- Coming up one of rock greatest vocalists Ann Wilson of Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame band Heart tells the first hand account of a song that has become part of rock folk lore . the 70s classic, Barracuda Her record label Mushroom set up a publicity stunt that a radio promoter harassed her about implying a sexual relationship with there sister Nancy.. She was so outraged, so livid she went straight to her hotel room and wrote this seething rock masterpiece. This rocker tells us the story as well as several original members Steve Fossan and Michael Derosier and how guitarist Nancy Wilson pissed the band Nazareth off when she admitted to borrowing their riff when Heart was opening for them early on.

It’s time for another edition of our series revelations where iconic artists and band reveal the finest details behind the song and albums that have moved us from childhood to now. Today we get the story behind a little ditty from the 70s called Barracude from Ann Wilson of Heart… Also original band member bassist Steve Fossen and the song’s cowriter and drummer Michael Derosier...
Years after Heart formed They started to take over radio. It all started with their classic debut album Dreamboat Annie. Heart's first single from the album was "How Deep It Goes" , it didn’t do very well when it was released in Canada by the small Mushroom label in 1975. The second single, "Magic Man" (backed with "How Deep It Goes"), was first picked up for radio play by a station in Montreal while the band was on tour playing small club dates, In America, Crazy on You was the first single followed quickly by Magic Man with would become Heart’s first top ten hit and started a spark that would lead to 20 top 40 hits and 9 platinum albums and induction into the rock and roll hall of fame. Many would argue that the crown jewel of their classic catalog was the song that would come after they broke though with Crazy on You and Magic man. The ultra rock classic. Barracuda. It came from a crazy incident that was started by Heart’s label Mushroom. Ann Wilson tells the story . Her sister Nancy admitted a few years ago that she borrowed the riff from the band Nazreth She said and I quote we’d been opening for a band called Nazareth in Europe and also for Queen. And Nazareth had a hit with a Joni Mitchell song that they covered [in 1973] called 'This Flight Tonight' that had kind of that riff So we kind of borrowed that. And we made it into 'Barracuda.' And we saw the guys from Nazareth later and they were pissed. They said 'You took our riff!’. But as Nancy would say later everyone influenced everyone back then you borrow from what you love and then you make it your own. She also talked about how the guitar tone is very specific and she has had a tough time re creating it in concert.
As we go into the interview, I do Want to thank our sponsor Zennie Eyewear. Add some style to your life and look with the latest Zenni frames. - Розваги
Poll: What is your pick for the greatest "grab you by the throat" guitar riff from a 70s hit song?
Life's been good by joe walsh, and D.O.A. by Bloodrock the scariest song i've ever heard in my honest opinion.
Godzilla - Blue Oyster Cult
....well, since Ann mentioned how 70's Disco acts had to stay in their 'lane' in the 70's, I'm choosing.....Jeff "Skunk" Baxter's Guitar Solo on Donna Summer's 12" version of, "Hot Stuff"!! ....gotta give Donna SOME Rock cred, here.... ; ) ....
Ace of Spades (sorry, 1980 but close enough)
Too damn many: Iron Man, Working Man (Rush) Hair of The Dog (Nazareth), Poison Whiskey (Skynyrd), Blackhearted Woman (Allman Bros), No Fun (Iggy) . . . I can go on
I don't think any woman in rock can touch her. She's got a voice that is a force of nature. Let's not forget, she's 72 and still belting it when others have lost it.
She is still very beautiful, amazingly at her age.
@@johnstephens2826 Yes, she is!
She’s simply awesome.
Man that makes me feel old.
@@mikepalmer2219 Yeah, I know how you feel. The decades slip by too damn fast
Ann is still a vocal powerhouse even now! And, to all those nasty people that used to pick on her weight, you can only dream of having that voice, and that face! Aging goals.
A B S O L U T E L Y ! 👍🏼
Love heart. In my opinion, Heart is the greatest female hard rock band of all time. "Barracuda" is a rock classic. Ann Wilson is a great vocalist and definitely makes my list as one of the best female singers ever.
What a powerhouse of a voice she has. She makes it seem effortless too.
So true. Thanks!
Definitely one of, if not the, top female Rock singer of all time. My runners up would be Linda Ronstadt, Pat Benatar, Stevie Nicks, Tina Turner and Taylor Dayne.
She’s a badass!
