Top 15 Deer Hunting Tools For Serious Hunters

- In no order of importance, this is a collection of deer hunting tools that I take to the woods or use in the woods, nearly every time I deer hunt. Whether you are a beginning deer hunter or are a grizzled old veteran of several decades, these are tools that you shouldn't deer hunt without. However not only should you not enter the deer season without these tools, there is a detailed breakdown of how each of these tools can help you deer hunt at a higher level. Are you learning how to deer hunt for the first time! Then you need to make sure that you take notes. Are you beginning your 40th deer season? Then I respectfully bask that you consider if you are using these tools and how you use them. These deer hunting tools should always be in your Fall tool bucket - but make sure that you stay tuned for #14 and #15! Those two deer hunting tools kind of made the top list, but for different reasons...

I’m a still hunter but first thing I do when I sit for a break is get out the range finder and start ranging the area. Great tip. We are getting closer and closer to deer season!
It only took one bad experience for me when I found out the hardway. My nice wet rubber boots make very loud squeaky sounds on the base of my Summit Goliath tree stand.
My fix was grip tape applied to to the base of the climber . That eliminated the squeak. Love your channel good Hunting.

Thanks so much for your videos, even though I’ll probably miss this years deer season I have learned so much from your videos. I’ve actually been able to start applying it to this herd of deer I would see on the way to work. I looked at a map and sure enough they were coming back from agriland to go bed down in the forest and doing the reverse in the evening.
Your videos are always so helpful for the guys still new to the game. Even topics that don’t directly apply to where i am and how i hunt i can take something away. Thanks!
My advice is keeping reading/watching from different sources until you start hearing enough repetition and overlap that it becomes more difficult to find new material. For example, if you want to learn how to tune your own bow, then keep seeking info until it gets boring and you're like "this topic again? why do people keep treading the same ground?"

Great tips Jeff! So many hunters do steps a-y hunting and forget to do Z. Great tips for beginners and good reminders for seasoned hunters.
You been a huge help. I’ve finally decided to hunt the wind strictly and stay out of my stand sights and it’s paying off a lot. I’ve seen and encountered deer the three times I been in the woods. I saw more deer Thursday than I did all last season. I learned to wait for the calm, in between fronts. Wether it’s a hot day down here in the south or not, doesn’t matter. They still move, regardless. Its just the calm in between and hunting the right stand, according to the wind.
I’m going back in on a new spot Tuesday. Be my second time there, and hopefully I’ll be in the right position this time to make a good shot, or at least observe more deer.

Some of my best days in the blind are bad weather. I hunt on the edge of a pine to oak cut and my best mornings are foggy and light drizzle. This is typically on the edge of the moon phase as well. Little and big bucks run hard on the two tracker we made between the pines and oak cut.

I am new to this archery hunting and using cameras and what not. I just started last year and had a good start. We just bought 19 acres in the woods and I have been watching your videos to learn about the food and bedding. 19 acres isnt much to work with but there are very few houses around me and its a mile or so until you hit crop fields...hopefully I can work on what I got and get the deer in and keep them close by. I had a bunch of deer earlier this year but as we get closer to the start of the season they have dwindled down a bit and not getting as many bucks...most my big buck pictures are night time but a few daytime...thanks for the great informational videos...

I used my cousins Summit Goliath a year ago. My opinion they’re the quietest comfortable stand for a climbing stand. I like the summits now. Easy to climb with to.

Would love for Family Traditions to market a smaller, lighter weight hanging stand (11 to 13 lbs). Basically something that competes with the Lone Wolf Assault 2. Run and gun hunters on public land would buy a bunch. Guys that walk in long distances on public land are obsessed with shaving pounds everywhere they can. It's possible to make a stand in this weight range that is also very strong (just might have to ditch the chains and ratchet straps, which understandably is part of their system and contributes to the FT stands being crazy overbuilt).
I can’t wait to get out there in one of my stands I know that much.

worst sound maker ever was the old safety lines banging off tree steps all the way up and down the tree.i got rid of those exposed buckles and Caribbeaners and bought the new HSS ropes.they have the rubber protector over the buckle.huge difference.same with safety harnesses I used to wrap all the buckles with black electrical tape.made a huge difference

