Proven Scent Elimination Routine for Serious Deer Hunters

  • These best scent elimination routine for serious deer hunters is a lot easier than you think. The core scent elimination for fooling an old bucks knees doesn't take place at the treestand. In fact, eliminating your scent while you are in your treestand is the least of your concerns. The vast majority of your scent elimination while deer hunting should take place on the way in and out of your hunt, while accessing your treestand. Your treestand should be positioned so deer do not travel downwind of your location. No matter what kind of scent contraption, gel, powder or spray that you use, your hunt will be over if a mature deer is downwind if your position. Scent control on the way in or out of your stand and a well positioned stand will eliminate 90% or more of your scent concerns. If you focus on NOT leaving a scent trail throughout the lands that you hunt, you will place yourself in a position to find consistent mature buck hunting success.

    Another big thing is dryer sheets, they will put a film of scent on your dryer, which then contaminates the next batch of clothes going into it, which may be your hunting clothes. There are no dryer sheets allowed to enter our home. Also, your vehicle needs to be as scent free as possible. I use an ozone device that plugs into the vehicle and it runs for something like an hour and then I let the ozone sit in the vehicle for the night. Then, right before I'm ready to use the truck I air it out to get the ozone out of it because it's not healthy to breathe in ozone.

      The cool thing is that none of that matters as you can't control your scent while on the stand. Clean legs, clean boots and spraying down so you don't leave scent on grass and weeds in the way to and from your stand are all you need. Don't have to worry about any of that. The best form of scent control is stand location. If they are downwind of you, you are done.
      When you look at hunters with the best track record for taking the biggest bucks from the area for decades...they do none of this nonsense. Unfortunately what you find is a correlation between how much a scent fanatic someone is, relating directly to how little success they have. The more scent control...the less successful hunters are ..at least when it comes to the level of being fanatical.

    I found hanging clothes over a fire that is reduced to smoke with local wood. I hunt on my property so I keep clothes in a tall locker outdoors next to a small shield to change in on those COLD mornings.

    I honestly think most people put too much work into scent eliminattion as opposed to hunting the right winds and knowing the patterns of your deer. Wash clothes without detergent, wear rubber boots and don’t have a air freshener in your truck. I leave hunting clothes in the truck in a tote just like him, natural smells help a lot, put some green leaves in your tote and wax merdle is your best friend!!

    My father and I purchased our first piece of hunting land this year after hunting public land since I was a kid. We purchased an 80 acre parcel a little west of Alpena. As soon as we started looking at properties, I started doing research and came across your channel. I can't even tell you how many of these "common mistakes" you talk about I would have made if it hadn't been for your channel. Everything from food plot location selection, seed choice, stand locations/setups, and especially stand access. I have tried my best to follow your advice, and with the season closing in on us, I'm more excited than ever to start seeing how our habitat improvements work for us. If you're in the Alpena area come November, the beers on me. Thanks again for all the great info you share with us.

    Another video of great info Jeff. I actually use the same method as Dylan, but I have found that when I change locations that I hunt, I also have to change the dirt and debris that I have in my rubbermaid. I actually spooked deer here in north east Indiana by using the cedar debris from southern Indiana. We don't have a lot of cedar here around my house and naturally the deer were a little cautious because of it. I hunt a cattle pasture down south and I intentionally walk through cow patties on way to stand cause they're used to it. I've also grabbed handfuls of bean pug and dirt and rubbed it all over my clothes at the truck before entering. The fresh worked up dirt can send a deer into curiosity mode but I haven't had it spook any yet. Great video bud.

Or make sure to cross through water to wathrough water to wash off the bottom of my shoes if possible. I drench my climber down in spray. Great video. I carry a pack of scent free hand-wipes in my pack. I use one once I get into the stand to wipe down the sweat off my head, neck, and face. I don't care how good of shape you're in, you will sweat walking in and climbing a tree. I think people underestimate how much scent comes off a sweaty head and face...and I find these wipes a great way to eliminate it.

    Good stuff. Can't stress enough about footwear. Years ago I watched a couple does hit the path I walked in on an hour prior and they froze, turned around and went right back the way they came. Another rule I use is to make sure my vehicle is fueled up the day before I hunt. I've seen guys standing at the pump in their hunting clothes gassing up on their way to the woods. Some are even wearing the boots they will wear into the woods. Not a good idea.

    Great video again. 2 questions for you
    1) If you're hunting in the morning, do you make sure you shower that morning or is it acceptable to shower the night before instead?
    2) Do you change into base layers once you're out of the truck, or do you wear those into the truck and just change into outer layers at the hunting site?