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 Check out the Gretchen Wilson/Alice in Chains cover of Barracuda with Nancy Wilson on guitar. It`s the best live female vocal performance I`ve ever seen.
@@coolcat6303 Taylor Dane had a powerful voice
Have loved Heart since my early teens. In my 50’s now, and still a big fan!!! The misogyny, sexual harassment, and abuse displayed throughout the music and entertainment industries for decades is just disgusting. So glad Ann Wilson didn’t sit there and take it!!! Especially at a time when fighting back against that sort of disgusting behavior was definitely NOT the norm!!! Using her incredible talent, tenacity, and sheer intelligence, she fought back!!! I love Barracuda even more now!!!
Glad Ann and Nancy were able to rise above the sliminess. Just unreal how some people in "power" act so terribly.
In 83, saw Kansas and Heart as a double header. Both bands blew me away........ for a measly $10!!....... which gave me an awesome seat!
Thanks again for this, Professor!!
Wow for 10 bucks! Those were the days!
Dude. That is exactly what I miss. All the bands I saw in the '80s were about 20 bucks. The number is hard to conjure, but I think I saw Bowie on the Let's Dance tour for 28? Went alone because my friends thought that was an outrageous sum🤣😂
The Wilson sisters deserved better than that nastiness.
Wow, only $10 for two great bands? Now, this makes me die to go back to 1983 even more.
Professor, thank you for bringing us the Queen Goddess of Rock. Anne is phenomenal and her sister Nancy is right up there too. Completely loved everything they did back in the eighties. Hearing Anne's story of Barracuda reinforces the strength of her will to stand up in the culture and society at the time. What an intelligent and beautiful woman she is!
She’s such a nice and intelligent lady.
70s maybe?
I couldn't have said this better!
I was a little girl when their music first hit and one of my older sisters bought Dreamboat Annie (of course their others to follow), and I loved them. I was lucky to grow up with music from different genres and eras. If it was good, it played; if it was great, it played a LOT.😁👍👏👏👏
If your reading this Ann, you influenced so many young men who listened to your music; amazing bad ass voice that inspired us to seek out such a confident, powerful, and beautiful woman as yourself when we grew up! Thank you 🙏
I'm sure she read it and will be contacting you soon. That's the way it always works, right?
Barracuda clearly brought the Wilson sisters straight into serious rock status- starting with that epic intro! They opened the gates wider for the likes of Pat Benatar and Chrissy Hynde, who each brought fresh new dimensions to the genre. Good questions asked Professor!
Exactly right!
Agree with you 100%. Great comment. I may be younger because my eyes were opened by Chrissy Hynde. She is 100% woman, and 100% rocker.
And Cyndi Lauper, Madonna…
I started school in 1970. The 70s were an amazing decade for music...such a wide variety of stuff on the radio stations. One of my clearest memories of the 70s was listening to my battery powered radio on a cool southern night under the bright stars and hearing Stevie Nicks singing Sarah. It felt like the song was echoing through the universe.
Don't forget about The Runaways, who everyone seems to forget.
Heart is my second favorite band of all time. Ann Wilson is my favorite female vocalist of all time.
RIP Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac. Such a shame. Such a talented musician. She will be sadly missed but never forgotten.
Indeed. R.I.P.

Aside from Nazareth's "This Flight Tonight", other songs which use a similar riff include "Keep Yourself Alive" by Queen, "Stained Class" by Judas Priest, and arguably "Powerslave" by Iron Maiden".
Lol. Almost EVERYHING by Iron Maiden
Can hear it!
Barracuda absolutely kicks butt and it really showcased Heart’s musical chops. Great album too-a must for every collection! Love the way Ann tells the story in an articulate and matter-of-fact way. Great to hear the back story! Thx Adam!
Thanks Robster. Always appreciate your take!
See Gretchen Wilson and Alice in Chains` live cover of Barracuda on UA-cam. It`s scary impressive.
Kicks butt indeed! I love using this as a comeback song.
That band stood out, not just for the Wilson sisters, but for a sense of allegiance to the ethos of Rock. You got to experience the whole spectrum of possibilities of the genre, very Beatles or Zep-like in that fashion.
You nailed it Bill. Exactly right.
Trailblazing band.
I went to school with Mike Derosier back in 1966-71. He was kind, intelligent, handsome, and a top musician even then. He and his mates used to practice in a neighbor’s barn. I can still hear his drum playing today.
