Very wise! People put far too much importance on 'showering. There are many ways to keep clean and hygienic; also helps limit the water use. Another fun video, thanks Brenna!

I had a bathtub in my van, thinking I'd need it for eczema, and only used it a few times, to end up using a flannel and hotwater in a pie-enamelled pan. Heat water & flannel on induction stove, to sterilise it each day, is my choice now. Wash each morning using charcoal soap to detox skin. I fell better than any shower or bath. I've renovated my van and removed the bath-tub.

Hi, is charcoal soap the same as black soap?
I constantly talk about black soap, we didn't have issues with our skin when we use it.
It was only when I had my first I bought a hair dryer and different shampoos that I got cirisous 🙈🙈
I learnt 20years ago what is in all those shampoos / body wash, etc. I stay clear of all those chemicals 🙈🙈
      👍😉🇨🇮☘️Eire

@@Marie-yx5ie Yes most black soaps are activated charcoal soap. My sister used to make it, so I'm using her products that I purchased a box of, but she's no longer making. Try to get homemade, compared to commercial.

@@Marie-yx5ie The Charcoal soap I use has a grit in it. I rub the soap on the hot flannel, and then rinse in the heated water. Then wipe down body with the wet soapy watered flannel. The coal bits, help to massage the skin, exfoliate, even though they are fine bits, less than say a grain of salt. You'll feel very clean after that. I also moisturise after the wash down daily.

My record without a shower is 12 weeks. Sponge baths, the ocean and very short hair. 😊

I agree, I too have done 2 weeks without a shower and just bird bathing or baby wipes, I believe since plumbing was invented in houses people are over cleaning themselves, my parent's only had a bath once a week in the same bath water for everybody, I don't know why people think they need a shower daily, a face washer works wonders. Thanks for sharing.

Good morning Brenna from Victoria. I totally agree with you. All my life I showered and washed my hair everyday. When I got my van of course things changed. I have tried using baby wipes etc but didn't really feel clean after using them. I found sponge bathing is just as good as a shower and since not washing my hair everyday, it seems to look a lot better.

This series is so helpful - thank you!
There are so many vanlife channels/videos highlighting all the fun and beautiful scenery - which are great. But simple practical information like this is difficult to find.

I have a toilet/shower room in my campervan but I use a bowl of hot water and flannel to do the washing part then quickly rinse off with shower hose. It’s nice to have a hot shower before hopping into bed on a cold night. 😊

I've been spending too much time in haematology getting treated for cancer. Occasionally when on a drip my nurse throws a heated blanket over me. Magic! I mean to buy an electric throw for home.

Love the outdoor shower unit but not sure how well it would do here in the UK. Spring to Summer would be fine but the rest of the year 🥶

Awesome! thanks for this video. I'm planning for sponge baths as well, even though I have a shower in my MH. I will use it when I need / want to. If I'm at a c/park then I'll use theirs. Thinking about emptying that grey water tank (145 ltrs) and filling the fresh water tank (also 145 ltrs) rofl!

145kg of water, a lot of extra fuel to carry that around...lol...I carry less than 40L a mix of tap water (15L for washing) and drinking water (20L), it will last approximately 10 days, I find there's always a water supply nearby to top up anytime.

Well, that’s no different to the 50s and 60s. We used to have one bath a week and the rest of the time we strip washed at the sink. As you said, bathing or showering every day is far too much anyway and especially when getting older.

    • @Kirbygal55

I was brought up in a large family and all 5 of us took turns to bath with one other and it was once a week. Other times we would all sit on the side of the bath and soak our feet if our feet were grubby which of course was a lot. 😀

Hi Brenna, I have been binge watching you for the last week. I could write an A4 page about what I've learned from you. I have a campervan but it is in need of some repairs which is slowly happening. I adore Abby. I have a Portuguese Water Dog who turns 14 in about 10 days. I'm 73 and can't give up on my dream of some travelling in my campervan. I live in Perth. Do you feel vulnerable in the outside shower? ie naked! Thanks for all you down to earth videos, tips and tricks. Cheers

This reminds me of my grand-parent's country house when there still wasn't a shower. I loved the sponge bath or bucket shower, for some reason it made me feel cleaner than a shower! ❤ Now, I live in an apartment, but I'm older and have been taking showers less often. I also bought a solar shower to use less water... The part about feeling the air while showering reminded me of a shower I took in Patagonia, it was pretty chilly, haha! ❤

I so agree about showering every day! Unless a person is working in a really messy job, or else they do heavy workout every day and sweat an awful lot (and even then, sweat washes off with a bird bath), then showing daily really is unnecessary.
Imagine how much water would be saved if more people had bird baths every day instead of showering!
Same goes for hair washing. Unless there’s some kind of issue that makes your hair super oily, leaving it for longer and longer between washes will eventually result in your hair retaining its natural (non-excessive) oils. Washing your hair daily causes the scalp to produce excessive oils to replenish what was stripped out.

Yep I am an older woman & defiantly don’t need to shower every day, I clean myself well after toileting, my underarms do not produce unpleasant BO smells that require daily showers. I regularly go a number of days without showering, i have solar hot water so during the colder months i don’t need to use the electric boost for hot water very often, particularly if its sunny. This keeps my electricity vill low. It’s warmer not to disrobe during winter anyway. Your shower set up on your van sounds great.

So simple no pump "no non sence" for the bucket, a long becker I'll use. I never thought of that for camping. I have a toilet tent.
I am 66 and that's how we had to wash in my day when I was young, now granted when I babysat for my sister's which was a lot, I would use their bath. But yes my generation definitely did that.
I am going camping next weekend so thank you for that.. I love the fact that you can see the sky though 🤔🤔