    • @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751
      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  5 років тому +7

      Thank you and great questions! I shower either. If I have clean clothes and leave very little scent trail, that's what matters to me. For me personally I feel I could smell like a pig, because I hunt with the belief that I can't eliminate my scent on stand...but I can eliminate it or reduce it greatly on the way in and out.
      #2 I where base layers...typically with some sweets and sweatshirt, and then change outside the truck into my mid and outer layers. If it is early season and warm that means changing down to my under wear.

    Great video. Love the science based approach over the sponsored route (saying some product will allow you to forget the wind for example).
    I think what most of these gimmicks don't tell you is what causes scent in the first place. We can smell the exact same scents as the deer do. We just can't pick it up until it's magnitudes greater than what deer can smell. So things like scented laundry detergent and gasoline smells are obvious but what causes B.O. (the factor you have less control over)? When your cells die (like they do all the time) they break down. You also sweat which contains proteins. The bacteria that live on your skin love to consume both. Byproducts of this breakdown are gasses such as methane. You might clean and spray your clothes and as the host said buy a bit of time until the stink builds up again and starts wafting all through the woods but you shouldn't expect to eliminate it. This is why getting to your stand quickly without getting overheated is important. Then you must hunt the wind as your scent starts creeping out of your clothes.
    I know the Ozone generators say that nothing can live in an environment with O3 but in order to get a significant enough concentration you would really need to be inside a closed blind or have it blowing directly over your body to keep the bacteria from feeding and multiplying. Having it blow ozone downwind of you does nothing as the bacteria are on your skin not it the air. All that is in the air is the byproducts of the cells breaking down which aren't affected by ozone. Blowing it on you is a problem though since no carbon based lifeform can live in ozone saturated environments. This includes the cells in your body.
    Don't want to sound negative just hate all the companies taking advantage of hunters by offering up half truths.

      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  5 років тому +1

      Thank you very much! And man that's a can of works eh? All so true. I do feel that you can cover your scent trail in and out of your stand to a very high degree but again once on stand you are going to lose that contest when it comes to fooling s mature bucks nose. Hunters really just need to focus on being good hunters. You just can't make up with poor stand locations or hunting strategy, with the next latest potion in machine, bottle, can, etc.

      @whitetailhabitatsolutions9751  5 років тому +1

      Thanks E! I firmly believe that nothing hides your scent on stand. Of course truly talking mature deer. Also on a small parcel you should not be hunting a stand a lot. For example most 40 acre parcels that I see and design have 9-12 stands on them...a few for each winds. On the land I hunt with 8 acres of cover there are still 7 stands. I hunt 25 acres, 40 and 52. Some stands I hunt 5-6 times per season...all 110 days+. A few none at all and most 2-3 times. Last year my buddy Rich and I sat in 2 stands only twice each and shot 4 bucks. For me one was during the rut and 1 was during the secondary rut early in Dec. Less equals more opportunity for sure...
      If you take the approach that you can NEVER eliminate your scent at your stand...you will experience the highest level of consistent success. If I thought anything would work, I sure would use it 😉

      @@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 yes being 100% scent free is impossible. I do everything I can because the layout of my property and it being only 40 acres in mountainous Terrain limits the number of stand sights I can have. I believe the ozonics units help. I use them in my rubber maid totes with my clothes, on stand and I even have one that plugs into the accessory port in my truck that I run in my truck to kill odors in my truck. Lol I see and shoot nice bucks and black bear every year. My brother in law hunts the property too and does nothing really for scent control and usually is done hunting by the middle of November, because he has had no luck. I was spending about an average of $50 a year on sprays and scent elimination products. 2 years ago I bought an industrial Ozone generator and use it in a steel closet that I hang all my clothes, boots, and gear in. It has worked excellent for me. The only downside is that the ozone will destroy anything elastic in your clothes. It keeps the smell of ozone for hours into the hunt. @jimh7015 5 років тому +3

      I’m interested to hear from Jeff on this, but I’ve read and heard from a few top dog trackers that it can actually be the opposite. When it’s really dry the dogs can have a hard time picking up the scent a day or two later compared to if it is a light rain, because the rain basically absorbs the scent and stays put. A hard intense downpour is different but that’s just what I’ve heard.

    • @jimmunk9311
      @jimmunk9311 5 років тому

      I believe that is why you will see dogs and deer lick their noses when trying to smell something. They're trying to add more moisture. Heavy rains however are another story.

    I have a question. We have 19,000 acres and we are not allowed to use ATV’s other then retrieving deer only between certain time frames.
    We have to walk or use bike.
    I purchased a RAMBO Electric bike for this upcoming season that begins tomorrow morning. Obviously the advantages of the bike is that I’m leaving minimal to almost no ground scent as I’m riding the bike to my stand so the closer I can get to the stand the less ground scent I leave.
    However, from me being on the bike it’s going to have my scent on the bike and parking the bike close to my stand now I have scent near the base of my tree, which I would have anyway even if I walked to my stand. What would you do in my situation?
    Get the bike as close to the stand as possible and lay it down, or stop the bike a distance from the stand in a direction I don’t expect the deer to approach from and walk the rest of the way to the stand. Thank you for any advise!!