These ladies were pioneers in female rock, and I felt no shame in loving them right alongside the folk, disco, and Motown artists of the day. Go, Nancy! Thanks for this great interview, Adam. Have an excellent day!
Thanks Jill! Have a great day!
Ann and Nancy were icons for sure.
Those two ladies are some serious rock n roll bad asses. Grew up on their music in the 70’s and in high school in the 80’s when they were still relevant and popular. Hall of fame well deserved.
Please tell Ann Wilson that she will always stand as the best female voice in rock-n-roll. And Nancy never got the credit for her almost uncoverable talent. Most people won't even attempt to play that intro to "Crazy On You". The talent here was amazing. I love you, Ann!
Pat Benetar is just as equal
Anne and Nancy killed it at The Kennedy Center in their tribute to Zep on Stairway! You go ladies. Lubs ya lots. I bought their (Heart) first album as soon as it hit the stores. I wore out several copies.
That was just so powerful for me I shed a few tears at the end. 😭
I revisit that performance often. They blew the roof off!
I guess the feud is over.
Certainly caused Robert to shed a few tears.
Ann and Nancy are big Zepp fans, having Jason behind the drums was the icing on the cake
They absolutely nailed it. Robert Plant and Jimmy Page reaction to it was so telling.
As a child of the 70's and 80's I loved Heart. I wanted to be Ann Wilson when I grew up. FYI I failed - I'm an IT professional, but in my car I still sing along. :)
Heart was such an inspiration for me in the 70's. The only female lead rock band in a sea of men. This clap back classic messaged fighting back for many teen girls. Don't just get mad, get even! Legends.
And they rock kicked some ass.
@@1945tigers that they did!
Ann Wilson is the Queen of Rock! And at 72, she is still out there rocking and and making new, kick-ass music! Love, love, love her! Heart is legendary! 💜🎸🤘🏻💜
I saw Heart in 1986 and they opened with Barracuda. It blew the roof off of the arena. It was one of the best openers I've ever seen.
Heart is probably in the top five greatest bands in history. Amazing guitar and drum work that never gets old and one of the strongest yet soothing voices ever, male or female. I love ❤
I'm right there with ya Jim!
Ha ! Top 5 ? Are you having a laugh? Tell me, where do they fit in to the top 5 which is occupied by The Beatles/Led Zep/ The Who/ Pink Floyd/ Rollling Stones...Great band, really great voice...but top 5...never.
I heart Heart! ☺️
Actually not even in the conversation when it comes to top 5 greatest bands.
I think something like the top 5 greatest bands is a personal choice. It's not like you can get everyone to agree on any list when it's subjective like that. We all have our own experience of these bands and what they mean to us and what we think they mean to the world or the history of music but you can't quantify it completely. There will always be an element of subjectivity to it so it's open to personal bias.
"Dog and Butterfly" is my favorite Heart song. "There's the Girl" is my favorite guilty-pleasure Heart tune, and "Barracuda" is my air-drum favorite.
I was blown away by Ann Wilson's version of Stairway to Heaven at the Led Zep Kennedy Center Honors. I'd be hard-pressed to come up with another voice that could "out-Plant" Plant!
Thanks for another great video, Adam!
Just from hearing the opening guitar riff, you know that you're in for a musical treat! 🎸😍
It's such a great riff.
It’s MESMERIZING.
I have always had a HUGE crush on Nancy Wilson. I used to watch Heart's videos over and over just to see her. I think the way she played the guitar made her even hotter to me. This is one of the first bands that I got my kids to start listening to. I still have my "Dreamboat Annie" CD that I bought back in the 90s at Walmart! Rock on brother!
Ha ha. Awesome. Thanks Kraig.
Great comment! Dreamboat Annie on CD! You are crackin' me up, bro. We had a cassette, that we WORE OUT, flippin it and flippin it. (also being kicked around in the car's foot wells didn't help 😅)
@@Redmenace96 I still have the cassette.
Even nowadays, she looks stunning.
I'm all about the drums on this song! Mike Derosier just KILLED it!
I know, right?! Amazing!
This song was my introduction to Heart. My Uncle had an 8track tape of different artists on it that Riff really got my blood pumping. Then those vocals came out and I was hooked ever since. Pure joy to listen to the music of these very talented ladies and the guys that helped them get started to the lvl of Legends.
Ann and Nancy are the undisputed Queens of Rock and Roll.
