    Thank you, Brad! My Ariens 824 auger suddenly and completely stopped while blowing and I feared the worst. Your video gave me the confidence to look at the belts and determine that the auger belt was loose but not the real problem. Upon closer inspection of the blades, I found a small stone jammed in the bottom. After clearing the stone, I tightened the auger belt and now waiting for new snow to test it out! Thanks again!

    I haven't used my snowblower in 2 years because I thought I must've had a bad gearbox. I feel so stupid. I’m not very mechanically inclined typically, and my snowblower hasn’t been blowing snow very well at all this year. I assumed it was because the snow was wet, but remembered it being so much more powerful in the past. I guess it gradually loosened or stretched and it wasn’t turning the impeller or the auger as fast the minute I got into any snow. Even a couple inches was stopping me from being able to throw the snow and the impeller would clog in the shoot. I thought perhaps the belt was worn out once I figured out that could be the problem, but then it occurred to me that there might be a tensioner so I took the cover off and made this adjustment. I wish I would’ve found this video weeks ago. It would’ve saved me a lot of work over the last few storms! I didn’t even know to look for the adjustment under the cover. Great explanation. Much better than the Ariens video.

      @@pbarbour7 replacing belts will very depending on how much use the machine gets and in what type of snow it is throwing . Just make sure you keep proper tension and adjustments and check them once a year. Use silicone spray in and around the intake and discharge chute to help keep snow moving in and out of the machine quickly and don’t over do it by thrower too much snow at once. If you do all of these steps your belts should live a long life.

      I also have the 624e and it has the exact same problem. When it first hits snow it blows fine, but even a moderate load causes an immediate collapse of the outflow from the chute. Often, even moving forward at the slowest speed is too much for the auger/impeller to handle. I have to move forward a few inches, let the blower clear, move forward a few inches, etc. And wet snow or even a thin layer of slush under a dry snow? Forget about it. It's incredibly frustrating. Meanwhile, my neighbor also has an Ariens of similar size and he can blow through a foot of snow like it's nothing. I looked at my belts a couple days ago, but didn't find anything obvious. Maybe I can use this video to help.

    I have an Ariens 624e. I believe it's about fourteen years old, but it doesn't get heavy use here. My blower is pretty abysmal at this point because the auger/impeller can barely handle any load. The outflow quickly collapses. I opened it up a couple days ago and checked the belts, but I didn't really know what to look for so I did not adjust anything. There seems to be tension when squeezing the auger control handle, but one thing I notice is that there is a very loud click noise (coming from the idler/pulley) when I squeeze the auger control handle all the way. The idler pulley does not stop moving inward until the handle is all the way down. I think I'm going to have to watch this video a few more times and see if there is an adjustment I can make to my tension/pulley.

    • @DanCerveny
      @DanCerveny 2 роки тому

      Yesterday, in anticipation of our first significant snow of the season, I made a simple 1/4" inward adjustment to the idler pulley, which tightened the auger belt nicely. This evening I used it to blow two driveways and it was amazing. It ate through the snow drifts like it was nothing and it shot the snow out of the chute with power and without any hiccup. It didn't work this well when it was brand new fourteen years ago. Thanks for posting this video. It really helped.

    Thanks for this amazing video! My compact 24 was barely throwing out snow. I followed your instruction and now WOW! This machine is a killer (Im from Quebec City so we got between 4 and 5 meters of snow per year). I have a question for you = Is it harmful for the engine to move the pulley too further and add "too much pressure" on the belt?

    • @JohnsonsSmallEngines
      @JohnsonsSmallEngines  Рік тому +1

      If your talking about the auger belt pulley pressing to hard on the belt when it’s engaged? The tension on the auger belt is only spring tensioned and you should not be able to over adjust it and if you do, the augers will most likely not stop moving. In that case you would need to unadjusted the tension.

    Thanks, great video! Question, if you don't mind. I have an old Ariens, when the clutch is disengaged, the auger spins. The pulley for the big belt is adjusted all the way "loose". Also, the linkage adjustment is different than the one in your video, but its "loose" as well. I think its an aftermarket belt, I bought the blower used. When the clutch is disengaged, there is quite a bit of play in the belt (couple of inches?) But when I start the blower, the auger spins right away, and won't stop. I checked and it has a relatively new brake pad as well. Thanks,

    • @JohnsonsSmallEngines
      @JohnsonsSmallEngines  2 роки тому +1

      If you meant the “belt” started smoking. Make sure your not taking in to much snow. I would suggest spraying silicone in and around the augers and exhaust chute before blowing snow. This must be performed on the machine before you use it so the barrel is dry. It will help the snow come out better and not get stuck.(2) make sure your belt is properly adjusted. (3) if your using a aftermarket belt? They seem to stretch quickly. Meaning belt adjustment will be needed more.

