knobs i can barely feel the heat or air blowing what could be my problem
Do you know what brand is it by any chance? It would be a little easier to help you in the right direction
my supplier sent me a new control board and its not the right model. i have no where to plug int he condenser fan. so it shuts itself off after a few mins.
Hello. You can connect the high speed(black wire) to the same terminal as the compressor with a double male female adapter
What was the issue on this unit?
Hey Antonio
Nothing on this unit, I was just showing what to look for if you had had a unit that was not heating
the unit is a 16k btu
What is going with this unit.
Hey Leo
Nothing with this unit, I was just showing what to look for in case your ptac was not working
@@PtacSolutions okay
I have prime air unit .
It's almost brand new but the heat is not working I checked the limit switch the wiring and everything you have showed on the video and I don't hear any click.
I also been doing this type of work for 15years.
What do you think is the problem
So if this ptac is working.... where is you ptac not heating troubleshooting??
Hello, this was just a tutorial video to show what to check for when the unit is not working/heating. Thanks for watching
@@PtacSolutions I see, thanks for showing as well. Good video
What happened there?
Hello, this video was made to show what to look for when the ptac unit is not heating... this particular unit was working normal