Nicely done. I never knew any of this back story, just thought of it as a ripping rock anthem. Being a female rock star in the 1970s was certainly not an easy path. The constant struggle to be taken seriously as an artist rather than as just some nice eye candy must have really sucked. It gives me more appreciation for their accomplishments to understand this a little better.
Played the heck out of Little Queen for many years. Just love everything on that album. And adore Heart and both Wilson sisters - very talented ladies.
I KNEW it was going to be Barracuda! 😂 I had heard that song was about a recording company exec(s) and/or manager YEARS (decades) ago.
Great guess.
I always thought it was about someone being sexist.
Anne Wilson... one of THE best voices EVER!
Barracuda is a great song, and Little Queen is a brilliant album. As much as I like their 80s input, and I honestly believe that they had some great songs in that era, their 70s albums is still my to go to Heart albums.
Ann is simply a phenomenal singer and songwriter - and Nancy is equally great. The greatest sisters of the rock genre? Definitely in my opinion.
70s Heart is the best... By far.
It being a short list.... The Wilson sisters definitely top that chart! 🙂
Their 70s stuff just rocks.
Heart's 1970s work is my favorite, too. I used to rock out to their music starting as a tween. It is a big part of the soundtrack of my life! ~ Anastacia in Cleveland
Wow, I loved this episode! I grew up with all of these great bands but was just young enough that I didn't really understand context or backstory. Plus, with older brothers who were rock musicians I was influenced heavily by their tastes/approval. That said, I have always wanted to be able to belt it out like Ann Wilson.
Such a great role model.
One of your best episodes, Professor! Had kinda forgotten how hard Heart was!! Barracuda has outstanding riffs and great musicianship. The Ladies, and the band, just don't get the respect they richly deserve.
Thanks!
We just don’t really get this type of talent anymore. Sad but true.
Heart is getting more recognition now in 2022 than they were 35 years ago in 1987 when they were doing very well with their bad animals tour when they had about 110 concert dates.. the media was rigged and would never talk about how spirited and enjoyable heart was to see live in concert they just constantly talked about Ann's weight if they said anything at all ..the reviews were rigged back then... Ann and Nancy started out the bad animals tour with a lot of enthusiasm and by December of 1987 Ann was already talking about retiring from heart in a Miami News article according to Howard leese
No one can touch her voice. Simply amazing
I've been to so many concerts over the course of my Life, but seeing Heart on the "Bad Animals" tour had me wound up and ready to hit the stage and bow down to Anne Wilson like Wayne and Gsrth...I got restrained before I could...ah well, probably for the best...
Wow! Wish I could've seen that tour!
Uh oh…still, that must have been 🔥
Ann and Nancy rule. They made a sound that was unbelievable! Not knowing the story behind barracuda I still love it! I first heard Heart by this song. I was hooked from then on. Ann’s voice touches my soul. Together Heart touches my soul
The entertainment press hasn't improved much, huh?
These women are amazing! I saw them in concert years ago. They are really great singers. I wasn’t a fan until decades later after they came out. If I was a rocker I’d be like them!! So happy you got a chance to do this interview!! I always liked the song Magic Man and Never. The 90’s were great and that’s when I truly discovered Heart for my own!
She's one of my favorites.
Barbara Jansen - I'm with you 100%!
Amazing Interview-Ann Wilson is so cool - a legend in music- One of the greatest Female singers of the entire Rock Era! Barracuda was a staple on Rock Radio in the mid 70's- it brought Heart into my radar of music. The power and intensity of that track really took the genre with a Female lead singer and shook the foundations. SO cool you were able to get these band members together to share their story with us- Awesome! Thank you so much
No one like the Wilson sisters. They are such geniuses.
Nancy is the one to nail them a number one hit with These Dreams. She was very sick with a cold or flu and thought she sounded bad and wanted to go home but the producer begged her to keep singing and she nailed it.
I love this song! We have a conference room at my company that's named "Barracuda" after the fish, and someone put up a picture of Ann & Nancy rocking out on the window. I use this song as the alarm for me to take my pills. Okay, to be honest, I love all their music, and Ann's live version of "Mistral Wind" blows me away every time.
Very cool. Thanks Bruce. Great story
Ha! I’d love to see that.
I didn't discover their 70s material until after hearing their hits “These Dreams” and “What About Love.” Once I heard their 70s songs I was hooked on that material over their 80s material. Their 70s stuff just grabs me more.
