This song helped me with my depression and anxiety years ago. I still come back to it every so often when I’m down in the dumps. Thank you so much for this song Man Man.
About 6 or 7 years ago I had just graduated from college, was working a job I hated, driving 45 minutes to an hour one way, oftentimes through the snow in my crappy '97 Aerostar van. I used to get off work around 2 AM and the radio station I would listen to would inevitably play this song on my way home. I always felt at peace listening to this on a quiet night. I get nostalgic for those days for some reason, especially when I hear this song.
I'm having a horrible week, I thought I wouldn't survive it, but I hummed this song to myself all day today and it made everything seem better and brighter. :) Thanks, guys!
I was so proud of these guys for this. I'd been following them since they were doing tiny gigs in the mid 00s in art galleries. And then they charted with this one.
I'm a sudden newcomer to the band. I was 12 years late to the party with Vampire Weekend. Now I find myself 17 years too late to the party with these guys. I'm starting at the beginning and am already finding gems I missed. Falling in love with Gold Teeth at the moment.....And if not for Head On, I might have missed them completely.
And now Werewolf....Holy frick. How fun is this one? Most of the song reminds me of the condo I stayed in about 10 years ago on the beach in Puerto Rico. I'll stop now. Would hate to start irritating you just when we've become best friends...haha!
You know that question about the desert island and you can only have one luxury, it'd have to be music for me man. It hits you like nothing else, the most powerful force for conveying emotion. I love hearing the right song when you're having a shitty day and you can't help but smile

Left my ex about two weeks ago and I have been avoiding listening to my favorite band (man man). Well, I can’t avoid it, only this band can heal my heart, slow as it may be.
This song has been stuck in my head for days, thank God I found it because I was getting sick of hearing the main riff from this song by itself over and over again.
I hope you find this someday E. I know things never worked out but I just want to thank you for introducing me to this song. Mistakes were made on both sides and Im sorry for my part.
I've always loved this song and video. The actress that played the mermaid just passed away on May 18, 2022. She was in the movie "Night Tide" with Dennis Hopper. RIP Linda Lawson.
I wish people would quit complaining about how Man Man isn't who they used to be. Are you who used to be 8 years ago? Bands grow and progress just like people. I still hear my old Man Man in a lot of their new stuff and appreciate the newness they bring to each and every album. People need to stop holding on what they were and appreciate who they are. I LOVE MAN MAN FO LIFE!
This is a song that helped me get over such a terrible breakup from my ex. I felt lost after her for literally a year after I moved out. This song now is a warning to me. Guard that heart. Mermaids are evil.
Just heart this on 'The Exorcist' and Shazamed it while it played during one of the scenes. I have to say I fell in love with this immediately! Love it! Thanks for posting it.
for the past two years ive been listening to EDM music.. and its been way too long since ive just turned on the local rock radio station.. on my way home at 3 am in the morning, reflecting and cruising.. this song was on, it really explained what i had been feeling at that moment.. and i absolutely fell in love with this song!
The whole album, where this single comes from, is one of those rare ones, in which all songs are individually enjoyable and I listen to it over and over again in it's entirety. Absolutely incredible.
Earlier this year, I had this song in my head for ages. I recently remembered it, and had to look it up. This song is incredible. The feelings and memories and ideas man, ridiculously good.
I don't know if it's quite possible for me to explain how much I love this song. It certainly isn't right now, when I'm tired and fed up with things in general and cold- but even when I'm feeling sweet and rested and full of life, there's a certain comfort to this song that defies words.
They've always had this sound but I've never heard anything so polished, simple and straight forward from them. Even the gravel of Honus' voice is more like sand. I still love the melody and the wordplay, and even the overtly positive message. Can't wait to hear the rest of the record.
There are a lot of songs that made me think of her, a lot of which were sadder than this one. But this is the one that still ties me in knots when I hear it. Hopefully she's still living by this song. Never let nobody take it over.
This is the song that brought me to Man Man. Is it wholly representative of the band? No, of course not. Nothing could be. But damn, it's a lovely little tune, and I'll always love it for bringing me to one of my favorite things in the universe.
Man Man is SO strongly nostalgic to me. Girlfriends, life experiences, changes, etc, all of it had Man Man backdrop. Ever since hearing Top Drawer whole driving around as a late teen at 2am I get a small sinking ache in my chest as soon as I hear the opening notes of any of my favorite tracks. Just hurts so good.

