  • In this video I will explain how you can install Arch Linux with Hyprland and Qtile with the new dotfiles 2.7.1. I will explain all required steps to get a running system with the window managers on your computer or QEMU based virtual machine.
    I will choose the minimal profile for Arch Linux as an easy and fast to install foundation. That's very easy with the archinstall script, shipped with the Arch Linux ISO.
    You can download the latest ISO of Arch Linux here:
    archlinux.org/download/
    The install script of the dotfiles will install then all required packages for Hyprland and Qtile on Arch Linux.
    The installation will take around 25 minutes depending on your download speed and CPU performance.
    You can find all steps from the video also here:
    gitlab.com/stephan-raabe/dotf...
    The documentation of Hyprland and Qtile:
    wiki.hyprland.org/
    docs.qtile.org/en/stable/
    You can find the dotfiles 2.7.1 on my GitLab repository:
    gitlab.com/stephan-raabe/dotf...
    After a successful installation you will get Hyprland with these applications:
    Terminal: alacritty
    Editor: nvim
    Prompt: starship
    Icons: Font Awesome
    Launch Menus: Rofi
    Colorscheme: pywal

    When you describe your dotfiles and where to find them, I miss the "you can download them, use them, modify them, fork them, do with them whatever you want!" part from your earlier videos. It was funny, inspiring and friendly. :)

    Greetings Stephan and happy new year, I love your work and the beautiful configurations of hyprland and qtile, but for my daily life I like using hyprland more, everything is incredibly easy with your automated scripts leaving you with an incredible work environment and a very Satisfactory experience in arch, which has been my distribution for years and I am very happy with it.
    Everything works very well in your configurations, I would only ask you for a small suggestion that I missed, it is with the mouse to change the size of an active window and I did not find or I do not know if it is included in the configuration, but in other configurations with hyprland yes I found it and although it is not a manager to use the mouse, the truth is that it is comfortable to reduce or enlarge the window with the mouse, just that and it is not a criticism in any way of your great work, it would just be great! ! I provided it in other configurations and it is very comfortable to click the mouse with the pointer and change the size of the window, thank you very much in advance and I am very grateful for your videos and channel and above all for your great work!!!

How different is this in term of RAM consumption in comparison with a real machine? What are the variables and how much can affect the numbers? Hi. I have no metrics available. My assumption is that Qtile is less resource hungry than Hyprland. But also Hyprland doesn't need a super powerful system. Use it also on an old laptop without any issues.

    I've tried reaching through a couple times and believe i did everything correct but ran into issue on login, Session is a gray bar with no option despite going with hyprland. Selected Hyprland in the install. Been trying to go through the wikis and read-me's as well but seem to be missing the solution.
    i've seen ctrl alt f4 mentioned to bring up input but is there a way to diagnose from there?

    Interesting video. Good guide. The only thing is a dead end situation when the user during installation chooses a layout other than en, for example ru, then when entering the graphical environment can not enter commands in the terminal and do anything at all from the keyboard. To avoid this problem it is necessary to leave the layout en and then manually specify kb_layout = us,ru and kb_options= for switching combination.
    Also, when starting in a virtual machine and changing the screen resolution in hyperland, a blank screen is loaded and only the terminal emulator starts. I haven't figured out how to fix it yet. How to add a second layout to Qtile and organize switching of layouts?

    I got this running in VMware and it looks great. I do have a major issue though. When I’m in the Hyprland desktop environment, keybinds or menu items that pertain to the scripts in ~/dotfiles/.settings/ don’t work for me. That means trying to bring up e terminal with SUPER + ENTER doesn’t work neither does SUPER + B for browser. And when i try to click the menu items on the left side to bring up a terminal or settings, that will crash my Hyprland session and i’ll be taken back to sddm login. I know keybinds work because I can swap environments fine, but they won’t work for running those scripts. I’ve even tried changing them but I still see the same behaviour and I can’t launch a terminal nor can I click on the menu items to change settings or launch terminal without Hyprland crashing. I can run the settings script fine from tty, but not when I’m in Hyprlands. I've even tried to use the file manager to navigate to one of the scripts and right -click open with kitty/alactritty (tried both, neither work), if i try open with Vim i get the error message, "unable to find terminal required for application." • @donaldwilliams6821
      @donaldwilliams6821 6 місяців тому

      Yes, basically waybar needs a config files, a CSS style file and a JSON modules file for any widgets you want on the bar. You have to work within his configuration. He has theme dir, a JSON modules dir and a control file to select the various configurations. I have a vm with his hyprdots setup. It's a very cool and interesting configuration. There are some amazing ones out there.

      Tiling Window Managers don't really work like that. Instead you use keyboard shortcuts to close, move to another workspace or go full screen for example. Once you get used to them you may find like I did those are not needed and it's faster to use the short cuts. You don't have to move the mouse all around the screen to do things.

      GUIs are such a subjective thing. Hyprland is still very much a work in progress effort. I can only share my perspective. In trying hyprland I got my first real exposure to tiling WM vs. DE. For me it was a trans-formative experience. I am able to work more efficiently compared to a traditional DE. Also, it is so customizable and the config files are simpler. I don't need to know how to code is C for DWM, or need great levels of Python, or JSON for some other GUIs. If you know CSS you can create some amazing results. I also like that the config files are easily portable. For example, if I want to put Stephans setup on a VM or PC, I install it, I have scripts to install all the packages and applications I want and the config files It's not as deep level as say NIXOS but it's super easy compared to other distros Also you can layer this on another distro as well. I also think it's a very attractive interface. I like that you can create rules for specific applications to change how they behave. I.e. starting BTOP is a smaller dedicated window. There are also other projects like a plug-in manager and pyprland to further extend it's features. but you decide whether to use them or not.

      @@donaldwilliams6821 I mean you can have tiling windows also with Gnome, just drag the windows on the left or right corner and gnome extensions are much more powerful, so I do not understand the effort toward tiling only window managers

    • @donaldwilliams6821
      @donaldwilliams6821 6 місяців тому

      @@luigitech3169 It's a personal workflow choice. But you highlighted the difference. In order to tile in GNOME or Windows you have to grab the mouse,, select the window in the right spot, move it to a location, select your tiling option and release. With tiling WM as you open them the will tile based on WM. Some like DVM, or XMONAD have multiple predifinted tiling modes you can activate on the fly. I do a lot with scripts. So this tiling greatly helps me out. I don't think anyone is saying tiling is the best and only option. But it is what works best for many people. At work I also have to use a Windoze 11 PC. I see the difference immediately. If you like GNOME then by all means use GNOME. Also some tiling WMs are extremely programable. I.e. where applications open and how they behave. Which isn't something I've seen with GNOME or KDE, etc.. Try it, give it a chance you might like it. If not, that's OK too. Any Linux GUI is better than Windows or MacOS. Regards

      @@luigitech3169 I seem to be losing my replies. You highlighted the difference.