I don't blame Ann for being angry. She and Nancy deserved to be pissed. That was a sleazy ad campaign. Great interview.
Such amazing talents in Heart. One can only wonder how countless many girls have been inspired to greatness. My first crushes growing up were Joan Jett, and Ann Wilson. I'm still a sucker for women that rock. Thank you Ann for all your hard work... We treasure the memories we have when we hear your music... That's priceless.
Maybe PoR will do an episode about Suzi Quattro. She is really the first lady of rock.
Ann and Nancy were the first celebs I met in 1980 as they were promoting Bebe Le Strange. The hometown girls were already local faves here in Seattle and got to hear pretty much everything before the general public. Being a lifelong fan, yes there were "the eras" (Mushroom, Epic, Capitol) "Dreamboat Annie" and "Magazine" were the introduction as you mentioned with "Crazy On You" "Magic Man" and "Heartless". "Little Queen", "Dog & Butterfly" and "Bebe LeStrange" (The Epic Years) with standouts, "Barracuda" "Kick It Out" "Straight On" and the hidden gems of "Love Alive" "Mistral Wind" and their tribute to Led Zeppelin "Rockin' Heaven Down." The Capitol years favorites are the comeback album in 1985 and "Brigade" with the smash "All I Wanna Do Is Make Love To You" which should've gone number one!!! Barracuda is just one of many stories from Heart, Thanks for doing this one Adam 🙂
All these songs are classics! Man, I love ❤.
Someone just recently posted a radio interview of Ann and Nancy before they started the 1987 bad animals tour and they were full of enthusiasm.... by the end of 1987 in December Howard leese said Ann was thinking about retirement in a Miami news article... this was because the reviews were rigged back in 1987 they would never give heart a good review never talk about how stupendous the concerts were that's why Ann felt negatively about Heart by the end of 1987... it was the rigged reviews
@@dampergoldenrod4156 Agreed, I remember all that back then. Brigade was a brilliant tour! The "Desire Tour" was barely mentioned and then they were dropped from Capitol after the 2 live albums. I think they were talking about starting a family and taking time off.
Dreamboat Annie was the first album I ever purchased for myself. ❤️
Yep All I wanna do-Should have been #1 ❤
Ann Wilson has been my hero since I was 12 and Barracuda came out, not just because she has one of the greatest rock voices ever, but because of the trials she has gone through as a person.
She is relatable on an epic scale to anyone (man or woman) who has ever been body shamed, sexually harassed, or felt they lived in someone's shadow. She has thrived through all of that and shown that a strong will can help you get through anything.
She is an AMAZING human being. A perfect role model.
I completely agree with this! Ann has been one of my Sheros for those same reasons. I've loved their music for years and years!
@@kfemme68 "Sheroes." I love that word! Imma borrow it.
Saw Heart in Eastern PA with a friend. He drew Ann a poster for her birthday and wanted her autograph. As the concert drew to a close, he went behind the stage and I didn't see him for a few days. After he helped the roadies she signed it! He showed it to me. Yes Jerry, I remember!
YES!! Godesses of Rock! What a screamin' band they were. Not a single musician was less than a master at their craft. Even though I've heard this song a MILLION times, I still turn it up and drop everything to join in the intensity of this masterpiece. Solidly in the top 10 rock songs of all time for me. Thank you for this interview, and keep 'em comin'.
"Barracuda" will never die. Neither will Annie's voice.
In my half century on this planet, never has the word "burn" been used so hauntingly. It stands the hair on the back of my neck every time I hear Barracuda.
Burn in hell!
Until Hamilton.
As a man (that’s 60 years old now) I have no idea what ANY MAN would think that it’s OK to talk to ANY WOMAN that way‼️🤬😡‼️her restraint not to flat out “Bitch Slap” that guy into tomorrow is immense! More power to her to take those powerful emotions and to put it to words is fantastic. I had never heard that story, it will forever change how I hear that song! I’ve always thought that Heart is a great band. I remember the first time hearing they were sisters, it all made perfect sense to me because of there voices.
What's really great about your channel is making me remember all these great artists, grabbing an adult beverage, and going back through my music library and listening again. Thank you so much for all the time and effort that you put into all of these videos, it is appreciated!
Love the POR Ann Wilson interviews. Get lost in those eyes as she tells her stories... meaning sincerity and straight shooting soul shaping that voice. Great stuff.