      @@JohnsonsSmallEngines thank you for the fast reply! I think I have the adjustment too right. I moved the adjustment pully over and left 1/4” but I think the cable itself may be too tight. I haven’t tried it with snow yet since it hasn’t snowed

    My clutch attachment won’t stay engaged (problem for me and arthritic hands) when the drive clutch is engaged. Will this solve that problem or is there something else I should try?

    • @JohnsonsSmallEngines
      @JohnsonsSmallEngines  Рік тому

      Not to sure of the question. Clutch Attachment? If you mean the front augers stopped turning? or will not stay turning, If your have arthritis and you cannot hold the handle down? That isn't the machines fault. If the augers are not staying on when the handle in down? Yes it could be this adjustment OR it could be a sheared auger pins or pins OR you can have a auger transmission issue or if the snow is very wet, that can also hurt the operation along with the adjustment. Here are a few videos that also may help. "My Snow Thrower Stopped Throwing Snow?" ua-cam.com/video/h7MWJclhELk/v-deo.html. also "Snow Thrower Clogged" ua-cam.com/video/7MzySt6OM4o/v-deo.html.

      Thank you. I did a bad job of explaining. Once the auger and drive are engaged, The auger used to lock/stay engaged without being held down. The auger would stop if the drive clutch was released. Auger works fine.
      I agree with the people who said it was a nicely done video even for a DIYer.

      Watch this video at the 8:03 minute mark. It will show you that if you hold both handles down until you let off of the drive handle the auger handle will stay down. This is so you can use your other hand to move the other levers while using the machine. ua-cam.com/video/E8WqjKfEUfE/v-deo.html

      Check to make sure the large pulley the belt drives is tight and doesn’t wobble. Check to make sure all belt guides are in good condition and properly adjusted. I have also come across belt guides that have broken off. Make sure you have the correct size belt. Without seeing it it will be very hard to pin point the issue.

    Here is my prob brotha. I have powermax toro 828. When the Auger belt handle is not pressed down my Auger still moves slightly. I can grab it a and stop it but the back of the belt is getting ground a bit by rubbing against the belt guide. Again this is gappening when I am not pressing down on the auger handle. When I press down Auger works great. Any advice?

    • @JohnsonsSmallEngines
      @JohnsonsSmallEngines  3 роки тому

      Belt adjustment is too tight? Guides are not adjusted properly, if a new belt was installed it may not be the correct belt size, Honestly without seeing it it’s too hard to give you advice but you can check the belt adjustment and the belt guides. Checked manual for correct belt tension.

      @@JohnsonsSmallEngines thank you! Yeah, I am suspect of this new belt. I basically rebuilt the whole machine. everything was messed up on the unit and someone had abused it pretty bad. Funny thing is this is the one prob it did not have before I took it apart. Manual is calling for a .100" gap between brake arm and this welded washer nut assembly that fine adjusts it. I am going to set that next and see how she does. So close to having this thing humming!! Appreciate your vids bud. Your a great help!

    If you tighten the adjuster near the handle, would that help with the speed of the auger rotating? My auger is rotating slowly but the impeller is moving fast

    • @JohnsonsSmallEngines
      @JohnsonsSmallEngines  3 роки тому

      It will not help the speed of the augers. The rear impeller does rotated very fast compared to the front augers. If the snow thrower is working well the all is good. Check to make sure your shear pins are ok.

    • @JohnsonsSmallEngines
      @JohnsonsSmallEngines  3 роки тому

      @@billvarela3558 you may have run out of adjustment and the belt has stretched to the point that is loose even at full adjustment. You may need a new belt. Worse case scenario you may have a bad gear drive in front where the augers are but without seeing the machine I cannot confirm that. I would start with getting a new auger belt.

      Is your belt tight when the handle is down? If it is you have other issues to look into. If the belt is loose it most likely is stretched and will need to be replaced