Possibly the best, most skillful and imaginative use of public domain footage for a music video EVER! (while starring Steve McQueen and Dennis Hopper!) Extra points that it's one of the greatest songs of all time.
Growing up I’ve been chasing everyone else’s dream and going to college for a career my family want me to do. I know they mean well but to live their dreams or so that they could be “proud” of me seems like poison when I’m older and I look back on life. It’s probably stupid but I’ve dropped out since then at 21 and have a office job lined up. I’m gonna use that money to fund what I want to do in this finite amount of time I have. Something about this song screams “BECOME YOU”.
Hi, curious if you are doing what you wanted to do today and what that is for that matter. Wishing you well! Also, love the Ito Ittosai profile pic. Vagabond is the best! Did it play a part in you choosing your own path?
Found out about Man Man through the song So It Goes. I've been going through a tough time lately, as I'm sure everyone is, I'm just glad I looked deeper into this artist. This song is hitting me hard, in a good way. Thanks Man Man.
I got to see Man Man do this live in Montreal about a month ago, and I must say that it was one of the best shows I've been to. I'm in love with metal and mainly listen to that sort of music, but I have 3 Man Man cds and they are pretty much memorized by heart! Love you guys!
The most awesome music video I've ever seen! The song and the film clips are perfectly matched up. I've watched this at least 20 times...it's mesmerizing!!
Heard this on a progressive station on the East End of Long Island. Fantastic! So glad it is here. The strings plucking throughout and just all of this piece. Well done!

I have almost committed suicide. Almost. I was literally looking for the song for my funeral then I found this song.I'm holding on to my heart when the whole world's bitter. I can't let nobody take it over. This song saved my life. I hope someone else can hear it
This video has always really reminded me the music video to Queen's "Under Pressure" with the use of clips from black and white horror flicks. And considering one of their live performances floating around on youtube is called "a night at the opera and a day at the races," a reference to two Queen albums, there's clearly some inspiration taken from Queen. And yet, Man Man's music isn't trying to copy Queen's style; to the contrary it's really original. Man Man sort of feels like the spiritual successor to Queen to me is all, and I'm grateful. That's a void in music that needs to be filled.
+David Vandermeer not disagreeing with the queen influence, but pointing out that night at the opera and day at the races are also both marx brothers movies.
I don't get why people are saying they've gone soft or pop...they have ballads on every album they've ever done... I like this...it's super catchy and has that sort of summertime listening vibe to it :)
Lively, catchy tune feels great. I'm liking the strings and organ behind the melody. Great to hear understandable lyrics, points clearly articulated - Wow!
i just love this song. my radio station plays several of their songs.. got to love public radio for having good taste in music.. just bought the album too..

It's such hard advice to follow, but after looping this almost all day, I feel a bit better about the breakup. Thanks, Man Man.

After playing this more times than I can count over the last couple of months, I've definitely concluded that this is my song of the year.

That's deep. But you do have a good reason for music.

Lyrics:
There's a knock at your door
You don't even recognize the stranger
It's you from before
Tryin' to warn you all about the dangers
There's a hole in your head
At least that's what everybody's guessing
It's why you're always misread
It's why you sleep but you never feel rested
You never get your rest in
Hold on to your heart
Hold it high above flood waters,
Hold on to your heart,
Never let nobody drag it under.
Hold on to your heart
Even when your body's bitter
Hold on to your heartt
Never let nobody take it over
Ever take it over
Ever take it over from you.
There's a call on the phone
You don't even recognize the number,
It's an old episode,
Of trying to put the lightening on the monster,
Of the life you have led,
That is always a mess
Are you dreaming of death
Are there ghosts in your chest,
Are you always so restless, yes you are
Is that hard?
Hold on to your heart
Hold it high above flood waters,
Hold on to your heart,
Never let nobody drag it under.
Hold on to your heart
Even when your body's bitter
Hold on to your heart
Never let nobody take it over
Ever take it over
Ever take it over from you.
Is it all a game
But bait and switch up your brains
And follow your leaders to hell
Is it all the same, in vein of insane,
As drinking from a poisoned well
And I need new skin for this old skeleton of mine
'Cause this one that I'm in
Let me down once again
I'm over time,
And I need new skin for this old skeleton of mine
'Cause this one that I'm in
Let me down once again
I'm over time.
Hold on to your heart
Hold it high above flood waters,
Hold on to your heart,
Never let nobody drag it under.
Hold on to your heart
Even when the whole world's bitter
Hold on to your heart
Never let nobody take it over
Ever take it over, ever take it over
Ever take it over, ever take it over
Ever take it over
Ever take it over from you.
Gracias 😊
Thank you for this song. It means more to me then I can describe in words.