Totally.
I had always believed that I had to choose between Disco and Rock, until I realized how much The Bee Gees truly ROCK and I heard my own personal "Rock God" Mr. Warren Zevon do "Nighttime In the Switching Yard."
You asked the perfect question that should be asked of every musician in an interview, "Your double A-Side, what would be your double A-Side?" I watched the interview and I got to know the song better, but when you asked that, we got to know Ann better. Next time, let her expand on that!
Awesome band! Awesome interview! Awesome story! Awesome episode! "Barracuda " has always been one of my favorites! Great to hear the story behind it! Thanks for keeping the music alive Professor!
Thanks! Will keep doing so!
What a powerhouse!
Anne Wilson is easily the greatest female rock vocalist of *ALL*time.
Such an icon.
I grew up listening to all the music from the 60's and early 70's. It was the summer between 7th and 8th grade when "Barracuda " came out and on a 2 week family vacation from the Illinois/Wisconsin border to Corpus Christie Texas I made my parents turn up the radio every single time it came on. It is still my favorite to this day❤️
Big Heart fan! I can still remember seeing them on tv singing Dreamboat Annie in '76. As a music aficionado with a large collection of music covering 47 genres of music, I would say the WIlson sisters are on my top 3 list. My favourite 50 tracks include Crazy On You, Straight On and Mistral Wind. Heart has mastered the blues rock, folk, and folk rock genres!!! From time to time I listen to an all Heart song evening.
I love heart one of the best rock bands ever. My favorite song of there's is called Dog and Butterfly but i love all there song's.
It's a great song for sure.
That is a great one.
Dog and Butterfly is pure poetry. I still love it.
What a voice! She's amazing.
Incredible. No question about it.
She truly is a legend.
Ginger Baker said he should have gotten a credit for "Sunshine of your love" and I agree. His bolero drum beat makes a large part of the song.
I was 16 when Dream Boat Anne came out, listened to it over and over. That lez story never reached my ears, but the way it was, was the way it should be and is not anymore, the music spoke for itself.
Love the band Heart, Ann Wilson is my #1 female rock vocalist.
A few women rockers who preceded them come to mind based on first studio album:
the band Fanny, Grace Slick of Jefferson Airplane, Suzi Quatro and Janis Joplin.
For sure. Grace Slick! Janis!
I thought about Grace Slick and Janis Joplin as well when they were talking about that time period and who actually came before them.
Grace had one helluva voice.
The first time I heard Baracuda I looked at My friend Shane and said to Him : Oh this is going to change things for this band. I was right. They became famous. And they released hit after hit.
This jam from Heart always resonates with me. It just deepened my respect for these ladies when I learned the back story of its creation. They are iconic & Heart ALWAYS holds multiple spots on my many eclectic favorite lists.
Great one Prof!
Barracuda is one of those great iconic rock songs.
When I am driving down the highway & that song comes on, whatever car I am driving turns into a 1971 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda & I am flying down the road!

Straight On is my favorite rock song with a disco beat. I love their 70's stuff the most. Seattle just seems to put out the best bands!
We talked about that one. Good song.
I love Straight On.
I was pulled over for speeding 3 times, all 3 were in the early 80's, all three times this song was on. The third time the officer walked up to my car and heard it playing on the radio and just said "Yea that's a hard song to drive slow to, try to keep it down son" and left with no ticket.
It took me decades to have the stars align and finally see them in 2003 in HoB New Orleans. The wait was not disappointing! Anne’s voice was perfect and Nancy was a force of nature! What a phenomenal show!! Thanks for this great episode.
Heart was my first concert, for the Bebe le Strange tour. They were amazing then, and they are still one of my favorite bands. Amazingly talented. Love them!
Thanks for this one, too, Professor. Michael Derosier was one of three drummers that were drum heroes to me as a kid (along with Neil Peart and Jeff Porcaro,) Teenage me spent endless hours playing Barracuda, Heartless, Cook with Fire, Straight On, etc.
That’s a great trinity there.
For me it’s Jeff, Neil and Phil of Kansas.
Great drummer picks. Can't argue.

Barracuda helped kick open the door for women in rock, I remember when I heard this and Crazy on You and Magic man I knew they were going to be a force for years and Heart carried that torch. This song transcends generations, I hear the younger generation blasting it to this day. Wild story of how it originated because she was angry over a dumb perception backstage. I would if that clown knew he inspired this classic rocker. Great interviews professor, you got 3 of the musicians behind the music stories on this, awesome!