My trail cameras are lower end and flash a red light when a picture is taken. I have it set for every 30 seconds. I never thought about this before this year but do you think that red light would spook deer? Only been using them about 2 years now and I agree it’s awesome knowing what is on your land even if you never seen them.
Also if you could do a video or point me in the direction of a video that shows how to properly use a grunt call and snort wheeze that would be awesome. I would be very interested in how you yourself call deer!

on another subject your absolutely right on optics.better off to have a junk gun and top quality scope than other way around.i learned the hard way.a cheap tasco scope cost me a big buck years ago fogging up on me at the moment of truth.vortex viper is the best scope I've found.no tapping on it to move cross hairs.just click, click, boom

Grunt tubes work good, most bucks I have harvested were with a grunt tube. My hoyt or my bps. You forgot a good gut knife.
You mention in this video that you have 6-8 trails coming together at your water hole. In other videos you mention parallel habitat features so 2 trails coming in. Are the other trails for this hole set up like hub & spoke or are they more natural?

I’ve found on several occasions when tripled layer with it the downwind deer smelled something but did not spook.

I don't use a range finder because I use bow only.
I typically mark the distance off by trees, shrubs, trails Etc.
I think your the only guy I want to hear anything from when it comes to Huntington
@20:00....too many guys think they aren't a man unless they shoot 70 lbs or more. So, they shoot this poundage that is too heavy for them and they shoot poorly and/or move too much on the draw. You should be able to stick the bow straight out and pull it straight back in a smooth, slow, controlled motion. For whitetails, if you have a modern bow and it is well tuned, then 60 lbs is plenty and should be getting you pass through 90% or more of the time and capable of penetrating one shoulder blade to get to the vitals.
I'm actually excited about how far bows have come. It means when I'm much older, I can pull 40 lbs and kill deer all day long. Heck a 50 lbs recurve is plenty, and that's probably only equivalent to a 35 lbs speed bow.
All so true...great comments! Although folks have a variety of poundages they can shoot comfortably, based on so many things. One person's 75 is another person's 45.
It all boils back to a very comfortable, smooth draw. I say shoot as much as you can that you are comfortable with because I've never heard anyone say when they shot a deer all the way thru with a pass thru, "man, I wish I had less poundage". More is better, but it has to be that smooth, comfortable draw.
Jeff great content again! Do you plan on any videos on your take on CWD? We are in the zone this year, the dnr are going to save the deer heard by annihilating it. Doesn't make a lot of sense.
Cwd alive in Ohio as well. The disease will run its course. I believe, ya hunt (in the summer) around ponds. Looking for those deer that can't get enough water. With good optics, can identify them very easily. And shoot and burn it. But it makes a lot of sense, and Dept of Natural Resources (various states) haven't learned how to seek the sick and remove. Instead kill them all, re introduce... 🤨

Do you think this season you could do a "live" hunt. Showing what day you choose to hunt and what factors led you to choosing that stand, followed by a live broadcast of the hunt. You dont see many live broadcast hunts, I know alot of that is due to location and battery life on equipment. I'm sure it would draw quite a few viewers if possible.
Over hunting my 70 acre property has never been a problem since I live 6 hours away. But as my kids get older and I have more vacation time I have more time to hunt. Could you do a video on how much hunting is too much and how often you can hunt a specific stand or property throughout the season?
He teaches you should hunt cold fronts. And use the wind. If the wind is in the wrong direction dont hunt. Is it's hot outside dont hunt.

Great video as always. I want to go get your book about hunting the weather, but I am in South Florida, where it is 80-104 most days from Opening day in August 8 through the end of bow season. Do you have any weather advice for those conditions?
Amaury...my AWW book would be perfect for your! Weather is all relative...meaning a drop from 90 to 78 is near or at the same value as a drop from 70 to 58. Also pay attention to morning lows too! At times the daytime highs are going to be the same, but a morning to morning 8 degree drop is meaningful for sure!