      One important thing to remember is not to hunt over a spot that deer are likely to stay at for long periods. If you're 100 yards off your food plot you can exit undetected (assuming there are some leaveson the trees or elevation changes). If you set up right on the food plot and deer are nocturnal you really can't expect to not spook deer. If you have to I've seen people saying it's better to have someone drive in to spook the deer and pick you up. If they see vehicles all the time they won't associate it with danger. My guess on that is the truth is somewhere in the middle.

      Hi Nick! I really tsk the approach that if on stand, you will spook a mature deer no matter what if he gets down wind of you. So that just leaves my access and how much scent I leave on the ground or on weeds and brush going in or out of the stand. I would rather smell very little with clean clothes than something that would create a scent trail to or from my stands. Strings smells that linger for many, many hours (like smoke and animal urine) could easily allow deer to pattern you. I am a huge fan of no scent at all...

      My uncle shot a 145 inch pope and younger 7 yards away on the ground with his herters recurve. The deer walked within 3 yards of him but he was kneeling in some tall grass below him by about 4 feet difference in eye level. The deer walked on the berm and turned giving my uncle a perfect 7 yard away qaurtering shot. Put a port Oford cedar shaft tipped with a Zwickey Delta right through both lungs and that buck didn't make it further than 60 yards. He had about an entire can of Deep woods on. That was the 2nd week of Archery opener in MN so mid September back in 2009. He also hadn't taken a proper shower or bath in 2 weeks since he was at deer camp. Nobody came down for those 2 weeks and he pretty much had the entire state land to himself except for the Mung squirrel hunters running around raining bb's.. I've found that scent elimination only matters if you your clothes are saturated with an unnatural odor. Alcohol, Tobbaco, heavy Perfume and deodorant scents. If you're a tobacco user around your hunting cloths and have to chew or light, etc up in the stand then don't even bother with cover scent. Nothing will help you get rid of that smell. If you are at camp and people smoke or you have a fire going, don't bother with cover scent unless you apply it 4hrs before you head out and leave your clothes outside. If you're going to bother eating a heavy breakfast of eggs, ham, sausage, bacon, maple syrups before going out then don't bother with cover scents it's snake oil at that point. Cover scent only really works under specific circumstances. I don't even use it myself and I'm not into tobacco and abstain from eating until I'm done hunting, and have no problem seeing animals gathering in my area. It may help in very select cases, but it is in my view snake oil and placebo to a point. People get it in their head that they "need" this product or they wouldn't have seen that 10pt buck. What matters more is your ability to stay still and not move suddenly. If you can do those two things that is 90% of your battle. The other 20% are divided among being able to hit your targets and getting the dressed and out of the woods.

    Really great advice for scent control, my question for you is, how high do you recommend to place a deer stand? I have used a climber for many yrs. & I normally will hunt no less than 25 feet if at all possible. I have found that when you get that high it not only tremendously helps with your sent, but it certainly forgives your movement mistakes as well. I'm 68yrs. young been hunting deer for many yrs.with a bow, & one thing you, & I certainly agree on is that you can never be to clean, to quiet, or to observant of the wonderful animal we hunt, & harvest as GOD has given us the privilege to do. Great stuff, Jeff. Learned a few things, for sure. I have a question (and maybe a video idea) for you. You talk a lot about access to your stands. What if you have very limited access to your stands? I hunt in WV hills/mountains and we really only have two forest roads to access stands. We're actually walking on the neighbors property a fair bit just to get into our parcel. We do our best to control for scent and only hunt stands when the wind is right, but we're walking through SO MUCH of the parcel before we get to the stands and I'm afraid we're spooking deer. A direct/perpendicular route to the stand just isn't an option due mainly to the steep terrain. Would love to hear your thoughts on hunting a more hilly/mountainous parcel.

If you can...habitat improvements like bedding cuttings, food, travel corridorswsterholes and Mick scrapes can often be used to keep deer away from your access. Meaning that if you define the access somewhere else, you can pull them away from where you need to travel. Clean clothes, quiet access roads and any type of screening along side the road can help too.

I spray down with dead down wind wash my hunting clothes in dead Dow wind detergent. I’ve had deer 5-10 yards from me down wind and not spook. There’s no way to completely take away all our scent no possible way in my opinion. Yes I take diff trails in and out from my stands but they’re still goin to smell something. If you get a chance your more than welcome just let me know we’ll go. It’s fun now.