Thanks My Name. It was a cool piece to do.
I think the door was already open for women in Rock unless the ones in the 60s were space aliens. See Gretchen Wilson`s live cover with Nancy Wilson and Alice in Chains. She nails it.
SO MANY 80s female rockstars, from Joan Jett to Chrissie Hynde to even Pat Benatar and Annie Lennox, all owe their respects to Heart. Without the Wilson sisters, we wouldn’t have had as fun of a decade as we did in the 80s. This song is my go-to when I want to tell someone to stop it!
It certainly did help kick the door open, but let's not forget what Grace Slick and Janis Joplin had done before them. Still surprised to this day that Grace and the Airplane recorded the lyrics "up against the wall mo...... f...ers" in the 60s. All those made it possible for the Runaways, Blondie, The Pretenders, and others who opened it up wide for all the female acts of the 80s and beyond do do whatever they wanted.
@@baneverything5580 fair enough but I believe those girl groups of the 60s weren't in control of their careers or music like the Wilsons were, they were the heads of a rock band which I can't find another example, perhaps Jopin but not really
Been a "Heart" fan ever since i first heard them on the radio. Seen them in concert during the '80's in Chattanooga. To hear Ann's voice live was mesmerizing.
She kills it live!
So WoW! Heart is one of my favorite bands ever and Ann Wilson to me is the absolute best female rock singer of all time! Nancy is just as important to the band! I am a 65 yr old male musician (trumpet player) and I still often play Heart's songs. In 1975 I was driving in Nashville Tennessee where I was working as a sessions musician at 18 yrs old and on my car radio I heard Heart for the first time playing Dreamboat Annie and I liked them so much I started following the band. Magic Man was the next song I heard and from that pooint on I have been a fan of Heart. To me Heart is right up there with the best of the best. I was and am a huge Chicago and Zeppelin fan and I listen to Heart's songs just as much. To me Heart was so exciting because they were great and the first super popular female rock band. So rock on Heart! Your music will live on!
My favorite rock song of the 70s! Thank you for a great look at how two sisters broke all the rules and triumphed! Thanks also for giving Michael a chance to talk about how a drummer can indeed make a song a hit. Phil Collins would break the ceiling later, but that they gave credit to Michael back then was fantastic!
I absolutely love Heart. They are on my everyday rotation and I rarely ask Spotify to skip theirs song, irregardless of the mood I’m in.
However the shocker for me was that one of my favourite songs was a Joni Mitchell cover. I love both, but This Flight Tonight is in my top twenty all time favourite songs. It’s amazing how the arrangement of a song can make all the difference.
I could play these side by side, I probably have, and not piece that together.. it’s been a humbling week when it comes to being a music guy. I think this is twice this week that I’ve been surprised by a few of The Professors music facts. Of songs and artist I love even. Humbling indeed. Lol
Isn't it strange?
This Flight Tonight is such an underrated song.
It’s mind boggling to think of all the great Rock songs that we would’ve never had if the writer hadn’t felt slighted by someone else.
I truly believe, that's why Heart is so great, because of the fact of the sisters, to go that far in history with most of the music is still pretty much the same, love them, great bunch of songs that will be forever in our 💕
Thank you so much for this! Since jr. high, whenever I've heard someone gush over Bonham's drumming I've told them to go listen to Mike Derosier, starting with Barracuda. I'm so glad to see him here getting some much, much, MUCH deserved limelight for his sickeningly perfect contribution of groove and unshakable foundation.
This is one of those, I grew up with. Saw them 4 times live, and I remember the "rumor" about Barracuda. I was mad as hell when I heard about it- and couldn't believe someone's mind could even go there. For me? It made that song FAR more powerful- and it was an insanely awesome way to slap the hell outta that imbecile.
Me? I think it made Heart far stronger, and their energy increased even more... which was really kinda hard to believe, as they were already high octane.
My best memory, was Heart blasting in my '69 soft top Pontiac Firebird, heading down to Santa Cruz, CA, and a full day at the beach. Just... total freedom.
It's a disturbing business for sure.
@@ProfessorofRock Yes, it can be that. You know.. for a slightly different perspective? Maybe you should do a segment on my cousin, Michael Lloyd, a man who influenced my own love for music.