What would be your choice of a good topo map site? I saw where someone was using the caltopo site. When shooting bow from a high angle, how do you adjust for a good shot? Do you aim higher?
Peter Bergeris Yes definitely aim higher for an angled shot. Imagine where the arrow will come out and and what will go through the most diameter of the deer’s vitals.

With all due respect we don't all have thousands of $$ to spend on hunting gear however if you careful and quiet entering and with your movements you increase your chances exponentially, start off with affordable gear and you'll get it done.
You get what you lay for...and good gear lasts for decades. Some of us have made the sacrifices because hunting is our passion. Christmas and Bday gifts...making wise decisions in other areas if life so as not to waste money. All about priorities in life, let alone hunting...

sometimes we have access to private land but the landowner will not allow tree stands. How about suggestions for those of us who have to hunt from the ground?
Question for you, Jeff. I have good quality stands, but all metal gets squeaky/rusty/noisy, over time. What do you recommend to lubricate connections/noisy areas? I don't want to smell up the woods, but I want to do something to lubricate connection points.

i notice in all your videos that you mount your trailcams at head level (6ft) . Is there an advantage or specific reason you do this I typically put mine between a deer's chest and head as far as heigth
Extremely important Mike so they don't spook deer. 6' high, low glow or no glo, tree wider than the trail cam, profile hidden, etc. Just want to make sure deer never look at it...
3 of the biggest bucks came to my grunt call. If I hadn’t had it I wouldn’t got the last couple-3 bucks that are hanging on my wall.

Hi Robert I occasionally use one during the rut because I feel I can reach out a bit longer. I think wishful thinking tho, lol. I did kill a nice buck in 02 that came to one. That's the only one tho and I still carried one a few times last season.
I carry a doe can call in my pocket, if I'm going in the dark, and bump a deer I bleat inside my pocket and wait 5 minutes for things to settle down, I usually can continue in slowly and not spook the deer out of the area.

Oh for sure...bet would be extremely high quality! Jack's got a pretty good thing going with a great target market. Incredibly rock solid hang ons, tripods and ladder stands that simply don't break, bend, move or make noise. Meant for largely private land hunters who demand the best. I know he ever came out with on it would be too notch! Wonder what he feels about aluminum 🙂

Laid my bow on it’s side for just a second the other day in my lap. Literally 5 seconds later, I heard a leaf crunch behind me and had to sit there and watch deer walk by me without moving at all. Lol.

Always...and then wrap a strategy into it. Most of my "talking" videos during the season are shot from a treestand. When I shoot a buck it isn't under "Jeff's WI Buck" because then it dies after the initial posting and isn't searchable...kind of a wasted video.

Never... complete waste of money. I do not recommend that you use any scent at all other than peeing into the scrape during the summer to start the scrape. That means I will not earn several thousand dollars and free product from a scent company...but that's because I couldn't ethically recommend any. Check this out...

Something I have noticed quite a bit, is that the most seasoned and successful big buck hunters use the least amount of scent, lures or gels...unless paid to. I am not saying that to cut you down in any way...at all...just being honest. I hope that helps...but man, make sure to watch my mock scrape vids and how well they work...no scents and no product pimping.

Do you think deer/dogs "smell' disturbance to the environment on a trail as well as the scent?
Oh man D...HOURS later, have seen it firsthand many times. It is far, far more important to control your scent on the way in or out to a stand, than on the stand itself.
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 What I meant is disturbed soil, vegetation, etc. And then...they check closer and get your scent, weak as it may be.
@@dmouse522 definitely D! We cleared lanes for a stand today and I literally drag the brush up and down the hill 10-20 yards away. They see it and don't like it...make sure to clean up the shots! That's also why I clear shooting holes instead of shooting lanes.
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Me too! They are equipped for survival in ways I believe we don't comprehend. It's fun watching all the fawns in my yard learn the skills. Moved my bag targets a bit last night, fawns were crazy seeing that for the first time.
I'm sure a buck can tell the difference between doe pee and coyote pee but I agree that doe pee is not necessary or very useful.