Once teamed with Mike Curb & the Mike Curb Congregation, and both great producers in their own rights- They were on the opposite side of that other label. Good men, who cared about their artists.
"Burning Bridges" in the 1971 movie "Kelly's Heros"? Did pretty well. And Michael worked with many big artists.
Just to show people there ARE good men out there, who did care about the music.
I don't know, maybe being an actual artist yourself? Helped them keep what was important, first priority.
Up to you. Great video today.
IKR? How nasty is that?!
My MOST FAVORITE Heart song HAS to be “Dog and Butterfly”. AWESOME guitar and vocals!
Absolutely agree! I often bring up Barracuda vs Dog and Butterfly as to just how different a group's music may at first sound, but still be completely melodic and tell a good story. I especially love the poetry of dog knowing 'she had to try' even when failing, but falling down 'on the warm soft ground' as opposed to cold/hard.
In my humble opinion I feel that Nancy is one of THE best guitarists 🎸 in rock -- if not the best EVER. She's got a hell of a lot really gr8t 🎸 riffs in their hits. She's also an excellent stage performer.
I first saw Heart at Cal Jam 2 in 1978 and have been to many concerts with the last in 2019. There is nothing like hearing Ann singing Stairway to Heaven live. It was an experience to hear her voice and see Jason playing like his dad...chills and tears.
Back in the day, I bought 'Little Queen' LP for the hit singles. The under-rated "Dream of the Archer" became my favorite; it still resonates long after the hits lost their luster.
love that song so much! it's such an amazing song. little queen is such a classic lp. dream of the archer gives me all the feels, as they say these days.
Such a cool song.
Borrowing from" or being"influenced by" other musicians is a basic tenet of "Folk Music." Having other people learn and play your songs, was actually critical in a time where most musicians did not know how to document their music with paper and pencil. From the time of the King's Court's musicians to the Bluesman of Mississippi, our modern Jazz and Pop music would not exist if musicians were not inspired by their predecessors. People who say "Led Zeppelin " & "The Rolling Stones" stole the bluesman's music do not understand this.
Magic Man was the song of my first hormone hit in Grade 7. Didn’t understand the song, my body, or rock. But man, it was sooooo sensual.
Baracuda is an amazing song. I love the riff. I've been listening to it since it came out, when I was just a kid. It is always welcome when it plays on the radio, or on one of my playlists.
Same here!
I love Heart! I grew up with them as my mom played their albums constantly. There are so many songs by them that I absolutely love but I must say that my favorite is "There's the Girl", followed by "Never" and "Straight On", and of course the classic "These Dreams". There's no band that sounds like them. Now or back then.
So many great songs from them to choose.
When You talk about Heart, you're talking about the very best. Hearing the back story about Barracuda, clears the "air of confusion" that seemed to be present in that tune.
If it had been something like that from some pundit, toward my brother and me, there would have been more than an ass kicking song, there would have been an ass kicking. Credit to Ann for not loosing on that guy.
Another great interview Adam, just great, ;-)
I would have gone to jail if it were me.
I grew up idolizing Heart and Ann in particular for her wonderful lyrics and voice.
I can still sing like her!!
Every time I do, I give it my all to honor an absolute rock legend.
you can't sing like her. No one can.
Cool info in this video Professor! Whenever I hear this song I think of the Mopar muscle car the Barracuda (the Cuda)
Really? Very cool.
@@ProfessorofRock check out the Plymouth Cuda on UA-cam Professor! An awesome car !
@@ProfessorofRock if Dodge ever decides to release a new Barracuda, I won’t be surprised if they’ll use Heart’s song to promote it in commercials (with Heart’s permission)
I always think of horses and Napoleon because of that riff. 🎸
Ann still has it. Beauty, soul and fire! What an amazing woman.
As a kid who grew up in the '80s, I will attest to the fact that this rumor was rampant. Just like the Richard Gere rumor, the Tod Stewart rumor, and others. It's crazy how prevalent these things became without the help of the internet.
I have had the pleasure of seeing Heart twice. Ann is such an amazing vocalist - she can croon a ballad or belt out a rock anthem. And she looks amazing in your interview.. thanks so much for giving us the backstory on this landmark song!
Ironic that she mentions Fleetwood Mac the day after we lose Christine McVie.
No kidding.
It’s so sad. 😢
